  • Will this go cheaper than $499 in the near future?

  • Will this be a noticeable upgrade from a 3700x?

It should be. The IPC upgrade is certainly noticeable IMO but then again depends on what you do.
Personally, I edit videos and thus render a lot so I could notice the difference, but in gaming, it should still be noticeable provided you've got a decent GPU (not sure on exact numbers but fairly sure it's a good upgrade)

Cheers mate. I just do some gaming. This is tempting but I am trying to really justify it. Perhaps I need to wait until the 2nd half of this year when Zen4 comes out.

For gaming your CPU is holding back frames at 1080 144+ but for higher res your gpu is the limitation.

          • @beeze: I have a RTX 3070 btw.

            • +1

@axlfan: still holds true, if you are gaming at higher res you probably will see very little to no improvement in most games. a few of the more CPU intensive ones (i.e. ones with shit developers) will benefit but on the whole you will probably see very little gaming difference. definitely not worth the upgrade purely for gaming.

I'm not sure it'll be noticeable. Sure, in benchmarks you'll probably see a 10-20% improvement, but without the framerate counter up, will you actually notice? I suspect not.

FWIW, here's a video putting them side-by-side with a 3070 Ti: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efBl-0AeMCk. If your graphics card is lower end than that you can expect the performance difference to be even less noticeable.

I'm in the same boat but happy with the 3700x. Better to save money imo as prices eventually come down. For gaming I can live with 3700x.

nah, im on a 4790 and even this prehistoric beast can handle most modern games quite well (but there are games it cant run well now so it is time for me to upgrade)

  • 1-2 months shipping. That's a long time to hope for no better deal or price drop. Especially given there are already deals for the 12600K for ~$460.

  • my amd 6300FX is still going strong!!!

    • I have one of those in my old pc…… what do you run on it?

      • wrc 10, assetto corsa competitzione, forza 5, all smooth as silk.

        • +1

That's great you got so much life from it! Sadly my fx6300 was lagging behind in modern titles and 3700x was a huge upgrade for me.

          • @Handymancan: I might overclock it. People always upgrade but see little difference. Plus you need to buy a new motherboard also. Gets expensive. The older chips can still cope just fine.

  • I put my 5800x into Eco mode in bios.

Idle in the 30s, under load around 50-70.

  • Right when I'm gifted with a 3700X.

  • $469.80 delivered for eBay plus
