  • Can someone recommend a smart watch for small hands (7yo)?

      • Maybe for older kids =)

samfisher5986 - it sounds like this comment is tinged with sadness from years past. !!

The Mi band (xiaomi) is pretty cheap and both my wife and 10 year old wear them everyday. No issues after daily use for more than a year

    • +1

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/690931 (still available on JB HiFI for a similar price) or https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B083NLBZK6 isn't too bad but the dial is a bit longer.

    • Vivofit Jr 2 or 3

Or Amazfit Bip (can sync using new user profile for child on Zepp app)

      • Those vivofits Jr look like cheap junk from 10 years ago

        • They have basic features but are pretty durable with about a 1 year battery and decent reward/adventure integration on app.

          • @ShortyX: Trying to avoid using a phone. Too much screen time already. Battery seems decent it it lasts a year

            • @SAU: They have to earn the rewards and adventure unlocks with steps so that helps. 🙂

Also, you can resell them once kids have outgrown them. They probably hold their value better than the Chinese brands. Good luck!

              • @ShortyX: I replaced the battery on my son's one and it died soon after as it was no longer waterproof. Garmin had nothing to offer in terms of how to re-seal it after replacing the battery - you cant buy a new gasket. YMMV.

                • @uncyspam: Usually you can reuse the seal, you just need to make sure that it doesn't get pinched and you need to grease it before you put it back in with waterproof/plumbers grease

    • Be careful about giving such devices to kids. We got mi band 6 for my son when he was 8. He broke it within couple of months. It's not so much about how cheap these things are but they are not meant for rugged use which is required for that age and broken screen can cause unwanted injuries. And it was certainly just an added distraction. I will defer to get another one for couple of years and will just stick with regular waterproof rugged watches which are more suitable for kids.

      • +4

Yeah I don't know why a kid needs a fitness tracker anyway really, they just need someone yelling at then to gtfo and play

        • My kid helped himself to my old Mi Band V5 when I upgraded. He's taken a real interest in how many steps he does each day (high numbers, not surprisingly for a 9 y.o). I wouldn't buy him one but I won't take it off him either.

    • My 7yo has the Soundpeats Watch 1 now for 18months. He loves it. Great battery (lasts 3 weeks), has HR monitor, steps counter, alarm. Got it on sale off Amazon for $30something. Fits his wrist perfectly. My 12yo’s Xiaomi Band 5 was too big for the 7yo. Time goes off after a few months off by a few minutes but a quick sync and all good. Also the band strap loop broke after 2 months but that’s easily replaceable.

    • My 9yo daughter and 6yo son are now using these a few different coloured versions of https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-pulse-lite-smart-watch-cl… Previously to Kogan watches they used the vivo fit jr. I have found for the kogan watchs quality is a bit hit and miss. My daughter had a previously had a similar model which stopped charging 2 months. So we ended up with a credit from Kogan fairly easily which I used on this model. For $20 to $30 you can only expect so much.

I'm sure the Chinese Government are super interested in kungfuman's daily activities.

The US is trying to stop China from emerging as the top superpower, not because they found actual evidence of spying.

          • -7

@clubhonda: did I say anything about spying? because I dont' see anywhere where I said that.

          • -4

@clubhonda: That may be true, and for a good reason. Would you like to live under the CCP dictatorship?

@[Deactivated]: 1.4 Billion people do currently. Most are pretty happy with their performance the last 25 years to lift most of their populace out of poverty and providing security and prosperity to the people as opposed to billionaires ("Western Oligarchs"), massive corporations and corrupt politicians.

              • -8

@bchliu: Do you think 1.4B people would still be happy if content / information isnt censored? i.e., most of the people in question dont know any better, if they do, what can they do? not every one has the financial backing to move abroad.

                • +3

@[Deactivated]: Lol. Most things aren't as censored as you'd think they are. They actually don't censor Ukraine situation, Winnie the Pooh, the Letter Z or anything stupid that Western media comes up with.

Sure, pain to get on FB, Twitter, Instagram. But most of the 1.4B people are content with their own homegrown versions of these. Arguably, some of these equivalent apps are way more advanced than the western counterparts (eg. Wechat vs Whatsapp - with WeChat being a commerce channel with EFT payments).

                  • -3

@bchliu: Ukraine war or Ukraine situation? sounds like you are a CCP yourself.

lets see you send an image of Tiananmen square tank man to your mate over wechat :D

                    • +6

@[Deactivated]: Ukraine war. Russia invaded. No one wants deaths on all sides because of political lies. China's position on this is complicated because they are "friends" with Russia and they are also Ukraine's biggest trading partner. So unless China is stupid, they wouldn't piss either side off because there's no benefit to them. What doesn't get mentioned is the many plane-loads of civilian aid that China sent over to Ukraine.

Not "CCP" but a regular non-50c Chinese who has had enough of the bullshit that Western Media pushes out about China that many people lap up because it's nowhere near true.

Did you actually watch the entire footage of the tank man rather than the cut version that CNN and BBC keep replaying?

                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq8zFLIftGk

Here's the full unedited footage. It's also the reason why "oh they can't ID the tank man.. because we think he's dead" - when the reality is, he was taken by his friends to safety after the encounter with the tank platoon.

Reality is a bit more disappointing than what the MSM makes it out to be.

                      • -5

@bchliu: So where did tankman go after the massacre?
                        2 scenerios,
                        1. Dead
                        2. Kept quiet in China, or abroad.

Regardless of what happened to him, the truth is that CCP needs censorship to keep in power. Because if people had the freedom of choice, they'd be toppled.

                        • +1

@[Deactivated]: Lol. What are you? a kid? create some false dichotomy like "It's either Aliens, or it's God"?

You keep talking about CCP having censorship. Have you noticed that maybe western Mass Media ALSO performs censorship? like.. how often do you see that full video of the entire tankman to also include his mates urging him to go away? Because the ending destroys their narrative about some lone Chinese martyr standing up to the tanks with a mysterious fate afterwards.

How about the Media showing how bad Ukrainians have had it in their war, with their people dying etc. Everyone hates seeing other innocent people die and we all feel for all the families who lost their loved ones. But have you seen the same levels of coverage done for the wars against the Middle East? The people who died in Iraq, Iran, Libya, Yemen, Palestine from Western military forces? No.. They're branded as Terrorists and any information that is covered, is usually banned from being shown on prime time to stop people feeling sorry for these "brown people" of another religion.

What about Facebook, Twitter and Youtube banning all of the Russian channels and media (and Chinese ones to a lesser extent)? They do it under the guise that it is "Propaganda" but they also tell a reasonable side of the story with a lot of evidence behind them too. Is this not censorship because it doesn't correspond to the Western Narratives?

Think you might need to grow the hell up and actually look at different perspectives as opposed to what gets shown to you via standard media channels. What you call "Censorship" in China is basically the same levels of Censorship everywhere else - under a different guise doing the same thing really.

                          • @bchliu: Of course I keep mention censorship, this discussion is entirely on the hypothesis of if the 1.4B of people in China would have a different view if they know any better, or tasted freedom.

And I never mentioned the above social media sites are not censored. In fact, I get quote annoyed with filtered comments on FB. But at least, we can choose what we digital content we consume. Let it be censored, political, religious. If you don't like FB, then use other platforms.

You seem to be getting a little upset with this, would this be because you are not used to so much freedom of speech? You know, your views about China can be freely expressed in a western world.

Just because we've pointed out your regurgitated lies and BS, I think it is you who is denying the "Freedom of Speech" (which is not even guaranteed in Australia as part of the constitution).

The west censors just as much as China does. That's a fact whether you are willing to accept it or not. The only difference is that you are given a false perception of "Freedom" when your own government does as much, if not more than China to survey you and keep you under control.

                    • @[Deactivated]: The Ukraine situation would include:

@[Deactivated]: Actually, I think I'd rather live in a CCP run country than an American run country.

It's lifted millions of of poverty while America's poverty levels increased (while the rich got richer)
It has a universal health system (rudimentary but it's there)
It has a welfare system (since 2007, China has run one of the world's largest means-tested forms of basic income, known as dibao (short for “minimum livelihood guarantee”))
It's at least trying to take care of ALL it's citizens, not just the rich.

I'd much rather not have to choose between them, but I'm afraid that we'll all have to. Thucydides was right.

Talking about spying, US was caught spying on multiple nations including their allies. Foe example, they were spying on personal phone of German Chancellor. NSA has access to every Australian's data through the 5 eyes treaty. They have always done that and they are still doing it. Huawei and ZTE had nothing to do with spying, it's all to do with slowing down China's economic growth and taking over US as the world's largest economy. The next 15-20 years are going to be interesting as the global power order changes/shifts from West to East.

Here is all the evidence you need
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

        • -1

That's such a low IQ stupid comment. "show me where you installed your backdoor so I can go software patch it and stop you from spying from me"

Governments don't talk about what they do to each other for obvious reasons, but not obvious enough for you.

          • +1

@Blitzfx: So the governments need no evidence to prove anything? That's how they have literally destroyed millions of lives in the Middle East because there was no need for justification from them, nor were they liable for the Hague on the obvious war crimes committed.

Maybe the low IQ is exactly you for believing all the nonsense shit coming out of them.

Furthermore - there's literally tens of THOUSANDS of IT Security companies in the world from many different countries that has access to all different types of equipment and methods to prove this - if it was true. So far, none have come out with anything substantial to prove this case. In fact, you too could easily prove it by having their equipment being scanned and packet sniffed at their internet ports for anything suspicious. Every telco in the world will have this onhand and yet, no one has come out to show this?

Snowden on the other hand.. came out and demonstrated PRISM. So we shouldn't care about that then?

            • @bchliu: US may / may not have info. And if they did, only to the senators would be privy to it, who do not have clearance to disclose state secrets. How would you know they don't already have evidence? How do you know they don't already have PRISM2 or equivalent?

I don't have any info to believe or not believe what they say. Just because I'm pointing out your shit logic doesn't mean I'm endorsing their behavior or agree with their policy.

Thousands of IT security doesn't guarantee shit. None of them discovered stuxnet despite being out for YEARS.

Snowden is irrelevant to your logic that no-evidence = doesn't exist. That's about as intelligent as the Nazis assuming their Enigma wasn't cracked just because there was no evidence.

              • @Blitzfx: That's the point about making a claim: If you make a claim that someone has committed a crime or have done something, then it is up to you to prove it. The burden of proof is with the one making the claims. In this case, it's NOT for China or Huawei to prove their innocence because of these accusations without evidence. (even though Huawei has already open sourced their code and made it available to everyone to check).

You can't claim that "just because we can't prove something, it doesn't exist". This is no more logical than the old witch hunts to accuse old and widowed women to be witches without evidence and for them to prove they aren't witches, they need to be murdered in the river to see if they float or not.

Snowden came out with loads of evidence. Wikileaks came out with loads of evidence. just because you don't like what they have shown, doesn't mean it isn't evidence that shows exactly what the west is doing in destroying privacy and security.

Hundreds of "thousands of IT security doesn't mean shit"? You saying that these same people who "doesn't mean shit" isn't doing their jobs properly by exposing vulnerabilities and help with security isn't up to the job compared to a single company Huawei? You realise how dumb and stupid that statement actually is? As I said - ALL traffic going in and out of a network can be captured downstream from the device. This is how security teams find leaks / hacks / malware because data NEEDS a medium to go through (ie. Network / Internet). Not to mention the amount of alleged data being stolen - the Telcos, IT and security departments just aren't doing their jobs then to see tons of traffic being leaked out to China somehow without them knowing about it.

Unless you're one of those idiots that also believe vaccines have 5G inbuilt that can transmit information magically back to a source, then what you're saying is just utter verbal diarrhea.

Please don't waste people's time with utter conspiracy theories without even an ounce of knowledge of what you are talking about.

                • @bchliu: I can equally criticise them for making that claim, but yours is typical pro-CCP propaganda bullshit I frequently see called out in the apple daily. It's clearly evident you know nothing about how the CCP operate their propaganda machine.

Michael Hayden has commented on hard evidence. The heavily bipartisan Senate has also unanimously voted to ban sales says a lot about what they have been shown behind closed doors.

CCP frequently demand to show evidence so they can catch the mole / patch the exploit rather than deny claims, often on topics which have overwhelming amount of evidence of various kinds, which indicates that it's probably true.

Snowden's leak isn't done by hackers. Literally using your own example against yourself. Their backdoors have been around for years and none of the white hats discovered it.

isn't up to the job compared to a single company Huawei

Your snowden example is running circles around your shitass logic. None of them discovered it and it took a whistleblower to do their job. You think that just because there are thousands of experts means that they will absolutely find something? How do you come up with your probability that it is 100%? You're just pulling shit out of your ignorant ass.

Unless you're one of those idiots that also believe vaccines have 5G inbuilt that can transmit information magically back to a source, then what you're saying is just utter verbal diarrhea.

Yeah and you can't even form a single coherent piece of logical argument. You think 1000's of experts = guaranteed detection.

Please don't waste people's time with utter conspiracy theories without even an ounce of knowledge of what you are talking about.

Spoken like a true fool who knows nothing about opsec nor national cybersecurity. If you spent more than 1-second googling the CCP or Math Probability, you wouldn't be saying such stupid comments.

    Thanks OP! got one.

  • Yep, notification work on iPhone.

  • Huawei's smartwatch and band etc. do not work with Oneplus well, Bluetooth connection disconnects frequently

    • Mine with Oneplus 7pro is alright.

For any of these - worth a look at this youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDQzzyQFYQs - reviews the heartrate, steps, oxygen counters etc against professional grade equipment and will talk about its accuracy compared to other similar models.

  • Huawei is good.

  • Does it come with NFC?

    • +1

No NFC. If it had 1 it would almost be perfect.

  • Does this have an always-on display or is it like the Honor Band 5 where I have to move / touch it to see the time?

    • +2

Does not have an always on display

      • saved me $70, thanks.

        • I just ordered 1 for my mum. She was using a Mi Band 5 that had served her well over the years but it was time for a change to get something that looks a bit better.

Thanks OP got one. Ever since the sanctions on Huawei, I started to support Huawei.

  • Got one in the last sale and had to return due to
Step data not syncing with Google Fit (some third party solution exists but clunky).

If this is not an issue for you then it's a good little tracker. Also battery lasts about 5-7 days at most not 14 days claimed.

  • Great Deal, be waiting for this for a long time. My P30 Pro will be happy to pair with this gear. Thank you for sharing.

  • I've been using this band for about one year. I got it at around 65 dollars from aliexpress. I'm very happy with it.

  • Can you replace the strap? I hate rubber straps.
