I was happy for 2 seconds thinking the iPhone 12 is $200. Is this a clickbait?

Putting the actual price instead of amount of discount in the title is less confusing.

    • +1

I’m not sure how you could think that… Like if it was $200 that would be obvious scam.

      • The production cost of an iPhone is closer to $200 than $1800, right?

        • +3

Yeah but common folk will never get it for that price new.

          • @smartazz104: I'm quite shocked that Apple is selling so well at these prices. They clearly are able to offer good value, like they do with Apple TV or even MacBook Air at the entry level, but their ability to sell iPhones at these hugely inflated prices will surely become legendary if it hasn't already.

      • Because 99% of the deals have the price posted in the title.

  • +34

    That's a lot of money for a 15 month-old phone.

    • +44

Thats a lot of money for a phone FULL STOP

        My point still stands.

        • +7

I used to struggle justifying $1200 for iPhones in the early days. Current day prices are crazy. Least these prices make it a good excuse to hold onto my phones longer.

          • @Slo20: My last two galaxy s phones lasted my almost 4.5 years and cost $1400 and $1200.

            • @onlinepred: That’s a lot. Samsung fones tend to be sub $900 if u hold out 2 months

              • +1

@Gavman: If you could get the ultra 256gb for less than $1000 2 months after launch, please show me where.

        What's an iPhone 4?

    • +1

the true cost of ownership is purchase price - resell price. It will mostly work out much better than other phones in my experience

      • +3

This. Especially if you can clam the device on tax or salary sacrifice. I actually save money doing this every year and get a new phone.

        • +2

spot on and still doing it. also the best part of selling an iPhone is, it sells really fast even it is an old phone. Android phone on the other hand, not many buyers

          • +1

@fan8956: Depends on the Android phone. Samsung now has quite a strong influence on consumers, they sell much better than they used to

        • How do you do this? Just curious.

          • +4

@petergriffinoz: If you can salary sacrifice the phone, you won't pay GST or your marginal tax rate which can save around 1/3 of the phone price for the average Australian salary. It brings the actul cost of the phone down for example:

            $1699 (New Iphone 13 Pro)
            Less GST = $1545
            Less Marginal Tax = ~$1050

Then, after 12 months, as long as you keep the phone in good condition (I always use a screen protector and case), you will have no problem selling the phone for that initial cost, if not more. FWIW, I did this on the 12 Pro at $1699, and sold it for $1250 so I actually ended up $200 or so better off. I then buy the brand new iPhone 13 (which I have already done) and do it again in 12 months time.

iPhones have a much better resale value than android phones, Samsung Galaxy series are the best for android, but still not as good as iPhone.

            • @Pelicannn: Thanks, I'll look into it. Keen to give it a try now!

            • @Pelicannn: you'd have to be a healthcare worker or work for a charity to salary sacrifice a phone no? I could be wrong but I doubt most employees can do that.

              • @Marmaduke: I work for the government but not healthcare, but yes it is job specific, hence the ‘if’.

      • +2

so you trying to say iPhone users buying iPhone to actually SAVE their money. Now I understand why Steve Jobs is a marketing genius lol

  • +2

For 200$ off it’s not a good deal

  • +15

Horses for courses but I think for $1850ish (full apple rate), I’d take an iPhone 13 pro 256gb over a 12 pro 512gb.

Some would use the extra space but if you have an iCloud account then a lot of the space isn’t utilised on the phone and the cameras/processor upgrade in the 13 are worth it for the long run I reckon. Each to their own

    • +1

      Yep, me too.

    • Definitely

    • Rightio

    • +1

Resale values will probably make up more than the difference too.

  • +5

Given the previous deal of the iPhone pro 13 128gb for $1,500 (out of stock within 8hrs) from costco, this appears overpriced for a year older model, albeit double the storage.

    • Agreed. On the topic, in this day and age what would people possible need the storage up to 512GB for?

      • I have no idea. Perhaps subscription model saturation and privacy related reasons, or alternatively, storage is cheap?

Rumour is that the Samsung S22 ultra will have a 1tb option.

        • Who would want insane price phone with 1TB (unless you are billionaire) when 256GB good microSD costs ~ $30 & you can have few as backup, or swap with your camcorder/SLR's?
I paid $108 for very fast 1TB Samsung T5 USB-C fast SSD (now have T7 even faster).

      • +1

If you go out of internet zone, want to copy some stuff from friend, record 8k video at special event (on >Galaxy S21ultra, 36GB/hr, <4h if you have nothing on the phone).
If you want to keep your phone longer, as Apple assumes 5 years(?), you need to invest in memory or get external backup storage.

I have 2.5y old Galaxy Note 10+ with 256G internal, few microSD 256G (best value) & USB-C Samsung T7 1TB as backup (very fast) & 20TB NAS cloud. I don't want to rely on crappy NBN or expensive cloud storage (only for docs or photos).

        • That's awesome…however O365 home with 6 users at 1 TB each and office for about $90 - 100 per year is hardly over priced… Just my opinion and use case having a family 🙂

          • +1

@scud70: Combining both is even better. If you go on vacation without the internet, fast copy of media via PC & microSD or external USB-C SSD will provide easy fun. You can exchange/backup video from others & many things when the internet access is not practical or expensive.

        • Exactly my point.

Those instances you've outlined almost never happen to the overwhelming majority.

      • I have less than 400GB free on my 1TB iPhone 13 Pro.

        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/241169/93768/4ff2147f-…

        • I can only assume you're adverse to cloud storage…

          • @R00D: On the contrary, my iPhone is completely backed up to my iCloud account. I just prefer to keep all my images and videos available locally as well.

  • +6

The marketing team at Apple are the hardest working in that company. There is no other justification that anyone would consider this a deal…

    • +1

they just find their market's niche or may I say a flock to become their Sheppard

  • +1

Same price as jb hi fi how is this a deal?

    • If you have been saving TCN/ TUGC, another 10%~15% off.

  • +6

Apple are the kings being able to command upward to $2k for superceded stock. It's mindboggling

    • +3

Create your own platform, OS, don't share it with other manufacturers. No competition.

      • and no cross-platform scalability :( Even Apple is never stuck to 1 supplier.
You have much better value with smartphones ;) vs iPhones.

        • Unless you look after your Apple product and can sell it for good $$ on the healthier second hand market.

    • +2

It’s not all bad tho. Their phones are quality built, their software aren’t as prone to virus and privacy leaks and the expensive price means better resell value when reselling you tend to make back ton load more than non Apple that depreciate much faster.

      • By the same logic, manual screwdriver is more reliable & will depreciate less than power-drill which has much more functionality than the 1st ~ iPhone.
Or you are paying BMW price for Mini Morris (iPhone) which breaks less because has simpler electronics.

  • +2

Can get 3 of the latest models of Samsung flagship with some of the recent deals going on in the same price. Or can buy an outdated iPhone.

    • +2

Its like saying you can get 3L lpg gas for the price 1L petrol. Or 3L workshop ethanol for a 1L bottle of Gin.

      • +1

Exactly .. there is no case where 3L of LPG or Ethenol would be better than 1 litre of petrol.
Infact I would argue if even it comes out top in a 1 to 1 comparison.
Now Apple sure has a loyal simp fan boy following. Case in point in the previous comment.

        • +1

Not sure if you're arguing for my point or against my point since your comment is grammatically riddled.

          • -1

@sunnyc: Sorry you have trouble reading English. Let me know if your prefer another language, can google translate it for you before posting.

            • +1

@pompompom: see again gramatical error. Please translate it to English.

            • @pompompom: Ĝuste .. ne estas kazo kie 3L da LPG aŭ Etenolo estus pli bona ol 1 litro da benzino. Fakte mi argumentus, se eĉ ĝi elirus supre en 1 al 1 komparo. Nun Apple certe havas lojalan simpatian fanknabon sekvantan. Kazo en la antaŭa komento.

              Kiel estas via angla nun?

    • Wait 3 months and u get 6. Or u can get 1 quality phone that will still be worth 80-90% what you paid 12-18 months down the track. Mind you I would go the iPhone 13 over this for this reason.

      • +1

All flagships are quality phones. Android has come a far way and you can't go wrong with flagships. Please get over your fan boy mentality that only apple is capable of building quality phones.
You talk about resale values as if you are buying a car or a house.

      • +1

If you bought something and is worried about depreciation then buying a chunk of gold is probably better for you.

        • A chunk of gold can't make calls or install apps

  • Good to see my 14 month old phone is still holding its value.

    • I'm "disappointed" that my 2.5y Galaxy Note 10+ doesn't hold as much value$, but has much more functional value than the latest iPhones ;)
Next time I will buy the most functional smartphone that doesn't hold value after 1y. Win-win$.

      • I'm finding it very functional. I can't think of a function I need that the iPhoned doesn't perform.
