nm counts are all advertising anyway, the 5nm on this performs worse than the 7nm on the Snapdragon 865/865+ in 2020 phones.

    • +3

Do you have a source for this? I'm curious, as everything I've seen seems to show the SD888 being faster.

      https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-qualcomm_snapdrago…

      • +7

It's faster but sd888 and now snapdragon 8 gen 1 has throttling and heating issues, so it ends up performing at the level of a sd870 etc. Has been documented in lots of YouTube reviews for sd888 phones.

        • -2

the sd888 only seems to throttle on Oneplus 9 due to design. other phones seem to have no issues.

          • +3

@mrvaluepack: Nope even phones like Realme GT have had throttling issues they've shown it in Gsmarena

        • +2

Not all SD888 phones throttle to below a throttled 870. (Most do, though. Like the Chinese mainstream budget phones Oneplus 9 and Realme GT)
The Zenfone 8's throttling is not too bad, for example.

They're somewhat right about node size being just advertising at this point. Although in the guise of an actual measurement, it's been a long time since it actually corresponds in a meaningful way to transistor dimensions.

The big companies just agree (or not, in the case of intel) to match up their progress increasing transistor density with a decrease in the magical node number.

        • It's been an arbitary number chosen for marketing reasons for a long time.

There's not even been a correlation between performance and lower numbers in many cases eg AMD vs Intel

    • +2

nm is push is for 2 purposes, it allows smaller chips so that manufactures get more chips per wafer, the other is heat, thin junctions generate less heat BUT if you increase speed, then heat also increases …..changing state of a gate generates heat ….. the more often you do it the hotter it gets.
there’s more to making a good phone than the conductor width in the SOC … good software also helps, screen technology and combinations to extend battery life.

i’ve never looked at the nm of the SOC when buying a phone.

  • +6

Good specs, just missing the wireless charging

  • VoLTE or VoWiFi support?

      • +1

It's been fixed in an update, but supposedly it's finicky

    • Yes for voda.

Still need to put in a dial code for telstra / optus.
But apparently been added fully on the ROG 5 phone (see whirlpool), so the guessing is its work in progress coming soon.

      • Hi can you provide the dail code or link to activate please… And is it possible on realme x2 pro
I am struggling to activate volte on Telstra's network for some time and not able to find any solution.

  • +14

Finally, a portable smartphone that can be used with just one hand.

    • The S22 looks to be the same - the size of the S10e.

      • Uhh, the S22 isn't even released yet…

        • +1

Yeah I'm aware, sorry should've made that clear.

The (very credible!) leaks tell us that.

    • +3

Remember 2011 and the Samsung Galaxy Note with it's ludicrous 5.3" screen?

      • +1

Such a huge size for a phone will never catch on. Oh wait.

      • +1

I get the point and I agree but at the same time, the physical dimensions haven't changed too much. In fact, the og Note was about half an inch wider than the Zenfone 8, albeit a tad shorter. That impacts usability quite a bit.

    • +1

yep , people used to argue about the size of std Iphone ….. it was designed that you could reach any part of the screen with your thumb including texting …… screen is too small for me but different people have different needs , and standing in the train small screens are great vs people standing, using 2 hands and having to grab onto people if train wobbles …….

I got this phone just before Christmas and am very happy with it. I wanted a phone that easily fitted in my pockets, had decent specs and camera, and most importantly for me had a headphone jack. This was pretty much the only option that fit my criteria and so far nothing really disappoints.

    • +1

Exactly my situation, and 100% this has been my experience too. Only criticism is the fingerprint scanner is a bit hit and miss, especially with a screen protector.

      • I agree about the fingerprint scanner, it is hit and miss.

    • How has the battery life been? Its the only drawback I can see with this phone.

      • +1

I wouldn't say I'm a heavy user but it nearly always gets me through a full day using the dynamic power mode. Can easily get a day+ if you use a power saving on.

  • +30

It comes with a charger too, how dare they, won't someone please think of the shareholders environment.

    • +2

I propose to remove charging cable and the sim removal pin too! Should just ship the phone in a paper bag.

On a serious note though, anyone with issue not having a charger being included? So far okay on my end as things have moved to usb c. In fact, my laptop usb c charger charges most things at home as well a few slow ones for overnight charging.

      • +11

I think what makes people really angry is they claim it is for the environment, don't reduce the price, and then sell an accessory for $50.

I can never have enough chargers as every few years there is a higher performance specification.

        • +1

I hand me down my phone to relatives. So the charger comes with it. So if my next phone don't come with a charger it would suck.

          • +2

@xoom: They should offer a 50$ voucher in the box for people to choose a charger, or something else.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: I would go for that. But thats not really "for the environment" would it.

Yeah that "for the environment" is bs. The only environtment its improving is the manufacturer when they rake in profits for selling you less products for more money.

            • @[Deactivated]: Samsung is doing that with a code for the S21 FE, only thing is their cheapest fast charger has been out of stock most of the time lol.

        • +1

I can never have enough chargers as every few years there is a higher performance specification.

I just don't understand this, because the best way to ensure longevity is to slow charge via a USB port on one of your devices overnight.

          • +1

@Techie4066: Whatever reason it may be… Profit… Environment… Some people needs the charger… And the same time, many wont… So… Matter of fact… It will reduce waste overall. Similar argument when car manufacturers removed cigarette lighter from cars.

or a better way is the ability to redeem a charger at no cost for those that need it.

            • @[Deactivated]: Yes I agree with removing chargers but the prices should've come down permanently to match.

            • @[Deactivated]:

or a better way is the ability to redeem a charger at no cost for those that need it.

That would indeed be a better way but many did not do it. They simply charged the same as they would have had the charger been included.

Now i would have bought in to their 'its for the environment' if they included a coupon to redeem a charger for free. Or discounted the phone because it did not include a charger.

          • +3

@Techie4066: Things change. As batteries get larger, slow 5V only chargers are not really feasible. Also, the "fast" chargers don't actually charge them at high voltage / high current completely. If you really read carefully, they all claiming n number of minutes up to 50% charged. You cannot fast charge a battery when it is 90%, you need to slow the charging otherwise it will explode.

Laptop chargers have been using adaptive charging for years.

            • @netsurfer: Yeah I'm aware of charge throttling. With all that heat it really does make you wonder what it's doing to a critical hard to replace component.
Slow charging only seems to be a viable option for those that can get a full day out of one charge. And even then, reports of what impact different charging rates have are still mixed.
As for me I just leave it plugged into my smart clock's 5V USB port overnight. It does the job, and I know it's only anecdotal, but I've found slow charging gives better battery life.

              • +1

@Techie4066: ASUS is very considerate in the battery options can choose 10W-18W-30W charging options

                • @MarsGO: Good to know, thank you. The ramdump errors and rather mediocre software support have unfortunately turned me off Asus. Samsung seems to have more of a polished experience, and that includes their own extended software experience and better camera setups.

          • +1

                      @Zorlin: Try this

Beyond you easily being able to find a range of sources (without questioning the veracity of one that I'd provide), why would I explain it to you as a consumer and not an expert or engineer? I assume you're the same so it's not hard to see and assess for yourself since you seem to question it.

I've even tried fast and slow charging on one phone and found that the battery lasts longer through the day after slow charging. Who would've thought.

I'm not even that skeptical, I can see why slow charging could make sense, but maybe a sentence or two about why would have helped.

That's called life mate! People make well-established arguments every day with it being questioned by what seems half of humanity! We'd be around all day if people had to think ahead and worry/act upon what people will question next. We live in the information era, it's way easier to find knowledge yourself.

          • +1

@Techie4066: Slow charging up to only 63% is even better

  • Since when is 5.9" 'compact'?

    • +5

Since nearly all higher specced phones for the last 3+ years seem to be more than 6.2 inches. Really annoying!

    • +3

Since they moved from 16:9 I think, diameter isn’t true screen size but I guess cm2 dosnt read as sexy

    • +2

Since the screens started becoming bezel-less, and as stated above the aspect ratios became more elongated.

    • You're looking at the wrong stat. Look at the width - that's what matters.

  • this doesn't have VoLTE or VoWiFi support, had to return my phone due to this

    • +1

      new update fixed it

      • When you say "fixed it" are you talking about the code:
        asterisk#asterisk#3642623344#asterisk#asterisk

        • If that's the trick you are referring to, that's for Zenfone 8 flip. There is another trick for Zenfone 8, but that involves rooting the phone.

          • @netsurfer: It works on my non-flip.
I have the international 16GB/256GB version

            • @pumpkinspice: International version, is that the EU version?

              • @netsurfer: Not from EU or UK, but its charger is suited to a UK powerpoint so I'd guess HK.
I bought it from a local seller on ebay, they didn't say what country it's sourced from.

  • +4

Great spec for a smaller sized phone.
But 128GB with no external memory, no thanks.

    • +2

      Agree. Not quite zen.

  • I hear battery life sucks on this?

    • +2

I've had the phone for a few months now and I can confirm that the battery sucks. Very fast charging obviously helps but I do get mild anxiety at around lunch time each day when I look at the dwindling battery icon.

      • Snapdragon 888 seems to bring down every phone in this way :(
Just look at how good the SD865 in the S20 FE 5G performed, 110 hours in the GSMArena endurance test. A mile ahead.

Exynos 2100 is even worse but it's catching up in performance by switching to the same architecture (just throttles a lot due to the heat of both chips)

  • +4

3.5mm headphone jack for premium sound quality - - Big plus!

    • +1

No one at the gym even connects headphones with a wire anymore

      • +9

And thats the thing. Your phone can have a headphone jack and you dont have to use it.

Its called having a choice. Never found a smartphone that had a headphone jack but didnt have bluetooth.

I mean the "we dont have space to put a headphone jack" may fly when it comes to phones but it certainly does not when it comes to tablets.

As the mexican taco ad says. Why not both?!

        Why cant we have both?

  • +6

no SD card expansion, so sad.

    • +7

Yeah. Thats a big downside in my books.

Interested in this phone. While searching for reviews for this phone, I came across a couple of sources talking about the phone bricks itself without rooting of any sort. Anyone know more about it?

      • +7

Buying from JB seems pretty safe though. Local warranty. If it was grey import that would scare me away.

        • +1

Comments in Zentalk mostly saying it affected batches mfg in April. Would be interested to know what mfg dates JB is selling (that doesn't mean though that later dates are free from that issue.)

          • @mangdonald: Would it be possible to get some more info on this? Do you have the links to some of those comments by any chance? Thanks…

            • @netsurfer: Is the batch number on the box? can just return it if its old / check in store before buying

              • +1

@cycleri3: Was thinking about the same, but unless we know batches which are free of those reported issues, is it safe to just go for newer batches? Also, reading the comments, there is one trend I noticed, most people who had issues with their phones were unhappy about JB's after sale service (basically forcing you to go down the warranty / repair route, instead of new replacement / refund.

                • @netsurfer: I will give it a skip. Only 1 yr warranty too vs other phones offering 2 yrs.

I've had this phone since around when it came out here (June ish), though I got the 256gb version. Very happy with it - I hated how every company has been going for bigger and bigger phones, so was super excited by it when they announced it.

They haven't skipped on the quality of parts, but do have to make some sacrifices to make it this small (no wireless charging, and a smaller battery than other companies have on their phones), but it's never been an issue for me. There's been a couple of days I knew I'd be using my phone more than usual and took my charger into the office with me. Within half an hour with the included fast charger and it's over half way charged, which is great. Of course YMMV - I don't do heavy gaming sessions using my phone for example.

Coming from a Mi 6, the camera is amazing, screen is nice (120Hz is so smooth), and the phone feels great. Having the ability to plug my phone in at night and then plug in headphones is absolutely amazing and I wish other companies did it again. Haven't had any phone specific issues, though some Android 11 issues (I really hate Android 11's "bubbles" thing they have for chats).

Overall, very happy with it, and very happy with the fact that Asus made a premium smart phone that's small in size (it's barely bigger than my old Mi 6) with great specs, and didn't skimp on things like a headphone jack.

    • +3

This is a perfect comparison, I had a MI6 and was happy enough with it.

Went from MI6 to A40 to now Zen8. I do not want large and chunky phones. If I want something big, I can use a tablet.

Pulled the trigger and got this. Thanks.

      • welcome :)

      • +3

No worries! One thing I really hate about reviews was how it assumed everyone had a current flagship phone already and was looking to change to a different phone.

They're like "so this phone we're reviewing doesn't have as good of a camera as the latest Apple or Samsung phone, but this phone's screen is 0.03" taller. Honestly even with the bigger screen size, the fact that you can't see individual hairs on a photo subject from 5km away is pretty disappointing, so we don't recommend this phone for its camera"

Meanwhile I'm sitting there with a 4 year old phone with an "average at best" camera from back in the day and trying to figure out how it compares to new gen stuff!

        • Thanks for the insight about how uninformative modern reviews are.
Never thought about it that way.
Indeed, the way reviews talk about rather irrelevant stuff is how I ended up with a Xiaomi LOL, worst mistake of my life

          • +1

@thlunasa: Yeah, I found it super annoying when reviewers would talk about how the phone they're reviewing has a camera better than this other phone. So then you have to go to a review of that phone and see what that's better/equivalent to, and keep doing that until you're finally at a phone you know/have, but even then that usually doesn't work. All these reviewers have access to their reviews from the past 5 years - why not show photo/video comparisons of the phone plus a selection of older phones so people know what they're upgrading to?
