        • +1 for the Meatballs, the strips are my favourite our of the line up, very nice in an asian style stir fry!

  • +15

Just here for the funny comments from meat eaters. That obviously doesn't appear from vegans and vegetarians on meat deals.

    • +9

yeh its weird how vegans are portrayed as crazies who get triggered over erything but on every meat deal they say nothing but vice versa happens and its like this

      • +1

LOL. You know it only happens when people feel threatened, people don't like change. Didn't people think the light globe was the devil's work or something like that? Not the first time and also not the last.

        • +2

Look up "false equivalence". Oh, and personally I am very threatened by vegans. A practice so unhealthy, threatens to become dominant due to influence and lobbying of a small, misguided cult where it is not enough for them to be left alone with their food choices but they want to impose it on the rest of us. Refer to constant one-sided promotion by vegans of harms of agriculture. In the future we may not have a choice but to consume vegan food. This is threating to people like me because food is one of the most important and fundamental things for humans to be able to thrive. Meat plays a key part in that. We would not have evolved to where we are now without having eaten meat throughout our evolution. The harms of banning meat consumption would have disastrous consequences for future of humanity. This is why such harmful and misguided ideological ideas like veganism need to be fought aggressively. I will leave you with this: Meat-eating extends human life expectancy worldwide

          • +1

@findingbargains: I yawned after the first line.

Obviously feeling a bit threatened when someone comes along to a light hearted joking conversation with a bazooka.

Adelaide University I am not sure is even in the top 100 university in the world. Sometimes articles get published for PR and rankings (some of it is utter trash. Don't forget some famous medical journal published false facts about MMR vaccine causes autism and back in the day when many articles were published about how smoking didn't cause cancer). I got that in my Google news thread too.

Did you also read that Bacon and Sausages is on the list of possible carcinogenic (cancer causing) foods published by the WHO?

I just laugh when you demonstrate exactly what I am talking about. You don't see vegetarians and vegans putting "this is carcinogenic, that is causing that illness" on the weekly Woolworths and Coles half price specials post.

            • @netjock: You have some evidence that this research is flawed? Is all science flawed in your opinion or just selectively the research that does not support your opinion? Otherwise why would you cite these irrelevant examples of corruption in science (which I am well aware of) as if somehow all science is flawed because of a few rotten eggs?

Oh and Adelaide Uni is "ranked in the top 1% of the world’s universities". Good enough for me.

              • @findingbargains: Top 1% of some selective criteria. That is like Lada is top 1% of car manufacturers. They just don't point out it is for break downs.

As I pointed out you are trying to find a very shaky leg to stand on. When the WHO has a lot of meat products on possible carcinogenic list. I guess you are going to say Adelaide Uni has more authority than the WHO.

Noted I have pointed out the counter opinion to your article from the WHO. So I am not saying research is flawed. Just there is research for and against published all the time.

Like I said before you are just a good laugh. People who don't get a joke and decide to get serious like it really hurts.

                • @netjock: WHO is a joke. A politicized organization whose true colors came to light during COVID. I am well familiar with their meat demonization and that has been thoroughly debunked by reputable scientists and medical professionals as has the vegan bible "The China Study" (more appropriately called "The China Fairy Tales For Little Vegans"). Say, what university degree do you have and from which university (if you dare)?

                  • @findingbargains:

                    WHO is a joke

You didn't get the joke at the start of this thread so I don't think you know what a joke is.

University of Adelaide vs WHO staffed by competitive field of the best from around the world. We know which is a joke right?

Say, what university degree do you have and from which university (if you dare)?

LOL like you haven't exactly given your credentials. I enjoy the "if you dare" as in "you are a light weight"

2nd highest ranked university in Melbourne for my bachelors
8th (or there abouts) in overall global rankings (as in front page, not 8th buried on page 20 for undergraduate satisfaction for orientation week) based in London, United Kingdom for my masters (STEM specialist, rankings not padded by arts degrees)

    • It's amazing how much they project.

Go search the comments on the any deal - wagyu, biltong, lamb, etc. Still no vegans showing up!

  • Lol read that as Tinders, thought its some new vegan meetup app…

    • No, that’s Veggly

  • Looking at the nutrition facts, Meet Balls pretty decent, low saturated fat, low carb low sugar. Not too sure about sodium though at 828mg (240g packet, 80g per serving, 3x 276mg, who eats only 80g per serving?), similar to say all time favourite Mi Goreng at 820mg per serve (85g packet).

Cost is the main factor I won't be getting more than 1 or 2 packs. Go for Tenders or Strips, way higher protein.

    • +4

Saturated fat is not unhealthy. Read some recent studies. Things are changing dramatically about our understanding of this topic. Avoid polyunsaturated industrially produced seed oils as they are prone to oxidation and cause inflammation in the body.

  • -3

I think a good vegan substitute is a normal person with a balanced diet including meat. Paying for virtue signaling with your health sounds like a terrible idea.

    • +2

I'm guessing you had a vegan ex girlfriend who (profanity) your dad or something right?

      • +1

Haha there it is!! When you can’t reply to what’s said, queue random slurs.

  • +2

The strips and tenders are very good! I’m a very casual vegetarian (aim to sub out red meat once or twice a week) and it’s the best meat alternative with decent protein and low carbs. I normally just pan fry til it gets crispy, salt and pepper and have it with avocado, poached eggs on toast

    • Do you defrost first or straight into the pan from the freezer?

  • +15

People can eat whatever they want but I find it weird that meat eaters would comment on vegan food to trash it. The worlds gone backwards, where’s the logic? Surely there’s no harm in eating vegan?

    • +3

No, you're right, it's genuinely weird. People just feel the need to spew hatred on those that are different from them.

    • +2

Meat vs vegan is now part of the "culture war". Shipped over from america. Meat eaters "trigger" vegans. Eveyone as to own each other.

      • +12

pretty sure the carnivores are the ones triggered here

        • -1

A reason why; vegans (and to some extent vegos) generally aren’t choosing to avoid meat or animal products because of health reasons. It’s for a faux social stance. Mix in “environment” reasons and you have a hypocrite too.

A carnivore with a balanced diet (not eating gluttonous portions either) is the most sustainable way to live.

          • +3

            @ctg: You're just completely wrong

    • I think it's out of retaliation for the vegans that trash people for eating meat. It may be a small minority that actually do this, but they're usually the loudest too.

  • +3

There is no doubt that meat is more natural than something synthetically reproduced in a lab (and hence higher costs). I don't mind meat free products, but a regular price $9.50 for 240g of product is ridiculous

    • +3

Most meat, upwards of 90% is fed garbage, antibiotics and food they cant even digest properly. More natural my ass. Its also cheaper because governments subsidze meat production. Fake meat would be cheaper if it wasnt for the billions governments pump in to meat.

      • +6

Rubbish. You show little understanding of Australian farming standards. We have some of the best meat in the world here. You're also incorrect about the government subsidies. If that were the case meat would be a lot cheaper.

        • You've convinced me.

      • +1

This makes no sense. How would the lack of a subsidy in one industry make it cheaper to buy another line of products?

    • +1

Ah yes, meat that's selectively bred and so drugged up that they get crushed under their own weight during growth (chickens) and stewing in the literal shit of other chickens, and others that are on an endless cycle of pregnancy to produce babies to produce milk then slaughtered at 1/4 of their natural lifespan (5 years vs 20+, cows), and others further still that are gassed to death in gas chambers en masse (sound familiar?).

So natural - just like how ancient humans got their meat!

      • Fake cows/pigs/chickens don't exist. Real ones do.
Natural comes from the root word nature.

Anything chemically/scientifically grown is by default less natural. Of course non natural things can be better, for example a car instead of a horse but to claim something that was never living in the first place as anywhere near natural is asinine.

  • +2

Why does the "v" word (vegan) trigger this place so hard.

    • I don't mind vegans and I had amazing vegan food at my first vegan marketplace in Olympic Park with my first ever vegan friend. I won't convert but I will always try it when exposed.

But I think the V-word is so triggering, and in many other online forums and spaces is that they can get preachy, in your face, opinionated, extreme and judgmental. I have never seen a vegetarian or different version of vegetarian go to the lengths of what vegans do.

This is my opinion, but I could be wrong.

      • I mean fair enough if the hate comments are in response to judgemental vegans, but this is just a deal about a product that said nothing about veganism and yet people are very triggered

      • V is for victory
        M is for muscles

        Who knows.

People pick on minorities. Just look at the school play ground.

    • Think of it like religious people. It's completely fine when they're practising themselves and living their best life. When I get shoved pamphlets in my face at the train station every day (by either of these) or actively told how I have to live (again by either of these) it gets problematic.

  • +2

I’m wondering how much seasoning or food additives are added to make these taste good?

Edit: had a look at the ingredients, doesn’t seem to be bad at all!

    • good to see no cholesterol, transfats, and minimal saturated fats. Sodium is alright per 100g, most people would probably eat the whole packet though.

    • +2

Saturated fat is actually good for you. There is more and more research showing this. The main problem are seed oils ("vegetable oils"). They are highly oxidised, hence highly inflammatory.
Lots of Canola oil in these, which are bleached and treated with hexa chemicals.

This video gives a pretty good overview:

      • +1

How much is good for you? The quantities would outweigh any benefits if have to much.
Pretty sure you'd be healthier living without oils most cooking oils.

Just like saying LDL cholesterol is good for you (HDL is the good one)

PS this is interest on the best/worst oils

        • +1

Why your doctor thinks cholesterol is bad?

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-nq60_oEIc

          • @vchung916: Will have to check it out.
Could spend all day on These type of threads, everyone has their own opinions.

As long as the total is within range and generally the lower the better. My good HDL helps the bad LDL habits.

Agree that the doctors won't benefit from being healthy and not get a kick back from prescribing pills for cholesterol and heart disease..

  • If only more people start to eat these, so I can get actual meat for cheap. You can't get that orgasmic feeling while eating lamb loin chops with anything.

    • +2

What if I told you there was another way to get an orgasmic feeling?

      • I mean eating anything else

  • +5

Bought these out of curiosity , ended up in the bin not sure how anyone could say it's a meat substitute unless they never tried meat themselves . Each to their own.

  • +4

I knew as soon as I saw this it would turn into an anti vegan war. FFS get over it. Somebody posted a product on special to help the others who might want to save a few bucks and now it’s all about the pros and cons of alternative meat. This never happened when people used to buy imitation leather jackets. If you have a problem with this product and the debate it brings out in some arced up people it’s time to accept that some people want to eat things that are different to what you eat. I have news for you, people all over the world eat things different to you. Big deal. Get over yourself.

    • +2

To all the people who got triggered just by seeing the original deal (and many of the messages here) - look up 'cognitive dissonance'

  • +1

Thanks OP macros and ingredients list look good. Might give it a go. Hopefully it's better than Quorn cos I couldn't stomach that at all.

  • One day the whole world will be forbidden to Eat meat due animal cutlery so get used to it know folks😎

    • Cows with forks?

    • Lol I just love the idea of police during routine checks of people's backyards to see if they have any chickens. I guess one day no one will be trusted to have pets either 😂

    • Yes and until people realise that almost all of these the pandemics have started due to animal agriculture and practices - swine flu, bird flu, covid-19, mosquito japanese encephalitis (pigs again)..
