  • I still have the original HE-400 from years ago. I wonder how these compare.

  • primarily for music?

  • Just to confirm, the review on Audiosciencereview is the stealth magnets version, which is what is being sold here. I bought these headphones from the same seller on Amazon just before xmas (same price). The box has a sticker on the outside saying stealth magnets version. It came with the crappy 3.5mm white cable which, per audio science review forums, looks like Hifiman has recently updated to a better black cable.

    • Is this 400se good in your opinion? compare to say Sein’s 600 or other popular headphones, or even Bose’s qc35?

      • +3

HD600 are my main headphones so I can compare. I also have QC35 II. I listen to a bit of everything but the HD600s, while great allrounders, I find lack a bit of bass extension to bring out the best in rock and metal. I tried out the Audeze LCD-X which are obv a completely diff price. They sound amazing but were just so heavy. A mate has the Hifiman Sundara and I liked them a lot, but based on ASR thought I'd try the 400SE for less than half the price. I think the are good and am I'm happy with them. If I didn't have the HD600s I'd probably get the Sundara as my allrounder. Freq response of the 400SE out of the box is more similar to the Bose than my Senny. Hope that helps! Oh, I listen mostly through my M1 Macbook Air using Tidal to Topping E30 and L30

    • What's better about the cable? More durable?

      • +1

Yep apparently. The white cable also creates noise I can hear if they move while listening. I guess they had to cut corners somewhere. I'll replace them eventually

  • In China it's 150$ something? I remember

    • Didn't have stealth magnets, but it's unclear how much they help with their lowest quality planar driver.

  • +4

It's an enticing prospect up against the AKG K601, but this is a standard price, and has been for a while. Don't rush to buy without considering your options.

  • Completely different price bracket, but has anyone have the hifiman edition xs yet? I see them popping up at more retailers, but haven't seen many reviews. I'm looking to pull the trigger

    • I'm watching the XS closely as well. Cheapaudioman is one of the first YouTubers to post his impressions if you're looking for a review and there's a decent thread on headfi.org with feedback/opinions from early adopters.

      • What's your thoughts? Is what you're reading getting you more interested in buying?

        • Definitely :). I'm a fan of the HFM sound and have the 35x, 400SE and 560v4. I was interested in the Sundara but decided to bypass it and go Ananda but with the XS reviewing closer to Ananda and cheaper, it is very appealing.

  • I've had these for a few months and I love them. I use them for mixing and mastering and find the sound signature very neutral and natural and clear., so I really trust them now. Can listen for hours. They need a bit of extra power to get the most out of them, and the stock white cable they came with last year is shocking, but I would definitely buy again.

  • Are Chinese brands like HiFiMan really better at the same price points as decades old established brands like Sennheiser?

    • Short answer yes. I bought some from this deal and compared them to my brother's hd600-650 which is like twice the price and they were pretty (profanity) close coming from the same amp. Maybe the sennheiser had a bit more range, but we're not sure if that was just because they were a bit louder lol.

I have some with an amp and they're blowing my mind. It seems preposterous how good they sound for 200 bucks. Never heard drums sound this good on headphones. If you have an amp or buy an amp these are crazy good value

      • Yea, I bought the new Topping DX3Pro+ Dac/Amp that was just released 2 months ago. Currently running with my Sennheiser HD6XX. Never tried planar headphones so I was intrigued.
