Pretty sure it's a perpetual discount when renewing. Have seen it past 4 years every time.

    • +1

It is, you can also add an extra car at 50% discount I think - but that will expire at the same time as the original so do it asap into the 12 month period to make the most of it.

Also, no more stickers anymore - apparently rangers have a scanner/app that reads the number plate etc.

      • +1

Yea, shame it doesn't include conservation lands like Worimi (for Stockton Beach) which is $33 a pop.

Else, most people pretty unlikely to do 15-22 National Park trips in a year to make this worthwhile. Maybe for regular fishing or hiking trail users.

Kosciuszko National Park… Hold my beer

($29 per vehicle per day in Winter)

  • +4

You guys pay for entering national parks in NSW?

    • +4

Not to enter, it's to cover the cost of parking, which is usually $8–12/day. If you go more than 5–6 times in a year, the pass is good value.

      • +2

if it's $8-12/day and you only go for 5-6 times then you are still better off paying the parking, no?

        • +2

Sure, and if you go more often then the pass works out cheaper. People can work out which is best for them.

          • +3

@Heybargain: It’s good value if you go camping at national parks multiple time a year and staying multi nights. The $8/day starts to accumulates.

            • @yue01: Don't you have to pay booking fee now for national parks camping?

              • @Jackpot518: Yep you do but parking is not included in some national parks.

    • There are some parks you do pay entry such as Garie Beach or Snowy Mountains.

  • +9

Wish they could extend expiry due to covid lockdown .. can't travel last year

    • Yep, COVID-19 in the past two years really screwed up the value of these passes.

  • +6

I often go for a hike. I got this when renewing rego, used it exactly zero times. 5km lock down and later hikes to non-natio parks meant this was money not well spent.

  • That's a crappy saving.

  • +3

It is a digital pass now and I have no idea how they police it. Don't have to prove it upon entry and never seen any rangers going around scanning licence plates.

It's a good deal though, I always get the $50 one when renewing rego. Get your moneys worth many times over if you like going hiking/driving.

    • in SA, they police it by hiding near entrances randomly. Not hard to take photos as 4x4 hoon past at 100km/h on a sand road

      • +1

What if you are only going for a drive and don't get out.

    • All the ticket machines you enter your rego for the ticket. I assume the ranger walks round and validates the rego and tickets match and for the vehicles without a ticket they enter in your rego in an app.

I've never seen a ranger check, but TBH, I'm nowhere near the car. We might be at the park for hours, but only 10 min at the parking (get in/get out).

But I do see ranger cars, so I know they are out there.

I'm not one to try and run the risk, its $50 FFS, like what, half a tank of fuel, lol

      • rangers dont need to "walk" around.

these days they can just drive past and see ur vehicle parked…

        its highly automated.

Keep in mind only a small selection of parks are $12 a day. So would you need to do your sums to see when you would break-even and save.

Also parks don't change (much), and any infomation centres don't change as well, so you will see the same stuff over and over again. So you need to be someone who really likes the outdoors and NSW National Parks to get value out of this.

This offer has been availabe for some time, and we have been using it for years. We easily get our money's worth. Places like Minnamurra Rainforest & Royal National Park are both $12. Bundanoon is $8 and Fitzroy Falls is $4. All of these are easy day trips from Sydney.

My recommendation is to visit the parks before going for a pass, just to see if this is your thing.

FYI If you pay the rego via BPAY, you can bookmark the finish page and you can come back to to click the discounted parks pass link at anytime.

    • Interesting….I like the idea, but what’s the use-case?

I mean, the link (which I assume isn't generic), is probably tied to your rego. So, if you take up the offer while paying for rego, fine you get a year. If not, and you bookmark said page, do you go back and enter your rego and buy another 12 months, which is doubling up, or does the page ask for rego info, meaning others could use that link to buy a pass outside of the rego renewal?

Or do you mean that if the rego and pass expiry were not in sync, I could come back to that page when my pass expired. We had this issue. In the end we let the parks pass expire and just paid until rego came round, which was maybe a few months away.

      • I havent actually tested if the rego and pass expiry are in sync lol

but i am still able to go back to the page where you get the $15 discount even though it says "This offer is only valid at the time of registration renewal, and will be unavailable later."

EDIT: I just bought a pass with a bookmarked link. Payment went through. It takes up to 3 days for the digital pass to get issued so i wont see when the start/end date of the pass till then. The payment receipt doesn't say anything

        • +1

This might be a good idea in case you want to start at a later date than when you are actually getting your rego renewed. Please let me know if it actually works and I will keep this in mind exactly one year from now!

          • @ModBot: It works! i renewed my rego over a month ago but only bought the discounted pass today with the bookmarked link.

The pass start date is when you make the payment

So bookmark the payment RMS page not the actual parks link

            • @flipfire: Does that mean anyone can use that link ?

              • +1

@ModBot: No theres a unique URL token for the rego renewal receipt page which doesnt seem to expire so it can be bookmarked.

When you click Buy a pass it will take you to the parks page with your rego details filled in already.

                • +1

@flipfire: Thanks mate, I will keep this in mind for next year. I renewed my rego on the very last day just for this reason. I'd have liked to have the pass after a couple of months, but just paid on the day my rego was expiring. Pretty handy!

        • +1

The start date for the pass is when you make the payment. It's not the day your rego expires/renews.

So it may be better to withhold paying the rego until a time you want the pass to start. For example our renewal is mid Jan, so we delayed the payment till the last few days because we knew we were not going to any parks around Christmas. The year before I just paid the rego when it arrived (mid Dec) which meant the pass just sat there until mid Jan when we visited the first paid park.

    • can you share the link?

  • +2

Why are they called "national" parks when they are actually state parks, created and managed by the state, and you need to be in-state to buy the pass? Which is only good for one state.

    • Only the Commonwealth National Parks are managed at the Federal level.

The rest are all state parks, probably because land and resources remain with the states.

      https://www.awe.gov.au/parks-heritage/national-parks

      • That's the wrong answer to OP's question. This is a National Parks pass, but it only covers national parks in NSW. States are often charged with managing stuff in their state, and that's obviously the case here - having NSW rangers in places like Kosciuszko NP makes more sense than having federal rangers (which don't exist AFAIK).

  • Is there somewhere to lookup when the pass expires? I dont recall if i done 1 or 2 years last rego, cant find anything in the service app or on the site.

    • They sent you an email, if you haven't delete.

    • I believe the discount is only for 1 year passes with rego. You can buy 2 years direct, but no rego discount (but 2 years is already discounted and is actually cheaper than getting 2 x 1 year with rego discount)

  • What's the difference between All parks pass and Multi Park pass?

    • +1

      All-Park includes Kosciuszko.

      Mutli-Park excludes Kosciuszko.

  • +1

Anyone know if you can move from an existing pass?

I have one that probably has 6 months left, but can't see how I get one when doing my rego and get back the remainder of the existing pass. Anyone know?

  • -1

Digital Pass is quite inconvenience unlike the previous stickers on the windscreen. Personally, I think they need a bull guard at the entrance, if you haven't got the pass buy a ticket. But not all the park are the same.

    • -1

You obviously don't have one. I just said I have a digital pass, didn't show them anything and off I went. They have license plate scanners at some places.

      • -1

My dear sir how did you make that assumption. Probably the Park I go to doesn't have the license scanners which even the operators at the Park tells me the old way was better.

        • -1

Because you said it was an inconvenience?

What happened what you said you had a digital pass?

          Took me 5 seconds max

  • +1

So does this include Stockton Beach sand dunes?

Or do I need a separate Aboriginal land pass for that?

    • No. That's separate $33 for 3 day pass and $88 for annual pass.
