[WA] Beef Scotch Fillet $29.99 - $31.99 Per kg @ Supa IGA

380

Went to the Manning farmers market cos I heard good things about it.
Went to the nearby shopping centre to check out the Coles there (and it was bare).
There's a Supa IGA nearby which has a butcher section, and saw this scotch fillet which I think it's a good deal.
Woolies is selling it from $45 to $60 per kilo and that's if you can find stock!

There's a bit of inconsistency with the prices as seen in the picture. Some packs were marked as $29.99/kg whereas others were marked as $31.99/kg

"There's a bit of inconsistency with the prices as seen in the picture."
    $29.99 = budget
    $31.99 = prime

    • +1

well yes i saw that, but is it worth paying the extra $2?
The "budget" label cut looks like it has more marbling for me.

      • +1

Prime seems to hold the shape of a gourmet scotch fillet cut more than budget. The budget cut looks more like a casserole shape.

But either way, I'd personally choose budget option. If you're cooking for yourself there's no need for a nicer looking cut

      • +1

I would say the budget cuts are off the ends of the fillet and prime is the middle

      • I could be wrong, but pretty sure it has more to do with it than just appearance, could also be the age (and therefore deliciousness) of the cow the meat came from.

Can't find an article that breaks all the grades down, but this one talks about "budget" and "economy" labels

Waterford Plaza is the only place I have ever had a parking fine.
Buy your meat quickly and look out.

    • +3

      Parking is free though?

Be careful of the time limits - they are sticklers.
Have never been back since that event. $65.
Mind you, that was in 2015, hopefully they have changed.

  • Can’t go past a bit of scotch on the Bbq, budget or prime!

    • I'm a rump man myself. Just love the taste on the BBQ

  • Is this scotch fillet or rib eye?

    • +2

      The title says scotch fillet

      • +1

I think it's the same thing depending on what state you live in.

    • +1

Same same, just one has the bone attached generally

    • Scotch fillet is a boneless rib eye steak

    • -1

      ribeye is boneless

tomahawk steak would be the ribeye with a bone.

T-bone has the bone and has a ribeye on one side and a fillet on the other.

      • +1

You mean porterhouse and fillet on other side of tbone

        • -1

no, porterhouse is a bigger t bone. i think the difference is one of them is cut from the front and one from the back. i think properhouse is from the back, i can't remember.

I can't tell which part is the troll: the upvote or the comment lol

    • Cheaper maybe, but not healthier.
Have you seen the amount of processing of "foods" that are vegan.

      • Do you know that there are also unprocessed vegan foods?

        • Lettuce.

    • -2

Why people down vote. I am promoting vegan diet. It is better for the world. Less killing.

      • Yet you upvote this post on beef scotch fillet? Lol.

      • "less killing"?

I don't know about that, you got killed right there. :D

    • +2

      Yes, the cow is vegan

  • +1

I haven't tried to buy in the last few weeks but I like the Scotch fillet from Aldi. From memory normal price is around $25/kg as I refuse to pay much more for meat. Has always tasted good to me.

  • @mmd How were the Manning markets? Worth a visit?

    • +1

      Yes worth it!

  • Local butchers $30 kilo

  • +1

costco angus porterhouse is around same price. Very good

  • +3

I like more and more people to be vegan then beef will cheaper than vegs

    • You'll be disappointed, there'll be hardly any veg (and grass) left for the cow so the cost of raising one will be prohibitively expensive (probably more than raising you kid. A plant based one would then be the acceptable alternative.

      • hmm feed plants to cows so we can have steaks vs try and turn vegetables into something that tastes like steak, mock meat ….. which is cheaper and more green house friendly … feed cows grass and get steaks or try and trun vegetables i to something that tastes like steak ……

        • You can't fake meat like that. Unless you want to have anaemic children

  • Should have grabbed some Gingin Beef from the farmers market. More expensive than this but absolutely the best dry aged beef I've ever had!

    • Thanks for the tip, was there for the first time today and saw that stall. Will pick some up next time. We rarely eat steak, so don't mind paying more for quality when we do.

  • my local IGA doesn’t honour a lot of the the specials ….. they charge whatever they like and when i show them the the catalogue it’s pfff …. connoisseur ice cream they kept on charging $11 when catalogue was 1/2 price ….

    • Is your IGA a Supa IGA though?

      • ahhh , it’s one of the dingey ones …. they have the items that are often in the catalogue , are they operated differently ?
i’ve been to some IGA and they are like a small coles or woolies, some are like ….. a store for desperate locals who need a few ktems and a trip to coles or woolies is too much hassle ….will check next time if it’s iga or super iga.

        • My local is IGA Xpress, mega expensive, I avoid it like the plague.

  • Aldi $25.99 a kg.
