How Do I Make a Dumb TV Smart?

It is a large TV with HDMI ports, still functioning well so reluctant to replace it.
Primary phones are Android with an iPad. What I want to achieve are:

  • Watch Youtube, even better if other stream providers;
  • Can throw / cast videos from phone and computer (Win10's cast feature);
  • Can play videos from NAS;
  • Play videos from USB sticks;
  • Easy operation for elderlies;
  • Desirable: has remote control

Chromecast? Apple TV? Raspberry Pi? Does Raspberry Pi have an out of box product that just works?

4K Fetch TV Mighty go reasonably priced used under $150 on eBay,..so it's a PVR with 1 TB hard drive to boot and of course I think has 4x tuners built-in to it to record upto 7x free-to-air channels at once

Fetch TV have there store on eBay and sell refurbished ones a lot cheaper then new, usually they are new as people return them cause there pissed off they need their credit card to setup a Fetch account, its only a once off $1 fee to setup online account the rest is free, unless you buy movies (refurbished comes with 2 years warranty) I've had umm 5 not one has failed so far, oldest 4 years old, the Mighty can get toasty don't leave anything on top

Oh they have packages you can add like Foxtel does, $1 a month you can signup to there movies package

(YES) Watch Youtube, even better if other stream providers; (yes,.. PLUS Netflix, Paramount, Stan, Prime, Youtube? to name a few but its not an Android box were you can add what you like its all builtin until they upgrade with more providers)

Can throw / cast videos from phone and computer (Win10's cast feature); (YES MAYBE DOUBLE CHECK for Windows cast CERTAINLY CAN SEND TO TV EXAMPLE YOUTUBE, FREE TO AIR Channels ETC FROM PHONE TO FETCH BOX TO START PLAYING, not really casting as Fetch is using stream from internet not your phone (which is better), IM SURE? ALSO HAS GOOGLE CAST BUILT-IN)

Can play videos from NAS; (YES IM SURE IT CAN depending on protocol of NAS)

Play videos from USB sticks; (YES 4K UP TOO)

Easy operation for elderlies; (100% EASY, BIG FONTS VERY WELL DESIGNED MENUS ALWAYS UPGRADING TOO)

Desirable: has remote control (YES AND ALSO THROUGH MOBILE APP CAN LOOK AT TV GUIDE AND SET RECORDINGS FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD)

WARNING: DONT BUY A TELCO VERSION THEY ARE LOCKED, PLENTY ON EBAY CHEAP, BUY OUTRIGHT FETCH TV BOX yes sellers hiding this fact

don't need PVR feature the mini version IS CHEAPER AGAIN 1080p but there is a 4K mini version also I'd personally go with a Mighty for the PVR side of it

Add a Mini to the MIGHTY and from the mini can control the MIGHTY TV GUIDE to set recordings basically they both are sharing the 1TB harddrive from the MIGHTY, yes mini can see the Recordings of MIGHTY like a NAS and you can play them from mini you can even share the Antenna signal so if a room has no antenna though not perfect anyway you can watch live streamed free to air channels also of course that's through internet

Can coonect Fetch TV through lan or wifi, 2 USB ports on MIGHTY, Bluetooth builtin for speakers or sharing music from phone to FETCH BOX

Lots of features I can go on all day, Fetch TV does have its little quirks but overall great system

Edit: the new Chromecast by Google is great also but between $80 on special to normal price from Google for $100 and I think plus postage

EDIT: can read both fat and NTFS formatted USB drives and USB harddrives also bonus (I actually havent tried a USB Bluray/DVD player ok on my things to test do list😁), well 4k movies wouldn't fit on fat partition anyway with what fat 2gb limit?

You can watch recordings on your phone, tablet what ever, through app I think only on same wifi/lan network too box is on

Loophole: Have a friend s share the one Fetch account between yas so share the subscriptions which start at $6 per packages, share $1 movie box, yes 2x Fetch Boxes at two different locations sharing the one account, but one has to use there credit card on the one Fetch account so best a very good friend as you'll be paying their movie purchases, if both have a good internet connection (prefably same internet company) one can watch each other's PVR recordings lolz

Umm can't think of anything else

      Now that’s a value for money explanation…👍
Is it easy to hotspot to these. We have a lot of data on our mobiles.
Bought Chromecast but impossible to hotspot from it, tried everything.
Smart Tv does it well tho…
      Cheers

I'm a real tight arse, literally and love finding ways/loopholes/deals too reduce my costs (I think most of us are when it comes to expenses), why Ozbargain is awesome

Firstly no way I'd pay what $65 or more for the NBN subscription, especially when it's just me using the internet, of course families would need the NBN because of data usage more so then speed

Ok here I go,… (my situation)

Optus has a deal for half price data sims, no contracts cancel when you want, I suggest going on the $15 5gb data plan (deal $7.50, the deal only 12 months but the deal keeps coming up on Optus site cancel one start another one to keep half price deal alive), yupz only 5gb data but it will slow down at 1.5Mbps after using your allocated 5gb data (same as Vodafone and Telstra $15 5g data plans) but no joke works ok mostly for web browsing etc through phone and works fine for one stream with my Fetch TV box (watching my Prime as example, cheap 4G portable battery modems can be had under $50, cheapest I got last was $20 for three, you could even use those 4G USB modems and plug into a USB port for power well they are cheaper (not sure if Fetches USB ports stay powered while on standby, anyway USB phone chargers are cheap) well you want it on so you can use the data for your phone and other devices, I've got a big Telstra mobile plan, 100gb actually but I'll use the data Optus simcard so not to waste my fast 5G telstra data while home, web browsing, here posting on Ozebargain etc I don't see any major differences, And if your into torrent downloading like me (torrent app on my spare mobile cheaper then keeping PC on 24/7, Note 9 512gb fits hundreds of movies lolz), or need to update Windows 10 etc who cares how long it takes just leave overnight

Few bonuses having a Optus postpaid plans data or mobile, Optus sports is free one example

Optus has Optus Subhub that's free also (for convenience have all your streaming services in the one place, payment for services come out of your one Optus account, discounts for more then one service) and there offering free Prime for 6 months on Subhub site, so that's Prime shopping, Video, Gaming, Music all free for 6 months $6.99 value, so already no Brainer

Ok I do know I have terrible coverage for 4G Optus at my place but the 4G modem can be moved around my home for best reception and i found one spot

after all I said above you might have a bad experience using Optus but you won't know till you try and there's no contracts so $7.50 is peanuts to try and use your mobile to wifi hotspot before buying a 4G modem

Free 6 months Amazon Prime deal (and actially other free deals) at optus,subhub.com.au

        • Which torrent app do you use?

        • +1

Thanks for sharing and the detailed write up.

        • May I ask what you use your Telstra 100gb for, considering you're managing to both stream and torrent download (not concurrently, I assume) using your unlimited, albeit throttled, Optus sim? I do heaps of torrenting, but don't need it fast, and am intrigued by your reduction from $65 to $7.50 setup.

    • Agreed. I just bought a fetch Mighty (refurbished) for $199 via JB Hi Fi. I'm sure it's brand new. Interface is fast and responsive. Great TV guide as well. Very impressed so far.

      • The Mighty/Mini boxes I think have been out for more then 5 years, they've been upgrading/improving the menu look since then, bigger fonts, style, contrast, colors etc I think they've almost perfected it, easier to see menu now on my smaller TV, well almost I'm old and blind

Ok while my brain just remembered,..

        quirks I know

If the Fetch TV box bogs all of a sudden to the point of freezing well some menus not loading/working, don't be alarmed I've worked it out the box is actually downloading an update in the background, annoying when it's recording something, this is were you need faster internet so the update gets done quickly, hotspotters suggest hotspot the fast data speeds from ones phone if your using my tight arse 4G Optus option/method I mentioned above

Umm should I get out of bed lol

    • +2

Thanks for this great writeup. I've got a Chromecast Ultra whoops Google TV with Remote, but the Tv Guide and recordings interest me - reminds me of back in the day when I used to have a Tivo.

You mentioned quirks… what are some of the major ones?

      • +1

Mentioned one above post, I honestly think that's it with quirks, it's been a progress over 5 years with updates for the Fetch TV boxes and I think they've ironed out all bugs now (can't even remember the older bugs)

I assume the only thing that would go wrong first with these Fetch boxes is the continuously spinning 1 TB harddrive but there cheap to buy, no (and I've tried) you can't swap it for a 2TB drive it will only recognise 1 TB but you can hook up lower sized drives and for boot, literally a SSD SATA 1TB harddrive lol to solve (as I have) storage space just buy another 1TB Mighty boxs, all recordings show in one list of recordings of all Fetch Mighty boxes, I also own a 4k mini yet to open it yet

There is a whirlpool thread we're people suggest features for the Fetch Boxes, try searching on Google for it or was that for Vodafone Android box

Edit: these boxes came out with a rrp price of over $450, probably still the same now but crazy to buy at that price when like I said Fetch eBay have these refurbished a lot cheaper with 2 years warranty and yes someone mentioned above also refurbished from Jbhifi and Harvey Norman etc

Again be careful buying a locked Fetch boxs off eBay actually the iinet Fetch Boxes is packaged in the same blue boxs packaging as retail, so specifically ask the seller is this a retail, non telco unlocked box

Cheapest used Fetch Mighty I got was for $100 and the New 4k mini with eBays coupons etc for same 👍😁

    • +1

      Holy comment Batman!

    • +1

Agree, have a Mighty and a mini. Great. Recordings off air are so simple and automated.
Warning. - some secondhand units are cheap because they are locked to an individual’s Optus account.

      • Anyone know how to unlock the Fetch Mini from Optus?

        • Don't believe you can. You might find more on that on Whirlpool.
Basically - there are two ways of getting Fetch - buy outright from
Fetch or a retailer, or get it for a few dollars rent a month as part of your broadband service.
Stop the service and the box belongs to Optus. It's not like a locked mobile.

    • Or buy a new TV? 🤷‍♂️

    • wow this is a good pitch ! cheers

    • gor blimey - that's the answer to every question I never arksed about Fetch (more or less than) Mighty !

      thanks - I guess - will there be a test ?

    • @italkdigital: username checks out

      • I was thinking the same thing

    • Can Mighty receive free to air without the aerial antena (e.g. streaming over the internet), and even more importantly can it record streaming FTA programs? I do not have working aerial.

Nvidia Shield TV is probably the best way unless you feel like researching other cheaper android tv boxes.

Then just get them a netflix or stan or binge subscription.. just join a family plan in the classifieds here on ozbargain.

    • family plan on Ozbargain never heard of it got a link?

Nvidia Shield TV there pretty cheap aren't they? Well haven't had the pleasure of trying one as yet, Vodafone Android boxes was the best I have tried so far well compared to the foxtel now box but there literally giving away the foxs boxes on eBay I wonder why

      • +1

sorry i meant family plan with stan, binge or netflix basically you join a group with 3-4 other strangers so you split the costs on the subscription.. you get assigned 1 profile usually out of 4-5 profiles.

yeah sorry ozbargain does not have a family plan well we do but its free :)

nvidia shield tv usually around the $240 mark or $189 for the base model which will be fine for you.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/694783

        • I was wondering offering/promoting a sharing family plan on Ozbargain lol

Edit: But just noticed you stated "join a group with 3-4 other strangers" is there somewhere to join a group easily with strangers? Well with strangers, I was assuming between family or friends, well safer who's name is the account on?

yupz why not share accounts especially with Netflix igetting so expensive 😅 but I hate subscriptions why a have a spare Note 9 512gb,.. torrent app works great on it, a lot cheaper then running my PC 24/7 👍😁

          • +1

@Italkdigital: you can share accounts if you mean like with 30 ppl and just give everyone the password i guess you could try that

I am talking about just joining a group plan with maybe 3-4 others or however many the plan can have

            if u go to classifieds

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/classified

usually some streaming services sellling there for group plans which usually makes you save half off

here is a binge classified looking for more

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/697248

here is a stan classified looking for more

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/690935

            • @AlienC: so ok there are people advertising to share accounts (between strangers),.. interesting thanks for that, though umm I have Prime and movie purchases can be done through app on TV wonder if as an account holder if that can be blocked, well wouldn't want a stranger going crazy purchasing movies while ones credit card is linked to account

              • +1

@Italkdigital: Yeah no that would be horrendous. Definitely don't share an account linked to your credit card like Amazon prime.

                • +1

@AlienC: Just share streaming services that don't do rent or buy and usually anyways you bank transfer your share of the group subscription plan to the leader or owner so I guess only they are at risk.

Yeah don't share your Amazon prime or other buy and rent services like Apple TV or YouTube.

    • I haven't used a Nvidia Shield, but I keep hearing it's the best off the shelf product to do everything.

      • -1

        I think it is.

It just has so much packaged in and backed by a reputable company so you have peace of mind.

You can get Android boxes for half the price though that should do most things.

But I think the hardware in the nvidia shield TV is also superior but I have not compared specs in a long time but it is geared to do 4k so yeah.

        • 1/3 of price… even 1/4 back in the day

      • -3

It's complete overkill unless you want to use it to emulate old console games, stream your PC games, or use it as a Plex server. A regular $80 Chromecast with Google TV is a much better device for 99% of people. I say this as someone with a Nvidia Shield TV Pro and a Chromecast with Google TV.

      • -1

It's good, and the main selling point over other devices is that the hardware itself is quality and the software is kept up to date. The issue I've seen with older Smart TVs and android boxes is that after a few years they slow down as the hardware is inadequate and the software isn't getting updated. Means that you miss out on newer streaming services as well, though we may well have reached the peak for that now.(PLEASE! No more streaming services!)

It's also been the best Plex player outside of a Windows machine I've used!

Aside from that, the main reason I bought it was that I can still use it if my old 1080p dumb TV finally dies. Whatever TV I get, it'll work with it and in most cases will play content better than whatever is built into the new TV.

My only issue with my Shield Pro is that a recent update put a massive ad banner at the top of the home screen. It promotes shows on all streaming services and I hate it so much. No, I DON"T want to subscribe to binge!

But the good thing about the Shield is that you can just load a different launcher and make the homescreen look however you please.

    • Yep my vote is for Nvidia shield also. Have 2 of these and one of them is on a smart tv, I still use the shield over the smart tv.

      • What makes the shield a better choice?

  • +22

Google TV. $89 jbhifi currently has remote.

    • +1

Does it not normally come with a remote?

      • +8

It does. I think he meant "Google TV. $89 jbhifi currently. Has remote."

        • "Google TV with remote, currently $89 @ jbhifi."

    • +6

Can't recommend the Google TV with remote enough. Older relatives (60-70s) can use it with minimal instructions and they don't come back to me with questions. The remote also controls your TV

      • This Google TV sounds really cool I'm going to have to look into that.

When I was looking into good years ago it was chrome cast, fire stick and shield TV mostly and then a bunch of off brand TV boxes.

      • what do they use with it? just netflix?

        • +1

They're streaming everything Netflix, kayo, binge, Disney etc

      • Do you have issues with your input button though? I've tried it on Samsung, hi sense, sony, bauhn and it won't work. Brings up the menu then flicks back out to the home page or I can't select the other input because if I press enter it just clicks whats on the home page.

        • No problems on mine or the one I just set up for my parents.

        • you have to keep clicking input to cycle through them and then just wait on the one you want

          • @MrBlank: Yeah i do. on one TV, the menu like just disappears after a few seconds even if im pressing the button. On the Sony, the menu stays up but nothing happens after i wait it disappears again. forget the samsung but also doesnt work. I always have to have the original remote nearby if i wanna play the PS

    • +2

I'm an "older" person, and I REALLY REALLY REALLY HATE!!!!! remotes.

The fact that you could use it with a (wireless) mouse by choosing selections that appeared on screen when you moved the mouse was one of the big reasons I loved Microsoft's Windows Media Center.

The thing about older people is that their vision deteriorates. I have one pair of glasses for close-up and another for distance. To watch TV requires the distance pair. To use a remote I've got to find the remote, then go find my other glasses, swap to them to find the tiny little button that's exactly like all the other buttons and has tiny text saying what it does, then swap back and forth between the two pairs of glasses to use the remote and see what its doing on-screen. With a mouse selecting from things on screen I just have to reach for the mouse, move it and click it with one hand by feel, and see what I'm doing is working by what happens on screen.

      • +6

Have you tried to learn the layout of a Chromecast/Google TV remote? There are only a few buttons. After a while your muscle memory will let you use the remote without looking. You can operate everything by feel, just like how your finger knows where the scroll wheel on a mouse is without looking.

Press the power button at the bottom left to turn the TV on. Move the selections on screen with the large round up-down-left-right pad on top. Press the middle button to select. Press the back button below it to go back. Control the TV's volume with the buttons on the right side. That's it.

If you drive a manual car, you don't look at the little shift pattern indicator every single time you want to change gears as after a short while it becomes second nature to do it by feel. A basic remote like the Chromecast/Google TV one is the same.

To use a remote I've got to find the remote,

Don't you have to find the mouse as well?
If you store the remote in a tray or box on your sofa or coffee table after you use it, you won't have to search for it.

        • +1

We recently got a smart tv, and after initially thinking the voice search thing was a dumb idea, we've started using it heaps! Especially to search within one of the apps for the show you want.

      • Have you considered bifocal glasses?

        • or multifocals ?

I'm old and have one pair fixed focus at arms length for laptop computer screen (for too much of the day)

and another pair multi-focal (distance to closeup) for everything else

          that works for me

I briefly tried a cheap (Zenni?) pair fixed focus at long distance for driving - but found I couldn't read the speed on my speedo or my GPS screen - so WTF they went straight to the pool room !

    • This. If your savy you can sideload most android apps onto it.

  • +7

Google TV or Amazon Fire Stick 4K, cheap enough, and have android os built in, plenty of steaming app.

I don't see the need for Nvidia Shield unless you want to game.

    • +2

I vote nvidia shield tv only because the UI is cool and easy for them to understand.

      Also 4k.

      • The Shield TV UI is exactly the same as the Chromecast with Google TV's UI because it's the same OS. Also the chromecast is 4K.

        • Oh well then I guess the google TV aka chromecast is the best option for OP then.

Nvidia only good for games I guess then which OP does not need.

          • @AlienC: Shield is extremely snappy, and smarter connecting to dumb devices. It knows what they are, and gives all sorts of setup options (and auto). Heck, people buy shield even for the remote

  • -1

    Easy operation for elderlies

You'll want Apple TV then, even if you don't use iPhones.

  • FireTv Stick 4K max

  • +3

I tried chromecast first but now use Amazon fire TV Stick. Works great.

    • +4

      I've had both too.
      I vote for Firestick too.
      Inexpensive and has a remote

      • Chromecast with Google TV has a remote too. Much better device than a firestick.

  • Send it to school.

If the dumb TV has HDMI-CEC you can use your TV remote to control some other devices that also have HDMI-CEC (I did this with a Raspberry Pi running LibreElec a few years ago). Also Apple TV also lets you program other remotes to control it so you could use the same TV remote to operate it (makes it easier for the oldies).

  • Curious:
Out of ATV, Firestick, Google TV and Shield, which is the best for Hulu (US) + Prime (AU) + Catch Up AU TV?

    • I think Google TV.

  • Android TV Box would achieve all those things and make your TV 'Smart'. NVidia Shield is the best on the market but also over $250. I recently got a Meecool KM6 android box for the oldies as it is under $100 and has Widevine L1 (google certified). Uses Android TV operating system which is fairly straight forward and easy to install apps like Netflix. Comes with a number of preloaded apps like Disney app, google apps including youtube, and casting apps. . It comes with a nice remote, but recommend an air mouse to use with these devices. Firesticks and Chromecast/googleTV do not have USB ports so would not be able to play videos from USB.

    • +3

Why didn't you just get the Chromecast with Android TV? Also under $100 and is even easier and better than some obscure android box.

      • Yeah Chrome Cast with Android TV is exactly an Android Box and allows sideloading of apps. Maintained by Google direct too

  • +1

How do I make a dumb TV smart?

Google Chromecast TV device…. As it comes with a remote.

    • Also known as "Google TV".

      • +2

Technically known as "Google Chromecast with Google TV"

  • +3

    Take it to school.

  • +1

    Amazon fire stick!

It has all the apps - netflix, amazon prime, youtube etc.

I was using it for quite a while to make my dumb tv smart :)

    • +1

Can it do 4k streams though like for YouTube and Netflix? Or is the hardware limited to only 1080p HD?

  • Google TV will do most of what you want. Better than a Chromecast alone.

I have a Google TV and its great. My wife uses it as well, pretty easy to use.

  • +2

Google TV with Chromecast has an annoying feature if you use Search. It often finds what you want, and wants to charge you for it when it might also be available free elsewhere. My older Bro wastes heaps of money this way. Otherwise it’s fairly good, but not as easy as Fetch.

    • +1

It shows you where it's available. If you then accidentally pay for it, that's a user problem.

      • Yeah, it just doesn't default to one you're subscribed to sometimes. Might be a setup issue, or perhaps you need to link them to your Google account somehow.

One thing that doesn't work though is Amazon Prime 'channels'. Content there doesn't even show up on the list of where to watch.

  • +3

I've been using a Xiaomi Mi Box S (International Version) for years and happy with it; has a remote, Google Playstore, and apps get updated automatically. Currently $89 on Amazon. Does anyone know if I'm missing out anything compared to the other media players?

    • Nah you're not, it's the same OS as the Chromecast with Google TV etc.

    • I pushed them to everyone I know, gateway drug into the world of smart tv, streaming, hdd etc.
Eventually stepped up to the cheap shield, then pro. They’re all amazing for their intended audience.

  • +3

I've been through about a million of these. For sure the best solution is Nvidia Shield or Apple TV. Best budget option is Chromecast with Google TV. These are the only options with the widest range of streaming services captured.

Anyone recommending Fetch TV or Telstra TV is smoking crack IMO.

    • Anyone recommending Fetch TV or Telstra TV is smoking crack IMO.

The Fetch Might has come a long way in the 3rd party content apps recently, all the major ones like Display+, Plex, Amazon, youtube, netflix etc are all there and you can cast youtube to the box as well.

Considering Telstra just purchased 51% of Fetch, Telstra TV is dead, so yeah wouldn't go near one of them.

Best budget option is Chromecast with Google TV

That said, I find this device is way quicker than Fetch TV to use for jumping in and out of apps.

      • Really Telstra owns 51% of Fetch? Funny thought Optus had a big share or owned outright Fetch TV, since Optus sport is baked into the Fetch box even my retail versions have Optus sport

Wouldn't have a link about Telstras acquisition

        Interesting thanks

Edit: there is also baked into Fetch TV boxs,..

Brit box, NASA, Ted, Vimeo, Plex free movies & TV, The weather Channel, Kidoole TV, AQUIRIUM, HAYU, Vivo, iwonder, ACORN, Youtube Kids, then the rest mentioned by posts above 👍😁

Now to mention Fetch TV is coming to Optus subhud (advertised on subhub webpage) what thar means I have no idea, well of course the Fetch $6 packages and and $1 movie package will get charged through subhub (that's what Optus subhub is all about) though I wonder if theyll offer any of the above Fetch packages for free like they did with Amazon Prime for 12 months and now 6 months free

If any Fetch retail users ever noticed, 1 month every year one gets all the paid packages for free to try for that whole month, I keep forgetting for me which month it is, so I usually find out when it's ending towards end of month lol

Tips and tricks,.. for slow internet users (1.5Mbps speed limoted tight arses like me, so not to experience pauses while watching live streaming shows/movies (rarely hapoens but), record ahead all your possible streaming shows/movies, speed doesn't matter while recording in background of course for the Mighty owners only with PVR

        • Really Telstra owns 51% of Fetch

It moves around a bit it seems.

  • FYI Google TV remote is pretty tiny, might not be great for elderly hands/eyes.

    • You can buy a grip for it, or print one yourself.

    • I don't find it bad… the Apple TV Remote however has been designed by Satan. Small, slippery, the easiest thing on the planet to lose.

Nvidia Shield remote (triangle one) is the cats PJs.

I bought an aliexpress grip, makes it a lot easier to hold. But you can pair it to Google TV app and use your phone as a remote, super handy when you got kids and can't find the damn remote most of the time 😂

      • My kids broke two Google TV remotes already.

You can set it as a quick tile shortcut (on samsung/Android), pull down the menu, click the 3 dots and edit buttons, there should be a tv remote there https://m.imgur.com/yV5Ngv6 . Makes life so much easier, I use it more than the remote.

There's also a kodi one but that doesn't open anything for me

Kodi with Seren add on. Kodi needs android TV box like Nvidia shield.

Imagine trying to get an old person to work Kodi.

  • Fetch mighty for the win here. We have a smart android TV and only ever use it for the BINGE app, as thats not (yet) on Fetch.

Otherwise, it seems geenrally reliable and althoughm it's not been jupdated in a while, it does everything we ask of it for recording multiple channels and accessing Amazon prime, our own recordings on USB, and Free to Air TV.

Can throw from phone (android) to TV, theres an app for remotely setting series to record and delete etc. Does 4k which mathces TV. Can enable bluetooth and watch TV on headphones without disturbing the kids in the evening!

    • Been getting frequent updates I think last couple days was last one, maybe I notice updates more cause of my slow internet (updates don't complete fully or get stuck) and yours is updating in the background properly without you knowing, go in settings/ device info

My software version is 3.28 Lockhart (remember seeing that on last update for sure), my Firmware is version 3.7.10302 if that makes any difference (that most likely like a motherboard bios), yupz my box says uptime 2 days 2 hours so then is when it updated and got stuck, actually had too reboot Fetch Mighty Box (happens on all my Fetch boxes), not sure just a reset intiates updates or maybe (but Google first) a Soft factory under Options tab in Device info

Do let us know your outcomes with yours like especially software version yours boxs are at

      • far kmee - at over 2000 words so far in this thread you sir are today's winner - go to the top of the heap !

well done - so if my Panasonic twin tuner PVR stops working, with the info you've provided, I'll plan to go straight to Fetch (my lunch !)

        • Thanks Sir 😊 👍 certainly happy to answer any questions on the PVR side of the Fetch Mighty 😁

  • we got a chromecast for the same purpose. works well.

  • My Nvidia shield 2017 controller just karked it, overheats while charging, doesn't seem to respond anymore (may unscrew it and replace battery but may have had some thermistor or other component fail)

Anway can still run the shield via a usb to controller

Will probably break out the Amazon Firestick 4K MAX (too bad we don't have the firecube here) and give it a shot

I think the Firestick 4K MAX ended up being super cheap:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/666761

    Base Price: $59.00
    Little Birdie : ($20.00) coupon
    Paid Price: $39.00
BIG W 15% Cashback that came through in April on Base Price Net of GST: 5910/110.15 = 53.63*0.15 = 8.05
    Final Price: $30.95

Anyway nvidia shield really beat out the TV's Google TV OS
