First post. Been keeping a quiet eye on this one since they announced the PS5 upgrade path.

The heatsink version of the ever popular SN850 NVMe M.2 Gen4 SSD 2TB is finally discounted.

Lowest price it's ever been by quite a margin according to CamelCamelCamel

Usually retails for $600-659 @ Amazon and local online retailers.

Non heatsink version is still ~$50 less if you don't need the heatsink or have one already.

Price History at C CamelCamelCamel.

Not announced yet - but WD is coming out with a SN850X. Still, this is a good price.

    • How will this differ and what benefits will it bring to the PS5?

    • +6

Will the new model load games 0.000000002 seconds faster?

      • +2

No idea! I'm betting they'll make it competitive against the Firecuda 530.

  • Without Heatsink for $429.44. Cant post link as it is spam apparently

That deal was listed last week

Info on posting Amazon links from one of the mods:

Clean Amazon URLS follow this format

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Shure-MV7X-Podcast-Microphone-Voic…

      or this

      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09BZZCGC8/

If you see this in the URL

      ?tag=googleshopdsk-

That probably means you've copied and pasted in a link directly from Google search result, which is a Google Shopping affiliate link. Just delete that bit and everything else after it and it should be fine.

Why won't Ozbargain let people make money finding and posting good deals?

    Um i'd rather grab a 980 Pro 2Tb for $421

Heatsink or no heatsink (not that you even need one for gaming).

    • +9

You do need one for PS5.

    • Does it still have cache issues?

    • +1

The WD has better write speeds as well. Not sure if it's $50 better, but it's something.

    • +4

Why would you not need heatsink for gaming? M.2 SSD will heat up in a small space, if you have it in a PS5 or laptop it won't be getting enough airflow to stay cool without a heatsink.

      • -3

Because thermal throttling doesn’t really impact gaming at all.

        • +2

The whole point of these really fast gen 4 SSDs for gaming is that they (will) need to be able to transfer massive texture files directly to the GPU. In the PS5 and games with directstorage support, having a thermally-throttled gen 4 SSD will make this texture streaming impossible to rely on

    • That's a great price. These do run cooler than the SN850 and only a little slower but I think you would still want a heatsink in a PS5.

just got to wait for them to break the $400 barrier now….

  • Any benefits significant benefits other than an extra 1tb for ps5 seems like an expensive storage upgrade

    • +6

An extra 2tb of storage as this supplements the original SSD not replaces it. The ps5 has about 800gb of usable storage which fills up pretty quickly.

      • +4

2TB is going to be the sweet spot for the upgrade for a while, especially with the compression they are rolling on PS5 games now. 2TB will probably hold 10-20 AAA games plus a bunch of indies. Although paying $450 to avoid having to aggressively manage your game installs is a decision I haven't quite come to.

        • +1

Same. Since getting gigabit net, I never even thought about getting additional storage including on pc. Then again, it might be different if you play cod.

  • How does this compare to a Samsung 970 Evo?

Planning build a pc and looking for SSD options.

    • +3

This is a Gen4 drive and more comparable to 980 Pro.

    • If your motherboard supports gen4 then get this since the 970 is gen3

  • Will this work on the PS5?

    • Yes.

  • Need extra storage for my PS5. Had having to delete 2 can't to install another. I do have all my PS4 games installed on an external HD. However, I agree, still a bit expensive. Will wait for prices to come down a bit.

  • I'm waiting and will not break. Sub $250 or bust.
