Arrosto Pizza Oven $349 (C&C / + Delivery) @ Barbeques Galore

150

Gas Pizza oven. Similar to the popular and more expensive Ooni Koda 12.
Currently on offer $349 - $50 off.
I purchased one and quality is good.
It's a gas appliance and certified for Australia. Runs on propane however comes with a new LCC27 LPG gas hose (not compatible with the old POL style gas cylinders). I understand that propane bottle gas appliances will eventually move over to LCC27 for safety reasons.
Refer to the following website for propane cylinder POL/LCC27 changes/compatibility info.

            you said : cat6e
            i said Cat8

I think it can hear you, Ray

  • Jokes aside, anyone tried one of these?

I got the rebranded Koda 12 (Monroe 12 I think) from Coles for $180 and love it. I'd ideally like the larger size for ease of turning pizzas, but I have no complaints on how well and how fast it cooks them. It's able to produce proper Neapolitan style pizza that cooks in about 2-3 minutes.

    • Got the Coles Monro for $99 and it is absolutely fantastic. Cooks restaurant quality neapolitan pizzas in no time. These are very simple devices, im surprised there are not more on the market as there is great profit potential in them.

      • I'm spewing I missed out on one. Mind you they were still $229 when I last saw them

      • that's a crazy price. congrats. how'd u get it?

  • +1

If it can get up to 450-500C as it says then it's a winner. Very happy with my Ooni koda 12

    • +1

My thermometer gets a bit sketchy after reaching 450C…. It cooks a neopolitan within a couple of minutes. Need to turn pizza due to uneven cooking heat but I understand that a Koda is no different. Perhaps the 16 provides more even cooking as dual burners?

      • +3

I know a few negative reviews of the Ooni Koda 12 are from the need to turn but that's how's it's cooked in proper Neapolitan style wood ovens too. It's even kind of the point so nothing wrong with any of the ovens. I think the Koda 16 still has the same need to turn but it's probably just to accommodate the larger pizza (a wood oven would usually have a fire to the back and side a bit.

      • I have the Koda 16 and can confirm it still needs turning (less than the 12) but that's the style of oven and pizza. It does get very hot and will cook a pizza in about 90 seconds

        • Do you cook anything else other than pizza? I seen few recipe where people cooking steak, chicken, charred vegie, etc. I have cheap commercial electric pizza oven with top and bottom element that reach 350 deg (40cm x 40cm stone size) and was considering buying gas oven as it is different result from gas compare to the elect one (even though temp of stone reach ~360. I was tossing between Koda 16 and this 12" BBQ galore one, I know its a big difference in price between them, but guess this 12" would be difficult to place large cast iron pan inside & will be too close to flame and can fit bigger pizza size, guess thicker stone 10mm vs 15mm, so might be faster recovery time and more heat retention!. Any thought on your experience and feedback!

  • Did you try it yet and what stone temp did you manage to get and how long does it take to reach it?
If you have spare old hose and bottle, can you change the newer hose to the old one? The salesperson did not like this idea, but did not give any reason why..
I am very tempted to buy this but originally wanted to buy the 16" bigger one (Ooni Koda16), so can cook bigger pizza, easier to turn, edge at back does not burn when too close to flame, and cook other stuff than pizza (steak, vegie, chicken).

  • Quick google & came across this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opyoyNyAv4o

I was with him all the way up to the frozen pizza base 🤦

  • It gets up to at least 450C within ~15/20 mins. I made 5 pizzas and waited around 5 mins inbetween for stone to get back up to temp.
Yes of course you can change the hose (standard fittings) 😀. Looking at the manual and burner details/drawing, it has a removable gas nozzle that could be swapped/drilled out for natural gas conversion/connection. Speak to a qualified gas/plumber 😀.
You need to turn the pizza often/constantly to avoid burning. 16 would be better however as per previous comment, you still to need turn the pizza.

    • Thanks, looks great value compared to Koda 12

  • This is very similar to the Coles version they had a little while ago

  • So an LPG appliance that doesn't work with 99% of LPG bottles in circulation, do you get an adaptor at least?

    • +1

No adaptor provided. Embrace change I guess. Should be able to change cylinder/refill at bunnings with new style cylinder at no extra cost.

      • Should be able to change cylinder/refill at bunnings with new style cylinder at no extra cost.
Do you think so? I understand Bunnings swap/refilled both POL and LCC27, so guess if you give them POL, they will give full POL and not the new LCC27, to force you buy the new one.

        • Yes I do.
Bunnings would need to follow new legislation for 'safety reasons'. See email link above.
Current gas cylinders are obviously reusable over many years however can be easily retrofitted with new LCC27 valves/connections via bottle threaded connection. Would there be much of a cost difference? I see the bigger change in purchasing new appliances and general public awareness. Bunnings would need to cater for both but obviously promote LCC27 over transition period of ~10 years.
In addition, its been mandatory since April that all new appliances are manufactured/sold with LCC27 hose/connections, I see gas bottles being no different.
My honest view is it'll all be okay if you have the newer POL system. Worst case scenario is swapping the hose over to use up existing gas bottles.

        • No. The newer bottles from bunnings have both POL and LCC27 in the same fitting. Source. I bought this oven and needed a bottle.

    • As a result this will not fit a POL style gas cylinder and will only work with the safety protection (LCC27) gas cylinder available in both 4kg & 9kg sizes

I'm confused, aren't the 4kg/9kg what most people are using for bbq?

      • +1

Yes those are the common sizes.
Both POL and LCC27 propane cylinders are still readily available/in circulation however POL will be phase out over next 10 years. Going forward all new propane cylinder appliances will only be sold with LCC27 connections.
As per above you can swap the hose over to a POL however a 'saleperson' won't endorse/recommend as LCC27 is a safer design.

      • +3

Those are the old style connectors.

The old POL gas cylinders can only be used with the current BBQ appliances where the appliance fitting is male and connects to the POL's Type 21 female connector on the cylinder. The new LCC27 connector on the appliance cannot be used with old POL Type 21 cylinder valves.

The new LCC27 gas cylinders are backwards compatible. They have both a male and female thread and hence works with the old Type 21 BBQ appliances and new LCC27 appliances as well.

I am the Arrosto 9000. You may call me Arrosto.

  • I bought one on release for $399 and cooks pizza great. I was not happy about the gas bottle switch either but upon inspection you can just undo the hose where it meets with the oven and swapped with my bbq. It was the same pressure regulator and saves me buying a new bottle plus filling. Hope this helps someone. Disclaimer… obviously this new bottle fitting LCC27 is for safety and undoing the gas hose at the oven has its risks.

    • Did you just screw in the old hose, or you have to put some special gas paste sealant?
How long it takes to cook pizza with home made dough? and do you get airy crust with leopard effect? I want to upgrade my cheap electric commercial pizza oven with top and bottom element (reach 350deg) but not sure if will get much better result that I am after with this oven.

      • yes screw in hose connection/standard fitting. No paste required. Please speak to a plumber if need be. My oven reaches at least 450C.

  • Thanks, bought one for $314, pick up from store early next week, when available in stock.

    • How did you get it down to $314?

      • +1

Bought the recent deal of Home eGift card with 10% discount which costed $349*0.9 = $314, where you can buy/use it in many retail outlets including BBQ Galore. Home eGift card

    • Yeah, love to know, I tried for a better price and no go.

Just picked on up , thanks OP. Trying tonight with store bought bases. Also tested temps with bbq probes, not so accurate but got to 500f in about 10 mins. With gas bottles I asked Bunnings, next time you get a new swap and go ask for the new fitting bottle. ( I was lucky I already had one without knowing…it was meant to be )

    • +1

I'm pleased for you however not the store purchased pizza bases…. :-) They'll burn.
Good to hear about your gas connection experience. Thought it was worth knowing up front but not such a big issue.
Enjoy…. there's many pizza dough recipes out there. :-) My go to is Glenn & Co on youtube (it just works):- https://youtu.be/0mxxGrq7PoI

I tried a couple I normally get for the oven and this one was really good. https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/665731/tur…

Yes it burnt a little but worked well. I will definitely do my own dough next. I juts couldn't wait lol

      • Which flour do you use to et good result and where do you buy it from? I understand they recommend high protein flour with high W index, but not many brands state the W index. I tried Vito Poolish recipe and found 65% hydration is reasonable to work with (can range from 60-70%).

        • +1

Caputo and Stagioni. Try and find a local Italian owned IGA. Look for a '00' if all else fails. Caputo is available on ebay. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/275090061562?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…
          Mutti for the pizza sauce.
          You're making me hungry!!!!
There's so many recipes however always start with good ingredients.

          • @PJAus: Hopefully I will get better crust & leopard effect with the gas oven compare to the electric one (I collected the oven this evening and will try tomorrow to swap & fill the empty bottle from Bunnings with the new bottle fitting).
I tried Defiance Baker flour from Woolies with protein 12.5% but not sure of its W index, 5kg for $10.
I wanted to try Lighthouse Bread And Pizza Plain Flour with Protein 11.9% & W 250-350, currently on special at Woollies for $3/kg. Have you try any of them and what is your thought? I am not sure if I can find IGA Italian owner close by, how much they normally sell the Caputo and do you know the %protein and W index of it? Thanks

            • @huntabargain: @huntabargain so what are your initial thoughts of the Arrosto? Are you happy with the end product pizzas? Could you achieve the leopard crust effect? I am still on the fence and am awaiting a honest review from a seasoned pizza maker like you. Thanks

              • +1

@arkanoid: I cooked one pizza from a home made pizza ball which I had frozen, so defrosted overnight in fridge then left in room temp for 2-3 hours before shaping (as per Vito video). I think I made it a bit too large so rear end was too close to flame and burnet slightly. I think I need to practice more, was not amazing as I hoped. Next time I will preheat the oven for longer, then turn flame to lowest setting, then launch smaller size pizza. I will report back in few days after making a new batch with different flour. On the positive, the flame/ignition control is on the side unlike the Ooni Koda 12 which is at the back, so is better positioned for easy access.
On the list I want to cook steak and chargrilled chicken in cast iron pan.
BTW, I noticed the price reverted back to $399, so deal is over.

                • @huntabargain: Thanks for your insight @huntabargain, no doubt the pizzas will get better after a more attempts. I am keen to hear your thoughts after a few more cooks. Yes deal seems like its over but I would still purchase if it as good as I'm hoping it is going to be. Thanks again

@arkanoid: Finally tried out this device. Made 4 small pizzas with it. I'm very happy with it. Crusts were light and fluffy with nice scorch marks. Restaurant quality. The unique aspect was having it come out so fresh that it's still steaming which makes it taste even better.

      • Thanks for the recommendation. Followed the vid and it worked out perfectly. Used Caputo 00 pizzeria flour. Only did a 24 hour proof for the dough and it was already excellent but will try longer next time and compare. Only thing my pizzas seemed a bit smaller even though the ingredient quantities were the same.

  • Not sure, I think 12.5% to 13.5% is good. Good flour isn't cheap so look for offers on Ozbargain and the bigger 5kg bags.
I recall using lighthouse (comes in a box?) But wasn't that impressed.

    On special again for $349.
You can buy Ultimate or His Gift Cards @ 10% off from WW to reduce price further.
When my old style "Swap & Go" bottle ran out, I just swapped it to the new style bottle @ BP. So far I used the oven to cook great Pizza, steak, Vegies and more, Pitta bead is on the list.
I made door for the oven to use while pre-heating and it reach 500 deg C in 10-15 min.
