For those wondering apparently these contain Seagate Exos 16TB (according to r/DataHoarder, here & here)

    • +3

Can confirm, I've purchased about 10 of these over the past year, all of them had Seagate Exos 16TB inside. I shuck them and put them in an Orico 8 Bay hard drive enclosure:
      https://www.pccasegear.com/products/41437/orico-8-bay-usb-3-…

      • +1

        that maths doesn't check out

        • Sorry, 2 of them are internal, the rest are in the 8 bay enclosure.

      • +1

So you took 10 drives out of their USB enclosures just to put them back in a USB enclosure? /s

        • +1

          Precisely!

        • +4

If you have ever tried to plug 10 (actually 8) usb drives into your PC at once you will surely appreciate 1x USB connection is much better and your PC OS doesnt freak out :)

      • Honest question, what do you do with 160TB? Movies and tv seasons in HD, VM images?

        • +1

I'm not OP, but to speculate:

There's a media server called Plex. You feed it whatever movies, TV shows or music you have, and it'll make it so that you can watch that stuff anywhere. There's Plex for Android, IOS, Roku, Google TV, Raspberry Pi, Oculus… If your device doesn't support the format it's in, Plex will convert it so that it'll work. It's even got a Spotify knockoff that'll put together a playlist to fit a mood, using your music.

Plex also lets you share out your collection to friends and family. They basically get a version of Netflix which has all of your stuff - TV shows, movies - and will play it wherever. Start Plex, click on movie, watch movie.

It means that rather than just data hoarding for yourself, you're doing it for friends and family, too.

          • @jong: Yeah I’m aware of plex - just keen to hear OP’s use case as 160TB (likely less if they’re raided) is a lot by any measure.

        • I primarily use the drives for Plex + Radarr + Sonarr + Prowlarr.

      • You still have to plug the 8 bay into the PC?
Why not just get a NAS?

        • I have my PC running 24x7 running server stuff.

      • Hi Sarazar,
Regarding the Orico 8 bay HDD enclosure, does your computer show you have 8 drives or 1 drive and is the enclosure hot-swappable?
        Thanks.

        • You can have it show up to 8 drives using a standard JBOD configuration, however, I use Windows Storage Spaces so it shows up as 1 drive pool.
You can add and remove drives to it without having to restart your PC.

why not get real nas and not this junk

        • +2

Because a real NAS has a whole bunch of limitations.
The USB bays connected to a PC gives you the best of all worlds - you can literally do anything that you want with the open PC platform.

          • @Nom: what kind of things are you doing that need all that power?

            • @Budju: I'm doing nothing but storing data. Direct your question to those that actually need the open platform 👍

              • @Nom: I need more details about the data you are keeping. It sounds like a lot

  • +1

I've shucked 8 a year or so ago, they were all exos but these have a newer outer casing, they could prolly also be ironwolf pros, i suppose, either way, good drives.

  • +15

thanks OP bought this for my feet pics collection that's been growing exponentially.

    • +7

      Idk man, 16TB is quite a feat…

    • Feet?? What?

    • +2

bought this for my feet pics collection that's been growing exponentially.

Rather than spend money on more storage just collect pics of small feet - should take less space to store.

      • You're now on a list. If you weren't already on one prior to this comment that is.

        • +3

          You're now on a list.

          What a day!
I post my first ever deal and now I make it onto a list.

          I think I need a lie down.

    • Have you considered re-encoding your feet in a newer format? You could probably cut the size of your collection down by a third. (Assuming PNG format)

  • Hmmm, I need a new HDD and have been looking, I was kinda hoping for a 5.4k drive.. Are these hot/loud once shucked? How about not shucked?

    • +1

Exos are loud - designed for enterprise use. Shucked/not shucked they're still loud. A thin plastic case doesn't stop much.

      • Okay thanks, I might pass then.

        • People have different definitions of loud. If it's in a PC case and you're not too sensitive to noise, it's not noticeable.

          • +2

@Caped Baldy: In a NAS, in a cupboard that is full brick and solid core door - can still hear them chatting away. They are loud.

Search Exos + noise level. It’s full of comments.

            • @Chuppa: Actually, you've reminded me of my NAS downstairs which is indeed quite loud. Seems to be constantly accessing data and making noise.

I've got a 10TB Seagate and 16TB WD in my main rig which aren't noticeable over the GPU.

          • @Caped Baldy: It'll be at my parents place in their office, likely just on the desk so I won't take the risk. Will keep in mind for my own setups though.

  • Is this better than Western Digital Elements Desktop Hard Drive?

    • Is this better than Western Digital Elements Desktop Hard Drive?

Other than being $1.61 cheaper - I can't find any comparison listed anywhere that gives the drives' specifications.

    • The WD one is easy to crack open, havent tried it with the seagate one.
The WD one you will need the tape to block the 3rd volt line. Not sure about seagate.
      Can anyone comment?

      • I've shucked 5 if the previous model of this drive (different plastic case). Just had to unscrew the USB adaptor once shucked and they were good to go.

        • Is it easy to shuck from the plastic case?

          • @congo: The previous model was just clipped in along the side (with about 100 clips). Wasn't hard. Not sure on this one. No doubt there's something on reddit.

      • Pain in the ass compared to my books but not hard if you’re ok with being destructive. The my books have way less clips and a way looser casing.

    • Yes and no. There is a quality drive inside but don't expect a hard drive to be better than another. Have backups!

Seagate had some dodgy 3TB drives about 5 years ago but my preference is seagate for drives more than 10TB. But I do have a 16TB in my desktop PC.

  • I wish these were $250

    • +4

      This is ozbargain, not /r/DisneysAladdin

  • Price up to $415.28

  • and now it's $414.54.

Is this something to do with the exchange rate or is their some type of magic Amazon algorithm?

  • Oof, $850 now. I knew it was expired but I thought maybe it go up like $50 max..
