  • What are the requirements for bottle stamp dates etc

    • +7

Expires after 10 Years from manufacturing.

Then swap for new bottle anyway

      • +1

This isn't wrong but not entirely correct, bottles can be restamped after they've expired if they are still in good condition. I've personally filled bottles which have manufacturing dates in the 90's which have been recertified multiple times.

        • Also some info for my situation. My gas bottle has a “Tested 11-2006” date on it and I bought it in 2010 and am still using it. I was not aware they had to be retested every 10 years until my brother told me. You cannot return and swap out a expired bottle but I called my local Bunnings in Sydney and they said they will do it as a Swap n Go even though my bottle is a Kwik-Gas one. Bunnings use to sell these before moving to Swap n Go so they are going to honour my one as an exchange instead of me having to buy a new bottle and dispose my current one via local council chemical clean up / collection.

My advice - talk to your local Bunnings as they are pretty accomodating especially if the bottle you currently have was bought via one of their stores.

          • @D1977: You just go exchange, they never check

            • @MikeKulls: Ok but mine is not a Swap n Go branded one so I shared this info should anyone else had a different branded one.

    • +9

If you mean can you swap your expired bottle for a new one without issue the answer is yes.

      • +1

Yep, I've done it before (taken an old swapngo bottle that had expired and swapped for a fresh one)

        • +1

But be careful. I went to swap one and the yellow sticker was covering the expiry on the new bottle. They assured me it would be in date. Got home and pulled sticker off to reveal the new bottle was expired by 2 years.

          • +1

@emmanator12: Check for a second date on the bottle, they can be recertified which refreshes the 10 year period from the date.

Can often be quite hard to find this date on swap bottles since alot of brands paint over other brands which often makes these hard to read!

Cooler summer eastern Oz knocked gas sales down a bit ?…
or maybe Aust day coming up :)…

    • +4

Anaconda has refills for $19.99 if Bunnings not cheap nearby to you.

      • Only issue is Anaconda won't refill them if the bottle is "out of date" So once you have in in date bottle, keep it for refills, avoid swapping it as sometimes the swap bottles are out of date on the main stamp and its very hard to find the re-stamp

It's says $26.95 still in Brisbane QLD.

    • was about to say this ^^

  • How long before this deal expires?

  • Still $26.95 in nsw

    • +1

      SA too

  • Same for Victoria. No deal

    • Check other stores in Vic.

    • What do you mean no deal,I paid the $26.95 at Bunnings a couple of months ago….

      • +1

Still showing $26 for stores in the west vic

        • Maybe someone can post There docket from Bunnings on here….

          BBQ’s Galore refill for 20 bucks for a 9kg all the time….

  • Still $26.95 in vic the store i went to..

    • Should be $19.80. I'm in Vic northern suburbs, no where near Collingwood (for example, which also has same price)

      • Collingwood and where else?

        • Nowhere else….

          • @JimmyF: Actually I happened to find the price at Doncaster but no stock…

            • @sween64: Is Collingwood the only one with stock?… As Brunswick and a few other stores around that area for example has it as $19.80 but again no stock…..

              • @JimmyF: From the mods, Thomastown as well…

              • @JimmyF: Coburg is usually the go to store in the northern suburbs

  • Can I swap if the expired bottle still have gas?

    • +4

      Yes you can.
Why not use the gas first?

      • Netbies wants fresh gas

        • +2

Interesting choice. The gas is probably around 1 million years old and has a near infinite shelf life ….

        • New gas burns hotter, smells cleaner and looks prettier. Snags taste better too.

      • +1

if you only have one bottle and need a full one for a function/ party … i have 3 bottles, all ones people have out out with bbq for hardwaste collection …. swapped for full ones and in date ……

        • I've been doing the same and up to about 9 9kgs right now.
Currently using a 4.5kg I found last collection day that was full of gas.
I've been thinking of turning a few into ozpigs for gifts this year.

  • so its a a Melbourne/Victoria thing?

  • +3

OP, you sure you got pricing right?

    $19.88 for the 3.7kg
    $26.95 for the 8.5kg

    (ACT)

    • Yep, sorry, thought it was nationwide. Vic only. hopefully that changes.

      • It's not even Vic only. I popped a few Melbourne stores in, some were your price, others were $26.95.

        • -1

Mods updated title to reflect that.

In the past, it has been a nationwide deal, so hopefully it's just rolling out everywhere.

  • all bunnings? showing normal price on their website

    • -2

      See [VIC] in title

  • How long does this last if you use it for daily cooking? A month?

    • about a month for me. Depends on your style of cooking as well

      • hook it up to rambo wok burner , they eat gas …… my 2 burner bbq, used 2 x per week lasts for months …..

    • If i didn't forget to turn the gas of during pyrolytic cleanibg mode, it last well over 6 months for me on the weber.

      • Webber has a pyrolytic cleaning mode?

        • Just turn it on high heat for an hour and all cleaning is minimal.

          • @lgacb08: That's what i do. Still lasts me 2yrs with my usage

    • That depends how long you cook for and how high the heat setting is.

    • About the same length as that piece of string

      • Mine lasts at least twice that long.

Should I drive to Vic for a bottle change?…decision…

    • +4

According to your account you're already in Vic

      • -5

Yes but country Vic isn't close to metro Vic if that makes sense to you

        • +10

Country Vic and Metro Vic are both in Vic

          • @spaceflight: But he'd have to pass thru Dan's Ring Of Steal

            • @M00Cow: *Steel, unless this is supposed to be a political statement?

              • @shadow7412: State taxes are double inside the ring of steal.

              • @shadow7412: In the building industry, low quality steel (usually imported) is called steal…it looks good, but doesn't really work. Some mates who live Melb called it a ring of steal, because it looked good, but they & many others passed right through it.

      • yes we need the tourist dollars in vic ….

  • Considering 8.5kg is about 17 litres, and LPG is $1.20/l at the bowser here, that is about the same price per litre. Bargain!!

It used to be half the price for cars, and I joked about putting a tap on it for the BBQ.

    • +4

It used to be half the price for cars, and I joked about putting a tap on it for the BBQ

You can fill a BBQ bottle from a car. People have done it and others have ended up in hospital trying.

      • +2

Funny I knew a bloke who made an adaptor to fill their gas bottles at the local servo with LPG.

  • $26.95 in 3206 (metro Melb)

  • +2

I went to Bunnings in the ACT today to grab a starter 8.5kg, and the refills are still $26.95.

  • +1

Checked 5 Bunnings around me in eastern Melbourne and site says 26.95

    • +1

Checked six Bunnings in Melb’s west and all are 26.95 - and all bar one are sold out anyway.

  • OP which store did you get this price from? Copy of receipt would be great!

    • Set your store to Collingwood

  • I done swap today at Bunnings when I ripped sticker off it said last check date 2008 ?

    • There is a second stamp. Usually towards the top right

  • +1

If you have a gas bottle that you own and it’s still in good Nick you can take it to places like Elgas and they’ll test the bottle and restamp it.

    A 2kg cost me 25 bucks filled ….

The reason I did this as all the new 2kg gas bottles wouldn’t fit upright in my Black Window drawers in my Hilux …. The older one did.

  • Got this in Vic Northern suburbs which was a nice surprise last week.

  • Is there a way to tell when the gas is running low?

      9kg Gas Bottle Empty Weight?
The weight range of 9kg gas bottle empty weight is 7.8kg to 10.4kg. The 9kg gas bottle empty weight, or tare weight, is stamped on the neck ring of the bottle. As there are many manufacturers of 9kg gas bottles, gas bottle sizes and gas bottle dimensions vary significantly.

To calculate the full weight, you add 8.5kg to the empty (tare) weight of the bottle and the total is the full weight.

Full Weight – Tare Weight = Gas Remaining

      • My Weber bbq shows how empty it is based off the weight, but I was thinking that cant be right since they don't all weight the same (as your post suggests as well)

        • There is probably a way to calibrate it to full when you put a new cylinder on. 8.5kg less is empty.

      • Cheers mate didn’t know this…

    • +2

Just grab a jug of hot water and pour it over the bottle. Run your hand down the canister until it feels cold, and that's the level the gas is at.

You could buy a gas safety fuse as well which has a gauge, the gauge is made in Germany and the German's really know their gas - have a look on eBay for the cheapest price.

      https://caravan.hemax.com/Reviews/3448/Safety_Gasfuse

      • I tried that there was gas left like at the bottom but not enough to start

      • The pressure in the bottle does not change until almost empty. So the gauge only gives a brief warning. Weight is better.

As a safety device, it is a bit redundant. The way here is to connect a regulator direct to the bottle. After that, there is only low pressure, so a leak is limited.
A small leak is not dangerous outdoors.

        • But measuring the weight in real life is probably a pain in the arse for most people, the gauge purportedly has 1 hour of burn time left once it reports as being 'low' so good enough for a final BBQ, that's probably a pretty good indication for most infrequent BBQ'ers to go and get the bottle replaced.

Personally I bought it to use as an easy to use 'rough' guide to how full my gas bottle is, any additional safety features it might have regardless as to how marginal are an added bonus.

          • @shutuptakemymoney101: If you don't have a gauge, pretty easy to weigh yourself first without the bottle then with, difference of those two minus tare weight equals gas remaining

            • @TEER3X: My gas bottle is securely fastened and locked onto my camper trailer, reading a gauge is the easiest method for me by far.

          • @shutuptakemymoney101:

a pretty good indication for most infrequent BBQ'ers to go and get the bottle replaced.

For the same price, you can buy a second cylinder, and just swap when needed, no rush to replace or worries about running out on the big Xmas day bbq. The "fuse" is a gimmick that profits from scaring people.

            • @bargaino: Weight and space is a consideration for campers, lugging another gas bottle around on the off chance the first may run out isn't always the best solution.

      • German's really know their gas
