    HODL…….nggrhhh!

  • +6

man that is a good price. only ~$120 more than I paid for my 6800 18 months ago. I need a second card for my other machine, will hold off though as don't really need for another 6 weeks or so, happy to gamble on more cuts across the board as new gen approaches.

      • +1

old or new is irrelevant, the only question for me for the secondary machine is does it perform to the level I need at the price point I want. If a 10 year old card could do that I would happily buy a 10 year old card.

        • -5

are you a Moore's law denier sir

      • +7

        There's newer better tech out?…

    • what happens in 6 weeks?

      • EOFY so work quietens down. Holiday then time to play and rebuild/upgrade older computers.

        • I don't know why I had my hope up all of sudden and I also do not know why I am now so disappointed…

  • Very good price

It was at that moment that jimmy knew he messed up buying a 3080 for $1200

    • +12

Spare a thought for Bob, who bought a 3070 for $1,400

      • +1

I was that Bob last year since I need a gpu for a new pc kinda badly-ish :(
Granted it was a pretty nice 3070 at least

      • If Bob bought a 3070 a year ago, he should have at least mined back a bit?

    • Only $30 more for a card with essentially the same performance but with added DLSS is probably worth it.

      • +1

Where do you get a 3080 12gb for $1200 flat?

        • You can't, cheapest was $1250

    • i was bob's uncle who sold him a 3080 for $2.3k

  • +2

Paid this price for 6700XT a year ago fml :')

    • +8

But you got to use it for a year which should make the extra cost worthwhile.

    • same here, less than 1 year actually

  • How's Gigabyte been for AMD this series? I recall seeing some negative feedback regarding the design of the 3000 cards.

    • I’ve had 2 of these, both suffered from coil whine. They were pretty quiet but I couldn’t stand the random noise coming out of it so I ended up getting 6900 toxic.

Toxic seems to be a bit louder but the noise is constant so it’s not annoying 🤣 it also has better performance from what I’ve noticed so far and it stays much cooler, I didn’t see it above 65C where the Gigabyte was hitting 75C+ All the time

      • Did you turn off zero rpm?

        • No, I the comparison I gave was on stock Settings.

  • +1

How much lower do people think 6900XT can go?
Under $1K in a few months?
Deciding on whether to jump on this or HODL…

Edit: I will HODL until after new gen are released.

    • -6

Yeah, $600-800 by the end of the year but there will be a whole new gen by then.

      • It should be released, who knows if there will be stock to drive prices of this gen down.

      • +5

        Lol, $600?? Not a chance.

        • Why not? If the 7900xt and 4090 will be at least 2 times the performance plus more features then 600-800 isnt that far fetched.

          Im assuming mining profitability sucks.

          • @Jtam01: I think you drank the cool aid…
It might have double the something, but can almost gauruntee it won't be double the FPS.

    • +1

It's under us RRP, but this card was overpriced due to landing in a time of shortages.

I think 1k is very possible, but likely after next gen is released.

    • $900 when next gen release

  • +1

Is it worth getting this if I can price protect for a year? coming up from a 5700xt.

    • +1

I’d say not. The 6900XT is a top end card. Even at this price, the price-performance ratio remains questionable. Next generation GPUs are around the corner. You will be able to get 6900XT performance in the medium tier then. Possibly also with better features like DLSS and proper Raytracing support in case of NVIDIA. And even RDNA3 may finally get AMDs Raytracing act together.

      • And better performance/Watt and less noise .

      • The question then is when will the medium tier cards come out? I wouldn't be surprised if a 4070/6700xt is over $1k at launch and we're probably not going to get them this year. All for what, a 20% gain over the 6900XT? And losing out on 6 months worth of gaming in the meantime?

AMD doesn't need DLSS, it has RSR. Which considering that it isn't reliant on developers implementing is pretty significant. Ray tracing is the only thing I'd be hoping for from AMD, but it's not the end of the world not having it. It's computationally very expensive and doesn't really deliver that much.

Plus there's that a 5700xt still gets $400 used at the moment. It won't be worth anything by year end.

        • The way I look at it, buy under my business :
          10 gst back
          Tax 30%
Sell 5700 xt for $400 now

Price protect in a few months time.

I should be well ahead whilst still having a decent card no?

Another question is my AMD ryzen 3500x going to bottleneck this card?

        • +1

Not sure if you can still fetch $400 for a 5700XT. You’d have to find a pretty uninformed buyer. Conversely, the 5700XT is still plenty fast for another 6-12 months of gaming.

My point is: the 6900XT has comparatively little to offer for a 5700XT owner right now. It’s faster alright, but it’s also expensive und power-hungry, ie. noisy. And it doesn’t have next-generation features. No, driver-level upscaling like RSR isn’t remotely as good as DLSS. And neither is FSR 2.0.

          • @maxbon: FSR 2.0 looks pretty good to me… and the Hardware Unboxed team:

          • @maxbon: Thanks Maxbon. This is what I am looking for. Might hold it off and go for a whole system upgrade next year (I think my 3500x cpu will bottleneck the card anyway).

Would this heat up a house in winter? Asking for a friend.

    • +3

not a much as a RTX 3090 or the upcoming RTX4090 (space heater edition 600W)

      • +3

LOL yep most Aussies won't be able to keep the electricity on long enough to keep these monsters powered.

    • 3080ti without an undervolt keeps the 3.5 x 3.5 room nice and toasty when gaming. Saving tonnes of money not having to run heating, Nvidia don't get enough props for this feature.

    • +1

Haven't got the 6900XT but I'm still rocking a R9 290X which has similar power consumption as the 6900XT and it heats up my room within 30 mins (3.3m * 3.3m), particularly useful in this cold weather.

  • good time to grab if you can claim on tax this year :-) got this card a few months ago for $1360 good for 4k in BFV and Elden Ring has been fun!

    • +1

Tell the ATO you need it to work from home doing data entry position. Instant write-off?

  • +2

Happy wiith my 100w power sipping rx6600 plays everyting i want it too… i will upgrade it when it doesnt.. probably to a RX8600 or RX7600… cheaper to upgrade often vs buying the top of the range and holding out

    • That used to be the case. Unfortunately, the mid-tier cards have moved sideways in performance/$.

Thankfully, upscaling tech has come a long way. DLSS often looks as good as native resolution. A mid-range GPU can often push 1440p@60 or 4K@60. You’ll need an NVIDIA card though. The lack of a true DLSS competitor is what makes me hesitant to go AMD.

  • FYI there's a few others which are also 'on sale' with free shipping and no surcharge:
    - Asus AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT TUF GAMING $1199
    - PNY NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 XLR8 REVEL EPIC-X RGB 10GB LHR with free shipping

    • +2

Nice find. I'd take that Tuf 6900 for the extra $30.

I'm out for now, waiting on my ex demo 6800xt to arrive, I caved…

  • This is like watching a short squeeze on a tech stock

  • lol what's with the price drops on weekends? I've noticed they haven't dropped prices on past weekends. Usually they left the bait out hoping the hodler would bite
