Cheaper to take bus to DFO at BNE airport (use Gocard).
Then take free shuttle to terminals from same bus stop.

    From CBD, Garden City, etc
    GoCard adult $4.11 / $3.29 (off-peak)
    GoCard concession $2.06 / $1.64 (off-peak)
    GoCard Seniors Free (off-peak)

    Done that many times!
From Garden City on southside, take fast 590 bus direct to DFO. Cheaper than toll fee. 5min walk to bus for me.

    • How is the speed vs these guys?

      • +1

        It depends.
For your research - Links below.

If in CBD - this or similar shuttles would be fastest. Easier with heavy bags. (I just fly carry on, so not an issue.)

Much quicker from my home in South to take bus to DFO. Would otherwise need to get near CBD first - to use this Deal, adding an hour & same cost as to DFO!

Takes me 54min on 590 bus (300m from home), to DFO! Then wait for free 30min departures of Skygate Loop service.

Check Journey planner for services to Skygate (DFO Brisbane).
590 bus links Toombul in North (on train line) to Garden City, Mt Gravatt in South (on busway), via Skygate.

        Skygate Loop service
        (Link to PDF timetable)

        Departs Skygate every 30min 06:30-18:00
Skygate to International Terminal: 10 minutes
Skygate to Domestic Terminal: 20 minutes (via International Terminal)

  • Does the $5 concession go card and add $5 to the card, throw card away after thing still work? Ie $10 trip to the airport from wherever with translink access

    • That is how you buy the GoCard (available in airport or train station)

*Need to produce Concession card to get Concession GoCard. Not available through machines.
I don't use Concession Gocard, so contact GoCard.

Can get deposit back at airport! (Definitely at Train station, possibly in airport)
Makes it a much cheaper journey!

      • No, I mean the hack where you buy a go card and put $5 on it, for a total of $10, then chuck it out. It goes in the negatives but since you chuck it out you dont pay the difference. It used to work, but havent been to the airport for aaaaages so not sure if they changed anything since.

Can guarantee it was a cheaper way than paying the normal fee and getting the deposit back.

        • That also used to work at Sydney Airport. Closed down long ago because of abuse.

Didn't know about it working in Brissie.
If train station has exit barrier (major stations do) - it wont let you exit if not enough value on card to pay fare.
Travelled Brisbane to Robina station - card had insufficient value & couldn't exit barrier (legally).

Am off to Noosa by bus, train, bus tomorrow! Working out if it's worth using "1,2,free" pay for 2 trips & get remaining trips free that day (on some card types).
Downside is it requires a 1hr gap between each paid trip & following free trip to qualify. Makes the trip over 2hr longer, but much cheaper. I'm not in a hurry.

          • @INFIDEL: The one at the airport used to let you tap off and the card goes -$18ish or something. Then you chuck the card away. I know it last worked in 2018.. But have had no reason to go to the airport since covid so no idea what the station looks like nowadays.

If you do the 1,2, free thing to save money and dont want to waste time, pay for the trip there, do a 1 zone trip while there, then that makes the trip home free. Not sure how far you are travelling from to make that much cheaper, but its a fair compromise imo to save some $ but not waste a whole heap of time. Also start travelling after 8:30am to take advantage of off peak prices.

            • @Rain Cloud: That way, I get a free bus-train-bus 125km trip today! As its raining, not in a hurry to get to Noosa.

On bus now to Roma St to catch train to Nambour. Bus into Noosa Heads leaves from that station.

Booked less than $200 accommodation through Telstra to earn $400 worth of Telstra shop points!! (Deal ends this week, so needed to stay now for points.)

To get first trip I walk a few minutes to local bus, get off at stop 100m on, & walk 5 min back. Wait 1hr & repeat. Free an hour after that. Use the spare time to pack bag. Handy if travelling long journeys, like today.

And doing that I never pay peak fares. Been doing it for years.

              • @INFIDEL: Works if you dont live as regional as I do and buses come once an hour (so by the time you tap off, the next bus arrives in less than an hour, so to make it a 'next trip' gotta wait 2 hours) 😬

                • @Rain Cloud: True, can depend on other factors!
Was slugged for another fare while transferring, when bus was few minutes past the 1hr allowed for transfer - I learnt from that.

                  Despite all my planning…
Had unexpected problem - Line from Caboolture to Nambour was closed due to flooding.

Bus replacement slowly wound its way station to station. Arrived too late for connecting service which only ran every 90min to meet train at Nambour. So 4hr journey became too long 5.5hr!

If I was paying… would have been charged extra fare. (Translink would refund. They failed to display the known track closure.)
There was less than the 1hr allowed for transfer, but just over the 3.5hr between first touch on in Brisbane & last touch on at Nambour. (6hr is max journey time allowed on 1 fare.)

Made it to Noosa, but a bit exhausted given the humidity.

So keeping costs down can cost a lot of time, effort planning, & a lot of frustration if something goes wrong.
