Good price, superseded by the new Surface Book studio so probably clearing them all out!

    • This. SL3 has been replaced by SL4 which is why they're all 49% off.

  • I love the Surface Pro and Surface Book form factor and used to be a big advocate. But after being burnt by 3 X Surface devices - I do not recommend.

    • +2

      how so?

      • +22

He kept handling them when they were on fire.

Microsoft uses batteries manufactured by SIMPLO. Approximately three to four years into the life of my 3 x Surface devices, they lost more than 50% of the full battery capacity and would shutdown immediately even if Windows said there was still 1 hour of battery remaining.

In the case of my Surface Book 2 - the batteries both in the base and the tablet then died. It would shutdown the moment the power connector was unplugged.

The medium to long term issue with SIMPLO batteries are well reported by users - easy to find with a quick Google search.

        • I've had a refurb SB1 for 4 1/2 years and can't say I've experienced as severe a drop in capacity. The tablet has lost quite a bit of juice but not nearly as bad as you've experienced.

          • @Dubious speculation: There's a reason why Surface Pros went out of fashion very quickly with corporate/enterprise despite there being a lot of interest/energy early on. Lack of in-house repairability/service, battery issues, random stability issues, etc.

    • +2

I've had 3 surface devices now, all worked well. My SB2 has been with me for 4 years now, but upgrading because of this deal :D

      • +2

I have the Surface Book 2 it's its working rock solid after 4 years and I was about to grab a Surface Laptop Studio but I think I'll grab one of these instead given the price.
        Great post, thanks OP :)

    • -2

Yeah had similar experiences with the early surface models. Ssd and gpu died and it's a pita and high chance of cracking the screen trying to fix it. Really wary of buying M$ products now

  • +2

looks like they don't have thunderbolt

  • This or the recent OLED Lenovo Yoga 9i?

  • +1

I've been waiting for a good SB3 deal, and this is way better than anything I expected. Thanks OP!

  • +1

superceded but still a great deal nonetheless

  • +2

    Waiting for 20% off code

    • they'll possibly all be sold out before that happens

  • Some great prices here. They also had the Surface Pro 7 i5 8GB 128GB for $700 as part of this sale. All sold out now though.

Also just be aware that you won't get a tax invoice for your purchase from the Microsoft eBay store. I've purchased from them before and they won't provide an invoice, even when requested.

    • I've always used the receipt from Ebay for tax and never had any issue claiming it back on tax, if that's what you are trying to do?
You don't need a receipt for warranty because as soon as you login to your MS account for the first time and add it under your devices, you'll see the warranty details (begins first time it's used).

      • I was able to get a GST invoice from Microsoft. It is just an image with poor quality but should do for GST refund at the airport. Disappointing that Microsoft can't provide clear invoices though

        • You can't get the GST back at the airport anymore if you are bringing it back with you now, that finished recently.
Take a look at the Australia Frequentl Flyer website if you haven't seen the changes.

    • These have a high defect rate. The one I got from work had a white bright spot known as a "mura", screen freezes and camera hangs during Teams calls. About to send it back for warranty. And quite a few of my colleagues have similar issues. Someone mentioned 25% defect rate and I will tend to agree. This is the second surface pro I am about to send back from different generations of the product.

  • Always wanted on of these, too much complaints regarding the hinge and switching between table/laptop mode and gpu though.

  • This is an amazing price. I had the SurfaceBook 2 for 1.5 years and loved it. Pretty good for decent gaming too. Battery life is definitely a concern after some time so I got it replaced within the 2 yr warranty and sold it on ebay

    I bought one these (I7, 512GB/ 32GB/GTX1060ti) yesterday.
The CPU isn't as blazingly fast as the Ryzen Surface Books (see previous deal), but the thing still runs like a dream.
For me, the big reason for getting this was the beautiful case combined with the ability to run modern games at 1080p. Just played a bit of Cyberpunk 2077 on it.
I think you can probably get around the same performance in a dowdy looking $1500 gaming laptop, but the case and keyboard are premium, it has tablet mode (which I don't think I'll use very much), the screen can be turned around for gaming, and the screen itself is fantastic. The 32GB of ram is also a standout, and will hopefully give me a little bit more future proofing.
Also when reading online reviews, I had to remind myself they were reviewing this model when it was over $4000.
    Ordered yesterday, arrived today.

    • How’s the fan noise?

      • Not bad at all. Even some reviews show the fan noise of GPU under load is suprisingly good

  • Does their 60-day return policy (if not satisfied for any reasons) apply for purchases on their eBay store?

  • Great prices!

SB3 is good… love the functionality of detaching to a tablet, drawing on the screen with a pen and a healthy CPU and GPU combo when docked for Graphics and CAD work.

Although we have had overheating issues with our SB3 (and the SB2 prior to that) and OLED screen burn in about 18 months in. Thankfully we had the Microsoft extended warranty and they swapped both of them within 3 working days for a new one. So we have outlayed ~$4.5k for the SB2 and have received 1 x SB2 and 2 x SB3s under warranty for ~$14k worth of hardware. Don't know how they are making money with this!

    • I think you're getting mixed up. The SB2 and SB3 don't use OLED displays.

Not sure how much has changed since LTT did a video on it a year ago, but Windows ARM looks rough and I'd rather spring $300 for a M1 MBA

  • And here I am on the Surface Pro 3 :)

  • Interested to know if you can still use the trade-in feature on the eBay store as opposed to the online store?

    • I would like to know too. HeHeHe

  • I am struggling, could anyone give me some advice? This Surface Book 3 15" i7/32/512 is a very good price.

I bought my Surface Book 2 15" i7/16/256 in Nov-2018. It is still going strong apart from the once in a while dropping out from connecting to my dual monitor.

I do not like the SB Laptop Studio at all. So, should I go for this upgrade? Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

There is hardly any difference in performance but the battery life is much worse on th SB3. I had the sb2 for 2.5 years and the sb3 for 2. No way I'd buy one again for retail price. The CPU performance and constant overheating are a pain to deal with. The build quality and screen aspect ration were really nice. Now I use a m1 macbook 16 and performance and software OS stability is much higher. Hard to go back to any Intel CPU powered laptop now

  • My SB3 provided by work has been constantly cpu throttling. Frankly speaking, I won’t get it as personal laptop.

    • Same, this is standard behaviour. The CPU in these is very inefficient and has poor performance at low power but cannot be cooled in the form factor at high power and therefore overheats. The SB concept is fine, the intel CPU is crap. Constant throttling and bad battery life (expect 4 hours just on office tasks). Somehow the SB2 with the 8th generation CPU had much better battery life and the performance is hardly different.if you have the SB2 don't bother upgrading

@qvinto: Thanks for your reply. No more SB3 for me.

Unfortunately, there is no way I could change over to a Mac. While my SB2 is still doing well (touch wood), I might just stick with it and see how much longer it can last.

        Thanks again, very much appreciated.

        • No worries, I'd wait for the laptop studio 2 version with an alder Lake processor. That would be a substantial upgrade performance wise. Unfortunately it has a smaller screen, but maybe they will also release a larger version. I need windows as well and am lucky enough to have two laptops but won't like my current zbook so may change to the laptop studio 2 if it has the right specs

    • That's ok, as the Surface Book is no longer being made. It has been replaced by the Surface Laptop Studio which is far superior from a performance, ports, cooling and form factor perspective.
Although I personally love using my Surface Book 2 as my daily driver, it's time to move to the Surface Laptop Studio, for me.

Glad i got in on this a couple of days ago as it looks like the high end SB3 is sold out. I received it this week and its running great so far!

  • bugger, the higher spec one is out

  • No deals for the SB3 with RTX3000 it seems.

For those intersted, not all items in the post are out of stock.
This is still in stock at time of posting this and incredible value at $1320: Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 13" i7 16GB 512GB - Sandstone - ANZ
    Here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-3-13-i7…

    • +1

Thanks, just bought one. My surface pro 3 (i think like 7 yrs old now) is still going. Hopefully these Laptops are as good quality. My screen is jittery now, but still working really well.

      • Which did you buy?

      • Good upgrade, you'll definitely notice a huge improvement from the Pro. 3 performance :)

  • Can surface laptop be over clocked?

  • Is this not better value than the 13" Surface laptop?

    MSI Prestige 14 A11SB-626AU - i7-1185G7 / 16GB / 512GB / MX450 - AU

    • The deal breaker on this one would be the full hd screen

      • full hd = good battery life

        • Discrete graphics = bad battery life

          • @brawndo: discrete graphics + full hd = ok battery life but at nearly 1400 a Macbook Air would likely rise it
