16GB RAM standard still seems insulting, even with the massive M1 advantages.

    • +9

      it's not insulting.

      • -1

Isn't Apple ram special like better than normal PC ram?

        • +7

not sure, but definitely better optimization than a windows laptop with 8 or 16gb ram.

        • -5

apple memory isnt at all like windows as its fast and fast swap to fast ssd, you can use 8gb and feel like you have 32gb on a PC

16gb means you hardly even use swap for 90% of daily uses

          • +3

@srhardy: M1 uses LPDDR4X 4266MHz RAM (34,100MB/s) at the end of the day swapping to a 6,800MB/s R/5,800MB/s W SSD (at least in larger capacities, lower capacity SSDs perform worse).

            It's not magical compared to contemporary Windows machines, e.g. my 2022 laptop uses LPDDR5 5200MHz RAM (41,600MB/s) and a 6,600MB/s R/5,000 MB/s W SSD.

The speed differences between RAM and even some of the fastest PCIe Gen4 SSDs is huge as you can see and swapping is not idea for performance or SSD longevity.

Unified memory of the M1 SoC doesn't make 8GB anything close to 32GB either, it just means that the CPU & integrated GPU communicate more efficiently and can share memory resources where appropriate (e.g. the GPU could use 60/64GB of unified memory if it wants).

MacOS is better optimised with its hardware and make a fixed amount of RAM go further, but M1 has been out for close to 2 years now and we know that 8GB on M1 =/= 16GB on Intel and 16GB on M1 =/= 32GB on Intel yet alone absurb comparisons like 8GB being like 32GB

        • +4

It's just ram but macOS uses memory compression afaik, so effectively the OS can do more with the same amount of ram.

          • @lychnis: Windows 10 also does memory compression.

        • +2

          Yea, it’s magic RAM.

    • Check out some videos online about 16gb vs 32gb. Basically 16gb is plenty good and 32gb is just for bragging rights.

      • +1

It's not so much about 16 vs 32 on its own right, but the price and other specs combined with 16GB.

There are workloads that can benefit from double the RAM no doubt.

        • +2

There are plenty of workloads where 16GB is fine and the reason behind buying a 16" laptop is to get a 16" on a portable machine. That is why 16GB is standard, as you wrote, and 32GB or 64GB is an option.

      • +10

Not bragging rights … it really depends what you do!

Most users will be fine with 16GB. There are videos which show the benefits of 32GB or even 64GB. Ever worked with a 300 Megapixel Image … or a 16GB Photoshop file … try 4K video processing and complex after effect renders. You will have massive improvements in speed. The videos that show that there are no improvements with more RAM are pretty misleading - but I guess when you work with the applications that require more RAM you will know this.

Most people will be fine with 16GB - but to say that there are no improvements to be had and it's just bragging rights is just incorrect!

This channel has a few nice comparisons to showcase this: Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx6cJkJzvhA

        • @mini_wombat
I am hoping to upgrade my old 2013 macbook pro (8GB RAM) and wasn't sure where to spend extra money. I want it for a lot of the things you mentioned. My laptop struggles hard, and always has really, when using lightroom and photoshop, especially with 36 megapixel raw files. Is RAM the best upgrade in my situation (vs cpu)? More storage is also nice, but admittedly I would probably store my photos on an external drive (at the moment an old school style drive, not SSD) so not sure if that slow things down more than the RAM? Any info is welcome, thanks :)

          • @Dan83: I am not mini_wombat :) … You have a really valid point that external drives really help the space issue. RAM is a good thing to upgrade for video and image tasks. I've seen 8GB M1 Macs really struggle under some workloads because the RAM was full and swap file was becoming large. Its pretty easy to have a web browser and an email client eat up 3GB or more RAM on their own (depending on how many tabs you have open etc). If there is always heavy swap use then the drive gets a lot more wear, shortening its life. So, RAM is a good upgrade option for people to work with large data like raw images.

            • @g1: Thanks and I'm not sure how to tag / reply properly :)
Thanks for the info RE RAM, perhaps I should look to put any extra money I can muster up to getting 32GB RAM then?
I'm really not sure how much overall speed is lost (for photo editing) when using an external HDD - do you know?

              • +1

@Dan83: Oh, I didn't mean for that to come across as a comment about tagging. I was thinking mini_wombat may offer you really useful information. And maybe s/he would be a great source for what you need. I still wanted to throw my 2c into the mix of info.
mini_wombat's yt link points to a really good channel to give you some data around your work flow. The 16GB vs 32GB RAM comparison is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx6cJkJzvhA . That channel also has a 32GB vs 64GB RAM comparison. There are a lot of comparisons around. I'd vote 32GB RAM for what you are doing.
For external drives, I can't comment on your workflow other than what YT reviews show on SSDs. The summary of what I am seeing from reviews is that external SSDs differ and some are better than others but some get close to internal drive speed. And, that's the key. Close to internal drive performance is amazing. I haven't been checking pricing for them. For a HDD, I haven't looked around.
mini_wombat may have a lot more applicable information :)
GL with your purchase. The M1 Pro Macbook Pros are fantastic laptops.

                • @g1: Thanks for the info. I'll check out those links tonight.

        • Yeah, I have a 64 GB mac for work and you can tell when its getting close to maxed out on memory.

          • @qazadex: Wow maxing out 64gb!? What tasks are you doing at work?

            • +1

@Dan83: Programming, in a pretty decently sized codebase. When I run lots of services together (for testing purposes and the like), it really puts the laptop through its paces.

      • My $2000 Lenovo x1 came with 16gb (2x 8GB DDR4). Upgraded it to 64gb (2x 32gb DDR4), I was originally going to upgrade it to 32gb as I kept maxing out the 16gb but during Black Friday sales it was only $252 for the 64gb kit.

I’m not sure what you mean by “checkout some videos online”, just check your task manager when you are doing a lot at once. More ram won’t make your PC run better unless you are using what you have already.

    • +2

16GB RAM standard still seems insulting, even with the massive M1 advantages.

Have you actually used one LOL?

    • 16gb in a $3000+ non-upgradable machine is definitely a slap.

      • +2

…Will walks off the Apple stage.

  • +3

When you see a deal on tech and are ready to say Officeworks price beat….

Theb realise …Oh this is officeworks ….

    • +5

But… can they beat their own price?

  • Such a good deal!

  • Can't be purchased online for those in WA it appears and there's no stock in any of the stores either

  • Can someone tell me why mac users need so much power? Is it only for video editing?

Cause most of the computationally intensive programs are windows exclusive (data crunching, cad, simulation and modelling software etc…) and the other half are games which mac cant do for shit anyway.

    • +4

Can someone tell me why mac users need so much power? Is it only for video editing?

If you do actual mac / iOS development with Xcode you will appreciate the M1X computing power at your disposal, especially when dealing with large code bases.

data crunching, cad, simulation and modelling software etc…

If you google, you will find such power hungry software also exist for the Mac. Some of them haven't yet been optimised for Apple silicon yet. They can still be run using Rosetta 2.

games which mac cant do for shit anyway.

      https://www.macgamerhq.com/apple-m1/native-mac-m1-games/

      • +3

Thanks to the power of Swift you don't even need all that large a code base to gain an appreciation for more computing power.

    • +3

Please, I have feelings too 😔

  • +2

I bought a 32 GB 1 TB of these for $5k at release… regret it, this model would have been fine I'm sure

    • +1

Isn't M1 Pro with 32GB about $4.7K retail? Did you get the M1 Max?

      • +1

Yes, in hindsight, didn't need it

        • Do you do much in the way of photo and video editing? I assume that would benefit from your extra power?

          • +1

@Dan83: Yeah I do and it probably does but maybe not worth however much more I spent

  • Has Amazon pricematched? https://www.amazon.com.au/Apple-MacBook-16-inch-10%E2%80%91c…

EDIT: Out of stock! But orderable.

    • silver is expensive only space gray is matched

  • What the the equivalent of this be in PC CPU and GPU?

    • -3

      I7-2700 and gtx680

      • +10

        Above is wholly incorrect.

It's difficult to compare as they are different architectures and purposes, as well as how optimised software is for them, but approximately:-

CPU is is pretty level against Core i9-12900HK in single-core applications. They trade blows in various tests and benchmarks with one being better suited to some and other vice versa.

This is not the case with multi-core tests where the M1 Max is a lot closer to the Intel though.

The 16-core GPU in the M1 Pro is thought to be 5.2 teraflops, which puts it in the same ballpark as the Radeon RX 5500 in terms of performance.

        • +2

Above didn't know that it was a joke

    • For single core workloads the M1 and M1 Pro are within 10% of the fastest AMD and Intel offerings.

It's a really good chip, especially for its power consumption.

I can't comment on the GPU.

  • -2

Oh I have apple gift cards and apple can't price match this. What can I do? It's a good price

    • +1

I thought you hated macs because you couldn’t use pirated software on them.

      • -2

Ha ha u remember me ah…glad I am famous. My apple balance is there so I got to use it somehow so this is a good deal isn't it?

        • I guess ‘famous’ is one word to describe you. Others would use other words which are more appropriate given your actions

      • -2

Not using pirated software as I am afraid of malware or virus. so yah back to apple, however I feel Mac os is less user-friendly than Windows. just my personal opinion.

        • Then surely you shouldn't purchase a mac

          • +2

@DanielYuuuu: Thank you for giving me negative vote for expressing personal opinion

            • @Mighty man: No worries bro, don't want you to end up not liking it after you made the purchase.

  • +1

Buy from Amazon you get 30 days to return.

    • An excellent lesson learnt the hard way.

  • +1

as much as i hate apple mac software i fully appreciate their hardware ( iphone/ipad owner) i used to put windows on my macbook air 13 few years ago during uni. but now their m1 does not support windows so thats kinda sad, personally i dont think a company exists that makes as high of a quality product (hardware) as apple as ive tested many window laptops and they just dont come close. dont pull razer out your @ss razer has the worst customer service and after sales service in the business. and with these new M1 chips razer is left in the dust in battery life and overheating issues

    • +1

I agree 100%, I always hear people around me say get xyz windows laptop, it has this much more ram or this many more pixels. But I'm yet to use a laptop as reliable as the Macs. It just works. They shit on competition in regards of performance, battery life, build quality, etc.

    • You hate the software? Like MacOS? Or just prefer windows for compatibility or gaming reasons?

I know what you mean. I’d be more inclined to switch to android if google made a high quality vanilla device.

      • +3

yeh i dont like mac os for not knowing how to use it fully, its limited capabilities when it comes to software compatibility, and most importantly also gaming.

fully agree with android statement, i was a Samsung fanboy since 2011 till 2018 when i switched to iphone as I wanted the best video camera on a phone, the video stabilization of any android phone does not even come close to iphone, the first 3 months i hated the switch but it grew on me, the safety alone was worth it, so much control on access and privacy with these new updates. i don't think i can go back to android anymore.

and yes not to mention the quality, if you know you know, hold an iphone in your hands and hold a samsung, your fooling yourself if you dont agree that iphone feels higher quality..

  • No instore stock anywhere in the country, though looks like it can still be ordered online.

I got mine in November. Is it expensive yes. Is it great. Yes. It replaced my 9 year old 2012 MacBook Pro with retina. If this last my 9 more years the $3k price tag is well worth it.

As a side note - although I haven't even remotely pushed it I still haven't heard the fan turn on since getting it.

    • I replaced my 2019 MacBook Pro with weird graphics issues that Apple said was normal behaviour with this.

Runs way cooler and smoother, have no regrets.

    • thats the beauty with apple, it really lasts if you dont game on them and need to update every 4 years

  • I still have some apple gift cards, will apple store price match this?

    • Last time I called them up (late last year) they refused to price match 14" or 16" models of the MacBook Pro. They didn't tell me they didn't price match full-stop though for whatever that's worth.

      • Sometimes if it's new model just put they won't, generally do up to 10% though over phone or in store.

  • The M1 chip in any of their laptops is a game changer.

The basic 13" Pro is fast, cool and the battery life unreal - capable of running a VC call 12+ hours (if you wanted to lol) … scary how running the screen, wifi, all the code of os, browser, codecs etc is pulling under 4 Watts.

To me that is the huge advantage for the new Macbooks

From my experience 16GB is enough for 100+ tabs and other random stuff. If coding / video work I would go 32GB for future proofing.

  • +2

I bought this last year and made the switch from windows to Mac. There are so many differences that get really annoying. Even copying and pasting. It looks nice but I regret getting such a good machine. I don't need any of that power. It does look pretty, but also weighs a ton which is expected for a nice 16" screen. Battery Life is awesome too although I don't need the battery life much these days working from home.
