their prices are high cos they probably pay tax

whereas other places are only cash in hand

    • +3

best ive tried is top ryde bakers

marrickville pork roll my only criticism is the bread is never crispy

another good place is bay ngo in bankstown

      • +3

Yeah I can't see Top Ryde Roll'd lasting long with the bakery literally 30 metres away, even though the bakery recently raised their price to $7 they still can't make em fast enough to shorten the 20 person queue at lunch

  • +1

Rolld is a good option if you're stuck in a shopping centre food hall and want something half decent/healthy, but Id never go out of my way to eat there even with this bargain.

  • +4

Don’t forget Hong Ha if you’re around mascot, or Nam Fong in Bankstown.
About as good as it gets unlike Roll’d.

    • +2

      +1 Nam Fong Bankstown.
And if you’re in Bankstown, Nam Fong > Bay Ngo!

      • Tried it all and think Nam Fong is the one to beat. Bay Ngo is a hit and miss. Marrickville is more value for money because they stuff so much in the bread.

      • concur Nam Fong my go to in Bankstown

  • +4

If you can some how force yourself to eat one of these rolld should be paying you.

  • +5

Roll'd pho is super teeny tiny and overpriced. So stingy.

  • +2

Cheers OP. can't complain with $5 Bahn Mi

    • +2

You will after you try it.

      • +5

Yes it was pretty shitty haha. Not worth more than 5 bux.

  • +3

I reckon a good banh mi is defined by how good their pickled vegetables tastes.

    • +4

unpopular opinion, but for me its the bread

has to be crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside

      • it piss

    • +1

The bread for me. Crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Plenty of pate and mayo and extra chilli please! Nothing beats the smell of fresh bread while it's just out of the oven and into your mouth!

  • +1

So where can I get Vietnamese Fusion? Banh Mi with truffles and shaved chocolate.

  • +6

I wouldn't even pay $2 for it - hands down the worst banh mi I've had EVER
Bread was rubbish not to mention the banh mi itself was half empty and the meat drier than cardboard

  • +2

    Roast pork belly
    Or roast pork and cracking?

I ideally want roast pork belly with cracking

    • +1

I prefer their beef range, but if pork range go with pork belly because their porks bahn mi are dry as f, atleast the belly part got some moist left.

    • +1

Eating the crackling one now. Disgusting.

Worst banh mi I've ever eaten.
$5 should be the normal price

      • you were warned

        • +1

          Yeah but I'm a sucker for discounts…

You get what you pay for I guess

  • +2

I've had their banh mi twice. A little below average but not bad at all in my opinion. I wouldn't pay the normal price, but for $5 I think it's well worth it. It will fill you up and its healthy enough.

  • +1

Funny that all Victorian stores are unavailable for pickup via the apps.

    • +1

Does the website work? It seems to say Store Online.

    • +2

I order through browser for pick up. Try website.

  • +2

I wouldn't even pay $5 for a BM at Roll'd… worst BM ever. Would rather pay a bit extra at my local Vietnamese baker/take away shop in Darra (QLD).

    • Yeah Roll'd banh mi's are so bland. You're lucky though that you have authentic vietnamese food right at your doorstep in Darra.

  • Anyone got a hot tip on a good Banh Mi in Perth CBD now that Mama Tran's closed?

    • Le Vietnam. 80 Barrack Street, Perth CBD

    • Fresh Provisions? On Hay St. Used to be good but I haven't been there in a while and it got popular.

    • When did they close? Was always busy when I used to pop in. Haven't been up in Milligram St for a while.

City Provisions used to be good, and the place on Barrack St, but likewise, welcome any suggestions for Perth BMT.

    • +2

Perth CBD places I know from the top of my head…

      • City Prov Hay St/160 St George Tce
      • Golden Bakery William St
      • Saigon Pastry House Barrack St
      • Le Vietnam Barrack St
      • Asian Delights - perth busport esplanade - the one right in the middle-ish.
      • Rollz (Hay St, opposite the qv1/ghd building)
      • Roll'd (take your pick between the 2)

In regards of a good one within the CBD? - These days it would be Le Vietnam. City Prov used to be the best when the ol' grandma used to make them right at the street front… but they've dropped their game (I'm always getting a stale roll from them, or a toasted one that gets cold… maybe just bad timing)

I recall of another small-ish vietnamese run joint that does a BMT nearish to the perth mint but I've forgotten what its called…

      • Didn't know Golden Bakery did them. I suggested to the ladies last year they should do BMT. Will have to check it out.

Yes, City Prov was good when they did it right in front of you. Haven't been around that way for a while.

        • Re: golden bakery, unfortunately it's a pre-made one that's wrapped up in plastic and left in the fridge lol it isn't a on-demand one like the others

There's also baguette-me-not at Allendale sq as well, but that's more fancied up bmts rather then your usual slog of mystery meat, pate and lard/margarine

          • @l4nn13: Oh theres also phovela down at st George's tce at st Martin's tower but I haven't tried it yet

            • @l4nn13: The one next to 197 SGT (LunchBox?) is also good for BMT. Think it has a couple of other places too.

  • +2

    Aren't these really bad?

    • +1

Matter of opinion, I think they are ok. Probably quality varies a little between their stores

      • +3

QC issue is definitely there, went to a busy one once and they forgot chilli, and other garsnishes, and poured a bottle worth of soy sauce on my pork crackling… went to another store and atleast they gave me a complete bahn mi with balanced seasoning.

  • +1

$5 is a steal for banh mi but their rrp is nah

  • +3

So many young kids on this page saying they used to pay around $5 for a Banh mi and think it was cheap
they used to call Banh Mi the two dolla rolls back in my days

  • Bad Mi, so bad. Mine was all bread

  • +1

    For $5 I might consider it… I’ve never been to a Roll’d before.

I’ve always been spoilt for choice since there has always been that one Vietnamese bakery nearby that makes great banh mi.

    My non-Cabramatta recommendations include:
-The pork rolls from A&H Bakery at Greenyway, Wetherill Park; pork crackling is great
-Kings Hot Bread, Hurstville - there’s usually a line for this place at lunch time.

Bass Hill Hot Bread in Bass Hill Plaza used to be good (though it depended on who was making it for you). I’m not even sure if they still exist/got replaced by something else.

There was one near Flemington Station that was decent, but it has been too many years since I’ve been there and I’m not sure what the pandemic has done to it.

In Cabramatta — the one across the station I guess. Admittedly, I have not been there for over a decade.

  • +2

I tried genuine Banh Mi in Vietnam. The bread was all crust without any white inside. So for a genuine experience buy the Roll'd Banh Mi and pick out all the fluffy white bread.

  • +1

Seriously the worst banh mi I’ve ever had… definitely wouldn’t ever be buying one again

  • +7

Don't get it twisted people.. roll'd is not vietnamese food … it's an abomination.

I tried 1 item in their menu… and never again…

It's trash… go to your local viet bakery and or shop.

    And I'm vietnamese……

Bread rolls in Sydney are quite average imho

Rolls in adelaide are much better.

However if I'm in cabra… my recommendation would be kk bakery… go for the basic pork roll or chicken roll. And then get a fresh sugar can juice for a real viet experience.

    In adelaide its this place:
    Banh Mi Thit Vietnam
    (08) 8340 8555
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/ET6FDVHBWGueXTMu7
Go for a roast pork roll.

It's been a long time since these were 2 bucks lol

  • +1

Thanks for the spots. Fresh Provisions is walkable so might give that a pop. One day will try Le Vietnam.

Mama's closed in March. COVID casualty according to the employee I spoke to. I was also surprised given how busy it was. $9.30 Banh Mi with crispy baguette, spice and strong coriander flavours. Couldn't be beat. Recently tried one up on Hay behind QV1 and it was lacklustre.

  • +2

So I tried it for lunch… absolutely awful as expected. Got the shaking beef. Tastes like it has been boiled and bugger all flavour. They did not add the chilli. (That alone ruins it, chilli and coriander are the two must haves) It’s the blandest banh mi ever.. bread is a weird warm spongy texture too.

    • +3

Is there a survivor's support group?

  • +2

Literally the worst Banh Mi money can buy… couldn't believe they microwaved the roll… 🤦‍♂️

  • +2

Any good and cheap banh mi in capital cities CBD? Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane? People saying $5 is overpriced but I can’t find any in CBD for around this price. Happy to be proven wrong though. Would love any locations in the above CBD as I’m in these areas a lot

Edit: never been to Roll’d, it does look overpriced but everything seems like it costs too much these days

    • In Brisbane CBD you can try Mrs Luu's. They are a little more "premium" than the suburban places with prices to match, about $10 from memory.

  • +2

Is it weird being viet and not liking banh mi in general

    • I'm Chinese and don't like rice. Fried rice is fine, but plain rice + main dishes is usually a no from me.

      • Wow must say I'm pretty surprised to be reading this!

  • +1

    Ban you?

    • +2

      OP after reading these comments:

      “Banh* mi”

      • +1

I don’t understand all the hate. I’d rather go to Roll’d than McDonald’s… not like Domino’s is the best Italian cuisine either.

I literally support my local Vietnamese bakery everyday.. and they charge $12. it’s not going to hurt them if I go to Roll’d once.

  • Roll'd is shite, I only ever get anything from there when it's free

  • +1

    Lunch sorted. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Standard price $10 for a Vietnamese roll is ridiculous. Stick to the little guys that actually make better rolls anyway (for the punters south of Adelaide, Le's Bakery at Brighton best in class - $10 cash for a VR with a drink & and spring roll or donut)

  • +1

Support your local Vietnamese family instead

  • +1

If you are in WA, check out Ben Thanh in Mirrabooka-Girrawheen area up north. It is a very small takeaway. Around $4 for the roll. They also squeeze fresh sugar juice which goes well with the roll. The combo costs less than the burger and (unhealthy) drink combo at Macca, HJ etc.
    https://restaurantguru.com/Ben-Thanh-Girrawheen
I have no idea how they make a profit at that price…

  • +2

Their Android app is still crap and doesn't work at all, stuck on load screen.
When trying to redeem via their website it says "store is closed".
When talking to the staff at the counter at tooronga they just shrug their shoulders and don't give a crap.

Too hard, too lazy, too bad, I'll keep buying local, at least that's quality and reliable.

  • Still waiting for debates about best banhmi stores in Melbourne

    • Nhu Lan Bakery Footscray and Richmond. Longest queues and fastest service you will ever see. Double meat for an extra dollar or so.

  • +1

Wow… Had it today .. so $hit like the comments say.

  • The cuisine should be in inverted commas - “Vietnamese”. Roll’d is absolutely awful - and their “bánh mì” is disgusting.

  • +2

I've been burned twice at Roll'd as I was either lazy with UberEats or was in a shopping centre. I'll not be burned a third time.

Anyway I think own of the best pork roll places in Sydney is the below:

    Marrickville Pork Roll
    https://maps.app.goo.gl/BRufPjpzyoaRUNAe6

  • +2

30 000 VND ($1.80 AUD) here in Vung Tau

    • +1

      inflation getting banh mis now

  • +2

Tried the pork crackling banh mi as well as the lemongrass beef.

    Both terrible.

    Meat was dry and flavourless.
Pickled vegetables taste overly sour with no sweetness.
    Missing hoi sin sauce.

    Bread roll actually nice.

    Overall bland and too small.

Barely worth the $5. Need to eat two to be full.

  • +1

can't recommend this to anyone at all

  • +1

Just had the BBQ chicken.. OMG it was fkn terrible. It literally tastes like you're eating a bottle of Soy sauce. never again.

  • +1

Complete shite. Save your $5 and go eat some real banh mi.

  • +1

they've 'closed' some stores so they can't be ordered from to use the coupon.

    • +1

Did you try the website? Some people said the app doesn’t work.

      • +1

yep i only looked at the website

  • +2

Shame to hear about the decline of MPR. As someone mentioned before the Darling Square one was great but over the years as they've slowly to grow their "empire" (new branch in CQ) naturally the QC and standards fall along with raising of prices. It happened with El Jannah and now MPR.

Anyway, my favourite banh mi place in Australia is probably Nhu Lan in Melbourne. Consistency and haven't outrageously raised their prices over time.

  • +2

I got the "Vietnamese Shaking Beef" one. Pretty decent for $5 even if it's not really much like proper/authentic banh mi

    • +1

      Very good to hear !!

  • +1

It seems my local store has chosen to state they’re closed on the app, and won’t do the deal in store. Not really a deal if you can’t actually get it

    • On the website all stores in Queensland are open except for Garden City.
