Alternative options for a refurb https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175203674918?epid=5052591029 for $787

An older gen gaming phone ROG Phone 3 for $621 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175170110041

I have bought an ROG phone from these guys. Phone itself is practically new - refurbished by Asus. They are an authorised Asus refurb reseller.

    • Regarding the asus "we also opened the box to inspect"

Why would they do that? I would definitely avoid buying from them

      • +3

I've had the same doubt too before making a purchase.

        1. I have asked the question and they've explained it is to inspect on content.
        2. Own due diligence indicate they are an authorised refurb reseller https://www.asuspromotion.net/au/wheretobuy/re.htm
        3. Upon receiving the item, phone was in mint condition. Box was wrapped in pretty legit looking refurb by ASUS sticker, and everything described by seller were in the box (no case, seller also made clear on listing)
        4. Asus refurb sticker with serial number matches with what's found in the phone's system page.

One thing I am curious, why are there so many refurbs floating around.

        • Mostly customer returns, display units,…

        • +1

I can't rec buying the ROG 3 tbh. Asus customer support is crap and there is one major bug floating around with an update that bricks the wifi function on the phone to the point where even a reset cannot fix it. I should know since I got it and my phone is now useless since it is a 2nd phone so I don't have a sim for it. Support also will not help aside from telling me to end the phone back and that they will prob charge a me a repair fee when the entire matter is due to them (profanity) up with the update.

I am planning to just install a custom rom and see if it fixes it at this point.

          • @AlastorSin: Mine is going strong.

Latest patch installed. No issue with wifi.

I feel like that’s a lot of money to be paying for a previous gen phone. Especially when you can pick up an 8 gen 1 for only $50 more :(

    • -2

where can you find the red magic 7 pro for $800 are you crazy. if you are looking at that link the above with the refurb asus rog phone 5, It has the same chipset as the red magic 6 pro

      • +6

OP chill lol. The Motorola has an 8 gen 1 and that is currently 799 at JB. Yeah the gaming phone might have better cooling, but it still has last year’s SOC. Just my two cents.

        • If only apple wanted to make customers happy instead of profit damm there phones and OS is smooth

          • @BiG BoY: There's bad throttling and not much to take advantage of Apple's chip anyway… whereas Android at least you can emulate Switch games which sort of uses the power.

            • @daniesaurs: Really didn't know apple had throttling

              • @BiG BoY: All phones have throttling. These phones internal components can go well over 100c and won't be good for anyone holding it in their hands. lol.

    I've had ZTE gear before.

"Pro" has never been a term I'd have used.

    • +1

i’ve had zte, loved the phone for value …..then donald trump cut off zte and huawei from google and the brand took a hit ….donald’s gone and so chinese manufactures get access to android ….
they also manufacture modems and 5g transmission equipment

Impressive specs and features, it would be my childhood dream phone

    • +1

Smart phones hadn't been invented yet so I couldn't dream of a dream phone.

      • +1

Not sure how old are you now, but during my childhood it was the Nokia Symbian smart phone, or the Xda series, not to forget the Nokia NGage too

        • oh this comment has activated a lost hidden memory

          i thank you kind sir

i too remember dreaming about those above phones

and also the super cool futuristic alien looking playstation controller i saw once in a magazine.. it looks so sleek and alien.. childhood me was in love with at first sight

also old school gaming magazines were so cool

    • During my childhood a properly working landline was a dream phone

      • -1

I remember back in the days in my home country, we can use landline phone to play multiplayer games linked to the tv. Of course they charge by minutes and could be charging hundred of dollars an hour. Basically you use the landline num pad as controller, starring at the screen competing with other players which dialed in. I think that's the closest to online games back in the early 90s before interner is mainstream

        • I remember that too, back in Austria. Spent ages online. The phone bill was $1800 back then. My parents wanted to kill me

  • +10

I've had a couple of RedMagic phones now. Don't buy if you are using it as a daily driver, as camera, user interface and overall usability is not great.

If buying this as a second, gaming only device or you only play games using your phone, this is a great buy.

    • +1

These are my exact thoughts and what I tell people too. The triggers are great for shooting games. As a phone it is horrible. I would use it daily if I could root it and run a google rom

    • I have the 16gb ram variant with 256gb storage.. somehow i still run out of ram.. when i do a kill all tasks function i am still using 10/16gb ram somehow lol.. phones always needing more ram.. i think i need 64gb of ram now just to be and stay above myself and be happy

technology and demand for more technology moves so fast man.. we gonna be 90 maybe and still asking and wanting more

the thirst and hunger never stops

which i guess is a good thing

      but got damn

  • This or the Poco F4 GT?

    • +2

      Poco

      • +1

Poco F4 GT or Poco F3

        • +1

          F4 all day

          • @BiG BoY: double the price tho

  • 6.8in screen jeepers how big are they making people hands and pockets these days?

    • +3

Back in those days the bezel was a inch alone

    • -1

Because gaming phone were designed for play games with two hands, and fingers would block some views, so larger screen would be better.

    • they fit fine in my deep cargo work pants from bisley :)

although I wish they made a strong case or cover for this that I could attach a lanyard too.

The official one is plasticky and very weak.. I have already cracked it and bits have fallen off in many places and I consider myself to be very careful.. ok semi careful I did experiment with a few things but still.. it does not instil safety or hope in the product

hopefully a rugged cover exists or is in the works because the current official version is for looks only and barely protects the phone or itself from drops scratches bumps or anything really

this is for the zte nubia red magic ghost 6s pro 16gb 256gb variant

TL;DR wish they made a strong rugged cover for this with lanyard compatibility in mind because I definitely would not like to lose this phone.. mine personally cost over $1000+ got it when it was fairly new last year.

  • Is it better than S22 Ultra?

    • +1

Yes, costs less than half of the s22 ultra.

What is "better" in your view/usage case?

    • +1

Of coz, the specs all better than 22ultra, more buttons and cooling fan, RGB and gaming 165hz display

    • For everyday use, no.

    • +1

For purely gaming, I'd say yes. For anything else, no.

    • +1

Gaming and any other long running intensive operations. The fan and thermal design would allow the device to run much longer without throttling which would result in a drop in FPS or slowdown of processing.

  • Vs the Asus ROG 5, what are the opinions? If it wasn't for the weak camera in this one, I'd probably have already copped it.

    • ROG 5 would be a better overall buy. But I don't think you can get one at this price?

      • Yeah looks like the ROG is holding its price for now.

  • If you're going to do long hours of gaming on this phone, it will heat up and you'll need to use the inbuilt cooling fan. With it on, there is a high pitch whine similar to a jet engine whine. Noise is annoying but without it, the Sd888 will thermal throttle and performance goes to poop

    Gaming phone.. so lame

    • The name is lame. Functional aspect is practical, 1. Large batter 2. Good thermal at the cost of size and water resistance.

I am not a gamer, but got a gaming phone for practical reasons.

Wish they can get rid of the RGB and slim it down abit.

  • Hi Guys I bought this phone late last year so have had a good time using it. At the start it was fantastic…… But after extensive use of it I'm not gonna ever buy another redmagic phone due to the OS. Comming from the fantastic Xiaomi poco f2 this redmagic6 phone just has minor bugs that annoys you so much. You also hardly receive any updates which this phone, which it requires so much off. No shortcuts for NFC….. stupid low battery prompts twice, once at 20% and another at 10% with a stupid loud sound. Camera screen shot is easily triggered and even tho the battery is huge it only last an entire average of 10hrs usage for me which is ok. With
intensive gaming with the loud fan on about 4hrs-5hrs. Camera and it's Os features are just rubbish so don't expect anything fantastic.

  • Wow sold out in under 48hrs

    • It is a fairly good phone ticks a lot of boxes

UI is a bit off but still manageable

My only gripe is the cover needs work or I hope some third party makes a good rugged cover or case for it with lanyard support

The fast charging on this is insane :)

Good time to be alive technology wise
