This is a way more versatile:

    Vegeta Salt Reduced Gourmet Stock & Seasoning, 180 g, Vegetable, 180G https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08H22YKCZ/

Unfortunately more expensive, despite less salt and no MSG.

Not sure why you got negged ……the salt reduced version and no msg is great, I had a sample pack once but not a supermarket shelf item so people might not be familiar with it .

      • +2

Agreed - I've had both and the salt reduced is miles better than the regular gourmet one.
But it depends. The regular Gourmet powder is good if you're bad at cooking. Already packed with MSG and salt, so just add that in and don't worry about seasoning… the stock is the seasoning.
The reduced salt gives you more control on the flavour and balance without the stock overpowering your dish. You can season / flavour to your taste (e.g. if you don't like the taste of MSG in that dish).

        • +12

If you don't like the 'taste of msg', you don't like flavour

          • +2

@tetra: I heard somewhere that MSG has almost no flavour, but enhances the other flavours of things around it, hence it a flavour enhancer, not a flavour in it's own right. Not sure if it's true though - never tasted pure msg on it's own. I also read that 627 and 635 also enhance the enhancing effect of the MSG (621).

            • @ShipShapeRC: Have tasted MSG on it's own, and you're right, doesn't really have a flavour but it's all umami; just savouryness. Just a mouth feeling. It's kind of weird having it by itself, but it does really enhance the flavours of dishes.

            • @ShipShapeRC: That actually is about right. I've tasted msg on its own, very mild flavour.

          • @tetra: There is such thing as too much though - without it in the stock you know how much is in there. If you like MSG, you add it, if not you don't.

Not sure why you got negged …'

Somebody must got offended by "versatile" or "despite". Another potential source of confusion is MSG vs MCG.

    • +6

Why on earth would you want no MSG 😱

      • +1

It says no ADDED msg so it can still be in the other ingredients and not be listed as an added ingredient on it's own. So you wont necessarily miss out on your unbound glutamic acid hit of flavour.

        • there is an association of MSG and "cotton mouth" …. not sure if its MSG or the salt content in dishes , try to get theta MSG hit from other things also e.g mushrooms, parmessan, etc,etc though I do use stock powder to supplement.

Nothing like some MSG in the morning…

    • +13

MSG being unsafe is a myth.

      • I'm pretty sure he did not mention safety, so not sure why negged. It's actually a movie reference joke if you caught it.

      • But it is a choice, some people like to buy things MSG free and just add a smaller amount at their own control.

Kum Lee Asian chicken stock much better. Found veg weak

Call it umami ……much more hip ……"umami bomb" vs "msg bomb"

      • -1

        Nah.LSD does that.

        • Yes ordinary water, laced with nothing more than a few spoonfuls of LSD

    • Thanks, i have bought 4 of these too

The risk with pantry items from amazon is getting short used by dates. Easily over half the items i've gotten this year so far have been that way. Maybe i just had a good run before now, but darn, it's getting a bit annoying lately.

    • Message them and they might refund you.

  • Did somebody say Vegeta? >:(

  • +2

This one has much better reviews than the Raditz stock powder

  • The Massel one tastes much better, all its varieties are vegan and its normal price is cheaper

    • They're completely different products for different uses. IMO both are great.

  • +1

Is the powder level over 9000?

  • Goku' stock never powers down

  • Missed out
