Not a bad price. Probably should price match at JB and use discounted gift card.

    • +8

And/or JB $10 Perks.. just paid $68 for mine!

    • Good idea - I assume it'll work in-store, as when I just tried through their online chat, they said they couldn't due to that being a below cost price

      • +1

What is price match for then?

      • Did it in-store at Chadstone!

  • +6

Since this is Android-powered, this can be modified to the nth degree.

My favourites are ad-free YouTube and a custom home screen that bypasses the default.

    • agree 100%

    • what is nth degree?

    • +2

how to mod to get ad-free YouTube?

      • +12

I use an app called Smart Tube Next (need to side load) but I am sure there are other ways…..

        • +2

+1 for STN. Sponsorblock integration and customizable UI make it the best YT Android TV app.

      • +5

Aren't we all just paying $2.50 via India for YouTube Premium Family accounts so we don't have to fuss about with stuff like this?

        • +3

          Sponsor Block ;)

      • +1

It's simple. You exchange currency for an ad-free experience.

Don't get me wrong, I hack the crap out of everything I own and all my devices stay local - but YouTube is great source of entertainment and education and these "hacks" need to be applied to every device and eventually get bypassed by YouTube/Google/Alphabet.

Pay the $20 bucks a year for 6 accounts and watch on any phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, TV, alarm clock you wish.
Even at friends houses your addition to a queue have no ads.

    • Can anyone tell me how ad-free YouTube compares to Blokada on these devices (I've only every used the Firefox extension, Ad-Blocker for YouTube on my computer)
I bought the Amazon stick on another deal last week but have yet to set it up.
Maybe I should have paid extra and bought the Google device instead.

      • +2

YouTube video ads are served from the same domain as the content you want to watch and so blunt tools like DNS-based adblockers, which just block whole domains from being reached, simply don't work. Smart Tube Next plays videos perfectly whilst skipping all ads because it's coded to do so. It can also skip intros, outros, annoying calls-to-action like 'smashing that like button' etc by seamlessly integrating with the Sponsorblock project (enabled by default and configurable in terms of what is skipped).

You'd still need Blockada or equivalent elsewhere in the OS, but for YouTube STN is perfect at giving you just the content you want to watch with none of the fluff you don't whether you have an adblocker or not.

        • Thanks, I'll check it out.

        • Thanks for the great explanation, wondering is there STN equiv app for mobile, i install STN on mobile but I belive it is a GTV landscape interface..

    • Oh. How can I get rid of youtube ads?

    • What do you mean custom home screen? You can change the way the home screen layout is?

  • +1

You don't need a mobile device with this one?

    • +2

No. Only needs wifi. Can be controlled with the included remote, (which can also power on/off, change input and volume on your tv/soundbar) digital remote on the Google TV app or can just be operated as a regular old Chromecast.

      • +2

Best part is you can seperatly set Power and volume controls to different devices.

        Much better than Roku setup.

  • +1

been waiting for a deal on this thanks OP

  • Do you guys find that the infrared remote power, input and volume doesnt work and you need to keep resetting the remote?

    • +5

      Mine works fine.

      • mine fine too.

Are you using a case on the remote, @ohsotight?

        • No I am not. Dash thing keeps droping off. Rest of the remote works. Looks like I am alone on this!

    • Mine works as expected. I was actually wondering how it transmits, as I can put my finger completely over the front black circle (which I assume is the IR transmitter) and it still works like normal.

      • +2

Input and vol are IR, control the device by WiFi

      • +3

The IR is only for other devices like TV power or volume control if it's not using HDMI-CEC.

Control of the Chromecast is via Bluetooth I believe.

        • that explains it! thanks.

        • +1

I just bought one and am hoping the volume controls actually work on the device if you don't want to use equipment control. The reason I dislike fire tv is because they don't have internal volume control.

          • +1

@philart: It does…I already have one and it controls the volume of the selected input to Iike your normal remote does.

            • @Batapotamus:

input to Iike your normal remote does.

Are you sure? It can only control external volume like TV or AV Receiver.

          • @philart: I don't think it does either.

Probably not the first person with this problem though, maybe there's a software solution you can install to control the media volume.

          • +2

            @philart:

I dislike fire tv is because they don't have internal volume control.

Just checked Google Chromecast TV can assign volume to Chromecast itself but not FireStick

    • Mine has worked fine. I've never had to reset the remote since I set it up over a year ago.

    • Never had that issue.

    • Installed yesterday and found that I can turn the TV Off but not On somehow if I use CEC, still looking for solutions.
      Worked with infrared tho.

      • I haven't heard of it on TV's but worth checking just in case, with some sound bars they have a setting for full off or standby. Obviously when completely off it won't respond to CEC commands to turn back on. Maybe the TV has something similar?

      • yeah some tvs just don't turn on with CEC unfortunately so a normal chromecast is no good. Lucky this one has IR.

    • Yes, but I blame my Hisense TV and/or soundbar configuration. It's a little annoying, but it only fails very infrequently. Resetting is straightforward enough.

I have one of these on each of my TVs (4 total) and it's just the Hisense set that seems to conk out. I've tried swapping the Chromecast devices and remotes between TVs to try to isolate whether it might be a dodgy Chromecast. Problem still persisted, so figured it's either the TV set and/or soundbar that's throwing it. Both expensive things to change and both beyond my care level.

    • I have been experiencing this recently. Other than resetting the remote, I found that adding your phone to the device ("Add a remote") through the old Google TV app on Android seems to "wake up" the actual remote.

So, what I think is happening is that there's some bluetooth interference going on from somewhere.

Merely activating the remote app on my phone made the real remote respond.

      No idea why.

      Haven't retested.

  • +3

I've already got the Vodafone TV would this benefit me any better

    • +3

Probably longer support. Maybe. It's Google after all. It's smoother imo.

    • +4

I have both and they pretty much do the same thing.

      VTV:

Plus: has USB inputs, has inbuilt digital TV tuner with antenna socket, has ethernet port for wired internet connection (bonus if your wifi sucks), remote is nice

Minus: chipset is a bit older so not as fast and smooth as GCwGTV; older version of Android, so lacks support for some official apps like Kayo (can still run via Kodi), RAM management is not so good so can get buggy if you are not careful to always clean the cache and delete unused apps.

      GCwGTV:

Plus: latest version of Android TV, so supports all apps; newer/faster processor so faster/smoother performance, interface is more modern and has lot's of "suggestions" (could also be a minus)

Minus: no USB inputs; no ethernet port; (can buy a USB C dongle for @ $40 that will give you these options), remote is a bit small and fiddly

  • +1

Have this on TV and Firestick 4k max (promo) on UHD monitor, 4k max is faster but no casting.

    • +4

Chromecast wins purely for the casting. Shame that Amazon doesnt have its own form of casting

  • Was thinking to get the second one just to have always on VPN. so I have one for the apps that shouldn't have VPN and one for the apps that need vpn… I know it's over kill… But I wish

    • +4

Sounds like you need smart DNS over a VPN, that sorts out all the region issues on every device in the house.

    • I use the NordVPN app. You can select which apps bypass the vpn eg. ABC, SBS.

      • Wow, will check if such option is available on mine. Thx

    • Build your own smart dns.

  • crazy price. everyone buy this even if you dont have tv now just buy this first

    • +7

"Everyone buy this even if you have a new TV".

Chromecast w/ Google TV > any and all TV OS

    • Is it worth for people who had android tv? Is a shame it has small internal memory.

But the best device by Google in recent times

  • Got one, thanks OP

  • do Good Guys no longer do a credit of 120% of price difference?

  • Really dumb question, but can you watch live tv through it like 7, 9 and 10? Or is it purely for streaming apps and I would have to switch back to Live TV on my Samsung TV. Just wondering if I could use this and not have to use Samsungs crap UI.

    • +3

Yes you can watch, if not available you can download the app from the app store but from what my friend tells me it won't show live AFL

    • Stream only.

Telstra TV with Roku is what you need.

      • +7

SlyGuy repo through Kodi provides live FTA via IPTV as well as live streaming through the major networks apps. No antenna needed and more importantly, no ads!

    • +2

The FTA TV apps take a live stream of their channels over the internet. I don't use an antenna any more.

    • +1

You can watch live but some sports are not available on live on their official app. Only available FTA TV.

    • SlyGuy repo through Kodi provides live FTA via IPTV as well as live streaming through the major networks apps. No antenna needed and more importantly, no ads!

  • +3

For those that might have Harvey Norman gift cards its the same price at HN

  • What's the best usb c hub for this with an ethernet port?

    • I asked this here:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/702473

Result seemed to be the genuine one for $30.

Given the price I bought another mesh node for my wifi instead. Needed better wifi there anyway…

Edit: Maybe you were wanting hub with additional ports, not sure.

      • Yeah wanted the ability to plug drives to it to fully utilise its capabilities. My router is literally 1.5m away from the TV, so I doubt I'd have wifi issues. I suppose $30 for ethernet isn't too bad.

        • You would be suprised how garbo the wifi is on this thing.

    • I bought this one (https://puu.sh/J4TeY/730511c2f8.png) for $17.54 off AliExpress and it works great, but the store selling it no longer exists so I can't link the actual item page. If you can find the same one on there for a good price, I would go for that.

    • I have VAVA USB-C hub no problem with Ethernet and USB but you have to use a more powerful power adapter.

I have another brand didn't work.

  • I have a Samsung Smart Tv Q7 series, will this be any good?

    • +1

If the smart apps on it still works you may not need it unless you want to use it for something else, like Kodi.

  • this vs 4k amazon fire stick?

    • I have both and for the convenience of having all the streaming services through the Google Play store I'd recommend this.

      • The Firestick has WIFI 6 but then the Google TV has ethernet… I've come from a first gen Chromecast to a Firestick 4K max and it's working well.

        • +1

You can also add ethernet to firestick like Google TV no ethernet without adapter.

  • I recently had an internet outage and the GCwGTV was useless. I couldn't get it to connect to my media server without an internet connection. Would the LAN adapter fix that issue?

    • had an internet outage and the GCwGTV was useless.

Is it still connected to WiFi?

      • It won't connect to wifi without internet. It must be sending a ping to test the connection.

        • OK, never try didn't know that.

    • I know Google Wifi operates in the same manner, kills all local network if the internet dies. Unsure if they changed that.

  • I'm getting charged $5.95 for Metro delivery Brisbane. Thought the title said $0 Metro delivery?

    • I am in Sydney and there is no charge. I put some random Brisbane address and still no charge. Not sure why charging you.
