Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2022

New forum post for the new year. Please use this post to submit feedbacks and request features. Again, no guarantee that requests will be responded or implemented, and often feature requests can take months to be pushed out, when there are other issues blocking them.

      • Thanks, Scotty is looking at adding visual indicators (probably not a sound) for both new posts and also when your connection is lost.

        • nice, one thing I like about ozb is the continuous QOL improvements :)
the UI and readability are leagues ahead of other sites

Please bring in the ability to collapse all comments to only show top-level replies to a post.

  • Any plan to update the app? Adding pm function and forum

    • App will remain minimalistic. Use the OzBargain website for the full functionality — it has been working fine on mobile for the last 10 years.

      • +1

Not sure if it's just the phone but for OzB app notifications on the Galaxy S7 it takes a considerable amount of time to open (~1 min). It will then display previously viewed content before actually displaying the content that was notified.

        • Mine never takes me to the notified content, takes me to some other page I visited. Samsung note 10

Ozbargain home/front page has a lot of settings you can customise, fantastic features.
Suggestion: A setting where you can adjust a slider for down votes for deals shown on the front page. I'd happily set it to like -5 as a cap, to remove questionable deals with more than 5 downvotes from even showing up. Would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Not sure if it’s intended or just me but when viewing the full desktop site on mobile, I don’t see the side bar on the right hand side anymore (where it shows recent deals, forum topics, competitions).
Tried safari and chrome and both are the same, started happening this morning.

    • Because desktop site no longer works on browser with not enough horizontal space. When the width of the browser is less than 1024px,

      • logo / header got shrunk
      • sidebar moves to the bottom

This change is targeting narrow desktop usage, i.e. iPad or 2-in-1 in portrait mode. If you are on mobile, use mobile site.

      • I use mobile site, but it keeps reverting back to desktop site on my iPad mini 6.

  • Can we have a way of reporting users for inbox spam? Just received a private message from user kasakaybarahayna with a message beginning:

Hey Mate, I noticed in past you have commented on Db2 Database (IBM) so I thought you might be interested in this offer.

But the only action I can take is to block this user. If at all possible I'd like to report this account as either being spam or compromised so as to make sure action is taken to prevent them harassing the OzB community.

    • I'll take a look on blocking + reporting PMs.

      • +4

Reporting PMs would be good, especially if they're abusive/spammy. I've copped a few abusive ones in the past (yes I've blocked them, but they should be reported anyway)

  • +1

A visual representation of comment thread with its replies etc. One thing I frequently find is the original comment is on page 1, but the children are all on page 2. I could just use View All, but I think it might be nice to have something similar like subtle vertical lines linking the different levels of threaded comments.

  • +1

As suggested by @coxymla here, would this be possible. Showing competition wins on store pages

(It would be nice if https://www.ozbargain.com.au/competition/pccasegear.com would also show winners)

  • Please add live page option to app to make it 35 X more exciting .

  • +1

When a comment thread is unpublished, collapse all of the unpublished replies (like an off-topic comment thread).

This would be more usefull for larger threads. I just came acrosss one that took up the whole screen on a mobile device.

Is trolling levels a new thing.
    Never noticed it. :O

    • Not new. There are 2 "levels", basically a normal/low and a high level. Each level provides a different amount of points towards the user which the system calculates how long a ban is (if any).

In the majority of cases, only the user banned would see levels however in this case, the account was banned (a ghost account trolling) and in that process all comments ever made (9 comments) removed by the system at the same time.

  • Seems to be a flood of Windows/Office spam today. Scum.

  • +1

Can anything be done about the Microsoft Office spam?

There has been like 20 posts in 2 days.

    • There's a known spammer that has been registering new domains and creating new accounts (via random VPN address). We have analysed their patterns and implemented some firewall rules, however there's no guarantee that the said spammers won't find other ways in.

The latest "0ffice 365 Pro" post that you've commented on, however, was posted by a different person (using a mobile CGNAT address from Telstra).

    • +1

      Keep reporting dude

  • I just noticed today for new threads made since last viewed, A new "[1]" on the chrome tab appears? can this be disabled? Great idea regardless! just not for me.

Also is there a way to speed up the search alerts, at times I am seeing a 45min ish window from thread posted to email notification.

    • That was requested here. Only happens when on the Live page that's in the background, i.e. not focused.

      • thanks scotty :)

  • [Bug] When a forum post is merged with another, the reply notification is wiped.

OP replied to me but the notification does not appear.

    • Noted. I'll have a look.

  • Just wanted to ask if there is an 'Executive Summary' Feature on OzB ?
What I mean, is there a feature that I can click on a post or forum that would do the following
    1. Display the main Post/Forum
    2. Get the Mean/Average of the all votes on the post/forum
(or Determine what the top 20% of the comments are)
    3. Hide all responses that are below the Mean/Average
(or hide all comments that are not into the top 20%)

If this feature is not there would it be possible to add this ?

    • I think the easier way to design is "sort by top" like reddit

Cheddar appears to be new cashback contender. Can this be added in line with CR and SB?
    Chedder App rebates

    • Happy to take a look if Cheddar wants to contact us to arrange API access to their cashback rates.

    • @getcheddarapp Might be of interest.

Should there be a way for mods to edit and wipe the original? I noticed there was a post with personal info removed but it is still available in revisions.

    • Mods can't currently remove revisions. Please report the problematic ones and we will purge them from the database.

Hide Expired Deals tickbox doesn't work for me. It still shows expired deals.

Is this bug exclusive to my account?

    • Not just you. The hide expired tag won't work on non brand/product tags currently (as they are also used for forum posts etc.), but scotty will see what can be done.

      Thanks for bringing it up.

    • This has been fixed,

      Thanks.

  • How difficult would it be that the search bar up top showed the tag as the first suggestion?

Let's say you just punch in "air purifier", it comes up with this by default:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/air%20purifier

Yet if it had the tag as an option, you could click on it and get this:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/air-purifier

Far more relevant having the deal posts there

    • +1

I find myself not using the search bar for this exact reason and instead google searching what I'm after followed by ozbargain to get a straight link to the store or the tag. I know for stores it's just as many clicks but it's just become a habit now.

    • This is now possible. Product categories will now appear as suggestions as you type in the search bar.

      • Awesome :) Good work team

Just after seeing the amount of spam coming through, would it be possible to block all of the free freenom TLDs (.tk,.ga,.ml,.gq,.cf etc.)?

  • +3

    Hi
Can i request for the option:titleonly tag (and other search tags?) as a checkbox on the search page? Perhaps in a dropdown menu?
I just find myself using that often, not sure if other members feel the same?

    • It's a good idea. If you want case studies that's what Gmail does on mobile app now as it's easier for new user discovery and also to remind you of the hard to remember options.

    • +1

      Here's a list of the search operators - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:search

I don't see it linked anywhere on the search page unlike with the formatting help as an expandable box.

      • Thank you, I agree it'd be useful to have that page linked as a guide

        Cheers

        • Was this resolved? Or answered? I haven't seen answers anywhere.

The ads are getting ridiculous. The ones that are splattered between content are so large, but this really is just absurd. Please dial it back

    https://imgur.com/a/zaPgEoV

Edit: just found that you can disable ads on account settings. That is rad. It's a shame, I don't mind ads if it supports the platform, but the massive ones are just too offensive

    • +2

I want to support the website. I do not want to support it through advertisements, especially not ones like this. I use an ad blocker on all devices.

I'd be more than happy if OzB offered the option to donate each year to have the disable ads feature.

      • Signal has that option. Perhaps study how that works. Why not ozbargain?

  • Hey Scotty, I think it would be a good idea to impose a word minimum to be able to post a comment. I hope this would encourage quality posts including mine. I also hope that when a user scrolls down a deal to find any useful information, they are met with less comments that's considered irrelevant, troll etc

    • I think having a word minimum requirement would not be enough to encourage informative comments. First of all, comments are often just opinions / responses from community members and they aren't necessarily need to be of "quality". Secondly, people can also pad out the comments to meet the requirement. 10 word minimum to make a main post (to start a thread), but I've seen people copy & paste sentences just to meet the requirement.

  • Hi,
I think it is a good idea to put a icon on a deal/store page when there is a discounted giftcard available (as per the wiki page). The discounted gift card wiki page is a lesser known feature of OzBargain and it would be useful to combine the two resources together to help users save more money.

    • Ozbaragin may even consider running a giftcard portal like CR and SB, and can add an additional revenue source

  • Merged from Feature suggestion: Show Average User's Vote, what do you think?

I would like to suggest to the site owner to show a user's average vote.

The average number should be shown near their username, so that reader can easily ignore the thread from someone with low average.

This is to encourage people to write better comments, ie: show more respect, no trolling etc.

I find it difficult to read the comments in this site otherwise. While some username can stick in my memory because of their frequent trolling, but I can only remember three…

And vice versa, knowing a person is usually helpful, will make me more interested to read his comments.

Other forums has a rank in a username, like long-standing, senior, or whatever. This is similar, but i think simpler.

    • -8

mine would be like negative 200 from all the negs i get

people here dont like 'facts' the average punter on this forum is pretty dumb and ignorant to facts….the worst part bout stupid people is they dont like being told they are stupid and to ignorant to accept that they are….

            @Trying2SaveABuck:

they are stupid and to ignorant to accept that they are

I completely agree. I think you suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect.

By the way, it's too …… Slam dunked yourself there, mate.

            • @ThithLord:

I completely agree. I think you suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Every person 'suffers' from personal bias based on your own experiences and education level - the difference between being 'educated' and 'intelligent' is you can look at the 'data/facts' and admit your point of view need to be adjusted.

High order intelligence is when you 'start questioning' the data itself accepting you point of view might need to change but if the data is 'bias' itself then you must understand that.

ie Sky News is clearly bias towards a Right wing point of view, The Project on Channel ten is extreme Left. Thus when discussing any issues you need to be aware the source you are getting data/facts is not fully reliable.

Most people struggle to understand 'data/facts' let alone understand how to question it

              • +1

                @Trying2SaveABuck:

The mere fact that your frame of reference for politics is LEFT WING/RIGHT WING means you need to remove yourself from any discussions revolving around politics.

Identity politics are categorically useless points of reference.

                • @ThithLord:

The mere fact that your frame of reference for politics is LEFT WING/RIGHT WING means you need to remove yourself from any discussions revolving around politics.

Am i correct would you not argue Sky news has a right wing bias? and the Project has a left wing bias?

or do you think they are 100% factual unbiased reporters of information -

because if you think the latter then ill go back to my the 'average' person here is not to 'bright' comment

                  • @Trying2SaveABuck: They are both woefully terrible, uninformative TV shows - both serving the exact same purpose: to keep the Australian public uninformed.

because if you think the latter then ill go back to my the 'average' person here is not to 'bright' comment

                    It's too. Not too bright.

                      Bahaha touché

They are both woefully terrible, uninformative TV shows - both serving the exact same purpose: to keep the Australian public uninformed.

yet they are media sources millions of people consume everyday and take as gospel…. there literally is a poll on this forum right now of an OP who thought Scomo made interest rates low…..

    • +9

This is to encourage people to write better comments, ie: show more respect, no trolling etc.

Not sure if this will work.

I find that my troll comments get more votes than when I try and be serious.

      • +4

        Can confirm.

Being genuinely serious may also earn negs or little to no votes.

Being playful, jokes, trolling maybe also earn the most + or -. jv is a great example.

In regards to OP’s feature, I think it’ll be gimmicky (useless), than give a true indication. Just go check the OzB monthly stats.

        • +4

Being genuinely serious may also earn negs or little to no votes.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I have been downvoted to oblivion because I dared cut and paste the relevant road rule or pasted a link to facts that upset what the hive mind wanted to read.

People don’t like being told they are wrong and I’ve seen the group mentality here pile it on a user who is 100% correct, but the community doesn’t like that answer, so they just pile on the negs.

          • +5

@pegaxs: The pattern I’ve observed is, comments with higher + or - votes, often correlate with the social acceptability of the comments and the emotional trigger it invokes. That seems to be the culture here, it’s not good or bad thing imho. It just how it is, other forums would have their own social voting mechanism.

            My TLDR to OP’s hypotheses:
There are no correlation between +votes and quality (the type OP is seeking) of comments.

    • +3

Maybe on the users profile when you click on their name.

Posts: 37 (avg vote count 19)
Comments: 3,946 (avg vote count: 1.07)

Anyway, you can basically see the best and the worst of the last month when you have a look at the sites user stats page for the month.

And I tell you, it would make no difference anyway, because they are just fake internet points. Trolls don’t care. But what I would like to see is the same thing for deals implemented for forum posts, where users could upvote valuable forum posts and downvote the trolls. And if a troll gets enough negative posts, they are restricted from making new posts just like store reps are held too.

      • A + to neutralise.

      • +2

        fake internet points

But fake internet points is all I’ve got :(

        • +1

Fake it until you make it

          • @Nugs: Might become insane.

      • True but only the highest and lowest rated get a mention

    • This is to encourage people to write better comments, ie: show more respect, no trolling etc.

      no

  • +2

Is there any possibility of having the 5 negative votes stay for deals, but give unlimited (or a much higher amount) for forums posts?

There’s legit so many sh*t posts in the forums nowadays from a few certain users, and seems a bit ridiculous that there’s no limit on upvoting but only has the 5 neg vote limit which then means that can’t be used for the reasons it’s meant to be in deal posts.

Not sure if this is even technically possible considering the deals and forum are (I’d assume) one and the same, but just figured I’d ask.

    • I think it works - it means people save their negs for comments which REALLY deserve it, instead of handing them out to any comment they mildly disagree with.

      • Then shouldn’t the same restriction apply to positive votes in the forum as well based on that thinking?

  • +1

When you bookmark an individual comment, you just get a list of comments with no context.

Any chance this be improved so if you click on something eg the date timestamps it will go directly to that comment in the original post? Or at least open up the link so you can choose like we currently do for actual comments?

At the moment this missing, you can only open up the original post/deal and search for the comment, which might take a long time if there's a lot.

    Thanks

    Eg this link https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12258827/redir

    • Your browser is broken - the end of the URL (that is redirected to) has an anchor fragment where the browser should jump to the referenced comment. See in bold below:

      • +1

Not sure what you're referring to? The link I provided as an example is correct and works fine, it just doesn't exist for bookmarked comments.

If you bookmark any comment, then go to your list of bookmarks, there's no easy way/direct link to get back to the original comment (as far as I can see).

        Are you saying there is?

        • +2

Sorry my apologies I read too quickly and missed the bookmark word.

  • Hooray, after all that never-ending Windows/Office spam, now it looks like we're going to see a flood of IPTV spam. More scum.

    • Yeah that has caused quite a few headache for us over the past months, as those spammers are quite relentless. We have deployed a few changes to combat those spammers and more are on the way.

      • Good to hear, Scotty.

  • The notifications not going away on clicking is worse than they were when I mentioned it last time - I think every single notification now does not go away after you click on it, you have to always click Mark as Read to get rid of them. Any chance this can be fixed?

    • On what devices? The problem is on the front end where the page unloads before "read" has been registered in the backend. Not happening on Chrome/Chromium based browsers but looks like it's happening everywhere else. It will be fixed, but not likely this nor next month.

      • Iphone on safari - thank you! Obviously there's much more priority things than this but just thought I would mention it in case it had been forgotten

  • +2

A copy deal feature would be nice. Some Amazon items go on sale for same price, even if not a small edit after copying an expired deal would speed up the post.

  • Looks like desktop view is forcing into mobile view? I don't believe I changed anything.

Any way of checking how to change between desktop / mobile view (I tried via Developer Tools which puts it properly in mobile view)?

    @scotty

    • There should be a "Full Site" link at the bottom of the page if you are on mobile view. Or just click this.

      • Perfect! That did it. No idea how I triggered it to go into Mobile view.

        Thanks! back to treasure hunting

Edit: Ahh, I see the Mobile Site / Full Site link now.

  • Is it just me, or are e-mail notifications when a new comment is made a few hours behind? It's 4:26 and I'm only getting notifications that were made at 2:11 …

    • +1

Yeah my notification bell is delayed currently too

    • We have a single "slow" queue handing certain tasks that aren't that time sensitive. However it appears that being 2+ hours delay might be too much. It was caused by a post containing hundreds of links, which severely delayed our linking validator, as each of those links took forever to open (probably some anti-bot firewall). It all adds up and caused the notifications to bank up.

BeatThatFlight's links were also the cause of the site issue almost 2 weeks ago. We'll try to figure something out to prevent it from happening again.
