Ouch “Layover at Nadi, Fiji for 17h 45m“

    • +3

I actually look specifically for these stopovers. I usually pack an overnight bag, and the stopover becomes a destination in itself.

      • +5

You can stretch out the stopover on the way over as well as the return leg. So you could:
        * Fly to Fiji direct & stay 7 days
        * Fly Fiji to Japan direct & stay 14 days
        * Fly Japan to Fiji direct & stay 7 days
        * Fly Fiji to MEL/SYD/BNE direct
The price should be pretty much the same as this deal (around $900). Duration of stay is just an example - it could be 10 days/20 days etc.

        • +3

Yeah, did something similar years ago flying China Air or something to Japan. On return I stopped over in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia and spent a week or a few days in each. Basically a free flights to those countries after my long trip in Japan. It was great.

      • Like your work. Although Nadi is pretty much slums surrounded by wealthy people resorts.

You'd want to extend it for a few days to go exploring.

        • +1

Nadi has local villages full of happy families surrounding the town. There's no slums.

          • +6

@shreddo: *This testimonial brought to you by the “Ministry of Truth” Nadi Fiji branch.

            • +4

@LockedUpLotionClown: No I used to work there and experienced the villages first hand. They have infrastructure like running water and electricity and roads so not a slum. The comment pissed me off thats all. Probably someone living in a crap suburb of a major city in Australia thinking their lifestyle is better.

              • @shreddo: I’m sure it’s great, and I’m sure they are probably a lot happier than the majority of us “privileged” rat racers as well.

I’d sure as hell swap the M-F 9-5 with wages just high/low enough to keep us from revolting for an Idealised TV Doco paradisiacal village with no worries in the world.

It’s just the way the comment read that’s all. Sounded very 1984 😂

  • SYD flights returning to BNE

    • same for the MEL flights lmao

      • Fixed now

    • Thanks for picking that up - fixed.

Has Japan even opened for tourist yet?

    • +1

Nope. But these flights seems to be for 2023, so pretty sure they should be open by then.

      • +41

they said the same for 2022 D:<

          🙅 wakatte kudasaaaaaaai

        • +1

I watch the Japanese news daily; the simple explanation is that they're (gov) very logical, but very nervous.
The only delays are "what IF…" scenarios.

They also have a LOT of pride in their healthcare system. So they'll want to be over-prepared for illness, especially for 'guests'.
It'll happen soon. Very keen to get back.

          • @MasterScythe: I heard opening up too soon won't allow the tourism industry to get ready in time and there will be no accommodation for people to book

            • +1

@lunartemis: They won't be fully opening up, so I doubt they are concerned about accommodation as there is already an existing surplus, even with a number of places still closed.

The government seems to be tip toeing forward with small measures. In the last few months it has gone from a cap of 5000 to 7000 and now 10000 daily arrivals (average daily arrivals pre covid was around 80000 and a quarter of those were Chinese). They will soon allow family members of foreign nationals to visit.

No large measures will happen before the 25th of July upper house election, although I could see them open up a pilot programme before this date as the population might be a bit suspicious of the Governments plans if they don't have any roadmap and it might start effecting them in the polls.

The Japanese Grand Prix (October 9) might be a good marker as I think they'll want some openness by then, but I could still imagine some cap.

    • +6

Nup, a good portion of Japan is happy with their border status and with an election coming up in July it's unlikely the government will rock the boat with any changes in the near future.

  • +4

Brave to book flights when they still seem adamant on not re-opening for tourism with no ETA.

    • That’s when you use your no-insurance

  • +1

Low chances that they'll be open this year, many discussions daily on the news here. At the moment I don't see how they can increase the cap until they change or remove the entry process at the airports. The capacity just isn't there. It's an evolving situation however.

    I want Japan :((((

  • My flight with jetstar to Japan in June was just cancelled 🙃

      Ur*

    • Are you one of the crazies, cos your statement is just full of paranoia? What breach of what international law are we talking about here? Have you heard of the term and concept of sovereignty?

    • +2

      is sovereign citizen

also claims to be able to direct the actions of foreign sovereign governments

      sees no contradiction

      very stable genius

      • +1

Thanks for the synopsis! TLDR: Numpty alert!

        • -1

          I stand by my claims

  • This one may be for those brave enough and/or have the right travel insurance. Apart from unopen borders, the cyclone/wet season for Fiji is in the early months of the year. You might get lucky but something to keep in mind.

  • Cruise lines have basically written off Japan for this year and till mid next year. My April 2023 Japan cruise just got canned due to uncertainty over opening up. RCL and celebrity canned the whole FY 22/23 cruise season

  • +2

    Sack Japan 2022.

Go Vietnam 2022 and Japan 2023/24.

  • 737 Max…

  • +2

    737 RIP

I wish aggregators made an option to exclude/include aircraft for this. It could be very useful in other situations as well - for example, I might want to fly on a350/80 or 787 for lower cabin pressure.

    • Damn you know stuff.

Does lower cabin pressure for longer flights reduce fatigue/jet lag?

  • Dang, no PER

  • So many direct fiji > japan flights, interesting, wouldnt have thought they would do that out of fiji

  • Just FYI - Fiji Airways will charge you for oversized baggage (ski bag) $55 each way.

  • So after 18th April, you don't need to do a pre-departure test to enter AUS anymore? this crap is confusing -_-

    HUH?
What happened to the "end of snow" as our warmunist friends try to tell us????

‘Never be fooled by alarmists’ who predict an event ‘forever and ever’
Sky News host Rowan Dean says we should "never be fooled by the alarmists" who grab one event and "predict it forever and ever".
Climate watchers have claimed 'one-in-100 year' rain could become the norm despite claiming Australia would likely become 'permanently dry' back in 2014.
"They told us snow would disappear by 2020 - they told us that in 2000, they repeated it as recently as 2014," he said.
