I've been on the lookout for a good USB-C monitor to try and cut down on the cable clutter on my desk.

This seems like a good deal for a QHD USB-C monitor at 40%. No code required.

It's part of the Dell EoFY sale, so not able to use some codes to reduce it further. I was able to get a further 7% off unique code through my workplace, but your luck with other codes may vary.

  • What's the benefits of a usb c monitor? What cables is it getting rid of?

    • +7

removes the need to have power cable going to laptop?

        • +1

You only need one power socket rather than two. They can fill up pretty quickly at a desk.

        • well it is if you dont like having bulky power bricks around your desk

    • +7

If using laptop then no need for laptop to have it's individual power as it can be charged/powered through the usb-c. Can also have USB device(s) connected to monitor so no need to plug/unplug from laptop. Basic dock functions I guess. Super handy for my usage.

    • For me, my laptops (work and personal) are both USB-C power cables.

By going to this, I don't need to have a hub between my laptop and the monitor (or the HDMI straight into the laptop).

    • +5

USB C monitors usually feature USB docks of some sort, so you can use one cable to connect to:
      Monitor
USB Keyboard/Mouse (although some may simply go wireless here)
      Webcam
      Audio out
      Power Delivery.

    • +1
      • power to the laptop
      • display signal to the monitor
      • USB ports on the monitor means no need to unplug stuff (use one port for keyboard/mouse combo, the other for a webcam)

Not needing a hub does not just get rid of cables, but a lot of people don't realise that these hubs consume ~13-14 Watts. So if you use a 65W PD charger, your laptop may get just over 50 Watts, which in some cases causes it to complain that it's not enough.

      • USB ports on the monitor means no need to unplug stuff

If my work Thinkpad goes to sleep connected to my S2722QC, I need to unplug+replug my keyboard into the front USB-A port for the laptop to detect it again. Not sure if that’s a monitor issue or a laptop issue. Actually just noticed there’s a second USB-A on the back, I’ll try that next time.

        • +1

Check monitor settings using monitor buttons. There will be an option to send power to usb port even when monitor goes to standby.

        • Weird. I have had a similar issue with my hub (on a different monitor), where it won't detect the keyboard/mouse dongle in the hub and I need to move the dongle to the machine itself. I thought it had to do with Windows security. I haven't had this on the Type-C Dell monitor (yet).

      • Thank you for that. Do the peripherals, e.g keyboard, that are plugged into the monitor switch as inputs are switched between two different laptops/PCs that are plugged into the monitor?

        • +1

It works with whichever machine is plugged into the Type-C port of the monitor. Because that's what the connection goes through.

    • you plug into a laptopt it gets rid of all of the cables it will charge your laptop, give you display and ports, its a one cable solution.

    • If the monitor has a USB hub in it, you can also leave your peripherals plugged into the monitor, and then "dock" different devices into the monitor and gain instant use of those peripherals.

Can anyone recommend a 32" or 34" ultrawide in EOFY sales? Purely for work/productivity.

    • I'm after one, too.

I don't know if I should get two 32" 4K, and sell my Alienware 34", or get another 34".

    • I've been using LG 32KG650F. 165Hz. 2K. 2HDMI. 1 DP & 1 3.5mm headphone out.

It's pretty good for both work and gaming. I've got my google tv attached to it as well and image quality is pretty good. It also has 3.5mm audio jack out so can connect a speaker in case u want to turn a screen into a smart tv as this was what i wanted to do. Work monitor in day. Gaming evening. And movies at night for the room when u dont wana sit in the lounge :)

    • The LG 32UN88A should suit your needs. It normally retails for $999 however you can get it for $697 from this deal.

    • If you do screen sharing have a think about UWD. I have a 34”, but reverting back to dual 28” HPs due to constantly having to either shift windows or use my laptop screen.

  • Anyone know if this will support daisy chaining for a 3 monitor setup off a laptop ? To save screwing around with expensive hubs or adapters …

    • +2

It doesn't support it. That's a pretty "premium" feature, unfortunately.

I know it is supported on the higher-end LGs.

Hopefully I am wrong, but a quick Google tells me it can't.

Would be super handy if you could power it via single USB-C cable to an ajacent screen.

Can’t speak for windows but potentially worth hodling for the S2722QC which regularly comes up at $369 if you run a Mac - it scales beautifully, couldn’t imagine going back to QHD.

    • M1 Mac? If so, could you please try unplug it and re plug-in to the monitor to see how well it resumes?

      • I run an M1 MacBook Pro which I take with me during the day and plug in at night so I plug/unplug a fair bit, never had any issues

        • Could you try plug in to one port for 5 seconds, unplug it, immediately plug it into that same port? Basically, avoid having a long delay / gap between un-plug and the following plug-in.

My MBP(Intel based) is fine. The M1 one I have, for some reason is far less reliable.

          • @netsurfer: Just checked - can confirm it works fine for me but I have read that M1 macs can be fiddly with external monitors

    • Read plenty of articles which say macOS scales better to 1440p rather than 4k for 27". Interesting your experience suggests otherwise.

      • From my experience, the grayscale text rendering of newer macOS versions means that a HiDPI display is imperative, even if it doesn't provide perfect 2x scaling.

      • I think you've got it the other way around. I think you are referring to this?

This M1 Mac display hack is a must for 1440p monitors

        • I don't have an M1 but been using my MB Pro on a 4k LG 27 since I got the Mac in 2020, no issues. Use a USB C to displayport

          • @iMacca: anyway to get the screen to not be in clone mode if the Dell monitor isn't on the list of supported models for Dell Display Manager?

    • +1

Seems like $400 might be the low price now:

The bot mentions it here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/695703

      Latest deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/706603

    • Seem ok with a macbook and QHD for the OP monitor. I'd usually choose 4k but not everyone needs that high res

I noticed the S2722QC isn't in the list of supported monitors either, how is DDM working for you?
      https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000191819/dell-disp…

  • Do you get a quality USB cable with it?

    • +1

Yea. I bought one during the last deal. Reasonable length USB-C cable. About 1m.

    • It's a thick\stiff boy. Wouldn't use it to charge my phone

  • Saw this. Would have been nice if it is S2722QC.

    • i bought the 4K one at $400 something last week. not sure if it is a good price + 1.5% cashback (better than nothing)

  • Is there one that Powers monitor with USB C like Huawei monitor?

  • +2

Better off getting the 4k version for the same price refurbed

  • Will this work with the surface laptop 3?

    • Yes

  • +5

Tried applying VIVID5 on the S2722QC and it brings it down to 400.76

  • Looking for a 24" QHD IPS if anyone's seen a good EOFY deal.

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

  • Thanks OP put in a price protection claim (paid $339 which was already a pretty decent price).

I picked this up for a mate for WFH, he's running a macbook. The monitor doesn't show up in the list on the supported models list for the Dell Display Manager for macOS - he's just got it duplicating the laptop and reckons can't get different screens happening. Wondering if any workaround or manual drivers/apps?

Always different with Macs, but neither of us though it was worth the extra $300-400 for an Ultrasharp model.
He's only got one monitor plugged in but is in clone mode. Worth noting that:

Macs with USB-C (DP Alt Mode) do not support monitor Daisy-Chaining. When connected in a Daisy-Chain setup, both monitors will be in clone mode.

    Thanks,

  • Anyone want the $15 coupon I got in my email this morning? First to reply below will take it.

How does this compare with dell S2721DS ? Is this one better ?

I had the 2721DS which broke and looking for a replacement.

    Your inputs pls

  • worth mentioning the existence of USB-C on a monitor doesn't guarantee it does 'one cable for power, usb and display'. It may just be a usb-c hub and you need 2 cables.

you need to look for Alternate mode, ie for this monitor you're all good, because it has this in the specs:

    1. USB Type-C upstream port (Alternate mode with DisplayPort 1.2, Power Delivery up to 65 W)
  • How to use one laptop to extend to two of these monitors? The USB-C cable is between laptop and Monitor 1, what about Monitor 2?

    • Look up display port MST (multi steam transport) the dell site, has something about it, not sure if this monitor supported but could be. Daisy chain.

    • +1

If you have a deep pocket:

      1. If your laptop / desktop has a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port AND your monitors support daisy chain, connect one Thunderbolt port to the monitor (with daisy chain support), the monitor would have a Thunderbolt out port to connect to the second monitor.
      2. If your laptop / desktop permits USB-C/alt-mode with MST support (note: Apple does NOT allow this), connect one USB-C/alt-mode port to monitor supporting MST, then connect from USB-C/alt-mode DP out on that monitor to the second monitor.

If you don't have a deep pocket:

If your laptop / desktop has multiple Thunderbolt OR multiple USB-C/alt-mode ports, connect 1 to 1 monitor and another one to another monitor.

      Note:

      • M1 does NOT support dual external monitors. You need at least a M1 Pro CPU.
      • Do NOT assume a PC laptop / desktop that has USB-C/alt-mode support would support MST.
      • Do NOT assume USB-C monitors support USB-C/alt-mode MST (i.e. this one doesn't). Most don't.
      • There is a hack to get second external display going for M1 - DisplayLink, but that's not ideal.

Too messy and too hard? Welcome to the dark side of USB-C.

  • mine lasted a week and went permanent black screen which was disappointing. Returned &.hoping for another good deal on a 27DGF to match my current
