This previously popular electric scooter is back on sale and now $100 cheaper than last time with $24.99 flat rate shipping Australia wide on the scooter.

In my opinion this scooter and the Segway F40 are the best road commuter electric scooters you can get that offer good performance and riding experience for the price.

If only governments would decriminalise their public use

      NSW and VIC*

          • While VIC is doing its trial, its only the 'paid' versions, like that makes it any better.

Ha! Come to Qld, I saw one rider the other day undertake a cop car, without a helmet doing close to 40km/h.

Note to anyone intending to go up hills, you need a dual motor scooter.

  • +8

Wa legalised them and the take up has been great
The bikepaths are getting a serious workout and a much needed injection of funding

    • dedicated scooter lanes FTW!

      • +2

So three lanes now? Pedestrian, bicycle, and scooter? What about skateboards and rollerblades?

Maybe we should just stick to feet lanes and wheel lanes…

        • +2

People struggle with feet and wheel lanes already. The amount of pedestrians in the cycling lanes that get abusive when I'm in there on my scooter. Like I'm supposed to be here and you're not.

          • +1

@Clear: Okay, but that’s a compliance issue. The answer to that isn’t just to create a new type of lane.

          • +1

@Clear: Pedestrians are the caravans of footpaths

            • @joelmuzz: As a cyclist, pedestrians are the cyclists of shared use paths

              • -1

@Arty.R: Runners are the worst of them all.

  • Would this be good on steep hilly and rough roads? Doing a 10km trip return from train station to work.

    • Depends how much you weigh. Have you tried out the purple Beam scooters? They're the commerical version of the G30 and good to try out on hills.

Ideally you need something for $1000 more that has dual motors.

    • Depends how rough, the little wheels can't cope with much.
Better to get a folding electric bike.

  • Much difference between the G30L and F40? Can't really decide. I live in Wollongong which is fairly flat. Ability to chuck charging cable in backpack would be rad.

    • G30L needs charging Buick not cable like the regular Max, it’s also quite a bit smaller so less ideal if tall. Can’t personally compare with the F40 though.

I've used the G30L for about 6 months now. The main differences I can see are:
      - G30L has tubeless tires (my preference over tubed scooter tyres. I have a DynaPlug tubeless repair kit in case or a puncture when out an about. If you puncture a tube I think it's game over until you replace it, and replacing tubes on a Segway scooter is not impossible but it's not fun)
      - G30L has an aluminium frame (I'm not 100% sure, but I think the F-series has a tubed steel frame now at the bottom)
      - G30L has a rear motor. I've used front and rear, and I find the rear motors are better. Front wheel motors sometimes skid/skip or loose traction briefly when going up gutters or inclines
      - G30L really feels over-engineered, like it can take a beating. I don't have any wobbles or loose parts on mine after 6 months

Hey, thanks for the info 👌

      • Out of curiosity, have you noticed any downsides?

I’ve currently got an f40a and was looking at purchasing this mainly for the tyres. I haven’t had a punctured tire with my f40a yet, but I know somebody who has and apparently it’s an absolute annoyance to fix.

I’ve been in the market to buy either a G30L or G30.
It seems from what I’ve read, G30 is the way to go if it has the gen 2 motor, whereas a case could be made that the G30L is better if the G30 has a gen 1 motor.

I assume most new G30s would have the gen 2 motor at this point.

A recent search on ozbargian, find that the G30 hasn’t had a decent ($700-800) sale in a while, whereas the G30L has come up a few times with a significant discount. I’d love to wait for a sale (and potentially could wait, seeing as my F40a is good thus far), however I don’t know if there’ll be a good sale on the G30 again considering just about everything is going up in price

        • Get some Armor-Diloz Sealant for your tyres. Pricey compared to your regular green slime, but works so much better.

          • @Clear: Don't those G30s already have sealant in their tires, still need to put more? I've heard it's no good if too much sealant inside

            • @DraggyX: They do. We're talking about the F40A however that does not :)

        • I've had a G30 in the past but sold it when I moved out of town. When I moved back into town I decided to buy the G30L instead.
The differences that mattered to me:
          - G30L is smaller all around (not as tall, not as long, slightly less weight). This is a pro and a con - I think some people might prefer the larger size, but oddly, the slightly smaller dimensions has made riding and travelling with it slightly better for me. It has a smaller footprint on a footpath, in your boot, carrying down stairs, etc.
          - G30L has the brushless motor - this was the biggest reason. Despite having a smaller battery and range, you can use the full speed and motor power for most of the battery range - I need this because I have a lot of hills where I live.
          - One annoyance is that the G30L needs a power brick for the charger, whereas the G30 just needs a cord (because it's integrated). This wasn't a deal breaker but is annoying, because you can simply carry a power cord and charge anywhere.
          - The G30L range is above average for commuting - if I push it I would only need to charge once a week. So I find it's smaller range more than adequate for me (I run on sport mode 100%)
          - I like the grey colour over black - it seems to mark less and maybe is more visible on the road/footpath.
          - I don't know if true, but I think the G30L handles speeds/hills/acceleration slightly better than the G30 because it's lighter maybe.
          - my original G30 (and a mate's at work) both developed a 'whirring' sound in the motor when you are accelerating (it goes away when you read full speed). I guess this is related to the brushed design. The G30L motor is silent and hasn't changed sound/performance in the 6 months I've used it (I've done about 1000 kms now)

I can't really think of any other downsides except for big upgrades - I wish it had suspension and a more powerful motor. But for the price I think it's decent value.

Ultimately, if I could have found a G30 with the Gen 2 brushless motor, I probably would have bought that. But I couldn't find one and am happy with the G30L for what I need.

    • Beware that Wollongong police have it in for scooters and are catching riders. There is talk of a legal trial of hire scooters but not yet.

  • I bought the F40, rode it once to and from the train station and it couldn’t climb up the steep hill on the way home unlike my previous Xiaomi M365 pro which could take on this hill. Mind you the hill is more than 20% gradient steep. The reason for this I believe is the F40 motor just output 350w and no peak output unlike the M365 Pro and G30L. So look for a scooter which have higher peak W advertised as it will take on steep hills. I sold the F40 after one ride and am buying this G30L now.

  • i tried a few scooter like the xiaomi m365, dragon x1 and now using the max. I have to say having more power and bigger wheel makes a huge difference. highly recommend the MAX, not sure about this G30L thou

    • Max G30? Max G30L is the second gen motor.

      • yea must be Max G30, i only need to bring the cable to charge, the inverter is inbuilt

      • L is also smaller capacity battery and smaller size scooter. Though the larger capacity battery from the full size Max will actually fit if you have one spare.

        • I keep forgetting the original has the larger battery.

  • is this is similar to the ones Beam use?

    • Yes they use the Segway Max Plus designed specifically for the rental market. There are a few variations in the models and I've seen 3 different types of indicators used.

      • can you buy a max plus? would love the suspension

        • Unfortunately not. There is the InMotion S1 that has the front fork suspension with a a little bit of suspension at the back. I might have a deal on that one soon for ~$1000 but not 100% confirmed.

The Dragon Cyclone Pro and Bolzzen Commando for $1699-$1899 beats the InMotion and the Segway Max series easily. Better suspension, dual motors, more power etc.

        • have seen after market suspension for sale on aliexpress, no idea if it's any good

I know Lime used to sell off used scooters, Beam may do the same

      • I use to use the beam scooters and they were amazing for my hill inclines as opposed to the neuron scooters which actually would stop on certain parts of my inclines and I had to walk it up.

Would you say that the Max G30L or G30 is closer in terms of specs to the ones beam use? I’m keen to get a G30 but for some reason I associate it with the neuron scooters and wouldn’t do well with my short hill inclines.

Never had issues with the beam scooters before, so I’m trying to find something that’s closest to their model

        • Neuron scooters are absolute turds with solid tyres, no suspension and a whole lot of weight. I believe what Beam uses is much closer to the G30L and uses the same 350W/700W peak rear motor.

  • Is this Gen 1 or 2? I believe there's a big difference.

    • Max Lite seem to be all "gen 2" and speed limited to 30kmh rather than the usual 25kmh out the box.

Speed limit removed Gen 1 will do 30-31kmh, gen 2 around 36kmh. In both cases max speed drops as the battery level drops.

Gen 1 has more torque, useful if you are on the large end of the spectrum.

Anecdotally Gen 2 suffer the melted wires issue from kers more than Gen 1, but just turn the kers down or off.

Will any local stores price match this?

    • contacted a few local stores, will let you know how that turns out.

edit: no good…one of the stores told me they couldn't match because iscoot's price is below their costs. Not sure how that works…eventhough it meets all the T&C for price matching policies.

      • iScoot may well be a grey importer for these, there are quite a few about. The distributor used to have a list of authorised sellers but no longer seem to.

Edit: They have a S/N check on their website for those sold from authorised resellers, that seems to be about all.

  • tempting but since I'm interstate buyer how will the warranty work I wonder?

  • +1

What do you think, which options?

MobileCity ebay store: $950 - $60 code = $890 delivered. Full 12 months manufacturer warranty. Their support said if the product is faulty they will cover shipping costs.

Iscoot: $799 + $25 shipping = $824 delivered. 12 months warranty of frame, 6 months on battery and 3 months on electrical parts. Don't include RTB costs.

    • Well those iScoot terms are well below consumer guarantee levels, so from that sounds like you will be in for a fight on any warranty claims.

MobileCity would win it there for me personally.

      • yea iscoot terms are pretty sketchy. As you said above, its probably grey import.

    • Seen this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/705165

Will be about $836 for those few hours.
