with official LOS 18 support this is a good phone.

pity that battery is bit a disappointment.

Purchased of Asus Zenfone 4 years ago, will not buy Asus anymore; they won't update the UI only used 1.5yr

  • Anyone know how this compares to Pixel 5 in terms of battery life / longetivity? Was planning on grabbing one 2nd hand for $500 but this deal has me second guessing if I should just stretch the budget and get a new phone instead.

    • +2

Longevity and battery wise the pixel is much better. Has a much less power hungry SOC, and pixel 5 should also get android 14.

  • +4

google up zenfone 8 ramdump issues, so many phones bricking themselves.

    • Thanks for the heads up. I was originally very interested in the Zenfone given it's one of the very few compact phones available these days, but given the ramdump issues people have reported, I think I might have to go back to the drawing board :(

  • How does this compare with the Motorola edge 20 which is also on sale. Just want a phone with a great camera that's not too pricey

    • +1

The Edge 20 is a completely different categroy phone. Its a mid-range phone at best with a Snapdragon 778, similar to Pixel 5 performance.
Zenfone 8 is on a whole different level at higher mid range category

      • I'm coming from a OnePlus 6 so either will probably be an upgrade. My only complaint with my current phone is the camera. That's my only real concern at the moment

  • 8gb ram or 6gb?

    • +1

      It’s 8GB, I just received mine.

      • Which provider are you with. Can you confirm VoLTE and VoWifi (Wifi Calling) works with all of the latest updates including the Android 12 update ?
Anyone got a better price negotating with JB folks in store or the 13 52 44 no, looks like the sales are real slow on this one. At $500 (with JB discount and discounted gift cards) would be a no brainer even with the limitations. The carrier support (VoLTE, Wifi Calling, 5G Bands, 5G Standalone) seem to be really not upto the mark with Asus phones.

        • Not till tonight. I don’t have a sim in it at the moment. Will be Voda though. I’ll update.

I think at $599 it’s already heavily discounted, I doubt they will move more.

          • @Mungulz: Vodafone does support VoLTE out of the box on this phone, might just need to see if Wifi calling works or not out of the box. There are some shortcodes listed on whirlpool but it doesnt stick after a reboot.

Also good thing is this one does support 5G Standalone (SA) which Vodafone have already turned on for the S21 series !

      • Could you check whether the phone support dual SIMs?

Just checked the JB page, it says dual SIMs.

  • Was very interested in this phone as a secondary, but may just go for the Pixel 4a instead since it's not my daily driver which is an iphone 13 mini. I love small phones!

Are you getting the P4a 2nd hand? Refurb? I dont think anyone has stock left, regret not buying last year!

      • +1

Oh, nobody is selling it anymore? Darn…

        • Google store still has it listed but it's been Out of Stock for a while

        • I think there's a few grey imports (4a 5g) floating around, but they are >$700 generally

          • @nismo: Ah…maybe i'll wait and see if they sell them in Japan.
            Thanks!

That's a lot of phone for the price. What I will say though is that the screen scratches super easily. I've only had it for 3 months and it has more scratches than any of the phones I've had previously for 2+ years.

  • Good price. but 128gb… this is gonna fill up so fast

  • +1

Anyone know how long this phone will receive software updates?
Tossing up this phone or a iphone 13 mini with at least 4+ years of updates

    • I give this phone a year maybe 2 max. Just like most android phones. A little longer is lineage os gets released for it.

      • when Iphone do a release its for all their phones at the same time …. android it's hard to know if at the start or end of a release cycle ….. they always upgrade the latest phones for more sales and after 2 years they write the updates when the developers aren't busy anymore.

doubt every android phone less than 2 years old has android 12 yet ….. but I reckon every iphone less than 4 years old has access to the latest version of IOS …..

Android tried to fix it with Android One, but even that is loosing adopters.

What grind my gears with iphone is if i want to do a file transfer via bluetooth i cant. Drag and drop a file in it. Just adds too many extra steps.

Widgets on the screen. Forget about that also.

Its just those restrictive little things.

I used to use an iphone till having to jailbreak it just got tedious just to enable things that many android users have been enjoying.

    • +1

      ip 13 mini.

wirh android its hard to guess and with developmental Roms, more time to tinkering.

      • +1

used to tinker alot, these days can't be bothered anymore and just want something that works and is reliable for years to come.

        • +1

iPhone 13 Mini then. Better warranty with Apple in general (though I am not a big fan of their replacement, refurbished units; in my case, the replacement unit had the latest iOS, making it super slow, it used to be an issue with old Apple devices. My mate's replacement phone expanded (battery kinda exploded) close to 1 year, but Apple replaced it with another replacement).

OS update is a bigger issue for iOS devices, with a lot of apps simply require later or relatively new iOS versions.

    • +1

They promised 2 years of software updates so It's final update will be android 13 sometime next year. No clue about security updates but I wouldn't hold my breath. The only good OEM's on the Android side are Samsung (3/4 years of software/security updates), Google (3/5 years of software/security updates) and Oppo flagships at 3 years.

Keep in mind that the iPhone is quite a bit smaller and much more expensive though.

  • That's a great price, I'm almost sad I got a s20 FE, can't really justify upgrading to this can I?

  • Brilliant deal for one of the few compact Android flagships. However, if you have a half decent phone, you may want to wait for the s22 series and whatever preorder/trade in offers they may have. The s22 is going to end up being around the same size as well.

  • When does this end?

    • Post says end of Jan.

  • Would get if i didnt already have the pixel 5

  • Yes but does it come with a $100 Refurbished Vita?

    • +1

Where are you getting a $100 Refurbished Vita?!!

      • +1

Haha it's an old meme. If you see the OP; Webtherapist's past deals, way way way back they posted about a Refurbished Vita from Sony for 100. Everyone knew it was too good to be true but we all went at it anyway. Over the next couple of days we just sat tight talking about weather it was going to happen or not in the thread.. Then the emails of price error etc started to come. Was a great community event, one of the biggest "This is gonna be a waste of time because its too good to be true" deals on ozbargain. Whenever Webtherapist posts a deal, I try to sneak in a Refurbished Vita reference. I think they hate it :D

    Bought one yesterday, thank you.

This phone surprised me, the weight is just right, the small size is great, the processing speed is fast and the screen is beautiful!

    Wonderful buy, love it

    • Does it support VoLTE & VoWiFi?

      • -1

not sure sorry, it is not an important feature for me, for I do not make much calls.

  • +1

    Got one as well, cheers

  • Could I use 6x$100 home gift cards to purchase this online from JB Hi-Fi? Or only in store if I want to use multiple cards to purchase it? TIA

    • Someone can confirm, but I'm not sure you'd be able to use these online unless JB allows you to do split payments at checkout.

You could probably check yourself by going through the checkout process without finalising/completing the order.

Also might depend on which 'Home' card you have - if they're the Ultimate ones then I believe some older ones can't be used online. There should be details on the card saying where you can and can't use them

  • I missed this by 1 day. if anyone bought this can u pls send invoice so I can pricematch. Any help is appriciated thanks

  • Hi guys,

Does anyone know a good screen repair agent as my joy of using this remarkable device was short lived when I dropped it and now sport a cracked screen?

    Many thanks in advance.
