  • Is the renewal price at cost?

    • +1

The current registration price of $8.99 applied to any registration period, between 1 - 5 years. So if you were to register a .AU domain for 5 years, it would only cost $44.95.

The renewal price is the best we can provide at this time, it is not cost price.

  • +3

VentraIP is offering them for $8.67/yr

    • +2

Yes, we are aware of that but it's only 32 cents less than our price. At this time, we cannot offer a lower price that what we are already doing!

      • -4

So go with the cheaper and more reputable company?

        • +3

Well, we've been in this business since may 2001 and are also a 'reputable' company but maybe not as famous! Have you tried getting support from them? Its probably going to take longer than us! Being a smaller company allows us to provide a more personalised experience and better support, as well as better hosting prices!

          • -2

@HostingB: Wow, that is a big statement. I tested clicking on chat on both sites and I have started chatting with a person from VentraIP while on your website it is still stuck in submitting. Please make sure that it is true what you are claiming because from my experience now VentraIP is more responsive than you.

            • +4

@vicez: Thank you for letting us know! We are proud of our service, just being a bigger player does not mean they are better.

              • -2

@HostingB: I agree but you cannot claim that your support is better than VentraIP. You can boast your service but don't discredit other companies' services, especially you don't have facts to back it up.

                • +2

@vicez: We are not discrediting them or their service. We are simply saying that as a smaller company ourselves, we may understand the needs of other smaller players in the market and be able to deal with them better! No one is going to be a perfect fit for everyone.

            • +5

              @vicez: don't be an (profanity)

            • +1

              @vicez:

I tested clicking on chat on both sites and I have started chatting with a person from VentraIP while on your website it is still stuck in submitting

It's no better with VentraIP, I am stuck in a queue with a "Your wait time will be approximately 40 minute(s)"… which had not changed for the last 5 minutes…

[Edit 40 minutes later] Chat auto-disconnected without a single response.

            • +1

@vicez: I tried ventraip’s “24/7 chat” and out of hours it’s just a bot. Then during business hours they weren’t available. So it’s not that amazing.

          • +1

@HostingB: Asked a simple question to chat regarding the new .au domains and got generic spam response that didnt answer my question and despite being copypasta was still full of grammar errors and poorly written. I replied with a link to this post saying "so much for personalised experience and better support", interestingly I was immediately switched to a different staff member but was already turned off by the experience so closed the window.

            • @sk3iron: Hey sk3iron, thank you for your comment and sorry for your experience. Yesterday, we were absolutely swamped on live chat! We did not anticipate this level of interest when we posted the thread. Live chat is a pretty hard place to be for a staff member, there is a lot of pressure to be perfect. Sometimes, its hard to come up to expectations, especially on a day like yesterday. But we learn and move forward, thats what businesses do. I'm not making excuses for your experience, we are truely sorry that you were not impressed. We will make sure we are prepared next time and better able to meet the needs of our customers! Thank you again for your interest :-)

      • Do you have anything that distinguishes your service from ventraIP or is it exactly the same product for a higher price?

        • +1

Better service and support, for an almost identical price! Faster and cheaper hosting services. So yes, we do consider our products to be a better offer as you get more value.

  • Am I able to register ozbargains.com.au?

    • +1

.COM.AU requires an ABN or ACN. If you have one, and you have a business name that is a close or exact match then yes! Considering, we are on a forum that is already a close match to the one you are trying for, I am not so sure!

      • Oh noes…

  • -1

Having to need the .com.au version.. what a waste of money

  • Don't understand this .au domain, they just want people to pay more to secure they .com.au so that nobody will register .au with the existing .com.au

  • +6

The whole .au thing is a scam by the domain industry. If someone has a business under a .com.au and someone registers the .au to try and swipe business then they would be guilty of misleading and deceptive conduct.

All that is going to happen is .com.au holders will register the .au to protect their interests and increase the revenue of the registrars.

There is no legitimate reason to open .au for registration other than revenue. In fact the sales pitch above is register to protect your interests!!!

    • +1

We do share your opinion on this. However, spending this much to secure your name is likely going to be worth it. Also, the .AU domain will probably become the default going forward, as its shorter than the .com.au version and much easier to type, especially on mobile devices.

    • -1

      Scotty from marketings idea

    • +1

This is simply not true, if someone parks a domain with the intent to sell, they need an ABN or ACN and prove they can register that domain.
.AU is for anyone who does not hold an ABN or ACN so for individuals.

      And there is this.

When .au direct names launch, for the first six months a Priority Allocation Process will be in place that will enable you: An opportunity to apply for the exact match of your existing .au domain names

I also used to work for a registry and had to qualify many businesses for their .com.au.
Not cut and dried as you state.

      • .AU is for anyone who does not hold an ABN or ACN so for individuals.

That is the problem for anybody to register your .com.au domain with .au.

BTW, I just registered it with goDaddy and it did ask for ABN

  • You need to be careful. All the contested domains seem to be showing as available on your website. Many of these should be contested which Ventraip currently isn't allowing to be registered. A bit tricky given you are taking money upfront.

    • +1

We pass them to the auDA system and and ones that are refused will be given a full refund. I will take a look at API integration to make sure we are not registering contested ones. Thank you for pointing this out!

      • -3

You should be doing this firsthand. Not good at all.

        • +2

Well, this has only been live for less than 4 hours and we already know what is happening! I have fixed the multi-contested domains and they will no longer show as being available.

          • -4

@HostingB: You have posted a deal which isn't available in most case.

            • +2

@rack: We posted a deal to register .AU domains. Our system is fully capable of making that happen so I don't really understand what you mean here!

        • +2

It simply is not possibly when a automated system is used where an API is what a customer uses to register.
This is not something a person would monitor, it simply is not possible.

          • -2

@[Deactivated]: What you on about? Ventraip is doing it.

            • @rack: So you're telling me their system is not automated and you have to ring to register a domain?

    • +1

Many of these should be contested which Ventraip currently isn't allowing to be registered. A bit tricky given you are taking money upfront.

Actually Ventraip is doing exactly the same. They let me registered contested domains, took my payment, and then showing afterwards "The provided domain registration eligibility information is invalid. Please update this information in order to continue with the registration of this domain name." I tried to update info as they asked but was unsuccessful. Could not get hold of any support. First attempt disconnected after 40 minutes. My current attempt has a wait time of 75 minutes!

    • +1

VentraIP actually does let you “register” it before proving eligibility.

  • Got it thanks

  • The same thing was done in NZ. This is just to get more money.

Why cant Hosting Bee do this for cost price of $8.67?

    • PayPal are also charges fees for processing transactions. As a smaller company, we cannot pay all those costs out of our own pocket. Hence the 32 cent increase.

      • Still doesnt make sense. You are not paying anything to advertise on ozbargain. Plus, Osko transfers are instant and free.

Better to buy from VentraIP then, what is the deal posted here for 32 cents more with Hosting Bee?

  • +12

    tough crowd

  • +13

really going to argue over 32 cents? you degenerates.

    • -3

32c per domain per year. Many of us have a lot of domains, so it adds up.

Also, the savings over 5 years, it adds up to hundreds of dollars difference.

      • +2

        lmao shut up

    • +2

Wots Ellen got to do with this?

    • +4

      OzDegenerates.au

  • Table.au is available, interesting

    • Table.au is contested.

Are you in the Table Business? Do you use Tableau?

      • I have no interest in taking it, I’d think billion dollars worth organisation tableau would

They aren’t registered in Australia though, so someone could take it here. A table fan club

  • List of Accredited Registrars
    .au accredited registrars

    List of Registrars
    .au registrars

Might be useful to know the list if you are going to register domain name for business

    • Hosting Bee probably is a wholeseller of one listed on the lists.

      • Yes, we use Synergy Wholesale to register our domains. However, we are actively working towards becoming an accredited registrar as well. We'll be on the accredited registrars list soon!

    • Might be useful to know the list if you are going to register domain name for business

If you want a more detailed list broken out by who owns each accreditation take a look at this.

Not probably has to be. If I figure it out I'll put it here. https://www.drunk.domains/au-registrar-reseller-list/

  • +2

    OP held themselves well.

  • +3

For those who are wondering "why use this"?

Well I have some .id.au domains atm, and people get SOOO confused when I give them my email as "<name>.id.au>. I've managed to swap my family name to a <name>.au from <name>.id.au, which will also ease the move off Google G-Suite 😂.

Unfortunately my main one is contested … so long wait until Sept, luckily only $7.

PS: My registrar was already VentraIP so it was fairly quick and painless to register and confirm eligibility.

    • +2

it'll be 2 generations before they understand

    • +1

I hate you, what a great idea, I now want this.

  • Signed up but when I put longer than 1 year the price was the RRP instead of the discount - are you able to help?

    • -1

That should not be the case! Let me see and get back to you.

    • -1

I can confirm the price is set to $44.95 for a 5 year term which is $8.99/yr.

      • That’s good but when I was registering the domain and I set the time to 2 years I was being charged $17.xx per year - that’s why I stuck with 1 year.

Thanks for the reply but I think I’ll transfer the domain to someone else as the experience so far hasn’t been great

        • I am not sure how you were being charged that amount. I did recheck and the pricing seems to be fine.

  • +1

If I buy a domain for a year (ongoing) and wish to sell it or someone wants to contact to buy it off me how does that work?

    • Depends on which .au name space that we're talking about.

If we're now talking about a direct registration you can transfer that to pretty much anyone as long as they meet the residential requirement. The owner would need to complete a change of registrant to become the legal owner when you transfer it as part of the sale and comply with the eligibility requirements to complete that transaction.

However remember you as the current owner need to abide by auDA Monetisation Policy but that's pretty easy to comply with.

    • Parking .au domains from lazy companies that failed to apply during the priority registration period is going to be a goldmine, i'm sure theres more than a few someones with a very long list of domains they'll be targetting.

  • -1

Great - my order got cancelled as I don’t have an ABN. What a joke.

    • Sorry about this. Can you PM me and I will see what happened to your order.

  • Got what I wanted, thanks

  • -1

Great, they confirmed the domain then invoiced me, then cancelled it 3 hours later…. what a joke.

    • If your domain was a single contested domain, and the system was unable to determine that you were the owner of the original .AU domain, it may have cancelled the order. I am happy to see what happened and reprocess the order if you can provide the priority token. Please open a ticket or PM me with your domain or order number. You can get the token here: https://priority.auda.org.au

This has been a learning curve for everyone, and we are thankful for your patience!

      • the .com.au didn't even exist…

        • It does not have to be a .com.au, it could be .id.au, .net.au. or a org.au!

        • Wondering is that mean you have to be the owner of the .com.au domain to register for .au

          • @superforever: Let's say you are tying to register something.au, and you OR someone else already has something.com.au. In that case, auDA will allow the entity who owns something.com.au or something.net.au or something.org.au to register something.au now. If you do not own the .com.au / net.au / org.au / id.au version of that domain, then you will need to wait until this priority registration period is over and the domains are publicly released. I hope that makes it clear.

  • Seem like you need ABN to register, I got the same .au as my .com.au , goDaddy did ask ABN.

    • Yes, we thought the same. However, we have been able to register .AU domains even without an ABN since yesterday. You do need to provide some sort of valid ID, such as a drivers license or Medicare card number.

UPDATE: You have to provide an ABN if you are registering for a business.

    • Registered using driver license details.

  • If the .com.au version already exists, will the owner of that domain be notified if I try to register the .au version?

    • +1

I don't think so, unless you create the priority token.

    • Unless you own one of the other domain names in the string you will not even be able to register.

However if you do own one of the other domain names and you're registering your priority interest none of the other applicants are notified.

You can check the status of the domain name and who has already applied here.
