Actually, the 'Best Restaurant' Gift cards have a slight advantage here. From Coles,

    • You can use your discounted coles voucher to get this voucher
    • You get the fuel discount vouncher (?)
    • You get flybuys points as well
    • You probably wont get (or cannot see in the T&C) "only pay via savings account, no Visa etc"

Call me a true OZB'er, but having a look at the list of its restaurants, some of them are also present in the Gold Entertainment book.

So you can ask for the bill to deduct your offer from the Gold Entertainment book, then when the updated bills arrive, you pay via the gift card? Is this possible ?? (NOt really sure myself)

    • I think it wouldn't be too unreasonable… there would be customers who paid full price for the vouchers to use them th ere.

The Point @ Albert Park is no longer in the Entertainment Book though, so these gift cards really make it quite tempting.

    • The terms of the Entertainment Book specifically state that their offers are not to be used in conjunction with any other offer.

      • +1

Paying with a gift card is not an offer.
The gift card is like cash to the restaurant.

        • So if they're like cash, you're getting a 20% discount on the gift cards because…?

Your argument doesn't sound unreasonable on the surface, but the arbiter of what does and doesn't constitute a "third-party offer" (as the EB guidelines state) is ultimately the restaurant management. And since I imagine that they don't see the full amount of the sale from a gift card (even when you buy it for full price), I'm betting that they'll refuse to accept both it, and an Entertainment Book offer.

You can certainly try it, but I wouldn't want to be the one stuck arguing with the manager in a full restaurant.

        • I can confirm you can use these gift cards with the Entertainment Book vouchers. I did back in March with no issues. Just remember to activate your 'Best Restaurant' gift card before using it.

      • Understood, but this is along the line of my earlier question, "is using a gift card to pay an "offer"? " Could have been given a genuine gift card for as a gift and use it to pay.

I am sure that the Good Guys gift card deal could have been applied similarly, but they priced matched and yet they still allow everyone to use the gift cards to pay.

        • It'd be up to the individual restaurant.

        • +4

Im quite sure you can use for the restaurants.

How would they know you purchased it at full price or discounted? Also, you are not using an "offer" from the restaurant for another "offer"

If I had been given the best restuarant card for my birthday, why wouldnt I be able to use it at the nominated restaurants? It's similar to a bedit card.

    • How do you get a discounted coles voucher ausooi???

      • sorry.. my bad.. i meant the coles gift card :).. my staff shop sells $100 coles gift card for $95.5

        • my staff shop sells $100 coles gift card for $95.5

where else I can get this?

        • ENTERTAINMENT BOOK. You can get $100 gift cards for $95.

        • ENTERTAINMENT BOOK. You can get $100 gift cards for $95.

Is there a limit or how many time you can use per year?

        • No,you can get unlimited coles gift cards using the Entertainment book.

        • how do you buy the coles giftcards from the entertainment book?
do they charge postage, or you have to pick it up from somewhere?

        • postage is free.

      • they have a new system… - used to be express post (free).

Now they will send the cards in the mail, standard post… and activation codes in the email. I just ordered some, waiting for them to arrive, to see how it goes.

    • " … coles voucher to get this voucher "… SORRY, should have been "coles gift card to get this gift card"

    • +3

So you can ask for the bill to deduct your offer from the Gold Entertainment book, then when the updated bills arrive, you pay via the gift card? Is this possible ?? (NOt really sure myself)

Yes..I've done this before so it "shouldnt" be a problem

    • Sounds like an awesome deal and I'll be stocking up.

Looks like the restaurants will be pretty busy for the next year but will be wondering why they aren't making any profits.

Technically the t+c state you can only use one gift card and then the balance is to be paid by another method, but in practice I would think they would accept multiples.

      • +1

actually that not what the T&C says :P

        Q. Can I use more than one gift card in the same transaction?

        A. Yes you can use multiple Best Restaurants Gift Cards when paying your bill

Really.. I don't understand the +ve votes unless they are for the best restaurant cards.

With respect to sanity, if you'd advertised 20% off (directly off the price, rather than gift cards), you'd have been negged to oblivion. People would have asked which items were cheap. And unfortunately with Sanity's business model, that's literally nothing. Which is why Sanity stores in WA so often go out of business. Maybe it's different on the east coast, but here they drop like flies.

  • ^ Meh, Sanity have the best customer service in any dvd/music store by FAR. That counts in my book. Plus they do have good prices, especially multi-buys.

    • +1

I think they have absolutely terrible prices. Would have to be some damn good service to make up for it

    • Unless you count the over handling of disks.
During some of there multi buy deals or the recent buy 2 panasonic blus get 1 free an extra 20% off that would be good value

    • The worst prices in there given industry by the length of the flemington straight. Just a brashs reincarnate who were much the same, could always go to kmart or target and find the same product at least 25% cheaper.

    • The only thing worth getting in Sanity are the multi buys. Everything else is at least 25% dearer than everywhere else making this deal sort of worthless in that regard. They do have good service for their online shop, stuff that is stated as in stock, generally is, which is more than you can say for DSE and JB.

This is a cannibalistic discounting machine!
Use the Entertainment Book to buy Coles gift cards at 5% off.
Use these to buy Best Restaurant gift cards at 20% off.
Use these to pay after using an Entertainment Book voucher to take 25% off the bill.
    0.95 * 0.80 * 0.75 = 57% out of pocket, relative to the %100 the meal would otherwise cost.
(Plus salary package meal/entertainment receipt if you are eligible, to save your marginal tax rate from the bill.)

    • +1

LOLOL!!! You must be Asian or Indian! LMAO you are king!! I will do this cheapskateasian trick tomorrow!!

  • This is an awesome deal. I get 5% off at all supermarkets (Breeze mastercard deal a while back) + 20% off at coles + entertainment book at a heap of great restaurants.
If you eat out then this is a great deal!

  • +1

Nooooooooooooooooooooo! I bought $200 worth at AustPost earlier today, and I didn't look here 1st ! Another 5% (Coles cards) would be a doozy, already getting 20% (the gift card) + 25% (Entertainment book) + ~30% (Marginal tax off thru Salary Sacrifice/Meal Entertainment). Cheaper to eat out than cook at home. Although only a few restaurants listed in Tas, unlike the mainland.

  • Hi all,

Decided to ask the 'bestrestaurant' gift cards regarding using the entertainment book then/with the gift card. Here's their reply (nothing unexpected really)

"You are able to use your Best Restaurants card at any restaurant listedon our site. Please check with the induvidal restaurant in regards to theentertainment book as we do not run that promotion."

to avoid any disappointment, better call the restaurant to make sure first i guess.

  • how do you guys get entertainment book?

    • They have them at my daughters child care centre

    • You can get them for about $65 from charity and other fund-raising organisations. The organisation you buy it from gets 20% of the cut.

    • They are literally everywhere (non-profits, child care, staff organisations etc). If you can't find somewhere, just Google (http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=entertainmentbook.co…) and you'll find plenty of links to purchase via the web. You'll probably have to pay postage but the book is worth it.

    • Sometimes I have seen them in Woolworths (at the counter)

  • The Sanity deal was really timely!

  • Has anyone successfully purchased either gift cards??

I went to my local Coles in Caulfield and they didn't stock Sanity nor Best Restaurants gift cards.

Will try the city this weekend.

    • The Coles I went to had the Best Restaurant ones but no Sanity. They had the Itunes cards at the checkouts and service desk, but what they called Third party cards were on a hanging rack at the end of the cleaning isle.

  • Hoyts card is sold 20% off too.

    • thats at woolies

  • Just went to South Melbourne coles, no best restaurant cards. Called Port Melbourne, no cards. I've got to drive out to Essendon to pick up my new iPad (good guys of course!), so will try a few on the way.

Tried to list this as one of my flybuys My5 (i never shop at coles anyway and whenever i do its less than $50). They don't have it there. Tightarses!

    • Just came back from Coles (mitcham vic).. they have quite a few left… Used my Coles gift card (From the staff shop) and self checkout. The assistant lady was very patient. She also did tell me that 'you are not supposed to pay for a gift card, using a gift card, but since you have already started, i'll let you proceed'.

Just said 'oh really sorry and many thanks… :)'

Anyway, as stated above, managed to perform seperate transactions and ended up with 4 extra discount fuel vouchers; and points on my FlyBuys…

All that being said, the fun really starts to combine this gift cards with the gold cards :)

note: Tried to activate the gift bestrestaurant cards immediately and said have to wait till 12 midday the next day…

      • Rearding the card activation, some cards have already activated at the time of purchased., I bought some from the Auspost promo and got the same message to wait next day, so called up their customer service number as wanted to use that night and the card actually has been activated at the post office.. Maybe, it's the same for Coles. You may try to check card balance from their website to see whether your card is active.

  • For those wanting to buy the new 2012/13 entertainment book, I am currently helping my local church to fund raise some money. Each book cost $65 with heaps of buy-one-get-one & 25% entertainment offers. So, if you are interested, please let me know. I, myself have bought some coles & woolworths giftcards using the cards to buy the best restaurant card. Happy!

  • +2

I used the card, but I was the first customer to use this card at the restaurant. They didn't know how to use it. In the end, I showed her how to use the card. If any of the waiter/waitress don't know how to use it, tell them to do,
    1. Scratch the back and reveal the PIN number.
    2. Enter the card to the credit card terminal.
    3. Enter PIN number followed by the screen message.

A warning for people thinking about combining the Best Restaurants gift cards with Entertainment vouchers. I was worried whether restaurants really have to take that double hit to their bottom line. I asked the Best Restaurant guys and there was a bit back and forth via email before I just now got a straight reply: "No".

It would seem restaurants have some discretion on whether to accept the Best Restaurant card as payment. In combination with discounted meals they might not be overly inclined to do so. Since I only found 3 restaurants in Perth that would be of interest to me and none of them would be attractively priced with only the 20% off, I will pass.

Edit: there are plenty of other good offers in the Entertainment book of course. I will just stick to them.

    • By contrast, all of the places I've used the Best Restaurants card (North QLD) have accepted it in conjunction with Entertainment vouchers. Most places haven't recognised the card, however, so maybe this is why.

  • One of the restaurants in Melbourne won't accept the Entertainment book in conjuction with the Best Restaurants card. I wasn't in the mood to argue, so just went with the Entertainment Book since he scratched the code at the back. I'll use the Best Restaurants card elsewhere.
