                  @tharlow:

IMPORTANCE Airborne simulation experiments showed that cotton masks, surgical
masks, and N95 masks provide some protection from the transmission of infective
SARS-CoV-2 droplets/aerosols; however, medical masks (surgical masks and even N95
masks) could not completely block the transmission of virus droplets/aerosols even
                  when sealed.

It offers more protection than not wearing a mask, making an argument for 100% effective is a strawman.

                  • @OzzyBrak: Sorry, but that’s just wrong. If you can’t completely block the virus, you can’t stop it. Wearing a mask will not make any meaningful difference

                  • @OzzyBrak: Urm
No wearing a mask just stops you touching your nose and face thus reduces the chance of getting sick, but honestly people dont even wear masks properly.seen the disposable masks hanging inside car rear view mirrors? Yup people reuse them so they are good for nothing also people pull the mask down a lot just to touch the nose or to scratch the face but If you think it stops a virus from going in to your nose you are very silly hahahah

        • +4

its true, surgeons just wear masks to appear elite in those operating theatres

          /s

          • +1

@notauser: Bacterial infections are real enough. Bacterial cells are massive compared to viruses…

          • @notauser: Ok I’m really going to call you an idiot the the main reason a surgeon wears a mask is to protect themselves from splashes or sprays of blood or bodily fluids from the patient, and the second reason is to prevent microorganism from entering in to the surgical site from their faces or respiratory tracts gosh you don’t know much at all!!, It’s nothing do do with a damn virus it’s more to protect the patient that’s being operated on. Even after all that no site will be 100% sterile it’s impossible to achieve and staff in the site can have undiagnosed diseases.

At risk of arguing getting into an endless discussion, dust masks (P2 or otherwise) don't necessarily work like a sieve - in that the smallest particle size captured by the filter is dictated by the size of the gaps within the filter.

How these masks work is actually static attraction of the filter material to the particles that pass through it. The standard in Australia is based on 0.3 micron (300nm) sized particles - which have been shown as the most penetrating, and will remove at least 94% (for P2) of particles this size. It will remove particles smaller and larger than these at a much higher rate: smaller particles travel slower and are more susceptible to the static charge of the fibres, larger particles might travel faster but are simply stopped like they would be in a (multi-layered) sieve.

        Good explanation. But 1% of a billion is still 10 million… 0.001% of a billion is 10000.

Masks simply don’t and won’t work for viruses. The concept, at a microscopic, and dosage, level is almost hilarious…

P.S. Quality first comment! You get my upvote

        • -4

These sheep probably haven’t noticed that like 8 out of 10 don’t even wear the mask properly also many pull it down to touch/ scratch nose or face. Also isn’t it funny that people reuse disposable masks, I see masks hanging from carb rear view mirror all the time hahahah also virus is smaller than woven holes in mask fabric, god some people are stupid.

          • +3

@iCandy: Get your facts right. Masks work by reducing the viral load especially when you exhale/cough etc. Viruses spread because they are attached to water droplets when you exhale or sneeze which is what gets captured by the mask.

Well I'm certainly glad I don't live on the GC .

            • -8

@gadget: No they don’t. Just went out and of about 50 people I saw, only 3 wore masks. No one in the shop I went into wore a mask and neither did I. It’s best to get Omicron and have a very mild illness and attain natural antibodies to Covid, panty-wetter.

              • +4

@iCandy: You are entitled to your opinion.

In all probability I will catch Covid at some stage despite all the precautions taken. But at least I'm doing my part by masking up to help keep the unvaccinated safer. While I have no sympathy for the anti vax/denier crowd, I'm doing it for the other people who are immunocompromised or can't get vaccinated for medical reasons.

And if you think the unvaxxed will get a mild case some may and more probably won't, hopefully these people never have to find out.

                  • +1

@sammyla: Wow resorting to name calling now eh. Do you get your facts from tik tok?

              • -3

@iCandy: This gadget fool reading a script out of media and calls us anti vaxxer COVID denier hahah well I only have empathy for these fools who are so brainwashed that they don’t even question the narrative

                • +1

@sammyla: Evidently there is no point discussing this with you since you are such the critical thinker.

PS it's sympathy and not empathy.

                  • -1

@gadget: Oh yes that’s correct sympathy it is,I did type the wrong word.people who claim to be critical thinkers are actually not critical thinkers I mean no matter how much thinking you do if you lack common sense you still make the wrong choice hahahaha

              • +5

                @iCandy:

Just went out and of about 50 people I saw, only 3 wore masks. No one in the shop I went into wore a mask and neither did I.

What does this have anything to do with masks not working? Have you looked at peer reviewed papers on the effectiveness of masks before you came to that conclusion?

                Never question the narrative

If you want a discussion, there's plenty of people on here who are happy to have a discussion with you. We can take a look at your 'facts' and you can have a look at ours to hopefully come to a conclusion. I'm very open to what you have to say and willing to change my mind if the evidence is strong enough. The thing with people like you is that this is such a common response to just call people sheep, run away and not present a single shred of evidence while calling other people sheep…yet what makes you not a sheep is the question because to either side, we're both sheep. You're as much of a sheep to us as we are to you. The only way to actually distinguish sheep is to have a discussion which you clearly are afraid to do. Instead, you throw around insults and baseless rhetoric, classic signs of someone with cognitive dissonance, no evidence to back it up, and a refusal to accept or acknowledge viewpoints that differ from your own. That actually sounds like a sheep to me. My prediction is, you're going to respond (if at all) with some one liner sarcastic comment, maybe with an insult and pat yourself on the back…just like all sheep do.

This guy Tharlow is a moron, should be banned for spreading medical misinformation.

      • I agree!

        • +4

          then delete your shit

          • -2

@hugh: Some would call it critical thought. I encourage you not to blindly absorb government propaganda. The health system, even in rich nations, is extremely bloated and inefficient. It’s also, ironically, underfunded (the beds were already full in the “quiet time” before a mild, flu-like pandemic entered the stage). Address the real issue — a health system that simply has absolutely no contingency whatsoever built into it. And don’t give me this “unprecedented” shit… the Spanish flu was far, far, far worse

            • +9

@tharlow: Premise everything you say by "In my opinion…".
Otherwise, if you don't know what you are saying is factual and proven, it's better not to say anything at all.

Be good, best of luck for the new year.

            • +3

@tharlow: put up (your research in peer review journals) or STFU you dolt.

Nobody is interested in your whinging about sheep. We'll trust the people who actually put the work in testing, reviewing and collating evidence in a careful and considered way.

The moral case and evidence for masks is obviously absolutely overwhelming to 95%+ of the population, so if you want to opt out, then fk off to a libertarian cruise ship and out of the Australian health system

          • @hugh: Haha we are not in communist China

        • +1

          Hahaaaa

          • @Chocobros: When is your 4th booster? hahahah

            • +7

@sammyla: Tks for reminding me to get the 3rd booster that will get me to 70% + effectiveness vs the current strain .
Without it its only 36% Pfizer and Astra 0 after a 3-4 mths .
I need to help the hospital have more beds for Sheep that don't believe in science but Social Media Crap .

              • -4

@popsiee: Astra was good for killing people from blood clots, but not much else, sadly

                • +5

@tharlow: I know its difficult to believe that Astra against the previous strain would have saved 10 mil people ( I'm doubling official rate to be more accurate ) if they had a chance to get it . Versus no more than 2 figure deaths from blood clots.
                  Yeah that a bad risk/reward rate .

              • @popsiee: Oh popsiee I only agree with you on lego pricing mate lol calm down. I am not going to argue with you on vaccines. Let’s leave it at that.

                • +2

@sammyla: That's because you can't. The "information" from bloggers and social media travels straight from the screen to your mouth or keyboard without so much as a hint of logical thought. You simply regurgitate all the ridiculous conspiracy bs ad nauseam. There is no discussion or argument to be had with people like you. It's religious fanaticism. Do us all a favour and take a good look at yourself.

Don't know why I said that last bit. I'm 100% certain it won't happen.

                  • -3

@Karfaffel: Common sense is a blessing. You are one obedient citizen very easy to control you!! Model citizen really. Never question the narrative, just trust the big corporations and government you’ll be just fine.amazing how you still don’t get it!

            • +1

              @sammyla: Naughty troll

  • Got a message of no stock and "no stores in area have stock".. despite having stock showing at nearly every store near me lol

  • +1

Click and collect is horrendously slow at Bunnings. It’s like they almost couldn’t give a shit about its digital customers.

    • They want real customers not digital ones

  • got some, thanks op

    • -3

Plandemic is over just store them for the next one

      • who

        • -2

Yup WHO played a major part lol I mean look at the guy who’s leading that organisation, great isn’t it?

      • It is here already … twenty - twenty - too … as in 2020 too … as in 2020 again !!

And COVID-23 will be the zombie holocaust, so who cares!

        • Read the comment above lol he said WHO hahah also next one is spars 2025-2028

          • @sammyla:

            next one is spars 2025-2028

            Nope.
Only the wandering zombies will get that one.
            2023 is the date !!

Enjoy and $pend as if there is no tomorrow … after 2023, that is :-)

  • +2

Thanks OP, picked up 10 boxes from Crossroads store, 10 mins before closing down hehehe. Will use it only on public transportation and save the surgical masks for lesser risk situations.

    • -4

Lol less risk situations you sound like a hypochondriac

  • +2

Got fit tested with one of this and at best it is better then surgical mask, but no way close to p2 or n95 for me.

Ear loop make it comfortable to waer but you don't get a good seal around your face.

  • They’re so scratchy. And hotter than others, if that’s even possible!

  • I went to Bunnings Rydalmere in Sydney on 29/12 hoping to buy some of these masks. It said they were in stock on their website. But when I got there, there was none to be found. I asked one of the staff at the customer service counter. He searched the product id and there were supposed to be hundreds of them but another staff member said the masks were put away and not for sale for now. He said they are put aside as reserve for staff to use…

    • For staff to use or for staff to resell on ebay?

  • Is actually not that cheap

    • Username checks out

  • +1

these are not for medical use, i assume people are wanting to buy these for covid 19 , it specifically says mot medical use on wrapping , i bought a pack from bunnings and they are terrible.

interestingly people in bunnings told by management to use them , clearly not for covid 19 use .

    • +1

That's because they do not meet the Australian standards for medical use.

      P2 is the Australian standard

  • -8

Fun fact holes in the mask is 2000 micrometer wide while the virus is 1 micrometer lol so it will not stop you from getting the virus also it doesn’t fit snug on your face you have many open gaps the virus can get in.

    • +8

Wake until you discover that a HEPA filter can catch particles that are much smaller than the holes in the filter.

    • +3

2000 micron (or micrometre if you prefer) = 2mm. 2mm holes are what you typically see on perforated aluminium security screens.

    • +1

      Great story!

    • +7

Give it a rest will ya?
Nobody here is interested in joining your cult.

      • -1

Hahahah really don’t want you if there was a cult

    • Worked on your sheppard?

  • +2

The inventor of N95 did this commentary on reusing masks back in 2020.

    https://t.co/714DeW7cMl

tl;dr version you can have 4 on a rotation for daily use (assuming you're not sweating all over them etc). Can also steam them or put in 70°C oven to disinfect faster.

Worth just getting 4 good ones with full standard certification imho

  • a few weeks ago my local bunnings had 5packs for 50cents

  • I have these (splurged 6 months ago on a whopping five packs for $10). Not individually wrapped, in 5-packs. Also have the AMD for high-risk places or where I know I’ll sweat after 30 mins (AMD not affected by moisture and rated to 8-12 hrs?). Both v good, but I find these fit my face better than AMDs. For 40c each, so much better than those blue ‘hankies’,

  • Too late.

Government (Marketing dept) is telling us it is all over now … or almost.

    • Not really. Yo-yos are all the rage once again in Queensland…

  • Just been refunded. Looks like orders being cancelled..

    • Yep. Just got a message that I'll be refunded.
3rd time of this sort of order cancellation for me after cygnet car charger and a drill.

    • why?

  • +1

OOS @ Alexandria despite what website says.

  • Received my delivery today. Thanks OP.

  • Not in stock at local stores near me and delivery is 10$

  • Tks mate, just bought 20 packs :)

  • +1

Picked up 5 packs, great fitting, much better than a surgical mask IMO.

  • +2

I was in thailand recently and everywhere you see guys banging bargirls raw but wearing a face mask. Its so crazy!

    • +3

      you sure they were girls?

    • You should have said hi.

  • FYI There's plenty of the 10 for $4 packs at Bunnings Balgowlah in Sydney if anyone wants to take a drive to the Northern Beaches. They are near the registers.

I'm guessing there's also the 5 for $2 somewhere also.

    • FYI the 5 for $2 ones seem thicker and better quality than the 10 for $4 ones. But they might be a tad smaller.

      • +1

Definitely smallish, but great fitting, no gaps for me, unlike surgical masks….so happy.

  • I went to do a C&C yesterday from Rockdale Bunnings and literally there every basket for C&C (based on surname presumably) was full of these 5 packs.

I also noticed they were giving out the singles from the 10 pack of same brand at the entrance to customers who didn't have a mask.

  • Probably need it for the Ant Killer Dust. image

  • Campbelltown, NSW store has 50 boxes of 100 masks at $40 front of the store. You can buy them at $2 for 5 or a whole box of 100 for $40. Didn’t check how many they had on the shelves but plenty front of store. Try your luck if you are local.

  • Out of stock for C&C or delivery now in metropolitan Sydney. I did see some stores further out (eg Campbelltown, Wollongong, etc) which do have stock available for C&C.

You can still add to cart for delivery, but upon check out, it'll prompt you to switch to in store C&C since unavailable for delivery (14/1/22 2:30pm).
