    Works! Thanks OP

  • @OP, Thank you Very Much
Can anyone Please suggest a Free VPN to enable me to do this?

  • Is this deal like that Kaspersky thing from a year ago? Like one public key but it wasn't intended for mass distribution??

I might let other OzBargainers give their 2c before I decide.

    • -1

      Its free, who cares ;)

      • Wish I had that same mentality, but I'm still uncertain. :(

If I remember correctly the Kaspersky deal was also free, but as you can check the post it came with some issues (one being it wasn't meant for mass distribution).

        • -3

Meh, its free and tbh im using it on a system that is not running any personal stuff, so intel me away lol

    Great find. Worked well. Cheers

  • worked like a charm

  • Thanks OP, got 1096 days before renewal.

  • Thanks OP !

Is this AV actually any good? seems to get mediocre reviews from what I have read so far. Quite interested as my ESET Internet Security subscription has ended and there aren't any $3 keys from HT available at the moment, but switching AV systems can be a bit risky so I don't want to bother unless it's worth it…

      • Legend, thanks! Although I just pulled the trigger on this F-Secure deal and installed it on my work laptop, so might as well run that on my home PC now too.

      • I had ESET and found it to slow my PC and after uninstalling, left a few annoying things on their like an Outlook add-on error that i had to drill down into the registry to get rid of, cant remember the other few issues, but was damn annoying.

        • all antivirus slows down PC but ESET slows down the least

          • @PeeDee: I beg to differ, Kaspersky is super fast tbh, compared to ESET

      • Thanks, just got 3Y 4 devices for Pro version, $20.

      • Very good price, but cant see paypal and not comfortable putting card details.

      • Did anyone end up getting the keys after placing order on this site?? I still havent had a response.

It's F… Secure. Must be good.

      • It's AV as well… so F and Secure, feel free to come……….by

I think the guy in charge has a bit of a clue about the subject:
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikko_Hypp%C3%B6nen

    • Yes, people might want to take note that AV has become a larger and larger liability lately.

It's being used as an method to attack devices for example.

    • Give kaspersky a shot. Check out YouTube pcsecurity channel. Kaspersky beats the 0day threats even when the active protection modules are inactive.

  • How does this compare to Malwarebytes?

    • +4

That's not an antivirus. Different product that is designed to find malware on your system. Usually used in conjunction with antivirus. But if you are not visiting questionable sites the windows protection is enough. But if you live adventurously then extra protection of all kinds is recommended. πŸ˜‹

    • +6

I disagree, the best things in life are free - love, friendship and hugs.

      • +2

I'm not sure how often you get love, friends and even hugs these days without a decent job, a career and some money in your account.

        • I hug my local tramp every time I see him outside the pokies.

        • Someone who doesn't like the truth negged you.

      • Just worked for me

      • Make sure you go to the "Subscription" page and under "Manger your subscriptions" select "Enter subscription code" and click button "Enter subscription code". Trying to apply discount code on the same page will bring up "Discount code is invalid".

    • Thanks. Worked just now.

  • Thanks OP

  • Ah, got excited as I thought it might be their password manager too. If anyone has a good deal for one I’m all ears!

    Good deal otherwise, OP.

      Nothing wrong with KeePass

    • Agree with alidli - nothing wrong with Keepass.
However, while Keepass is fine for me…..for my family it'd be too hard and they won't do it.

Thus, if you want an "enterprise" grade one, 1password has a US $20 discount on at the moment. https://blog.1password.com/keep-your-heart-safe-with-1passwo…
I pay $65/year for the entire family to use 1password, so I know they aren't re-using the same passwords. $65/year may sound a lot for some folks, but for 4 ppl that's a pretty decent deal…..a couple of coffee's each. It gets used many times daily. No brainer.

      • I'm curious, what about keepass is considered too hard by your average user?

        • <disclaimer> I haven't used Keepass for a few years now, so things may have improved.

But it doesn't (or didn't) have proper integration into phones, Mac's, etc.
No app. integration and autofill never existed/worked even in the browser - things that take the hassle out of constantly entering passwords into sites and app's.

I used Lastpass for a few years also, and 1password and Lastpass are just much easier to use overall for the average user.
Them also having integration into other products like Watchtower and HIBP to ensure your password or the site has not been compromised is also a win for average punters.

Lastpass lost me when they sold out to LogMeIn - although they recently announced they are being spun off again. <shrug>.

          • @TheMoose: Yeah okay. I think most of those complaints are handled either by plugins (browser autofill etc) and community ports like keepassxc, but I can see why other solutions are more simple and work "out of the box". Also doesn't help that the keepass interface hasn't really changed in decades.

Though I haven't tried it myself, these days I usually recommend Bitwarden to friends/family, as it seems to be more of a complete product in the vein of commercial offerings like 1password while still being free (for personal use at least) and open source. Could be worth a look to potentially save the 1password cost, small as it is.

            • @snep: A mate looked into BW last year but it was missing 1 or 2 keys things we both wanted/needed; can't recall what they all were though except that the families option/shared vaults (which I use extensively) is not free - US$40/yr - so almost the same cost as 1password (actually more, if you use the discount link I posted earlier).
Again, it will improve over time and may have those other things soon.

The other potential issue with BW is that although it's open source, meaning the code can be audited - that doesn't mean that it is - but it can also be checked for flaws/vulnerabilies by bad actors and then exploited.
We all saw last year the sh!tstorm that happened with openssl being maintained by only 2 ppl, but used by hundreds of thousands of applications/organisations. There were some severe code deficiencies for many years simply because no-one looked/audited.
Those 2 guys were doing their best (and an awesome job too) in their spare time, but vulnerbilities crept in nonetheless.

A commercial product doesn't guarantee there won't be similar issues but at least they are on the hook and they pay their programmers so it's expected that they will have some form of auditing done, and the code can't be inspected by people you don't want looking.
Possibly an important distinction for something that holds ALL your passwords, credit-cards, etc.

              • @TheMoose: Yeah if the free version of Bitwarden doesn't meet your needs that's fair enough.

It's an interesting and unresolved point regarding open source security.

Ultimately an actor, good or bad, is still perfectly able to find and exploit weaknesses in closed source software via various methods (fuzzing, reverse engineering binaries, etc). Open sourcing makes this process somewhat easier for both black and white hats. Whether that is a benefit or a detriment seems to depend on who you ask…

You can take examples from either side: there are plenty of times "obvious flaws" have been found in both open and closed-source software, sometimes quietly disclosed and fixed, other times exploited in the wild.

I think ultimately the security practices are more important than the means of distribution: a program that's been designed with security in mind from the start, with a robust code review and auditing system applied throughout, and proper channels for disclosures/bug bounties is the best we can hope for. Most reputable projects, open source or closed, aim for this.

I'm not convinced that commercial closed-source software is likely to have better security practices simply because they're a commercial operation. Lazy devs and poor practice can happen anywhere, whether you're being paid or not.

Openssl was a particularly egregious example, had been criticised for years before heartbleed for the poor quality code — and the sheer amount of it, >300k lines 0.0 — and has since been comprehensively refactored. Obviously it would have been nice if that happened sooner… but I think (hope?) lessons were learned.

I struggled to find much relevant empirical research, but this paper found no significant difference in the duration/severity of unpatched vulnerabilities across a small selection of widely used open vs closed software.

                • @snep: Agreed - neither open/closed is better by default.

The openssl example only adds weight to what I'm saying - if people were pointing out issues for such a long time and nothing was done about them for such a critical security component baked into so many products…..why not? Skilled people noticed, and no-one did anything.
That makes one sometimes wonder about the 'openness' of open source. As you say - hopefully lessons have been learned.

  • I am using Windscribe and still getting:

This campaign is not available in your country. Worked with the 3 month code but not the 3 years.

    • I got that on Nord VPN. i reconnected got a new IP and gave me the offer. The site must be manually blocking VPN IP's it knows about

      • Ivacy is not working and Windscribe too

    • Make sure that you're using a UK location in Windscribe!

Used windscribe and it worked. Set to UK Manchester United.

    • Same here, it keeps saying the following message:
"Registration or use of this code is not valid in your country or from this internet connection. Please register using the broadband or mobile connection from the provider of your F-Secure service or if you purchased from retail then in the country of purchase. If you are using Apple Private Relay, please disable this feature and try again."

      • Are you using a UK portal on a VPN? You may need to clear cookies to be sure…

I used free version of Winscribe. Tried both Crumpets and Custard locations . Both the same.
Tried seed4 VPN got the same error
Even tried with incognito browser …

  • Is this better/similar to BitDefender? In terms of quality and not much of a resource hogger?

  • Thnx will use this when my bitdefender account expires in a few months

  • When I used F-Secure last time I could not connect to Skype any longer. Back to Bit Defender all working ok now.

  • Sign up first, ask later. Did that. Now I need to find a solid justification for using this. Anyway, thanks OP!

Tried the free version of Windscribe and getting:

"This campaign is not available in your country." - worked with the 3 month code but not the 3 years code

Anyone know of any other Free VPN (that have UK locations) that work with the 3 year code ?

    • I used the free version too. Have you set your exit node to somewhere in the UK?

      • Yes, in the free version I have tried both UK proxies and both gave the same error

"This campaign is not available in your country."

Which of the Free UK proxy server did you use that worked ?
