  • I was looking at getting one of these or brass monkey. Realised that they only operate up to 5° Inclination(up to 45 degrees for 30 minutes). Often need to park on closer to 10°At relatives house. Looking at another brand now with greater inclination ability.

    • +2

How do you find that information out? Curious as it isn't listed in any of the manuals I found.
What are you looking at buying instead?

    • Brass Monkey frudges have a 3 year warranty as opposed to these which have a 2 year warranty if that helps your decision. i have a 35L and a 75L Brass Monkey Frudges and they have both been awesome still after 2.5 years I even got the big 15 aMh battery and they work well together

Thanks OP - grabbed one for a camping drinks fridge

I have a Brass Monkey and it's okay. Not sure how this will compare but if it's similar, you might be surprised.

  • Couple of drill batteries in series + smaller solar panel + car should get you through a weekend..i think!

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/294857115383?hash=item44a6da86f7…

Also… 18kg empty … Assume this doesnt include the battery.

    • Be careful with using the quoted power rating when doing the calculations with that panel - I can't see how it would possibly achieve the rated 50W with only 170mm * 230mm of solar panel area.

Using 1000W per square metre as the top-end best power density you can get from the sun, and assuming 100% power conversion efficiency from the panel (for now), you're only going to be capturing about 4% of a square metre with that panel's area, or 40W.

Once you factor in (best case) 20% efficiency for that panel, you're down to less than 8W instantaneous power. Now factoring 6 hours of maximum sunlight in perfect conditions all day (probably high-end estimate here), and you put only about 48Wh back into your battery.

Not saying this panel is particularly bad, just be careful using the rated specs for your setup, and don't expect 50W out of this one, even in the best-case setup.

      • For sure. That panel will be rubbish. Just the first cheapy I found, just proof of concept.

But this thing duty cycling 45w, even 8w will keep the battery ticking over for a while.

Ill try and find the panels i have. Got em for about $19 at xmas time to run pc fans on my inverter. They give out 20w. Perfect.

  • Are these the same as Brass Monkey? Do they take the same battery? I assume so but it's hard to tell from the Jaycar site

    • +1

I would guess that they are made by the same 'Alpicool' company, just a different brand name and slightly different outer case - it looks like the same control panel and battery

    • +1

They have the same looks and feel as the brass Monkey. Seems to share the same component as Brass Money. (Compressor - LG).

Here is a write up on Brass Monkey, may be an indication of what the Rovin is about.

      https://campoutdoors.com.au/brass-monkey-fridge-review/

      • This model doesn't have an LG compressor, they have a WOMA compressor.

        • Is that bad?

          • @tunzafun001: I'm not sure, but at this early stage it seems to be doing a great job in the 30L model

  • I had my generic brand glacio died after 3 years.
Now not sure to buy this one or wait for Dometic sale. Can’t see much review on this one….

Thanks OP. Brought from the Jay Car eBay store with additional 5% using PLUSA5, plus another 3% via Shop Back GC. Cheers!

Can you return to a Jaycar store if brought via Ebay (for warranty)? Or do you have to send it back?

    • Send it back.

From the bottom of the Ebay ad:

How to return an item purchased on our ebay store
Items purchased through our EBAY store can only be returned via mail at your expense to our head office at 320 Victoria Road Rydalmere, 2116.

      • Ouch.. big 18kg box via post…very ouch..might go local then.

Where can we find size and weight specs?

    Edit: Found them here

Does this unit at 45W use less than the 30 Lt. @ 60W running at same temperature in same conditions long term (24 hrs)?

    • +1

      Darn good question 😊

  • Use the code PLUSA5 for a further 5% off. Brings the price down to AU $246.05.

    • Good but only for ebay Plus Members, others could try the code SAVEAPRIL for $10 off to bring it down to $249 delivered.

  • Still available from the Jaycar website for anyone that missed out! I grabbed one after missing the eBay OOS.

Yep just clicked and collected from Springvale Vic some in stock. Powered up 20mins and let’s see how cold it goes, seems to be a great little unit for the cash. Runs from my ozbargin gooloo power bank as well with the 15v output to ciglighter adapter.

      • My Click'n'Collect hasn't said I can pick up yet from the Crimebourne store, ordered last night.

That's my next thing to grab, that's one of those power bank/jump starters yeah? I've purchased atleast 5 regular powerbanks from OzB sales in the last 12 months.. 😅 Barely touched the 40,000 Romoss brick but it's there when I need it, but now sort of regret getting one of those bigger/fancier jump-starter powerbank units instead.. 😔

        • +1

I never got the notification, so I rang them. It was all ready to go. Old mate gave me a spare 12v to gooloo output, which was great service.

Had the fridge running for 8 hrs now was running on dc for 6 hrs and just bought it in. Seems to run well on dc. Temps seem to be a little bit higher at the same setting with a temp probe in the fridge, but otherwise runs well… will give it a good test this week and leave it running. It is a little bit noisier than an Engle plastic 45L but otherwise pretty good.. not as solid but hey it’s not $1200 either.

2 year warranty the guy mentioned.

          • @angryasian: I think you can tweak the displayed temperature up and down a little to fine tune it as they are just roughly set at the factory - you certainly can with the Brass Monkey version.
Have a question for you: does the door make a proper seal with the body on this unit? Some of the Brass Monkey ones left a bit of a gap when closed

            • @King Tightarse: The seal is crucial. If there is a gap, return it.

              • @tunzafun001: Ohhh Kingy!

How's your Mammoth Flexizone going? 😅

I managed to snag this from Jaycar directly, picked it up yesterday! Not bad, considering the $50 voucher we have, paid another $20 roughly (compared to the 37L Mammoth) for another 13 litres, given your one looks way better and arguably works better. Although, bluetooth and wheels/handle seems handy!

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Haha its going well but getting a bit cold to use it here in Vic now
50 litres sounds good. It would even be useful as an overflow freezer sometimes although I am puzzled how the compressor can work like that as it is higher than the refrigerant lines. It's a mystery! Lol

            • +1

@King Tightarse: Ok will check tommor regarding seal. Seems to holding temp ok .. had it running with a temp prob inside

Cosy 21 degrees insulated home though

      • Not sure how many hours to cool the fridge to maintain the temp if you have pre freeze everything before and when driving.
Which type of gooloo did you get?

  • I just got mine. Why do you think they put the compressor on top causing it to have an odd shape where you have to reach in and around under the compressor to get to your cold goods at the bottom?

  • Impress with the shipping 4 days to reach Perth. But the delivery guy carry the box side way. Hope it’s not impacting the compressor.
My previous fridge was using woma compressor and last under 4 years. Not sure how long this one will last.

    • Make sure you wait 24 hours before starting it, to be sure that all the refrigerant and oil drain back correctly

      • +1

Thanks for the info. Yeah on the manual it says wait for 6h … but probably will leave it 24h just to be sure. cheers
