Free to Stream - 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup @ Kayo Sports

1801

https://www.theroar.com.au/2022/01/23/womens-wc-made-free-by…

The women’s Cricket World Cup will be removed from a paywall after Alyssa Healy labelled the Nine Network’s failure to pick up the event as a “slap in the face”.

Foxtel have since confirmed to AAP they made the call on Sunday to make it part of their “freebies pack”, meaning viewers will be able to watch it on Kayo without a subscription.

    Riverting stuff this.

    • +5

I don't understand why this wasn't just listed in the Freebie section ? Foxtel had the rights to it and confirmed they never had any intention of charging anyone to watch it, hence they dumped it out as a free listing on Kayo.

Also, the absolute fantasy land the women's cricketers are living in, is sheer comedy gold (https://www.theroar.com.au/2022/01/23/womens-wc-made-free-by…). They actually think their 11yr old school boy level of cricket standards is not only something anyone would care about or have interest in, they think it's "offensive" that they aren't a commercially viable product. As if being a commercially viable product is somehow something you are meant to take turns in being, or something?

      • +1

The cost of streaming this is too high given the power for the TV and router. No deal.

    Yawn

Ozbargain has become a haven for numerous princesses. People can't even speak the truth.
Most don't even watch men's cricket why would they find the women's version entertaining

      • +27

Because there are millions of other websites available for people to 'speak the truth'.
People come here for bargains, not political, religious, or personal commentary.

      • -4

This is society today. In order to be moral you simply have to be seen by others to say what's right and what's wrong - nothing more.

The fact that behind closed doors such an individual watches reality TV (primarily denigrates women) and not women's sport or as you say, any sport, that's for them to know about, not you.

  • +38

If no one wants to watch you playing sport for free, how is it the Nine Network's fault for not paying to televise it?

    • +22

It's about equity you see… like the AFLW. You keep pouring money into a liability for social reasons.

People like Healy, they're part of the 'women's sport is only less popular because of a lack of exposure' crowd.. No, men are the primary sport consumers. Unless they can see some skin, they want to watch men compete. Sorry to break reality to people, it's biology.

      • +8

I guess someone as narrow minded as you wouldn't be their target audience anyway. Women's tennis seems to be able to have a market in it's own right.

Change takes a generation. Even in 'elite' mens sports. New AFL teams (like the swans) struggled to get a hold of the market but now their the largest supported AFL team. While it might not be popular now the little girls that do watch it see it as viable career and will push the sport further.

I really do feel sorry for all the women and girls in your life.

        • +19

The reality is, I would watch more women's sport than 99% of women. They call out the problem, then go and watch the dating / reality TV type shows, which are always the highest rating and predominantly driven by women. Not to mention, for the most part they denigrate women.

I agree it's important for girls to see women successful in sport to drive their interest. What I don't agree with is the hypocrisy coming from people who don't put their money and time where their mouths are.

        • +8

Tennis is another great example of "equality". Tickets to the men's games are 2-3x the price of the women, but the prize money is the same.

          • +4

@iseeyou1312: People would likely pay more to see a longer women's match. Female tennis players are elite athletes who would be capable of playing longer matches why have they not changed the format of the game to match the more popular longer male matches?

          • +3

@iseeyou1312: Not to mention the women's game gained the popularity it has because they play along with men at the major tournaments. Rather than appreciate this fact, they demand the same amount of money as the men for playing less - best of 3 sets as opposed to 5 for the men.

        • +4

          You don't live in reality.

People don't pay as much for an inferior product. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Start paying 'equal' money instead of a market rate and you will start encouraging certain people to identify a certain way if they can't compete with the men.

      • +2

There's been a visible improvement in the AFLW since its inception. Yes, the quality is lower than the main comp, but only the most deranged people would try to claim they're equivalent - right now AFLW is at the semi-pro level, and trending upwards.

But the more interesting observation is that the creation and promotion of AFLW has led to a huge increase in female grassroots AFL. Which is where you'll begin to see a lot more talent begin to emerge over the next decade or two, which if all goes well will result in a women's league that—if not equal to the men's—will be a decent watch with a good sized supporter base and deep talent pool.

Don't view the AFLW as a league that's perfectly equal to the main men's competition. View it as a complementary comp that attracts a lot more women to the code, but is entertaining in its own right to bring everybody along for the fun.

    Great initiative by Kayo!

Should have been on FTA but glad to see they have stepped up

    • +21

The federal government gave another $10m to the Murdoch-controlled Foxtel last year to boost women's and underrepresented sport.

Don't make this out like they are doing something for the greater good.

      • +9

Well, the government always gives Murdoch money. In reality it's just to increase their own presence on the Murdoch news network which is pretty much liberal propaganda these days, so don't make it out like the feds did this for the greater good either. Murdoch is welcome to boost it behind a paywall, in reality he didn't like the bad press, plus he could stick his middle finger up at channel 9 at the same time.

      • If they were doing something for the greater good, they'd be depositing women's cricket in the dumpster and putting on something commercially viable instead.

      • Still could have charged for it, 9 didn't put it on FTA so maybe the Gov should give them some money

    • +10

Foxtel got $40mill from the fed government for "promoting women's and niche sports" - so it's the taxpayer (ie you and me) paying directly for this

      • Well worth it then

Maybe the Government should hand more money to FTA channels to put it on there instead

  • +27

No one wants to pay to watch it, how are they blaming nine for not wanting to waste airtime showing it

  • +43

    Can’t wait to miss this…

      • +18

        The irony.

      • +2

I enjoyed women's soccer and basketball. You couldn't pay me to watch cricket. Nothing about being the women league.

        • +3

By that logic, maybe I should go comment on the EV posts about how I prefer internal combustion engines or something.

        • +1

Women's beach volleyball is fantastic, too.

      • +1

Some people might not have seen women's sport and accidentally watch this.

I'm thankful that someone has endured the pain and felt compelled to help others avoid his mistake.

    • I have to supervise having my kitchen cleaned that week.

  • +4

    What a bargain!

  • +24

    Classic cricket australia greed
The mens game of cricket wasn't grown by foxtel and paytv
It was grown by Channel nine and having it free to air was the key, something to be enjoyed by all.

The day they sold it to foxtel/seven was a joke.

And both the mens and womens game are forever poorer because of it

And its not the failure of nine
Nine has tried to work with cricket australia, but cricket australia only saw $$$'s and not the viewership

    • +4

I know Channel 9 was a bit of an old mans club but Channel 7 sure know how to make a sport dull AF. There is nothing memorable or exciting about Channel 7 coverage.

Sometimes you need to pick broadcasting rights for the good of the sport, not for how fat it will make your wallet.

Even the men's ashes this year was a "yawn fest"

you would have been disappointed if you paid for it on Kayo rather than watching it on FTA

        • +2

This is my biggest problem with women's cricket, it's not competitive. There are two outcomes, Australia wins or Australia has an uncharacteristic collapse and someone else wins for a change.

Ellyse Perry used to both bowl and bat better than about 90% of the players out there. The pipeline of players is very slowly growing as interest builds, but it's decades off being like tennis. There's 30+ cricket matches in this tournament and the only ones anyone will watch in Australia are Australia vs England or India. SA will really struggle without Dane van Niekerk and NZ hasn't had a great run lately even though they're playing at home.

The problem isn't promoting cricket in Australia, it's the lack of any competition globally. The WBBL final got over half a million viewers (compared to 1.4m for the men's last year), there's some interest there, we have good players and a slowly growing pipeline. India treats women's cricket like a joke, even when they came runners up in the T20 world cup it took the BCCI over a year to actually give them their winnings (which the ICC paid for, all the BCCI had to do was distribute it to the players and they didn't bother).

        Just woke-ers

    • all cricket is for lemmings.

    • +3

No it's not even to that standard really… Honestly maybe B or C grade year 12 cricket… Maybe.

      • +1

That's pretty offensive to those in the U16's C-Grade comp's, to be honest.

    • +3

Meg Lanning was playing first XI boys cricket for Carey in the APS when she was in year 10…

      • -1

Did she do any good though? Or was it just a bit of a "woke" moment for the school?

In today's society, most likely #2.

I see plenty of articles proclaiming how great she must have been playing in boys first XI, but none on her actual record or performance… Which I assume if it was even half decent would be included.

        • +1

Well known to be one of the best players on that Carey team in 07/08 - primarily as a bowler!

          • @doctorbargain: Can't females just leave boys sport for boys?

You don't see blokes going into women's sport and ruining it.

            • +1

              @Ghos7: what?!?

              • +1

@Radar: Do you see guys going into women's sport and ruining it?

                • +2

@Ghos7: Can't say that I've seen anyone ruining sport, or even heard of women "ruining" sport. But I'd believe stories of you ruining everything you participate in.

                  • -2

@Radar: You've never heard of any woman ruining sport? You must live a very sheltered life if you've never heard of women cheating.

  • +3

What else is in this "freebies pack" you speak of?

    • -2

Insert dark joke about other gender specific sports.

  • +8

I wonder if they are doing this for Murdoch getting more millions in government grants

    https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/feb/03/australias-aud…

Leave it up to apprentices and trainees it would seem

“Fox Sports should never have been given $40m of taxpayer money to broadcast women’s sport. If they’re going to do a half-arsed job, they should give the money back and it can go to the public broadcasters who should have gotten it in the first place.”

    • +1

      $40M isn’t enough. $100M tax-payer funded donation - now we’re taking.

    • Tuba Guy!

    • LMAO the lefties moaned about womens sport until Murdoch was given tax payer money.

      This is priceless!

      • Username doesn't check out. Rusted on Morrison lover.

Only way Murdoch can actually turn a profit.

        • LOL you cry about Murdoch and you cry about how unfair biology is and then you cry when daddy government gives Murdoch money to make everything fair again.

That's the sort of dumb outcome you get when you're not guided by first principles.

You're closer to Scrott than I am. I'm in a completely different universe to you two.

  • -5

OMG. I’m not even into men’s cricket. I rather watch lawn bowls!

    • +7

      Rather watch the lawn grow.

    • +14

OMG, lucky no one’s forcing you to watch it. Imagine that!

    • I'd rather watch a cricket

  • +8

I managed to watch a few minutes of a game during peak COVID lockdown and noticed that the crowd seemed to be slightly larger than what it was pre-lockdown…

That being said, is there an option for me to get paid to watch this?

    • +9

      Be an umpire

  • +1

I'm already in countdown mode 😆

  • +6

    lmao…. no

  • +2

Yeah, nah. But should have always been free, not just because someone whinged about it. But there is a reason it wasn’t picked up to play live on FTA TV…

  • +8

The Kayo experience is far better than nine, as a sports fan who already has kayo the more things on kayo the better, the Olympics where absolutely butchered by channel 7, 9 fills every break with invasive LOUD ads that just ruin the mood of the room. FTA need to up their game

    • +6

Agreed. Cricket is so much better on Kayo without the ads interrupting constantly.

    • This. There's always those loud as fk Harvey Norman ads among others that totally ruin the vibe.

I'm glad I get Kayo through my Telstra phone plan for $5 per month.

  • +1

How do you stream Kayo without an account?

    • You don't.

    • You can create an account for free on Kayo's website (or use an existing account that no longer has an active subscription). You don't need to be a paying customer to watch Kayo Freebies content, including the Cup next month. Content that is not available will have a padlock next to the event tile.

  • +10

I quite like the storyline on this.
The WWC/Kayo-only deal was announced, Alyssa Healy jumped on social media and called it out, and backed it up by offering to shout 20 Kayo Gift Cards for fans who wanted to watch the games. Kayo spotted her tweet, and responded by offering to remove the paywall for those games.
Whether people like to watch it or not, kudos to Ms Healy and Kayo for doing something positive.
It should probably never have come to that point, since Foxtel gets specific federal funding to broadcast women's sports, but still, a decent outcome.
Now Ms Healy, if you want to watch the Indy 500…

    • +1

Sounds like a pre-arranged publicity stunt for Kayo…
Healy is a Foxtel employee too I believe.

    • +1

Still, nobody is going to watch this.

  • +16

Pretty appalling misogynistic and sexist comments above.

If you don't like it, fair enough, but there's no need to make jokes at their expense when it's already hard enough for women in sport due to things like this.

Well done for being part of the problem.

    • +4

      Well said

    • +20

You don't see them promoting men's ballerina with tax payers dollars do ya?

    • +4

      Pretty appalling feminist comment.
Comment are aiming at cricket, not so much gender. I love women's soccer, basketball, tennis.
You're part of the problem turning everything about gender.

      • +12

While I'll agree that some of the comments may be referring to cricket in general, there are still people being blatantly sexist.

May as well watch top grade school or club cricket…..its the same standard
No it's not even to that standard really… Honestly maybe B or C grade year 12 cricket… Maybe.
Only a bargain if they paid us to watch this

If you take a look at other deals for Cricket such as Ashes Day 5 in Sydney and Ashes Day 5 in Adelaide there's basically nobody bashing the sport itself.

People have come here because they saw cricket + women and thought they'd try and be funny.

        • +17

I wouldn't have a problem if the women's teams for all sports didn't keep jumping up and down about how they should be paid the same as the men's teams… They are literally subsidised by the men's team as it stands now.

You keep saying we are the problem… You know what the actual problem is with women's sport? Women don't watch it.

          • +3

@Binchicken22: Problem is the quality of women's sports. For me, that decides the viewership.
When Australia was world number 5 in women's football, Australia's national women's football were literally smashed in the lead up to the Rio Olympics - going down 7-0 to the Newcastle Jets under-15 boys side.

In terms of equality, there is no equality. Otherwise, we would have men and women playing tennis and football in the same league.
So, please- the two are separate, yet, for equity ( not equality), we have to provide equal opportunities to women.
We have to do much better to promote women in sports, and men and women have to work together.

The quality, however, has to improve from women. The effort has to be put in not just by the athletes, but also other women to get off the couch and go watch women's sports. Also, switch from watching The Bachelor to women's sports.

Also, Tennis, where the prize money is the same, actually, women are much better off!
Although the prize money is the same, their game tickets are 1/3rd the price, for just 60% of the actual game (best of 3 sets, instead of best of 5).

So, women, please do not accuse men of misogynistic and sexist comments, and start watching and contributing to women sports.
Once the quality of competition and performance is better, it will automatically get more viewership.
In the interim, the government will keep on trying to pay to try and get more women into the sport.

        • +1

you can call him sexist but you can't call him a liar

      • +5

Lol have you read the comments? It doesn't have to be everyone's cup of tea but theres no need to degrade it and say its park cricket standard.

    • +6

No-one’s disparaging or discouraging female sports per se. The core issue is - is it entertainment worth paying for? Despite being 50% female, the market has spoken.

      • +3

The issue is - is it entertainment worth paying for?

This is literally free to watch. Sure, it doesn't have the same draw as men's cricket, but nobody is being forced to watch it.

Do the same people that have complained in this thread go to every SUBS deal posted and say "They'd have to pay me to watch this!"? No.

        • +3

This is literally free to watch.

FTA is not “free” - it’s just different form of payment - you wouldn’t watch ads if entertainment wasn’t worthwhile.

          • +2

            @AlexF:

            FTA is not “free”

But this is free to stream on Kayo, which is generally ad-free… What exactly is your point?

            • @SnowDragon: Kayo isn't ad-free.

              • +1

@infinite: Some things you watch are though. NRL, AFL and Ashes have been - 2022 Women's World Cup may be as well.

                What exactly is YOUR point?

                • @SnowDragon: That it's not ad-free.

I mean, I know your doing mental gymnastics in here of an Olympic level to try and convince people womens cricket is in any capacity something even approaching a commercially viable product.

But yeah, Kayo isn't ad-free. That's just a hard fact.
