                  @dji1111111:

                  hE DiDnT aSk HiS GiRLfRiEnD!!11!!!1!

Oh, and where did I say that he asked his "girlfriend"? I'm surprised he didn't ask her though, as all the other people (all 4 of them) were idiots, what's one more idiot's opinion?

He did talk to experts in the field and they are called mechanics since you seem to be clueless

LOL. Mechanics are not experts in any field. I should know. I am one. Most of them are spanner spinning thick heads with almost no high school education and took whatever apprenticeship they could get. Most mechanics don't have two brain cells to rub together and are easily led by others and scared of things they don't understand or are not the status quo. They will easily jump on any "I'm scared of this new thing, so I must shout about it" bandwagon. These are probably the same idiots that said all Japanese cars were rubbish in the 70/80's and then the same in the 90's with Korean cars. "If you'se want quality, you'se have to buy Ford or Holden."

Some random guy at a random party is an "expert" on Chinese cars because he said he was a "mechanic". Pull the other one, champ. My bet is that he is a filter monkey at best.

                  • @pegaxs: Ok you go and talk to someone with a PhD in Automotive Engineering then lol
My education is way beyond most tradies probably but am I going to tell them they talk shit about plumbing, carpentry or whatever field they work in just because I have a better education history and smarter?

              • @pegaxs: Please do, I’m sure people love talking to you! God bless

    • -1

There's a reason mechanics become mechanics.

  • +2

all the chest beating politics aside, the price isn't that bad for an EV SUV considering how inflated new cars cost now adays- this is not much more than a mid spec hyundai tucson. the cheapest non-chinese we are going to be able to access is going to be the 90k+ model Y that is coming soon. and at least you are getting a top of the class battery system which would be my main concern due to safety issues. the price makes up for the build quality.

still difficult to make a good value proposition over the model 3 unless you need a SUV at the moment but it'll gain traction after the initial scepticism if they get good reviews and be semi decent with maintenance and warranty - would have liked it to discount further to get into the market quicker though like what they did with the toyota yaris GR initially.

    • It’s a pretty good offering for their first Aus entrant.

I’d love to see the Han, Xpng G9 or P7 here

Like anything, iterations should make these better and better

  • +7

    Wow amazing oh my god
    Ozrrp.com
What a site please post more to just make us aware

    • +7

Yeah, don't know why this RRP post is being considered a deal.
      Is this just advertising?

  • +5

    The interior is fugly

    • +1

you don't wanna upset the dragon

      • The dragon has employed people to upvote this "deal" for sure. Probably will translate to zero sales

        • I was impying the interior has dragon theme styling lol
          Check out the YouTube videos

    • Like a whale belly haha
      Outside isn’t the worst

  • Can we test drive in Melbourne?

  • +1

Interesting to note that it looks like BYD is planning to sell direct to customers, bypassing the usual dealer network. and provide servicing via mycar branches, which is the former Kmart Tyre and Auto network.

    • +6

And these reasons were why the price was marketed to be in the $30K range because Nexport were “cutting out the middle-man” along with a battery warranty that would be a gamechanger but instead they gave us neither.

  • +2

I wouldn’t buy this it seems ok and more competition is good into the EV market but the company isn’t that well known and they might not be around in seven years for parts/ service or warranty like some other foreign companies

    • i'd give it at least 12mths to see how their servicing and warranty in aus is but BYD is the 4th largest automaker in the world. bigger than Ford/BMW/Honda etc

    • +1

Absolutely massive brand in China. Saw them everywhere. Unknown here

      • Europe and Asia too.

  • +5

Want to know the worst thing about this shitbox(minus the battery maybe)…The branding on the rear tailgate. Not sure what they were thinking by putting the whole phrase that BYD stands for. Well now I'm thinking of 3D printing "Kiss my a**" in big bold letters and sticking on the back of my car where the logo used to be.

    • it's a bit cringe. no idea how that got past their marketing team

    • Agree - would debadge it asap if I got one

  • +2

It looks like the Chinese knock off version of a regular car. For me it feels a bit like buying a car from Ali express.
Sure I'll buy a few bits, but nothing over a few bucks!

    • what's a knock off version of a generic regular car? would you have to build an irregular car?

  • +7

Not a bargain. Previous reports in the week were saying sub $40k.

Now it’s launched it feels expensive.

  • +2

    I will never buy this

  • +5

This is RRP. How is this a deal? It’s not.

  • +5

    30k I will buy it.

  • +3

Not really a deal though is it? ozbargain has become rrp advertising

  • Does it offer optional aircraft laser targeting? Just asking for a shipmate…

  • +2

I wouldn’t be supporting anything that directly lines the pockets of the CCP.

    • +4

You probably already have, just not aware of it.

      • +2

Correct. But it's like every country, ideologically, people just don't want to accept that it happens.

Russian vodka > Russian taxes > Russian army
USA goods > USA taxes > USA Army
        And believe it or not…
Aus goods > Aus taxes > Aus army

      • +1

Lol don’t confuse him. But he definitely has

  • +4

Japanese and Koreans car makers should consider themselves extremely lucky that decades ago when they tried to establish their brands in this country, Ozbargain didn't exist.

    • +4

back then you'd just have people slagging it off over a bbq, few years later they are all putting baby seats on the backseats of one

      • +1

        Probably added towbar as well!

    • +1

Their cars were actually shit back then…

  • +4

It is always good for consumers to have more choices. Imagine the only cars that was allowed to be sold in Australia are Holden and Ford only.

    • +2

Personally I think they should remove all the restrictions they had in place to protect the local car industry, since it’s gone now. That would give consumers far more choice.

Why shouldn’t we be allowed to import cars from Japan as we like? Prices would crash for cars. People who can only afford a $5000 car would be able to afford something better than the current shitbox they have

      • +1

        Yes, I love Toyota Estima.

        • That’s a sensible car to buy. I hadn’t come across that name before. Japan would be full of great cars

  • At $29,999 I'll buy it.

    • -1

never knew poo had a pricetag

  • +5

I'm sure there is a lot of hate for where this car originated from so let me put it like this, the Chinese cars do not have a good reputation in the Australian market unfortunately, even if some of them are not that bad. BYD needs to establish themselves here first and proof that they are reliable vehicles before demanding such prices. its a common sense move someone would pay 10k extra and go tesla, or upcoming offerings from VW with similar pricings.

    • +2

Common sense post. I can’t see how someone could expect Aussies to trust this brand that isn’t even set up here yet. It took a long time for people to start trusting Korean cars. They had to demonstrate over a 10-15 year period that they’re reliable. People had to actually see it.

So I definitely don’t see how it’s racist to not instantly trust this brand, when it’s even possible that there could be differences in end products between this and the local Chinese version, which has definitely happened in the past. And we don’t really know much about it’s history in China in a way that we would trust either. Maybe some people who used to live in China might, but very few would

      • -1

It’s a mix of ignorance and racism where your political bias stops you from being objective and neutral.

You already formed an opinion based on zero first hand experience. It could be a terrible car or a great car. Like all things, no matter where or who makes them, they tend to be rubbish until they iterate till they’re not. The origin or nationality makes no difference to this fact

  • +3

This is the revolution starting, like the first iPhone or Samsung Galaxy - they were the start of something different that will reshape our lives in every way. This car is exactly that, the start of something massive, and all other electronic cars that follow will be better, cheaper, faster and more importantly -the change we need to make our lives better.

    • +5

But BYD is overpriced for the Australian market. Will fail here.

    • What is the revolution you’re referring to? Electric cars in general? Or Chinese cars? Or just anybody other then Tesla selling electric cars?

  • +2

You can't compare domestic chinese market price of $30k to Australia.
Left hand drive conversion for a small market like Australia would add to cost, plus importer margin plus ridiculous shipping costs. There are definitely some questionable design choice like "build your dream" logo. I can already imagine myself being embarrassed driving it around.

MG ZS is getting a update soon on their battery, so the pricing will be sort of on par.

  • +17

This "deal" should really be removed. The same car is 30k in china yet 50k here.

    1) It's sold by a private importer not BYD.

    2) They aren't even eligible for the $3,000 government rebate.

    3) The earliest delivery is supposedly July.

    4) The ev6 and tesla model 3 have actual resale value and dealer backed warranty.

    5) In 5 years these Chinese cars will be in landfill since they are built so cheaply.

    • Agree. It would be much better if the importer is a wholly owned subsidiary of BYD.
My guess is that the extra $10k is for import costs and duties, $5k is the importer's profit. Or even the other way round.
Why can't everyone sells direct just like Tesla..

    • Finally ~ a person who understands the negative post.

Talking about the "interior" or that's its a "POS" is a waste of time.

    • +1

On point 3, why are they not eligible for the rebate and what state are you referring to, as many states have rebates.

      • In NSW they will have to get added to a list once they are actually available, but will qualify for the $300 rebate

  • +5

    what a pos

  • +8

As an Australian citizen born and raised in China, I would strongly suggest avoiding buying things from China, especially things like cars which you can easily find much better alternatives. Every dollar you spent will be partially used by CCP to enforce its evil reign and to prepare for the very possible upcoming war against the free world including your country.

    • +3

yep better buy american cars they need some more cash to fund the proxy war in ukraine at the moment

      • the pot calls the kettle black, they are both the same evil in my book, USA and china. I'm siding with Russia here. imagine if Russia tried to make Mexico its ally and host weapons and military presence in Mexico. how would USA feel? USA would start ww3..

        • If the US would decide to invade Mexico in such a case, it would be the US fault. Now Russia wants to invade the independent country, it's not acceptable in this century. It's not a proxy war.

          • @DmytroP: of course it would be USA's fault if it invaded Mexico, but do you think anyone would side with Mexico? lol NO everyone will be saying ohh USA is only defending their interest and their safety and its Russia fault for setting up military in Mexico and antagonising USA. but when the story is flipped and its happening to Russia, than Russia is the bad guy..

USA wants to make Ukraine a NATO power, USA created NATO and its controls NATO, its basically an external arm of USA disguised as an international army pact. no wonder Russia does not want the devil at its door steps. if Ukraine is so worried Russia might attack they should give direct promises that they will not join NATO.

USA has not stopped their ways of deception and country invasion on false pretences for their own interests. this is the same play here.

    • +5

Speak the truth and expect the wrath of 50 cent army.

    • +3

When this get political? Keep to topic .Discussion about the car.

      • +5

It just means the LNP and media have done their "jobs" perfectly. I agree that the discussion should be about the car and not the politics.

        • +2

But what if a political org owns / controls the car company ?

          • @dealman: Even if so, did the said political organisation point a gun on your head to buy their cars?

    • +1

      …Including "our" country.

    • +1

prepare for the very possible upcoming war against the free world including your country.

As you are an Australian citizen now, shouldn't that be 'your' country as well?

i.e. the correct phrase should be:

prepare for the very possible upcoming war against the free world including our country.

    • Imagine the discussion the other way. Australian cars in China. They’d probably have banned them or put punitive tariffs on them and the actively bad mouthed the cars via official channels. If they were world class it would make no difference

      • Playing by the Trump way

    • especially things like cars which you can easily find much better alternative

      Sounds wrong.

Please provide some examples of some EV alternatives available in Australia, then?

And you can't say Tesla as they are made in China and you can't say MG either as they are Chinese.

      • -1

Tesla is designed by Musk and his team of engineers.

People won't find a better engineered EV for the same price.

      • Using that logic, then because basically every type of product has been made in a factory in China at some point, therefore there’s no reason to buy any products made outside of China, since the Chinese versions will always be the cheapest. Clearly the location of the factory is not the only factor that matters. What about R&D just for one?

  • +2

    Not a bargain

  • +3

I love these posts! gets the forum FIRED UP! forum section is boring and filled with dumb questions

    • i love the huawei / xiaomi / MG deals, i'm a simple man and easily entertained

  • I'm skeptical to this brand.

  • +5

Sorry, I made the mistake of spending $400 on a grey market OnePlus 5G phone from Kogan. So I wouldn't risk $45K on a grey market EV. Call me back when the manufacturer is selling it here and backing it.

  • 100+ likes mean , all the reporters are nothing, just waist their time.

  • +2

0-100 in more than a petrol car. underpowered for an electric..

    • It's probably not more than a $44k petrol car.

    • +1

Here is a comparison… BYD is a claimed 7.3 seconds. A high end performance sports small crossover SUV in turbo, petrol AND all wheel drive. The Hyundai N-Line Premium, is $47k. So, similar price, similar size, similar features (-minus the extra AWD grip of the Kona).

      2022 Hyundai Kona N-Line AWD: 0-100 km/h 7.3 seconds.

Got an example of any other small cross over SUV in this class that blows the Atto 3 away with 0~100 times?

      Toyota CH-R, 10 seconds
      RAV4, 8~9 seconds
      Mitsubishi ASX, 11 seconds
      Outlander, 9 seconds
      Nissan Juke, 7 seconds
      Mazda CX3, 8 seconds
      BMW X1/X2/X3, 6~8 seconds

      • yeah but the point is that this thing is electric. I thought electric cars were all zippy as hell.

        • +1

          I thought electric cars…

          Well, there's your problem… "thought".

From 0 to 60km/h, probably, from 0 to 100km/h not so much.

Electric cars are quick off the line, due to the fact that all their torque is available from 0 RPM, where something like the Kona example above, is only at peak torque at around 3,300~ish RPM. Added to this, the Kona also only has 265Nm at its peak where by the Atto 3 has 310Nm available from 0. Also remember that ICE vehicles have a gearbox that can help multiply and best make use of that torque at different rev ranges. Just see how fast your ICE car is from 0 to 100km/h if you only had 4th gear (direct drive) available.

The other issue is that electric motors have a flat torque delivery that tapers off the faster it spins, so, the faster you go the less torque you have available. ICE have a curved torque delivery and a gearbox to make use of that curve.

So, in the city at relatively slow speeds, start/stop, electric cars will eat ICE cars. They don't need to get up to 3000+ RPM to reach their peak torque, but the faster they go, the less torque they have available.

So, yes, in the city, an electric car would be "zippy", but on the highway, without the benefit of a gearbox, they would not feel the same as an ICE vehicle.

To give you an idea, next time you are on a quiet country road, pull over. If you can, put your car into 4th gear and see how your 0 to 100km/h time is affected and then come back and tell me that a direct drive electric car is slow.

          • @pegaxs:

The other issue is that electric motors have a flat torque delivery that tapers off the faster it spins, so, the faster you go the less torque you have available.

That part doesn't matter, as power (kW) is what moves your car down the road. Power=torqueXrpm/9550. As the motor rpm increases, it offsets the drop in torque (generally) and maintains the same power output:

            https://images.app.goo.gl/sjWu1meJM9MJp3jS6

Note that even though the torque curve declines over time, the power curve stays almost perfectly flat.

The real problem that you mentioned is the single speed gearset. Note that these are not actually direct drive gearsets (1:1), they are torque multiplication/speed reduction gearsets - for reference the Tesla Model 3 is about 9.1:1, so the motor spins 9.1 times for every 1 revolution of the wheels, and motor torque is multiplied by 9.1.

  • +1

Here is that angry mob again

  • +9

Been casually observing the EV industry, particularly as I will likely be in market for new car in the next couple of years.

I think a lot of folks here making comments are going to have a rude awakening when they realise the how big a player BYD is in the EV market. (Atleast in China for now)

Interesting times ahead, probably can't jump on full EV as I would have no means of home charging.

I welcome all competitors with new ideas.

    EDIT: Underground carpark

  • +4

most neg here is looking at china instead of the car/brand. if it was from USA or Japan they will be all over it

    • +2

      No.

Ford, GM and Holden are in the same league of junk.

      Japan ICE is ok.

    • TBH I went and saw the latest MG's that are on offer and found the build quality quite laughable.

I loved the (poorly) spray painted disc callipers and drum brakes.

  • +1

Without hearing from the importer, I wonder if Kmart car service will also look after all the warranty issues and having to source parts, etc. This could be a nightmare.

  • Need somewhere to use all those eneloops that I OzBargained years ago.

  • +3

Does this come with laser targeting included?..

  • -2

Not a deal imo since very expensive

  • +2

    Sydney Airport buses are BYD.
