  • 1 x 250GB SATA 7200rpm Drive included

For those who wanted to also know….

I want one sooo bad… cannot justify the $$$ yet as I have lil' ReadyNAS Duo that technically does the job.

    • Hi forgot69,

Sorry if i sound like a devil:
This deal was brought back due to request, so i strongly suggest you make up your mind by end of today.

  • Ordered one last week, Tuesday afternoon. You shipped quickly, Wed morning, but AusPost has not moved since. Still showing it in Sydney. Bummer. Your warning about slow interstate is very justified.

Any chance you can do a good price for ECC RAM for this machine, i.e. Kingston KTH-PL313E/4G ?

    • Hi Mate,
Will get back to you on the possibility of any deal on the memory. As we do not keep stock of it yet, we suggest getting elsewhere if you are in hurry. If you can wait, i may able to let you know about the pricing within this few days.

      • I'd rather wait for you guys than get it from Mega*** :-)

If you plan to keep selling those servers it would be great if you stock the matching RAM too. I'd prefer to add an extra 4GB ECC to get to a total of 6GB ECC rather than ripping out the existing 2GB and putting in 2x4GB non-ECC.

    • Being in WA and most of my stuff coming from Sydney, I have found that Aus Post most of the time shows no movement between Sydney and WA until the day it's scanned and delivered. It won't track accross the country, so looks like it does nothing for ages, then it's on board for delivery.

      • Thanks for the heads up. I'm also in WA and had expected the truck would have made it across the Nullarbor by now. Let's hope for delivery tomorrow, I'd love to have the new toy to play with on ANZAC day. Anything that gets me out of getting up in time for a dawn service :-)

  • Edit!

  • plus GST which you have left out of your banner.

This coupon code is limited to :
      1. Registered account only
      2. 1 unit per account

we cannot limit guess account, so we are making this account registration a requirement

      • Yes, Sorry I didn't read it properly and my maths was wrong. I have just ordered one. +1 from me.

        • no worries, let me know any place/ways i can make clearer on the posting to avoid misunderstanding.

  • Are there any HP microservers that support hotswap HDDs?

    • None that we can find at the moment.

    • Look, they're -so- cheap… Just buy TWO & - if one goes down - switch to your Plan B box.

Backoffice boxes (eg, supporting Point-of-Sale cash registers) have been using 100% system redundancy since (at least) the mid-1980's (albeit in diskless platforms, with the price/stock databases stored in battery-backed-up RAM):

Two complete systems, with dual, synced databases & the users ask each for data, & use the one that answers (eg, if the other doesn't).

In those days, the dual systems were -very- costly, custom built systems (delivered & operated in EMF-shielded & physically secure boxes).

Today, a couple of N40L's with independent UPS backup power units would be lots cheaper.

If you have to swap out a drive in one (1) of them, just shut it down & swap away.

If two(2) redundant systems isn't enough, for some reason, make it three (3)…!

"Hot Swap" normally -doesn't- have to be done -instantly- in most cases.

So, relax & - even if you pay the cost of an extra dose of Electricity (for the 2nd N40L), you could conceivably -win- eg, if you located the -each- of your N40L's in different buildings, to address the fire risk.

Don't commit the "fallacy of the single solution" (eg, "I -must- have Hot-Swap at the component level")…

      Be Flexible, be Happy… :-)

      Remember:

      • The flexible tongue survives the inflexible teeth.)
    • Apparently if you install the modded bios on the N40L, then set "Enable “SATA ESP on all PORT” – sets all ports to be external SATA ports, The SATA ESP on all PORT makes all SATA ports hot swappable." Source. Note: I have bought a N40L, but I haven't got around to modding the BIOS yet, so I cannot verify this.

  • Any chance of getting free shipping on the Nortons deal

    • Hi Mate,

It basically cost $0 extra postage, as long as you buy anything together on our store. Eg. HP N40L - Postage = $9.85 , if you add Norton 360 in, the postage still = $9.85. So basically you get a discount on the N40L just by purchasing the Norton 360.

      • no worries, Already bought an N40L from you last week. I picked up Nortons from officeworks for $45.15 instead.

  • Bugger, ordered a HP Microserver on Thursday, paid the extra $20. Still waiting on delivery, not sure what AusPost is doing, i live a walk away from Shopping Express.

    • That is unfortunate. If you still receive zero updates on Austpost end by tomorrow noon, please contact our customer support at 02-83388899 to require assistance in checking with AustPost, in case something happen with your order.

      • +1

Order was placed Wednesday actually, and shipped Thursday.

Im sure it will be fine, and its just Aust Post being a little clumsy, this does happen at times.

Thanks for the awesome service Shopping Express, looking forward to playing with this server

  • Can anyone confirm the 3TB-extra drive will work?

    • +1

      it will support 3TB drives

    • From what I read online you can use them for storage but not too boot from. Just keep a smaller drive for that.

  • I like that they -enforce- their "1 per account" policy,
so folks have a chance to get one of these if they want.

(I really would've liked to have 2 myself at the price.)

  • +1

Who knows a -source- for cheap but fairly good AUDIO cards or plug-ins for N40L's…?

    TIA

    • Yeah, I couldn't resist this & bought one myself.

I'd appreciate any recommendations from current owners regarding LP graphics cards with HDMI audio out…ATI vs Nvidia, passive vs fan cooled etc? TIA from me too! :)

  • People, just keep in mind: Getting the Norton together with the Server means you get extra $1 savings, on top of the Free Norton 360 software (after $60 Cash Back) as there are no extra freight charge on this 2 combos(not sure how significant on ozbargain, but it seems quite significant to a fair bit of ozbargainers :P)

    http://www.wegotserved.com/2011/12/21/hp-planning-powerful-p…
I hope this is true (HP Planning a new model eventually, with N54L CPU)
I have 2 of these already but if I were to buy a 3'rd one, I would need a bit more performance out of my next one for the task I need it for.

I sincerely hope HP keeps making these things at these prices (or roughly similar)

    • I believe the the next model will be much more expensive - closer to $5 / 600 afaik
New CPU / APU is a fair bit more powerful, but won't make much difference to most users

      • I suspect they might be likely to jack up the price but I'm not certain they will - you sound confident - any particular info or a guess?

I do know they tried to sell the original microservers for that much and obviously that was foolish - they need to find a sensible middle ground.
I'd GLADLY pay 350$ for the same box with USB3 and a 50% faster CPU but once you exceed 350$ you're exceeding casual spending $$ figures.

  • Would you sell it for $240-250 with WHS 2011??

    • Hi irajohn90,

We have not stock the WHS 2011 yet, but should stock them real soon. As we don't have stock yet, there is no bundle/specials possible atm. Not ruling out any future offers for the WHS 2011 though.

  • Is this still as noisy as the N36L? The fans are so loud you can't put it in your bedroom (studio :( )

    • Could always replace the fan.

      • yeah I have read some people replace them with a PicoPSU + power block.
        That's about $50-60.

        • Linky link?

          Ta.

    • If you search google N40L +pico
      You'll see quite a bit

  • If you're looking for a large storage drive to go with this, it may be cheaper to buy an external HDD and crack it open to use internally.
I bought a couple of these when they were on sale at $159 (they are currently $179):

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XM2195/seagate-expansion-3tb…

I opened them up, and inside each one was a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm ST3000DM001 drive, so even at $179 it's cheaper than buying it as an internal drive. The caveat to this is that the warranty is likely to be void once the drive is deliberately opened, though I have not had any issues with the ones I bought.

  • this might be a stupid question but this comes with RAM, processor and HD right? All ready to use out of the box?

    • yes it certainly does 2gb of ecc ram 1.5ghz cpu , 250gb hdd, power supply etc - ready to install an os of your choice

This vendor's web site seems broken, at least, when we try to access "Contact Us"

Is this vendor legitimate? Has anyone had dealings with them??? How to contact?

PS We were going to change our means of Payment back to PayPal…

    • Yes it's legitimate. I bought it last time ShoppingExpress advertised here. Quick delivery.

      • That's good to know… I guess they save $$ by not making it -too- easy to ring, while buyers do (I trust) have a phone number to ring (as given above… I saw that -after- posting).

OTOH, having a working Contact Us -is- confidence-building in a new Customer.

PS My call to 02 8 33 888 99 (ie, 02 8338 8899, in the usual format) was ANSWERED at 8:35 central time; I guess they open at 9 am [in Sydney]…

        Friendly, helpful folks.

You may -disregard- our earlier words of concern about this supplier, from all indications… :-)

        • OTOH, having a working Contact Us -is- confidence-building in a new Customer. <== we welcome constructive criticism. Will do some modification to the page shortly.

    • Bought an N40L from them last week using paypal. Arrived fine.

      • I had to eMail DessyTek over a week after ordering, to find out that - coincidentally? - it would arrive in a day or 2…

suggesting a "hold 'em 'til they ask: Where's my N40L?" policy… used by some with cash-flow issues.

I -don't- expect that kind of delay from Shopping Express, though… Prove me -right- SE… :-)

  • Missed out again damnit

  • Has anybody got theirs yet? My Auspost tracking is still says this since 26/04/12:

Article Lodged ALEXANDRIA BULK LODGEMENT CENT

try messaging me your order id, or send a message to our customer support if you think there might be some delay with the dispatch, as you should receive it by now for sure.

      • Thanks, will do. :)

  • Just a question to those who are planning to use this as a HTPC / Media Server - what software are you guys using to stream / decode the media and what are the limits for a system like this?

ATM - I'm simply running Win7 Pro on it, hooked up to a TV and having it act as a normal PC but I'm looking at ways at trying to get a more user-friendly way to play media content without having to dig through folders / squint at the TV reading file names.

For media streaming, I'm using StreamToMe which allows me to watch content through my iPhone / iPad. Doesn't work on other PC's though.

Any recommendations on your current setup would be great!

    Cheers.

    • +1

Mine also just has W7 on it atm but I am thinking about installing XBMC (http://xbmc.org/natethomas/2012/03/24/xbmc-11-0-eden/) on it and doing something similar to this:

      http://www.tekforums.net/guides-projects/(wip)-automated-media-server-xbmc-setup-(long-image-heavy)/

  • is this coupon code is still available?

    • No unfortunately… I missed out and am desperate for a few now.
Fingers crossed for it to come up again shortly… like this week hopefully!
