Poll on Academy Awards Incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock

Interested on a poll on who thinks Will did the right thing by slapping Chris Rock. Would you have done the same?

Personally I think if he wanted to make a stand he should have stood up and walked out, not gone down the path of physical assault.

The thing is his wife is a nutter and his kids are also nutters but in this woke non-binary world no one can say it publicly these days.

The lunatics are running the asylum it seems

          • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: i wish i was a boomer maybe i'd be rich like all the ones i know laughing at the idiots in my generation more interested in rainbows and trannys in sport then trying to buy a house and actually build wealth.

            • -3

@Trying2SaveABuck: You're just lucky atm as SlavOz has used up everyones 5 downvotes.

              • +4

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Bahahaha bruv i dont really care Upvote/Downvotes dont make you rich - as i said my generation is full of idiots who think 'likes/upvotes' are important

If people like or dont like what i have to say esp woke idiots that is up to them it is a world of opinions when you mature a little you will realise the less you care about likes the more you care about sticking to what you believe in the wiser you are.

You are welcome down vote when you and rest of the woke idiots have your 'dislikes back' if that makes you feel better about your life then i dare say you have some srs issues…

      • +3

Staged in the fact that it is meant to court controversy - ratings for the Oscars broadcasting has been dipping for years. They'll try anything at this stage - think of the broadcasters shareholders! They - must - get - value!

  • +8

    Media stunt, 100%.

    • he took quite a big swing at him, would have thought he would react a little differently, but then again he aint a soccer player, maybe a nrl player

    • +1

i was thinking the same thing, but he never broke character after he yelled at the end. usually you would at least smile or a little chuckle, but got nothing. also the room was absolutely quiet and confused on exactly what happened.
the slap looked fake, but i think that is because the frame rate was not fast enough to keep up and investigate if it was real or not. i would really love to slow it down to 120 or 240fps and really see the slap, but it being at 24fps it can't track it and only really gets the before and after the slap and not the complete motion of the slap in its entirety.

      • Yea I thought it was fake, but saw another clip of it a bit more close up and looked pretty real.

    • +3

He did then go and shout 'Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth!' twice to Rock. That last bit didn't seem like a media stunt imo.

    • Smith did post an apology directly to Chris Rock on Instagram, stating how he was in the wrong, shouldn't have done it, etc. Not a media stunt.

      • +3

Lol… on “Instagram”. The basis for all of the most sincere apologies…

The fact he did it through a social media outlet just gives weight to the fact it was a media stunt. You only post that kind of shit to a public social media site for everyone to see if it is a media stunt.

      • I see the Instagram post is targeting fans and public so not really an apology but to save his own career. Apology should be face to face and direct to that person of interest.

    • +2

no way - watch the full uncensored version. Not even a chance it was a setup

    • People are pointing out that Chris Rock would have fell over or touched his face after. Smith's stance also looks rehearsed, like from an obscure martial art. Where he hit him also seems strange as it touched his mic.

  • +6

He got the OSCAR for being the King Dick, biggest tool of the night.

  • +2

Hey c'mon! Black Presenters Lives Matter!

I reckon we need a poll to decide if he actually hit him, looked like a swing and miss to me?

  • +6

    wtf are these confusing choices.
my answer is no, i wouldn't do what he did. Violence is never the solution or answer. I would show chris rock that i wasn't happy with the joke and talk to him afterwards like a man and address the issue properly.

  • +5

I wish it was Will Smith and THE Rock. Things might have ended differently

What a giant overreaction, he made a joke about hair for f's sake. There is plenty of other material to make fun of that couple about which would really sting, but somehow Will Smith got riled up over a comment about her hair?? I had just assumed she was doing it as part of an ageing gracefully thing, didnt even know about the hair loss until after The Slap. I've lost an awful lot of respect for Will Smith, he always seemed like an over-the-top but extremely chill guy who would be great to hang out with…now it's been laid out in front of us that it's definitely all a great big sham and just a public persona

    • "…now it's been laid out in front of us that it's definitely all a great big sham and just a public persona"
That's the scary part, I too bought into his fake persona…
One redemption is that he did it publicly instead of behind closed doors. On the other hand he is confident his influence would mean no repercussions from the law and public opinion.

I just watched his latest video on youtube where one of his close friends said that Will doesn't resort to having to use control using violence & anger.
      …She spoke too soon.

    • +4

I think if it was THE Rock it wouldn't even had started.

    • Will Smith got riled up over a comment about her hair??

They might have a history. Maybe Will finally had enough and wanted to publicly humiliate Chris.

    • +1

Wasn't right at all, but can sort of see how he'd maybe crack. Probably Will breaking from constantly being on the receiving end of how much of a nutjob his wife is and fallout of his wife wanting to sleep with younger men.
Also Chris did know about the medical condition and went for the low hanging rotten fruit anyway.

    • +4

It's weird to me how the media keeps referring to it as "Jada's condition", like she has some terminal illness and not just a hair-loss disease that affects millions of people

      • -1

just a hair-loss disease that affects millions of people

You might see it that way, but women of colour, especially Black Women, take pride in their hair and their appearance. I even had a girlfriend of mine, who also has Alopecia, called "GI Jane" this morning by some guy, and that's just one recent example. It might not be a big deal to you, but it is to us.

Women have been told what to do and what not to do with hair. Heck, we internalize the idea that men always want women with long hair because that's the ones who get shown on TV on all kinds of ads.

Ironies of ironies is that Chris Rock made a documentary about that issue called "Good Hair". Apparently, it's quite good.

Also, I have several autoimmune disorders, including severe hay fever, so I understand her grief. I get angry at people who trivialize my chronic pain. Sure, other people can have pain but, I have it every day in every waking moment. You tell me if it isn't some illness you want to escape.

        • Thanks for sharing. I can't believe some on here have the audacity to be negging you over sharing this.
Likely mostly ignorant men (or should I say boys) - of which I used to be one, until it started to become apparent to me how risky body image / appearance mental health and associated suicide etc is for many young women. I started having awareness raised from a close friend who has four daughters who span ages early teens to mid-twenties now and associated issues in bullying, body image, social media perpetuating it experienced, etc.
Abuse is in far more forms than physical. Words cause severe harm. Actually sadly I can believe it - unfortunately, many forum keyboard warriors are the biggest offenders who are prevalent on here.
The sticks and stones adage is long proven wrong with so many tragic deaths contributed to bullying, often over appearance.

[PS - loved Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, spent many hours with it and the Almanac back in the 90s and excel at geography in trivia nights still to this day!].

          • +1

@MrFrugalSpend: Honestly, even if I got 100 negs, that says more about them than me. But, thank you :) The torture we suffer isn't obvious and that's why people think women are/were "hysterical" - We didn't wake up and go 0 to 100 - we were always at 85-98.

I am very glad you can recognise the struggles and want to help raise awareness to it all. We always need people who want to help. And if male suicide rates can be seen as a big issue alongside female suicides, we are more than happy to help.

Abuse towards women is mostly subversive and can stay with us for literal generations. I know I'm not the only woman who has been told by all the women in my family to take much more care and notice of the abuse than my brother, male cousins etc.

(I love the history/time one myself :) It's such a good series and I've my other half that I will impose that and Horrible Histories onto our future kids :P )

        • Black Women

Neither of these things are proper nouns, not sure why they are capitalised.

      • This is very ignorant comment - I'm guessing you are not female and have little to do with young females. Mental health regarding body image and self confidence is a big issue.

Chris Rock's face won't be sore within a day - Jada and other sufferers, particularly young and female, for whom this is NOT a common occurrence as a percentage to the extent they need to shave their heads bald, will have a blow to their self-confidence and mental wellbeing that could last years. It was a terrible joke about a medical condition, not a choice she made.

Someone like Jada got to where she is due in part to her looks - She is in the public limelight and judged on her looks her whole life. Her subsequent baldness is something ignorant people will judge her on daily and would be very hard for her. This would lead to many people becoming a recluse, suffering mental health issues, but she still has to tell herself to come out in the public and face it. That joke would have cut deep. Much deeper than a face slap. In 2022 we should be way beyond thinking words can't cause people severe harm.

Read the bottom part of this article:

"Rock's joke came almost two weeks after hundreds of students staged a walk-out at a middle school in Indiana following the suicide of one of their classmates, 12-year-old Rio Allred. Ms Allred's parents told local media their daughter, who had alopecia, had been mercilessly bullied since her hair began falling out."

Australian Katie Hale, who lives with alopecia said "Why this incident is so particularly traumatic, is because it reminds you that this is still happening every single day," she said. "It brings up those little trauma responses that constantly happen, and I don't think people quite realise how front of mind this is in terms of people who've got alopecia, and that this is an everyday experience.

Our bodies are not public domain. They are not a line in a joke—especially when the transformation is not of our choosing. I’m a survivor of violence. I'm a proud Alopecian. The psychological toll we carry daily is real. Team Jada always. That’s that on that." - @AyannaPressley

        https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-03-29/chris-rock-slap-will-…

As for The Rock, it would have gone differently as he wouldn't have been such an insensitive ass.

        • +2

What makes this whole joke worse is that this isn't the first time Chris Rock decided to target Will and Jada - He made a distasteful comment about Jada being at the 2016 Oscars when she wasn't nominated, and that her acting sucked.

Rock absolutely knew better and everyone saying otherwise needs to look deeper into the issue and not gatekeep something absolutely no one asked to gatekeep - assault is not warranted in the 99% of the times has been done but, this is part of the 1% and I, for one, will not stand idly by and bleat.

Also, if people want to keep "Christian values" in this bs, go read Leviticus and the Commandments, and come back to me.

  • -1

lol you actually believe it was real

they are actors by trade, they do this for a living

also, the fake thud sound is a dead giveaway - should a 'slap' make a 'slapping' sound?

    • I think it was real, but Smith was only trying to determine the sound of one hand clapping and mixed up his C's and S's

      • He literally won the best actor award.
        Meanwhile

    • +5

Looks real to me. Will has nothing to gain by this embarrassing public display of childish behaviour.
It's appalling that the Oscars continued on the way it did, essentially condoning the assault. I hope Will learns the hard way through loss of future sponsorship and reputation. This cannot be allowed.

Not condoning Chris's joke either but the man handled the blow very graciously. I could not have done even half as well as he did.

  • +6

I hope the prick loses his token Oscar.

  • +9

I wonder if Will slaps the guys that his wife sleeps with?

    • probably, but not in the same way as he did to Rock.

instead of profanity it would of been giddy up

  • +2

Where is the option for "Publicity Stunt, the ratings were the worst in history, but now they are being talked about"

  • +6

Smith should have taken the microphone said a little speech on Alopecia awareness and continued to read Rocks teleprompter while Rock stood there doing nothing

  • +4

If all Hollywood stars were Will Smith/Jada then Ricky Gervais would have been slapped in the face a thousand times every time he hosted the Golden Globes.

    • yes, it would have been interesting if ricky gervais was the one assulted. I think ricky gervais is worth more than chris rock but uncertain how much ricky is intertwined in the cult celebrity thing. His past actions and words when on podcasts with Sam harris is he is a pretty level headed smart guy that hates Hollywood and its elete opinions

    • Yeah but don’t you know that white men can’t punch…

  • +9

Smith has become increasingly insufferable in recent years. He suffers from the typical Hollywood delusion that the rest of the world actually cares about his opinions.

    • +3

I realise celebs kids aren't the best yardstick, but you only have to look at how…odd and self-entitled the kids (especially Jaden) are, and you can get a glimpse at what the family must be like

    • I was initially confused and assumed it was scripted, every single comment treated it like it was real so i got on-board.

Assuming it was real, it was more shocking seeing his son's tweet after it the clip got plastered all over the news.

      https://twitter.com/jaden/status/1508295733551632389

      • Race to the bottom to prove who is a bigger twat.

    • +1

He is being publicly cucked and humiliated. Sad and pathetic.

  • +3

You forgot the option - No one cares about the oscars.

    • that would have melted down the server.

    • They do now…

  • +11

He should have been evicted on the spot .
He is a role model and had no right to act in a violent way teaching others its ok .
BTW he did it in the past at the Oscars and was tossed out .
His son a twit as well with his tweet of ' that's how we do it' .
Good to see Rock getting sold out shows now hehe :)

    • -3

Yes Will did the wrong thing, but Chris Rock should have been evicted first.
He got a bitch slap that will heal in a day.
The mental health damage Chris Rock did to young females suffering body image related mental health issues is long lasting.
In 2022 we should be way beyond thinking abuse is only physical.
A 12 year old girl had already committed suicide in the states for being bullied over her alopecia this month.

      See bottom of this article:
      https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-03-29/chris-rock-slap-will-…

    • Oh yes please - show your total ignorance by negging my comments raising awareness over young girls with mental health issues committing suicide -

Making fun at someone's expense particularly publicly over a medical condition that impacts a woman's body image is not okay - don't preach about violence / abuse without acknowledging that.

I'm not defending Will Smith's stupid response, nor will I disagree members of the family have high/entitled opinions of themselves, but Chris Rock shouldn't be painted as a hero in this either. They both made asses of themselves IMHO.

      Hypocrites

  • -1
    • +1

      Very interesting revelation

    • +5

      Looks fake to me.

    • +3

What would anyone gain from it being faked?
This does nothing beneficial for Rock or Smith

As for the academy itself, more people talking about the Oscars, after it had already started? Seems pointless.

      • +2

        This.

Rock maybe gains something from it. Smith could literally have tanked his entire career. I don't see why he would agree to be some kind of scapegoat (unless you really want to get conspiracy-y and say he only got his Oscar because he agreed to cause a scene)

I see no benefit to this being faked

        • +1

No publicity is bad publicity. The fact that people are divided and its the topic of discussion all over the world on all social media platforms and news channels just says a lot. It’ll have zero effect on any of their careers. If anything, they’ve become even more famous than before. Hey, it’s even talked about on Ozbargains lol

    • GrandWizardChatN*%$@ looks like a really reliable source……

      /s

  • Real or fake, you shouldn't do that.

Yes, the joke was distasteful, however, either grab the mic, talk about her illness or handle it outside and explain how that was not cool.

  • +10

His relationship with Jada has changed him completely and has seemingly broken him as a man. That red table talk they "graced" the world with was so painful to watch. Look at how broken Will Smith has become. The man needs counselling.

  • +2

Just shocked to see what Will Smith did. Completely overstepping the line with violence and swearing. I wonder how this will affect his career as a bankable star.

    • +2

Considering the show went on as normal after the incident, where any other person or a lesser celebrity would have been thrown out instantly, I'd say this won't affect him at all.

  • +1

Would he have slapped if it was Ricky Gervais instead of Chris Rock? Probably no.

  • +2

Rock is genuinely beloved by the stand up comedian fraternity - really looking forward to them going to absolute town to Will Smith for his narcissistic brain fart.

If he didn't like that lil quip about his missus I can only imagine whats going to be coming down the pipe for him (and her) given he's shown how sensitive he is to it. Dude has opened up the provebial can of whup arse on himself.

  • +3

Will Smith posted this on his Instagram. If this is all one big media stunt, it's a very elaborate one.

    • +1

Well that's it then. We can all get on with our lives. Praise the Scientology lords.

    • he spelt apologise wrong
      .

      • +1

but that is how it is spelt in U.S English

    • After he had a smashing time at the after party gettin' jiggy wit' it.

      • Na-na, na, na, na-na-na - probably not so much this time, probably either drowning his sorrows for damaging his career or talking to his lawyer and PR agents all night!

  • Where is the poll option "Who gives a f@$k?".

  • +4

    What an idiot, seriously.

  • +4

I never cared for him nor his weird-acting fake family. Care even less now.

He has a good PR team, but behind the scenes I can see him and his wife being psychopaths. Must have been a lot of tension between them for him to have elicited that kind of response.

    • +1

That's a good point - I half suspect he reacted how he did because there is tension over the issue at home - e.g. he is trying to reassure her he likes her new look but is unconvincing causing tension (Hopefully he can act well enough to convince her!? maybe not!). If that tension already existed, he probably reacted so badly after getting the side eye for initially laughing whereas in her eyes he should have been defending her honour and had a condemning look on camera like hers so he could speak to it later

Still think Chris was out of line with the joke tho - no matter how poorly we all think of Will and his family and his stupid reaction.

  • +4

It looks staged to me. I’ve learnt to not believe everything I see when it comes to the entertainment industry. They would do anything to stay relevant

    • What do they gain from this though? That would be cheap publicity and at the expense of Will.

      • +1

Don’t know nor do I care. I’m just puzzled as to why the slap that Will dished out on Chris made no smack sound as well as the slap is perfectly in sync with his feet stomping the ground which gave that thud noise. Looks like something me and my friends would do play fighting back in high school.

    • +1

Agreed. I only got to see it this afternoon and it looked staged.

Which only highlights the irrelevance of the whole awards season.

  • +3

I'm a big fan of Will Smith but he should have been escorted out of the joint straight after or during the break. It's fair enough if someone was still allowed to accept the Academy Award for best actor on his behalf but it's ridiculous that things were allowed to just proceed as if nothing ever happened. Props to Chris Rock for not retaliating and keeping his cool. On another note it's pretty clear that this world has gone bonkers.

  • +4

    Violence is never the solution

Funny that I don't remember this being the overwhelming comment during BLM riots…

    • +3

Shhh. You're not allowed to say that!

  • +1

I think Will had every reason to be upset, however i would never condone physical violence. and as such i do believe he was wrong in hitting chris rock

  • +3

Once the marriage is opened its destroyed for good. Holding on to love to a disrespectful wife who laughs in his face about her flings.. Will Smith is in turmoil.

    • +1

Entanglement, yo. Her limbs entangling another man's body.

  • +4

He got sick of everyone making him the bunt of their jokes after his wife has been confessing to getting nailed by his son's friends and arranging other fellas for a drive/fly by during family trips away etc. Fair enough to be annoyed after continual provocation but ultimately he accepted the cuck life style.

The Oscars was public enough and Chris Rock was small enough (physically) for it to all came to fruition.

He was wrong to do it and it hilariously exposed how two faced the social paragons that these celebrities' portray to be.

    • +1

This plus it's faked (or intentionally incited) publicity to try and keep Hollywood relevant as no one's watching those Epstein-adjacent, vacuous, self-entitled a**holes anymore.

Will Smith has been the butt of Hollywood gossip due to his wife pretty much openly cuckolding him; he lashed out at whomever he could but really it's about the fact he's a massive cuck and everyone knows it now.

Somehow he thought the best course of action to reprove his manhood and establish that he's in control of his marriage was to initially laugh at Chris's joke before immediately succumbing to his wife's b*tchy scowl and then hauling off to assault Chris like a well-trained lap dog following his master's commands. That behaviour definitely doesn't scream massive cuck at all.

Then to top it off, the hysterical, wannabe-ghetto gangbanger trash talk from his table… Will Smith has never been able to shake off his Oreo aura and this is just a further indictment of his fake blackness.

  • +5

The lesson here folks is marry a woman who doesn't cheat on you, make you a laughing stock and can take a joke.

    • Yes she caused this. For some reason no ones paying out on her.

  • +2

I hope GI Jane is ok.

  • If someone said that about me or my partner, especially they had a medical condition and it was out of malice, then yeah, they deserve a slapping!

  • Didn't realise so many ozbargainers read trashy, unverified tabloids. Yeesh.

  • Can we have a "No, Will did the wrong thing and I’d also not do the same, but then again I have done stupid things in the spur of the moment!" option….thanks :P

  • People are always making jokes at the expense of others on these shows, nothing new.

  • +1

Baldness is a sensitive issue for men and I imagine it could be another level of sensitive for women. It was a low joke, but a total overreaction. And it was not the only way he could react.

What smith has inadvertently done is to draw global attention to his wife's baldness and Chris Rocks joke. Jada will forever now be most notorious for her baldness. If he didn't react violently, the joke would have been forgotten.

    • Agree, I had no idea. I just assumed she was making a statement of strong black women or supporting cancer survivors (Figured if she had cancer I would have heard). Maybe even for a movie role but never occured to me she was losing her hair from alopecia.

Can't say I care, bold can be beautiful too, people put too much weight into BS like that. Just own it and stop taking yourself so seriously.
