Can we get this applied to existing accounts?

  • +2

Great question and Yes! We have updated the form with a checkbox for Current and New Members.

    • Great, thanks! Worked fine

Since booking.com and Expedia price fix the market, how are you able to offer better prices?

    • +1

Booking[dot]com and Expedia are whats called Retail Online Travel Agents (OTAs), Club 1 Hotels is considered a Members-Only Wholesale Travel Agency. (It's like Costco but for the travel industry)

      • Are you saying you can offer a lower advertised rate then booking.com/ Expedia which goes against their rules due to the fact you're considered a wholesale travel agency?

        • +2

Agree with you….I think is is more spin then substance…. Also not legal in AU as it is not all inclusive pricing.

        • +1

It can't go against their rules in Australia, take a look at the ACCC website about this exact issue which used to exist. It's illegal for them to make such terms.
It's why you can now get a price on say Expedia then call that hotel to see if they can do a better price directly, which they often do from my experience.
That's how a competitive and fair market works.

    • +14

Remember these prices are in USD too.
I tried Feb 17-18 in Brisbane and picked the first one on the list, Hilton Brisbane. It was listed at US$153.67 but at checkout it adds US$23.05 taxes. Total is US$176.72.
      That's AU$248.63 assuming 0% fees using MasterCard

SnapTravel has the same hotel for $241
      FindHotel has it for $247

I have been advised by our team, that we will be accepting cryto payments by March 1st, 2022. Which should remove any of the AUS/USD exchange issues.

  • +1

are the price showed as USD? Will the international conversion fee be charged if I paid in AUD? Thx

    • +1

Hi xiaozaocha, all the rates are currently shown and billed in USD

      • I'll pass in that case as most banks in Australia charge international transaction fees.
Also pricing in Australia must be shown including GST, legally, not just at checkout.

        • Except you're booking through a US website.

        • +2

the transaction fees and tax kill this deal actually. I compared my proposed Aug holiday price and booked from agoda (12% cashback) eventually.

    • Simple answer is YES if your card charges a international conversion fee.

  • +10

so I just trialled it for a booking - sofitel darling harbour in july for a weekend - shows as $410 USD (tax is no included in price so add on $60) for 2 nights totalling $670 aud. $711 on bookings.com and all the other majors. so modest saving of about $40, part of it will be eaten up by transaction fees

    • Hi lk0811, please make sure you're comparing the rates at checkout on both sites and not the search results rates.

      • +14

yes, these are the rates on checkout. bookings.com etc does not sneakily add on tax to their headline rates which is an american thing. i think the discount would have to be much more substantial to persuade us to us a new provider to make up for the trouble of calculating USD to AUD each time and copping transaction fee potentially. i imagine there's less hotels and the website is slower and harder to navigate. also a big factor with travel bookings is the ease of getting refunds on cancellations - a new platform has to play catchup with the majors in this regard

      • +8

In AU we need all inclusive upfront pricing. So search results are the same as checkout.

I signed up. How do I login ?

  • +10

I tried a few hotels in Japan for April 2022. Booking.com is still way cheaper. Who would want to pay membership fee to get rip off? And the website is too slow.

    • It’s hit and miss but you can occasionally save a huge amount.

  • +10

Can you provide some example bookings where you’re cheaper than any other option? If so I’ll sign up. Otherwise this just looks like spam.

    • -1

Hi render, there are a few on the landing page of the link

      • +1

There are no dates on those examples therefore your comparison prices can't be validated. Can you provide some example bookings (including dates, hotel, room type and booking conditions) so these can be like-for-like compared to prove that your service is actually cheaper and worth signing up

  • +2

Searched for rental cars in Hobart. Swift AUD 213.88 per day from Hertz is outrageous, but your website has it for USD 213.88 per day??

  • +3

Signed up and checked out a few prices. Unfortunately not worth the effort

  • +11

Mantra 100 Exhibition 1 - 8 March, total through Club 1 Hotels = $1,163.33 USD, which is $1,630.23 AUD and you get 2327 Clubone points (is that 2% cashback?).
Total through Hotels.com (expedia) is $1,656.95 AUD including 10% back.
Total through Agoda is $1,657.00 AUD with 12% cashback through Shopback
Total through Booking.com is $1,657.00 AUD with 6% cashback through cashrewards.

If this club is not more than 10% off the standard OTA price, then it's not worth it.

After read so many reviews price comparisons above me, I don’t even bother look it up
    Hahaha

  • +10

I tried this last time they offered it for free. I was travelling a lot and checked every single time. Even with the exchange rate better than it is now, I never once found a deal better than other sites. Add in the fact the site design and search functionality is abysmal, the displayed prices then get fees added, and sadly it's not even worth a free signup imho

    • Exactly the same experience. I found agoda to be the cheapest most often (even though it's owned by the same people as booking.com)

      • +1

Agoda is great. It's a very dynamic pricing site though, so always mix up an incognito browser, maybe a vpn, or even mobile site/app and you may get an even better price.

    • Agreed. After adding the tax, the price is not competitive

  • +8

Judging by OPs replies in the comments section, OP sounds unfamiliar with the Australian travel market and our laws related to inclusive pricing.

The post description of a 60% discount is misleading. Reading the comparisons by others ozbargainers, the savings are moderate and mostly eaten up by foreign transaction fees when we pay using AUD credit cards.

It's a tonne of work to do the conversion calculations and the savings are so slim the can easily disappear if your credit card exchange rate is a little different from the googled rate (as they often are).

Not worth the effort signing up.

  • Club1hotels you should update your website to show all inclusive prices (including all taxes and fees) during the search phase (just like most other websites).

This may actually encourage people to consider signing up.

User experience needs to be number 1 and non inclusive pricing is not only illegal, but leaves a sour taste in everyone’s mouth.

  • UP TO 60% OFF*. Yeah up to, probably on some 1 star hotel, this is rubbish.

  • OP prices seem to be cheaper (more cheaper if considered cashbacks) on booking and other OTAs compared to club1hotels. You may need to revise the prices before you post it as offers exclusively for club member, up to 60% off or whatever. Seems a bit misleading.

  • Did some price comparison with Expedia/Booking.com/Hotels.com - can’t see any “up to 60%” savings. Will end up paying more in transaction fees, and for the hassle. Customer support likely going to be an issue for cancellations as well

  • Can't get it to work. I have an existing membership - I tick the box that says so, then it still asks me for all my details and when I click submit I get:

The email address you have entered is already registered. Did you forget your login information?

    • Hi Ramrunner, we have updated the form for New vs Current Members.

  • I had this when this was posted several months ago for 1 year membership, never found anything useful or cheaper. I found this is waste of time and effort.

  • Price is outrageous… email to activate membership
