MSI Modern 14 Laptop B11MOU-644AU - i5-1155G7 / 8GB / 512GB / FHD IPS - $719.20 Delivered @ Microsoft eBay

830
BMNB20

Great price for an ultrabook with a fairly recent CPU, bright IPS FHD IPS display and aluminium case. The previous generation model was available for $599 in October 2021, but this one is significantly faster and has a bigger SSD.

i5-1155G7 4 cores / 8 threads
8GB RAM
512GB SSD
14" 1080p 60Hz IPS display
Iris Xe graphics
1.3kg

Similar to the popular MSI Prestige 14 deal from a few days ago. This one has 8GB RAM as opposed to 16GB and no dGPU, but the display has better brightness and the i5-1155G7 is almost as fast as the i7-1185G7.

  • I bought the MSI Prestige already from previous deal but does this have thunderbolt ports?

    • +1

The prestige is better, congratulations your purchase.

      If I didn't already have a dell latitude 5420 I would've bought one aswell

    • +1

      No Thunderbolt on this model.

      • The ad says it has thunderbolt. Bought it on behalf of a friend yesterday, guess I'll find out when it shows up.

  • Nice found

    • +1

      I dont see 69

      • "Nice found" is in past tense so implies there was a 69 at one point but no longer XD

      • -1

        Love that position LOL.

  • +5

    16gb and then its perfect..

    Weight with battery 1.3 kg

    • +1

Oh, does this mean single channel memory then?

      • +1

I think it most likely has 8GB of embedded (soldered) RAM, + 1 empty slot. I can't find anything concrete and MSI's website doesn't make things very clear.

Display brightness is unknown, while OP says it's brighter than A11SB, I can't find information on the panel specs.

    • What's the benefit of Thunderbolt?

Does this mean you can attach a EGPU to it?

That would be excellent as almost all laptops with Discrete Graphics have much worse battery life.

    • +1

Going off the photos and spec sheet on the microspft website this model only has DP, not Thunderbolt.

  • The Microsoft store says its 6.57 lbs (2.98 kg)! 1.3kg seems like what it should be though.

    • +9

      maybe thats when it's overclocked

      • +3

Gets even heavier when the ssd is full.

    • +1

Might be the whole product weight I.e. laptop, charger, and packaging. Still sounds a bit heavy even then

      • +2

actually it sounds ok. perceived weight is a fun effect. let's take my laptop, the gaming monster weighs in at 2.7 kg. when I take the laptop in my hands it of course feels heavy

when it arrived though, it was in a fancy box with the charger, then in another larger box, and some bubble wrap. when I got the package it felt light, even though it's laptop plus charger plus all the packaging! even though the package was of course heavier than the laptop itself

that's all because of change in density. laptop is super dense, as it packs a lot of weight in a small volume. package isn't dense, as the volume is much bigger, but very little added weight

        • Mate, that's all well and good, and we thank you for your dissertation on perceived weight, but it says nada on how ACTUAL weight goes from 1.3 to 3 kg.

          • +1

@timwog: it's called um weight gain, and happens often during lockdown

probably boxes with these laptops spent 2 years at the warehouse watching Netflix eating KFC and naturally got a bit over average BMI

    • +18

That's the weight after a Windows Update (data has mass!)

      • That's why you need a OneDrive subscription!

Save your back, let Microsoft carry all those bits for you.

    • That's the entire package weight including the box. 1.3kg is the laptop weight

  • is body and cover made of alloy aluminum or plastic ?? so only one slot for memory ?

  • +1

    current gen CPU

Current? is this not last gen?

    • You're right, I'm a bit behind the times!

    • +2

      MSI Ancient not Modern

      • +4

Did you know that "modern" art is defined as 19th-20th century?

        • +4

Somehow I don't think computers are as timeless as art pieces.

  • should I wait for intel Gen 12 cpu ?

    • 12th gen comes with performance/efficiency cores, very similar concept to how mobile chips are currently made. There's not many comparative reviews though, its supposedly better in battery performance.

      • There's reviews coming out of the new Dell XPS 13 plus running i7-1280P and the few test I saw show massive difference and more power then Apples M1. Efficiency and battery life not sure but it might be worthwhile to wait for new Intel 12th gen if you need the performance. Though most people using light productivity work and browsing wouldn't really be performance deprived with the current 11th Gen Intel i5/i7 G processors.

      • +2

Nah, 12th gen is a disaster already because Intel couldn't balance the temp on those hybrid cores. P cores get hot easily, then the CPU decides to throttle all the cores and loses performance.

        • Only on the higher end stuff. Alder lake still is a dramatic ipc improvement.

    • +2

Well I heard next gen better than this gen. But it will cost more! You may refer to this post into year infinity if you want.

  • +4

8GB RAM ruins the deal. If it was 16, I would have bought it today

    • +9

      how about tomorrow?

      • +7

Needs to be 32GB for tomorrow

        • You change as fast as a w…I meant a wombat

          • @ntt: Last time I checked, wombats don't wear clothes

You clearly meant to say waterblommetjie.

            • +1

@Zackeroo: at least we agreed on something

    • Only Single Channel RAM though, so poorer performance. I'd pickup something with 32GB built in LPDDR5 preferably, rather than a single 32GB module, since it will run cooler and faster and use less power.

      • +1

Also 3200 ram speed makes the iris xe much slower compare to 4266.

    • +5

      This isn't gumtree

  • Good enough to run Dota 2 @ Native Res?

    • If you want mild eSports on ultrabook then look for an AMD. The only point of choosing Intel is Thunderbolt.

  • This or the Acer 5 aspire deal from the other day? - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/696631

when will windows laptop producers wake up and make a macbook air competitor, nothing touches the macbook air nothing, i wish i could run windows on it tho

    • You can

    • Mate this is 1/2 the price of a base model MBA, and better for users that require 512gb, windows or 16/9 ratio. Also has a larger screen and less bezel.
I use a base model MBA as my daily at the moment but would still consider something like this.

      • How would the screen compare to the MBA? 1080 isn't as nice as a 2k laptop screen

        • at this size resolution matters very little. however Macbooks are much brighter

  • Thank you, bought one, taking the bet that there's a free ram slot for upgrade.

    • It only comes with 1 slot, but you can replace it with a single 16gb. Letting you know just incase you're buying a single 8gb stick.

  • What’s all this “modern” stuff? Is it a Microsoft ecosystem or something?

  • Any opinion on comparing this with the Huawei MateBook D 14 with similar specs except for the older CPU? They are selling at the same price.

    • +1

The matebook feels more solid but the screen is dimmer I think. Also more prone to overheat

      • Thank you mate.

  • 8g ram laptop shall be banned

    • How old am I thinking 8gb is heaps???

  • Does the screen open up 180 degrees?

  • A stick of 16gb ram is only $80-90.

  • Hi, what is the warranty on this laptop?

    • Things to consider
      1. form factor 15.6" vs 14" - Intel laptop has a better screen but slightly heaver and its touch screen
      2. arguably better performance on the Intel i5 vs i7 and more RAM but its unfortunately non-upgradable on the Intel
3 bigger battery and two year warranty on the Intel
      4. Better I/O on the Intel (has two Thunderbolt 4 ports)
      5. MSI build quality sucks (personal opinion, i purchased a MSI GS66 Stealth for $2700AUD and it had clicking hinges and plastic parts started to snap off on the front bezel after having it for only two months, terrible battery life considering it had a 99wh battery)

I'd pick up the Intel laptop anyday
