Not very important, but the issue of new notifications not becoming "read" after clicking on them (and having to click Mark As Read to get rid of the notification) is still happening, and more often than before. On mobile.

    • +1

Which OS / browser? The notification gets marked as read before navigating to another page, and sometimes that doesn't get triggered. Behaviour on Safari rarely tested so there might be issues. My aim is to move away from existing notification model to support something that's more cross-platform. So fixes might come after that.

      • +2

Sorry, yes Safari. Ok sounds good!

    • +3

I always have that problem. I get excited that I have a notification and then get sad.

      • +2

I wonder who is downvoting you - saw another of your perfectly reasonable comments with a random downvote

        • -1

I downvoted it. It's sad that peoples sense of happiness comes from that, it's a comment on the internet. Maybe I downvoted the other one as well, though it's unlikely, as I try not to just downvote and not comment too often. Though, again, a downvote on an internet forum shouldn't be cause for alarm.

    • +1

      Same. iOS safari too. iPad/iPhone.

    • +1

      Same. Firefox. Android 11

  • +1

I dont know if it for everyone, but the back to the top, previous/next bar at the bottom of the screen on my iPad Air is blocked by the bottom of the screen (similarly blocked on mobile version on my Android phone) Can it be moved vertically along the right hand edge of the screen rather than at the bottom? or at least an option to move it there??

    • +1

      Same on iPad mini 6

    • +1

Screenshot? Certainly haven't heard from anyone else.

My preference is actually not provide more configuration option, as we'll now need to support multiple placement for all our future code changes.

      • +2

        Screenshot?

On it already… I dont really want more options, just thought it might work better here like this.

        The iPad issue looks like this;

The nav bar is hidden at the bottom under the swipe up bar.

If you try and open the "navigate to" menu to get to the options like "OP/Newest/Your comment" it is blocked out of the screen.

        • Thanks. Looks like it's iOS specific issue with browser overlaying it's own control over the content of the website. I'll have a look.

          • @scotty: FWIW, I am using Brave browser on Android and get the same issue

At the moment, chrome browser and the mobile site seems to be working on Android.

            • +1

@pegaxs: I've got Brave installed on Android and it's not always reproducible, however I've seen that issue before on mobile — when you click on the 3-dots button to bring up the menu, it pops up from below the page which blocks the buttons. It's a separate issue but I'm still investigating.

  • +2

Create a heat map for the site so we can instantly see where the hot-spots are and clicks are going
ie, a deal / comment gets lots of upvotes then it goes on the widget and we can see the trending deals/comments and can come take a geeze

Make ozbargain-specific NFT's which we can display on purchase. Let's do the usual 10 000 variations thing and to be in the running for one we have to be an active member and they are drawn by ballot or simiolar

  • +3

Can we have a strike/ban system for spamazon (mainly chinese based reps) who consistently either post strongly downvoted non-deals, or price jack then list it as a sale, or low quality/misleading descriptions?

    • +2

The performance based auto-ban has been in place for all the stores, for many years. However stores aren't blocked until at least two deals (with no/low number of votes) have been posted.

  • +14

Can we limited Slavoz to one forum post per year

    • +2

Create a Mega Forum so all the posts are conveniently in the one spot.

      • +5

Or how about we just merge any subsequent threads as "duplicates"?

        • This, has happened with other "prolific posters of the same thing repeatedly".

    • Example

  • When replying to a post, most of the time it doesn't show @

Randomly replied to a comment above, it doesn't show who I replied to.

    • +4

There's no need to show @ with threaded comments, because your comment is already nested under the person you are replying to. We only show @ on comments that have reached maximum nesting, to help distinguish whom you are replying to.

  • +5

Make OzBargain Weekly Random Discussion Great Again! (by deleting it). Seriously, it's redundant as anyone can post anything now in one of the Forums.

    • It'r archaic clutter. Time to bid farewell.

    • +2

      Agree and only pegaxs replies

      • +2

Just make all the questions about Fiats

    • +4

      Smokes
      Cigars
      Vapes

Cigarette/Tobacco and related items are banned by law under the Australia-wide Tobacco Advertising Prohibition Act 1992

    • +4

Besides those stated that are illegal to advertise, scotty doesn't want the website to contain those kind of products for various reasons and I'd have to agree.

What you could do is create your own website dedicated to those products yourself :)

  • Thanks for running this site.

Onecquery, I can't change an up or down vote, now, if I make a mistake. Is there a way around this?

    • You can click the votes button and click the opposite symbol next to the one with your name to cancel it. If this isn't available you can report the post and ask a mod to revoke your vote, but it means you can't vote again on that comment.

  • See who upvotes/downvotes you?

    • +3

You can already see who upvotes you. Downvotes you can't see and I doubt they'll ever let you see.

  • +1

My commend is just thanks for maintaining an awesome website that has become a place I come to for deals, forums, discussions, and so on.

My favourite website, to be honest.
Aside from the ones I clear from my browser history of course.

  • Can you tag people? Like @supasaiyan in a thread, and it would send me a notification?

    • @supasaiyan yes. There's a dropdown menu when you go @ and start typing a name. Then there's a checkbox checked by default below that will notify the user.

      • Do you have to enable something? When I type @, nothing happens

        @Clear

        • +3

Tagging users is still in beta, you'll need to enable beta features here.

          • +1

            @hamza23: Ahh.. no wonder!

          • +1

@hamza23: on your link I get " 403 Access Denied
You do not have permission to access this page."

            • +2

@Sunshines bright: The link is specifically for supasaiyan. You shall go into your own My Account → Settings page and there should be an option to turn on the beta feature.

  • @hamza23 though if I get the spelling right I can type in your name but no options at all only reply give the @ context properly

    • @Sunshines bright

      I received your tag

Sunshines bright tagged you in this comment "@hamza23 though if I get"

That link was a direct link for that user, for everyone else go to my account > settings > edit > account > click 'Show beta features'.

      • giggles I had done that previously and I did get a little pop up for your @hamza23 but just expected to see your name in red underlined when I posted to you? curiouser

  • Please add an option to cancel a Report submission for a deal. As there seems to be no way to do this once you report a deal and realise you want to cancel the report.

    • Mods will no longer mark the report as "resolved" if it's no longer valid. There's no need for users to actually "Cancel" a report.

      • I was actually talking about If I submit a report for a deal, change my mind and want to cancel it before it gets approved by a mod. As the report may still get approved and modified.

        • Presumably mods are sensible and will only change things if it makes sense to. So if your report doesn't make sense I wouldn't worry.

  • I use Ozbargain on my mobile which has an AMOLED screen, on dark theme, and have noticed that the background colour is not OLED black. It's a slightly lighter shade which is noticeable. I would like to suggest if the background colour could be changed to OLED black thanks.

  • Comments should have a sort feature similar to practically ALL other websites. Sort feature to include top likes, newest and oldest. This can help us from just needing to see what is relevant to us if we are busy, on the go etc. We just need the most important info, so that'll be the most liked comments. I can't be scrolling so many times on my mobile to get to the last or next page esp if it's a popular deal. Times are changing, and everyone has moved. It needs to be a little more intuitive Scotty.

    Ban political bargains.

If you do it for guns why not do it for political ones as well?

      • +2

Neil, you fall for the same, BS trap here.

Its not the politics its the promotion of a particular way to vote.

This sticker is calling on the Binning of the Prime Minister.

The only way that is to be achieved is by voting for another politician or party.

        Its party political.

The free kindle book by The Chaser might push close to the boundaries but was allowed, it was an ebook, not a party political poster (these like all the other examples never had the "authorised by" election material requirement on them.

This requirement could easily be used as the reason that it shouldnt be posted as a bargain. (Note I am not arguing that it cant be in the discussion forums.)

The others are historical biographies, all valid even though one might not like the story or the person. Yes in some cases within that biography it could be calling for a political solution, but its a book with lots of other interesting information.

Just like free Bibles, which discuss the crazy notion that Earth was created in 7 days. Not factually correct based on what we know today. But then things have been lost in translation over time.

Alienating a group of members for some stupid political stunt isnt really what Ozbargain is about.

The OP declares themselves a Green (just read all their posts in this thread) and uses the thread to attack others views. Many others also declare anyone who objects to the post as being anti the message given out by the sticker, when there are a number who like me are anti the introduction of politics into a bargain site.

And I didnt vote for or against the deal, and the misinterpretation is evident, that if you voted down the deal, you are frankly either a LNP supporter or worst still a Facist. Look at the hate being generated.

Also the pseudo impostion of deleting negative votes because people didnt like the post but didnt exactly match the negative voting guidelines is a bit suss as well. A while ago I was told on a post negative votes like that would stand as there were so many. "guidelines just that", overiding community opinion being seen as more relevant in the circumstances.

We are going to have an very nasty few months before and after the election, so maybe Ozbargain could sit it out.

Not too late to stop this. Making a declaration that free political giveaways arent to be in the bargain section. Posted in the general discussion area abosultely fine and part of "free speech". There is no bargain, its a giveaway that has never been charged for. Requesting a donation is a request NOT a price.

A donation is a gift - usually one of a charitable nature. A donation is a voluntary transfer of property (often money) from the transferor (donor) to the transferee (donee) with no exchange of value (consideration) on the part of the recipient (donee).

This would be one of the larger negatively voted deals on Ozbargain - you have the stats (include the 45 plus cancelled votes). Doesnt that say something.

I can post a poll. Something like this. (But this might just inflame the site more so I'll think it over)

Do you think ozbargain should allow the posting of free political material as a Bargain?

        1. If it aligns with my political beliefs
        2. If it is Anti Government
        3. If it is Pro Government
        4. No not ever.
        • +2

          Its party political.

          Is it?

THIS IS NOT ABOUT PARTY POLITICS. THIS IS ABOUT POLICY.
We support a number of Liberal politicians, such as Matt Kean in NSW, who support policies that are favourable to renewables. We’ve fought policies from Labor, Liberals and Nationals over the years.

We have a history of fighting policies that harm our industry and we won’t stop now.

This is about doing what’s best for the renewables industry.

  • Maybe has been discussed in previous years but how about removing showing both +ve and -ve votes and just show either just +ve votes or a total that shows +ve votes minus negative votes. Most posts that I see don't have a negative vote on it so why is it still being used, you have to make a comment anyway to show why you use a negative vote so just use the comments to show why you didn't upvote. I guess it is similar to how now Youtube show how many likes a video has and there is no downvoting anymore.

    • +1

Negative votes are important in deals as they highlight potential issues and reasons you may not want to buy a deal. If a deal has 100 upvotes and 10 downvotes I would definitely read the downvotes before jumping in and purchasing without thinking. 90 votes does not say the same thing - a deal with 90 positive votes and no negative votes is probably a much better deal.

  • Can we perhaps ban (Australian based) stores that do NOT include GST in their pricing, either on their website or as part of the deal?
    Example.

    • There are some valid reasons why an Australian based store is not showing GST included price. For example,

      • Business is not registered with GST, i.e. under $75k per year turn over.
      • Business is mostly selling to other business.

Neither are applicable to the Luxxi Home post you've linked. I am just pointing it out that we'll need to deal with it case by case rather than having a blanket ban.

  • How come no moderation action has taken place on this post yet? There's nine reports with the last one made two days ago; surely someone's figured out whether it's a legit post or not by now.

    • Something that's suspicious but we do not yet have enough evidence that it's sockpuppeting. Mods just left the reports there remaining unresolved, so we can come back to it later. Obviously we cannot dedicate an individual to work on this case for 2 days straight, as there are other reports to resolve, TWAMs to answer and deals/forum posts to fix.

Real sockpuppets might come back online with more evidence for us to dig through later. We'll mark it as "resolved" for now.

  • Suggestion, but at the top of store pages where you have cashback links, could you do a link to the wiki for discounted egift cards, if that store is in the list?

I get that the Ultimate cards etc would be a pita, and you could ignore those, but for the others it would be really handy :)

  • Merged from Site Suggestion: highlight OP on post comments

I like how Reddit highlights OP against comments on a post - I was wondering if OzBargain could do something similar?

So when ever someone makes a forum topic or deal if they make a comment there’s a little OP icon next to their name?

    What do you think?

    • This comment would have an OP symbol

      • +16

Ah…it already does as the op posts are grey background rows..
Similar to how your own posts are shown to you as a yellow background row

        • +4

Was going to say the same thing. And I like this system more than Reddit’s. This is a much easier way to quickly scroll through and find comments OP has made,

      • It's already highlighted.
        https://www.opsm.com.au/book-an-eye-test
^I'll just leave this here for you OP.

        • Fair enough.
No need to be rude about it though.

    • +8

Here since 2009 and you've never seen that op comments are a different colour?

    • +6

Why are people selecting Yes? The function already exists in the form of a glaringly obvious box.

    • +1

How about grey box and OP symbol? Grey box is a little hard to see on darkened screens at night in bed.

      • +2

        Get eyes checked

    • +1

I'd like an orange box for my own replies please

      /sarcasm

    • +3

Seems majorly redundant, given you can see OP posts in a gray box and your own posts in a yellow box …
Maybe add sparkles and flashing highlights, also add a party blower sound as you mouse over an OP comment …

    • Rather have JV comments unbolded by default than this.

    • +1

      Low key trolling?

    • +1

      Should’ve gone to Specsavers.

  • Hi
When I do search for a deal, the search results page doesn't seem to highlight the $ price in orange as they usually appear on the main deal pages?

  • For the Product subscriptions under Category subscriptions in the settings, could these please link to the product pages?

I'd like a easy way to see and go to my subscribed products.

Another option is to link to a filtered version of the Products page

    • link to the product pages?

      Yes we can do that.

filtered version of the Products page

Products page basically list all the product tags on the database, and allow you to search for specific ones. You'll still need to go to your subscription settings to see the list of products you have subscribed to.

  • how come i can't undo an upvote? I accidentally upvoted a deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/682118) and i can't undo it

    • You should be able to revoke your own votes through the 'votes' tab.

      • Ahh.. that fixed it!

  • +1

It seems like deals have some way to automatically recognize the product being talked about in a deal, you can see this with the "related products" section which links to a specific product historical deals.

I think a really cool feature would be to automatically search through these related deals and display some price stats for the product historically (according to ozbargain). For exmple you iterate over each deal and then just find the lowest historical price and then display it on the latest deal page. Maybe some other stats as well like lowest in the past year or 5, average price, average for the last year, etc.

Maybe attach one or two stats on the deal page and then you can click the "related products" link and on that page there can be more detailed pricing stats.

    • Been mentioned hundreds of times, not that easy to implement

      • Not sure where it was mentioned previously. Could you refer to some of them?
Nor why you would think it's not easy to implement.

        • -1

Could you refer to some of them?

Why is that up to me?

    • Association between posts and products aren't "automatic", but work of moderators, power users and the original poster, where they have tag the deal with specific product. Taggings are often full of errors that need to be fixed by the moderators. We can't parse the price either as there are many factors that need to be considered. So no, we don't want to do these.

There are other websites that track retail prices for example PriceHipster and LittleBirdie — maybe these will be useful to you.

  • morning guys,
on the Live Action page, is it possible to put on an option of having a beep/sound off when a new deal (or other options as ticked) appears ?
Thought it might be useful so we don't have to keep glancing at it. Or a * on the title of that particular tab to indicate new event.

Or even something like this hahaha

    • idea #2
a small green/red box indicating if connection lost (thus the live action page won't be refreshing)
