    You should still get the .au just in case it does catch on, and your clients start accidentally leaving the .com off their emails or URL when typing them in. This means setting up a redirect for the domain to your .com.au and redirecting emails, which is a PITA. I wish auda just made it so ".au" resolves the exact same as ".com.au"…

    Pretty much what Austria said.

    This .au is a free-for-all for scammers. The first 6 months the domain has a priority to whoever the .com.au / .net.au holder is as a priority 1. But you still have to register for it.

    You can easily make .au resolve to your .com.au site.

    EDIT: looks like Austria explains it in a below comment also.

  VentraIP has them for $8.67 for the first year. Don't forget if you've have a .com.au for a while already then you have a six month validation period to claim the .au, which I think is in September sometime. So no one else can register it before then.

    Came to say the exact same thing.. Fun fact - if your existing .au domain is contended, you have to pay forever, until one party stops paying - or an agreement is obtained somehow. Genius move from AUDA - to make money.

      All this is, is a money grab. Scammers are going to run rampant and companies are going to have to register another domain.
