Get over it mate, everyones tired of hearing about it.

      • LOL @ the negs and positives :)

    • +8

Let me guess, the staff gets first dip on the items ala Tricky Dicky Smith.

To be fair, there would have to be at least some perks to the job, just to offset the perpetual embarrassment of truthfully answering the question "Where do you work?" :p

    • Tricky Dicky

      Ahahahahaha. Lol'd.

  • +1

Update the TITLE it says AMD Quad core on website?
    Are they all AMD?

    • +1

Yes, only AMD Quad Core laptops according to the ad.

      • it says featuring not Quad core only. I would say the promotion is for all AMD laptops.

        • That is how Harvey Norman likes to word it; definitely only quad core AMD included.

      • +10

HALF PRICE LAPTOPS featuring the super fast AMD quad core processor, couldn't get more specific than that!

        • +10

What Im confused about is if its AMD only laptops then why exclude apple ? they dont make any AMD laptops ?

        • +44

HN doesn't know anything about computers, that's why

        • +36

There are lots and lots of people who have absolutely no basic knowledge about technology and need to be spoon fed…the only thing they know about is Apple (Not dissing people who use Apple products). Having it clearly written down will probably stop 80% of idiots asking if Apple is part of the promo.

        • +8

@JLove: Your comment reminds me of this lol.

  • +16

what apple device runs on amd processors?

    • lol none

    • +11

      Intel-ligent pickup

    • +2

      the apple MADbook …

    • It just covers there arses really. Some apple laptops have AMD GPUs and I know there are a lot of people who would try argue their way to getting the discount on that.

    • +1

      AMD = Apple Made Device

  • +27

    lol u amd

      • +5

        u derp.

According to the link you provided, this is what Harvey Norman says about that laptop:
" Features a AMD Quad Core processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 1GB Graphics Card, DVD burner, 1.6" HD LED Display and Windows 7 Home Premium."

1.6" HD LED Display seems legit. Always wanted an AMD quad core computer with a 1.6" screen. xD

      • +2

if only it was as reliable as a nokia

      • +11

Awesome pixel density. Suck it retina!

        • UHD Tetris FTW! :)

    • +4

  • Only AMD quad-core laptops

    From their facebook page:

We don't like leaving things half-done, but… we had trouble getting past half the price on our AMD laptops! Available in stores ONLY, get a laptop with an AMD Quad-Core Processor and pay only HALF PRICE!

    • +3

No AMD sucks, Bulldozer couldn't even knock over Sandy Bridge yet alone Ivy Bridge…

  • +1

are AMDs any good compared to Intel processors? And what is the equivalent to intel i3, i5 and i7? I'm not very tech savvy yo lol

    • +6

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+A8-3530MX+APU - for the $1700 HP lappy ($850 half price)
      http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-2630QM… - for the base I7 CPU

I cant see any deals at all from this "50% off sale"

      • CPU benchmarks aren't everything… if you buy based on that you wont necessarily get what you want.

All AMD A6,A8 products will easily beat Intel in graphics performance so depends on what you want to do with your PC.

Battery life is as good on these as well.

        • +1

          "CPU benchmarks aren't everything…"

          In AMD's parallel universe, i.e. 2003-2006.

"All AMD A6,A8 products will easily beat Intel in graphics performance"

Oh noes. They have superior IGPs… run Intel stockholders, run!

Too bad they annihilate AMD in every other aspect.

        • +5

Most (all maybe?) these laptops with quad AMD processors have dedicated graphics, so your point about their graphics performance is pretty irrelevant. They get smashed head to head by their Intel counterparts in their specialised craft and that's all that really matters.

        • Point about graphics is not irrelevant for 2 reasons, firstly on battery both Intel and AMD will run off the IGP and secondly, all these with discrete have dual graphics giving better performance than the same GPU on an Intel system.

Specialised craft? Like I said it depends what you use your PC for. If you love big spreadsheets go buy Intel, if you want to play games and have better video quality then AMD are a better option.

        • -1

If you want to play games then why buy a laptop in the first place? Buy a console or desktop PC. As of such I'd put more weight on CPU performance than the IGP and it's not likely Intel's Sandy Bridge onwards IGP aren't any good…

        • +2

If you want to play games (as in an exclusively gaming rig) you get a 2500K, which will last you the next 3 years or so.

          End. Of. Story.

And finally, the Intel 3000 HD and 4000 HD are no slouches either (if we're talking laptop resolutions and medium settings):
          http://www.anandtech.com/show/5626/ivy-bridge-preview-core-i…
          http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-i…

I don't have an axe to grind with AMD, but it's mighty boring listening to die-hard folks who cannot get that AMD hasn't been relevant in the CPU scene for 4 years at least.

Yes having competition is great, no one wants monopolies, no one wants an artificial ceiling placed on innovation to save costs, etc… but the facts are irrefutable. AMD has lost the processor war for the last 4 years running, so why waste your money?

        • +1

Absolutely agree that if you want to game properly you buy a desktop PC but not everyone wants to play the latest games at home.

All I am saying is an AMD system will give you a better experience playing on the move with significantly better FPS across all games vs HD3000 (and even HD4000).

      • +1

Some people actually have jobs that requires them to move around a lot which makes desktops a completely stupid idea. That's where desktop replacement or gaming laptops come in.

    • +2

AMD has better inbuilt graphics usually than intel. But i think i3 still has the better power/battery consumption ratio. AMD's are usually cheaper though. AMD i think usually comes with a higher end internal graphics though… HD6000 vs HD3000 from intel

AMD's Bulldozer (their top range) is pretty much on par with intel's i7 (8 core for AMD vs 4 cores/8 thread on intel) then theres the i7 socket 2011 from intel… which is just ridiculous. AMD is pretty much sitting in the bench in terms of desktop/laptop cpus, intel is just competing with themselves.

      • +2

        AMD fanboy negged me.

      • +3

I wouldn't say AMD is out of the game. Same thing happened with the Phenom when it was first released it was fairly lack luster. Then the phenmon II came out and smashed intel for awhile.

AMD has always been a better bang for buck alternative. I support them purely because I game so the speed different doesn't mean a whole lot to me since the GPU (even with top range cards) is the bottleneck in virtually all machines.

I look forward to the bulldozer II. Hopefully AMD can gain some more traction because if intel takes a significant lead it's just going to hurt consumers at the end of the day.

  • +1

why do they keep mentioning exclude apple in every deal like apple run on ADM chip

    • +6

Because tech illiterate people will go into HN expecting to get a macbook for half price.

    • opps i mean to say AMD

    • +4

Some knobs last time said "this Apple laptop has ATI graphics so I want half price"! Fail LOL!@#

      • -1

Yeah but that time harvey specifically said "2 for one on all AMD laptops" and didnt exclude anything or say "cpu only". Hardly normal was stupid and deserved to lose shitload of money!

  • +7

Half price AKA the only price you can sell a laptop with an AMD processor.

  • -2

Buy 2 Laptops, Sell them and Get one freee!

  • +1

So.. Whats the cheapest laptop with this deal?

  • Last year September ….they had a similar promo (BOGOF) ..started out with AMD-speced lappys only.
But once stores ran out of AMD stock, they also started selling Intel lappys. There will be a thread soon on WP.
I suggest follow it to see where the stock is running out :P

  • +2

nothing to see here, move on

  • -7

half price from RRP….who decides the RRP…Gerry?
Hardly Normals RRP is a big joke guys

    • +9

…the manufacturer decides the RRP. And the RRP is the same for all stores in Australia (or atleast, it should be).

      • -3

and do realise that RRP advertised in HN stores is the same one to what it was when the product was launched, things like laptops go down in prices with time and (original) RRP figure holds little value (or no value at all) while comparing prices.

        • +7

RRP prices never go down unless the distibutor announces a price drop. Whether a retailer chooses to depreciate and cut back on their earnings is an entirely different matter, one that you are greatly confused about.

  • +2

they must be having a real tough time moving these when they're not 50% off.
The RRP on these is actually decide by HN as they are almost entirely exclusive models apart from the low end stuff (HN had exclusivity on A6 and A8 AMDs up until a month or two ago).

    • -2

Totally agree with you mate, go to these HN stores on Monday when the sale ends and they will let you know the true meaning of RRP

  • +1

I need to buy a laptop in next few days as a gift.
Good to see this deal. I might go instore to have a look at the product.
I have been really ignorant to the AMD processor.
Would some one please specify what is the equivalent amd processor for i3, i5 or i7?

    • Not sure if this would be included as it is AMD Dual core, not Quad core?

    • Not included as it's a dual core.

    • This sale only includes AMD quad core laptops.

    • the TV add didnt say anything about quad-core, only said amd laptop.
The online add said "FEATURING" amd quad-core. No where does it meantion quad-core amd only

  • +3

50% off utrabooks would be nice :)

    • AMD Ultrathins aren't on the market.. yet :(

  • i saw in the comments below, that if u buy 2 and resell the 2nd for retail price. Is this actually possible? maybe if not entirely retail price but at least 80% or so.

i.e. buy 2 for 500 each and resell one for $800-1000

    • +3

If you're just for making profit why not sell them both ;)

      • i actually was looking for a new laptop for uni haha and for free sounds enticing

    • +2

If so you'd have to expect someone has lower intelligence than you to buy, they are alway some in the world though.

  • Domayne have the exact same sale just for people who are interested :)

  • +12

    I smell an incoming snafu.

And they really could have worded the Advert better.
Such as: "50% off all AMD quad core laptops!" Not "50% off all laptops! FEATURING US BEING SNEAKY ARSEHOLES"

  • +8

Comparing AMD to Intel isn't as easy as perhaps it once was. The A6's are pretty much entry level CPUs though boosted by integrated graphics (let's call them as they are, APUs), so what you end up with is a cheap laptop with a sub-dedicated graphics quality card in your laptop (albeit sharing your DDR3 RAM).

Now, in a round about way (the CPU portion of the APU) may come up to a first-generation i3 CPU for raw number crunching tasks (things like compression, encoding and decoding tasks). Intel may have improved their integrated graphics, but they're most certainly no Radeon / Geforce replacement, so where these machines excel is in accelerating 3D. Games, perhaps future 3D accelerated web browsers etc… will gain significant benefits. If you're lucky enough to find an AMD laptop with a GPU added, then you might even find these get up to scratch with your sub-$1,000 MSI laptops.

I guess in hindsight, if you're after cheap gaming / multimedia playback, then this is the kind of machine that will benefit you the most at the price. If you're after anything else, then pick your poison under $800 (the price at which dedicated graphic chipsets become an option).

Having said all of this, there is no way in hell those laptops are regularly priced at $998 / $1198 - because if they are, they would be ripping their customers off more than ever when their Toshiba L850 (an i5 w/ 2GB Radeon 7670) is available for $999 (a substantially better buy). I'd expect to see those special prices + $100 to be considered reasonable, not double!

    • +1

Bear in mind that almost all these have a discrete GPU as well and therefore have Dual Graphics which will be faster again in games and GPU accelerated apps (IE, Firefox and Chrome are already GPU accelerated along with many other common programs).

    • I've mentioned this before on OzB, but I'll throw it in again.

I have a family member that purchased a Toshy L750 with an A6 in it some time back. For basic browsing & multimedia it's fine, for anything else more intensive it is simply awful. That is all.

Take home message for potential AMD buyers: caveat emptor! ;)

  • AMD's Trinity mobile APUs are supposed to launch in a week. These machines may look poor value then if the new chips achieve the hoped-for speeds.
    http://www.techpowerup.com/165601/AMD-Trinity-APU-Launch-Con…

    • +5

These machines are poor value to begin with, its only after reducing to half price that they begin to look decent.

  • +3

why is the PC that one can only assume Harvey Norman is putting forward as the main bargain for this sale (the one one their front page) is $497 at half price when it is $499 RRP in the US - and less in store when not on 'sale'

I know that we almost always get screwed by the international market (and that's why the govt. is currently investigating but this shit is cray)

If I recall correctly, Harvey Norman had bought the exclusive right to sell a certain range of AMD notebooks and knowing their BS marketing, I wouldn't put it beyond them to do that to fix prices - but don't quote me on that

  • So, can anyone recommend out of these 50% off laptops the best GPU for some low end gaming?

    • +4

I would say these HP's, after a quick look, seem alright:
      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-pavilion-dv6-6b00ax.html
      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-pavilion-dv6-laptop.html
I don't have much experience with Mobile GPU's, but the benchmarks for the 6750M don't seem too bad:
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6750M.43958.0.htm…

      • +6

        I totally agree with ProspectiveDarkness.

HP Pavilion DV6-6B00AX for under $600 would be the best pick.

        Here's a nice summary: http://apcmag.com/notebookhunter/deals/hp-pavilion-dv6-6b00a…

The 6750M is the only real option out of all the AMD laptops on HN's website if you want gaming performance.
For AMD laptops, it is one of the faster/fastest GPUs (excluding 7xxxM).
ProspectiveDarkness's second link has a faster processor, but would be up to ~$200-250 more expensive (both Pavilions have the 6750M).

If you're going to get one, go into a Harvey Norman store and look for a good deal on laptops with the following graphics:

        6770M*
        6850M*
        6750M
        6650M
        6550M
        6620G
        6470M
        6520G
(ranked from best to worst; top to bottom)

*I can't confirm whether any AMD quad-core laptops sold in Australia come with those graphics (the others are confirmed). Here are all the decent GPUs for your budget that may not be found in any AMD quad-core laptop sold at Harvey Norman:
        6870M 6770M 6850M 6830M 6730M 6630M 6570M 6530M

Otherwise, you should just get the DV6-6B00AX. ;)

        • The A6 APU will let it down big time for gaming though (A6 isn't even on par with i3s)

      • Thx PD, got the DV6-6B00AX from Broadway on the Mall.

  • +1

    Does Officeworks price match? :)

    • +1

You'll most likely find that identical laptops at each of the major chains have ever-so-slightly different model number variants; so OW will pull that on you to weasel out, despite the machine, model & specs being exactly the same!

    • +1

office work doesnt stock a lot of AMD laptop, i cant find any quad-core on their website so good luck finding an identical laptop to price match

  • +7

Prepare to be disappointed. I'd like to find a $1000 machine for $500. Instead I find it for $1000 ($1043 to be precise). So it must have been $2000 before the sale. No wonder it's "on sale".

  • Harvey norman has 20,000 AMD Quad Core Laptops?

this seems like a s#%t load of AMD Quad Core Laptops to have in stock.

    • +4

this seems like a s#%t load of AMD Quad Core Laptops to have in stock.

Well with the usual Hardly Normal prices, of course they'd have that much lying around

      • I doubt they would order 20k units to sit on. If you are only selling a couple of something a week you will only keep a few in stock and reorder every couple of weeks.

Suppliers are probably pushing the promo to move their units.
