Anyone know how long these kind of flashlights will stay charged if not used? I've always been wary of getting one, charging it, leaving it in the car for 12 months and then trying to use it and finding it's flat.

    • +1

Seems to be less of an issue these days. I have a C3 in the car. Charge it regularly, maybe every few months. In the car, cigarette lighter, USB-C cable, all good simply during a random drive.

      • +2

Yeah, sounds like when I went to use it it'd be flat. I think I'd be better off with one that runs on AA batteries, which I know will still have at least half their charge after a few years.

        • +1

          Not really.
It's not that hard to remember to charge it once or twice a year. Lol

          • +3

@mckayver: Not hard to buy some AA batteries and know they'll last 5 - 10 years in the glovebox either. Why would I get this if it's only going to last 6 months, and my major concern is "how long will it last in the glovebox without me using it"?

        • Carry a spare 18650 battery or 2x CR123 batteries if you are worried.

          • @Quarn: The entire point is that batteries discharge even when not used. Different chemistries discharge at different rates. I am asking how quickly these batteries discharge when not in use (self-discharge rate). Spare batteries don't help in this case, as both would be discharging at the same rate.

            • +2

@Joker042: Low self-degradation rate and excellent storability
Panasonic CYLINDRICAL LITHIUM CR123 batteries contain manganese dioxide, a substance that is chemically very stable. 90% of the battery capacity remains even after 10 years of storage if preservation conditions are proper.

              • @Quarn: Thanks, thats really helpful, I'll take a look at them.

            • @Joker042: This type of Lithium battery is not a store it and forget it technology. Its dangerous as it grows dendrites between cells within the battery and they short it out. These batteries require active maintenance, not simply keeping them charged, moreso when run in series. Theres a reason the makers of the batteries didnt really make them consumer goods. We just find ways to get them. They are becoming consmer goods, but the point remains the makers like LG and Samsung etc didnt make them consumer goods. They were made to go in packs, with all kinds of safety circuitry. When a laptop battery stops working, its one out of 6 batteries in the pack that die, but that makes the rest vulnerable so circuitry essentially separates all the batteries for safety.

Eneloops (and AA or AAA torch) are your answer. CR123 mentioned above is another as its a safe Lithium tech. However in pairs, the danger reappears as its the ability of one to pull too much from its neighbour and cause thermal cascade. High energy which they are, is a double edged sword. Does it happen often? No, but it does happen and when it does, its pretty bad.

Alkalines may have shelf life, but they also leak sitting around.

Best tech to just leave in the car, is Eneloop. Should have a decent percentage of the charge after 5 years.

              • @Tuba: Looks like these are the go for my particular use case, 20 year shelf life, claimed to be leak proof, and I'll just get a torch that uses one AA battery, which is easy: https://www.energizer.com/batteries/energizer-ultimate-lithi…

Thanks for your response, quite informative, I'll keep it in mind when I'm looking at stuff in the future.

                • @Joker042: Its pretty much a AA version of the CR123 mentioned above (not certain on the exact chemistry). Ive used them for the exact purpose in the car and they are good batteries and last a while in use too. Not sure they are value for money though but as a light to leave for just in case, its not that pricey.

But I have replaced all my just in case torches with Eneloops. Paired with a torch that doesn't pump out 1000 lumens, say 500 is ample, will have runtime and is sensible. There a few 4 battery AA designs that I suggest are prefect lights. But if small form is important,t hersa plenty of single AA or double AA that suit the purpose.

                  • @Tuba: Thanks sounds like I should compare to some eleloops before buying the ones I linked, I'll do a bit of reading. Thanks a lot for your comments.

Doesn't the heat end up degrading the batteries?

        • Yup

        • So they last 2.5 years instead of 5, which is fine.

    • +1

Just twist off the battery cap enough (about 1/8th of a turn on these) to break connection and there will be no drain from the torch. The li-ion battery will hold enough charge for emergency use for ages, though sitting in a hot car probably not ideal for self-drain.

    • I'd avoid this one. Looks to have a pretty small battery.

If you need usb charging I'd recommend a Sofirn flashlight. Most require the larger 18650 or 21700 cell which will last a lot longer. If you're not using it much unscrewing it a bit will open the circuit and not much power will be used. Some also come with magnetic tailcaps which come in handy depending on what you're doing.

      • The description doesn't specify, but comments indicate that it does include a 18650. Though another comment does say it's a non-standard 18650 & their existing 18650s don't fit.
For those OzBargainers that have this torch, could you comment on the battery & compatibility with any existing 18650 batteries?

    Is this coreect?

BEWARE! This unit runs extremely hot on full power. It will become very hot in about 30 seconds and almost too hot to hold after 5 minutes. A fully charged battery will go flat after about 20 minutes.
While it is bright on full power, the excessive heat and very short battery life make it useless.
The medium setting is quite good for basic indoor use, but not outdoor use. Using it only on medium defeats the purpose.

    • +1

Maybe on the max brightness but I think turns to the next lower brightness after 1 or 2 minutes automatically

    • I do agree that light gets very hot after ~5 min but it lasts a lot longer than 20 min.

3-4 hours in multiple ~15min intervals. basically enough to last camping weekend away and used as a secondary light when needed.

    • I've been using one during the storms in Brisbane and found I use medium brightness and it's still very bright (more than enough for outdoor cleanup's works..etc.. I hardly used the high setting for working.. I think I would only use it if looking at things very far away which is not what I need… so if you looking for a general-purpose use touch I think it's still a good unit… done everything I need very well and the battery lasts very long.. I used it for a number of hours no trouble at all and did not even warn on low battery (was still green for me)..

Guess you need to decide what you going to use it for and take it from there… I also read some saying it will reduced from full brightness if on for a few min but again I've never needed full brightness so not too sure…

    • +1

Specs say it only holds 1200lm for 1 minute and then it steps down to 500lm over the next 2.5 hours.

    • These flashlights often have turbo mode and can get hot to the touch. Some ramp down so less heat. Generally you'll get hours worth of charge at mid brightness which is still really light.

      • Yes. All the single 18650 1000+ lumen torches are like this (can only last at max brightness for a minute or so).

  • Thanks just ordered, hard to justify a Wurkkos FC11 at $65 when this is less than half the price

  • +4

Got one last deal, worth every dollar.

  • Well built. Medium bright enough with short bursts at high as needed.

    The strobe is a beast!

  • +1

Six modes is annoying. This would be better if it were 2 (low, high) or 3 modes (low, medium high). If anyone can recommend an alternative with less modes in all ears.

    • Mine just arrived today. There's one switch, on/off fully pressing it. Half pressing it when on will cycle through 4 brightness modes. To get into strobing, you quickly do
2 half presses, which takes practice and would be hard to do accidently. I have another torch, which just cycles through the 4 modes pressing the switch, very annoying..

If you want to watch a 16 minute video review well here it is, Wuben C3
I hope I'm not doing a spoiler alert on the video, but he really likes the torch!!

    Thanks op

  • Where is the elusive discount checkbox located???
Does it show up in the app too?

    • Usually under the price on the product page. Looks like it has removed/reach capped. Marked as expired.

  • Coupon not showing up for me.

  • I got one in last deal, it is very bright, lits up entire backyard.

The only issue I found was the tip gets very warm / may be too hot for toddlers if handled incorrectly.

    • +4

Toddlers using torches. They start young these days

      • I think you missed handled incorrectly

  • Anyone got any recommendations of head torches for camping

    • Wuben h1, it's the best value imo

    • im a big fan of the beebest fh100
not the brightest, but bright enough and way lighter than your standard bulky 18650 headtorch
ive run over one on rocks in the bush, found it a few days later and super glued it back together, it still works…. i have 3 in total

    • its this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/514443

can still be had for around 25 aud from chine

  • +1

For those who missed out, there's now a 28% off Coupon, so $28.07 after discount.

  • Far out. I have been checking on this pricing on daily basis to lookout for the big coupons discount to get it below $25 and missed it again!

  • How does this compare to the L60?

    Any code for that one?

    • I bought an L60 but was not impressed and returned it. Key for me was the rubber micro USB cover doesn't actually seal in place, and falls out (though is attached) very easily. So not really waterproof.

Mine the zoom mechanism was very stiff, but the actual light and beam produced was decent.

  • Is this worth when your phone has flash?

  • I grabbed one yesterday, thanks!

Wondering if this can replace my 10+ year old LED Lenser P7! :-D

  • Reminds me of Dealextreme heydays, I prefer AAA/AA variants

  • Just got mine delivered.

No idea how the button works yet, it works on presses but also half presses?

Anyway, once I took the tab out and flicked it on, looked down the barrel and instantly blinded.. 🤣

    • +2

      Half press to change modes/brightness.
Single press for brightness, double press for strobe, triple press for SOS.

      • I accidentally got it into strobe earlier and almost died again.. 🤣

I find it hard to do those single presses properly. I almost always fail to quickly double bump it into epelepsy mode. 😅

Thanks for the tips though, will definitely give it a try later tonight. Might just need a little practice..

  • Still available from Amazon at $30.59 and an included 10% off coupon so should be down to like $27.74?
