    Deli manager probably over-ordered chickens.

    Woohoo, discount Batchelor Handbag's!

I wonder these days still do half price just before store closing for the day.

Hardly seen any reduction these days…. another good old day story…

    • Perhaps depends on the store. I grab regularly at $5. Sometimes even during the day they discount to $5 and my guess comes down to more out back ready to load but too many on hand at the time.

Yeah, it seems to be an individual thing (though I think they have less price discretion than they used to - but your comment above still seems to suggest some have more than others!)

Back when I used to see it, I'd occasionally visit another store but not see it there. And even when I shopped a different day e.g. weekend instead of weekday at the same store, it wouldn't happen. So seems to be based on staff member working that day whether it happens or not.

it depends on how good their 'product planning' is

its regularly $6-7 here but you're getting a bird thats been sitting their for a while

i admit that the chicken is pretty damn good when its fresh out of the big gas oven

          • @tonyjzx: I find them very salty….way too much seasoning! The ones without stuffing are a little better but still very salty,

    • Haven't seen any reduction at Woolies for years, more common at Coles

    • Here’s my observations based on visiting 15 or so Woolworths and Woolworths Metro stores in the last year:

      Roast Chickens

I have rarely seen Woolworths stores mark down roast chickens towards closing time, but that’s probably due to the roast chickens actually being sold out (or thrown out) 30-60 minutes before closing.

      • I was at Woolworths a couple of nights ago an hour before closing time, and I spotted a single roast chicken marked down to $4.70. It was marked down 120 and 90 minutes before closing time, and I was waiting a couple of minutes for staff to mark it down again, but someone else took it lol. Oh well, I guess at least someone enjoyed a roast chicken!

      • Once I saw a Woolworths Metro have five roast chickens on the shelf at normal price 60 minutes before closing time with a store’s flatbed trolley next to it (only used by the staff), and then I saw a staff member load the roast chickens onto the trolley and take them out to a staff-only area.

      Bakery Items

For stores with an in-store bakery, in-store baked bread is no longer marked down (and I gathered this intel from different stores):

      • Thanks to the boom in online orders driven by the pandemic, a lot of online orders are packed in the evenings and towards closing time. If the online order included marked-down bread, it would be sold at the marked-down price (not the full-price displayed on the website), which would mean a refund would likely have to be processed for that online order.

      • Some of these stores shifted to marking down day-old bread before opening time and selling it marked down from opening time, but I noticed that stopped a few weeks later. I think the stores were not too thrilled with selling day-old bread…

      • Nearly all of these stores now simply do not mark down any in-store baked bread and donate unsold bread at the end of the day. One store said they donate it to farmers so that the bread can be turned into animal feed. (Yay?) I wonder if other stores donate it to food charities or community groups (which is what a lot of Bakers Delights stores do).

      • For other in-store baked items (e.g. mini pavlovas, custard tarts, tea cakes), they are still marked down, but the time of day they are marked down depends on who is managing the bakery that day. At one store I visited, the bakery manager discounts these other in-store baked items by 80% around 6pm, but if someone else is in charge of the bakery that day, they will start marking these items down around midday and progressively discount it as the afternoon and evening and night rolls on, assuming someone remembers to do that.

For stores that do not have an in-store bakery, they still mark down Woolworths-branded bread placed in the bakery department (i.e. the bread baked outside the store and sold in lieu of in-store baked bread). However…:

      • One store I have visited marks down that Woolworths-branded bread towards the end of the day it arrives at the store, which means the bread is sold a few days before its best-before date.

      • One Woolworths Metro I have visited only marks down some of their Woolworths-branded bread on the day of the best-before date. I haven’t asked the store manager why they do that, but I find it curious, especially since other Woolworths-branded bread (e.g. stone-baked bread loaves) are marked down towards the end of the day it arrives at that same store. It’s a weird policy…

    No hoarding please

they are 3 dollars here in my local coles in Vic after 9pm (if there is any left over)

    • +2

      That's brilliant
My local coles used to reduce them to $2. Was great going down there around 9 and picking up a few for cheap protein + dog food. Then they started using them to make their 'fresh packed lunches' the next day, so felt no need to reduce them any more.

  • Can anyone who works at Coles or Woolies deli explain what is wrong with the bbq chicken there?

I befriended the entire woolies team as I had a shop next to them and I once asked a woolies deli guy if he ever eats the bbq and he said "NO WAY!" with a disgusted expression.

Another time I asked a bloke at the checkout if he ever buys the reduced bbq chooks at the end of the night and he said never touches that and explained the deli staff just take the leftovers out to the back then throw is in the bin. Staff must purchase the chooks - cannot take for free at the end of the night.

    • Maybe they're just a sloppy fatty mess, not even big like the chooks in the old days and a lot more expensive. Maybe they don't want the hormones

  • my local coles and woolies both reduce at the end of the night. They must roll their eyes everytime they see the cheapskateasian turn up at the end of the night to buy the reduced chooks!

Reduced bakery good and reduced coleslaws and pototo salads make a great combo with the reduced chooks!

  • driving up from melbourne to buy a few
