After M1 who else wants intel fire dragon Chips?

  • +13

DO NOT BUY NON M1 MACS

    • Can I buy M2?

      • can you find one?

    • PLEASE ELABORATE..

  • +3

On one hand it's an Intel…

On the other hand, it's cheaper than the Studio Display.

  • Soldered SSD but upgradable ram hmmm

Just my two cents, been a mac user for 12 years. I own a Macbook Air M1 and Mini M1, my advice do NOT touch anything that is not M1

    • +1

I am a Windows/Linux user, and still rate both Os's as easier and more logical to use, however my primary home unit is an M1 Macbook Pro, which I use mainly for music. I have a dual boot Ryzen 7 PC next to it, I use for most other things. I built this Ryzen 7 for nearly $800 less than this, but with a 31" Acer Curved screen.
Also, I suspect that in about 5 years time Apple will stop updating software/Operating system updates for Intel based units.

    It's just not a good deal :(
I could see the value proposition if it was significantly cheaper than that is and Apple committed to X amount of years for further Intel support, but the reality is that Apple Silicone is better value full stop.

    • I understand it's tech that Apple is moving away from but getting a 5K retina screen sitting next to your M1 Mac (mini, studio etc.) isn't a value proposition. Not yet anyway. I recently bought a 27" iMac myself but opted for an excellent, used top spec i5 2017 instead and upgraded the storage msyelf. That's where the value lies for Intel iMacs.

Dont buy this, its a terrible deal.

  • This line was discontinued about a month back and annoyingly hasn't been replaced by an Apple Silicon variant. If you want a new 27" iMac this is probably your last chance for a few months. But as others say I'd wait until an Apple Silicon variant does come along but that'll be at least another couple of months, maybe much longer as they don't seem like they're in any kind of hurry.

  • Intel and 256gb, AVOID

  • +1

It's not worth it for half that price.

  • +1

Not worth it. Even for higher spec's it is a waste of money to buy Intel Mac's. I give them another couple of years before Apple stops supporting them!

    • That's not the way Apple (normally) works. This was launched in 2020 and only discontinued in March this year so I'd estimate 2026 before mainstream support disappears, possibly later. The late 2015 27" was compatible with macOS Monterey, just over 6 years later, and may still get whatever is released later this year. Don't forget, the 2020 27" was launched in the same year as the M1 Mac mini so their support timelines won't be far apart.

      • It's a lot easier to support hardware on the same basic platform.

A better comparison would be when they switched from Power PC to Intel. The last on the market was released on October 12, 2005 and the last OS that supported it was 10.5.8. 10.6 was released August 28, 2009. So just under 4 years from release there was an OS that didn't support it. 10.5.8 was maintained until June 23, 2011 though so yeah, almost 6 years, applies either way.

        • To be clear, I'm not advocating anyone buy a new 27" iMac, not unless it's a lot closer to $1500, but, on the other hand, Apple hasn't made it financially sensible to get a 27" 5K screen any other way. Even the base M1 mac mini and a Studio display will sent you back $3300+, and that's with the best education discount going. And you still don't get a keyboard or mouse.
