There's also talk of a slower A series being release in the next few years.

      • +6

Dunno why downvotes. This was good news!

        • I was thinking the same. I can't recall where I read it, but it was only in the last week. Shows that Samsung are not going to keep it as a Premium Product.

          • +1

@BewareOfThe Dog: My $150 Samsung A8 is going well and there's like 10 models above it. Don't always need the latest and greatest.

            • -1

@Caped Baldy: Lol 150 dollar A8. Didn't even know what an A8 was. Guessing it's the type of phone you buy at wollies and give to your grandmother who is new to using phones.

  • +2

Pretty crappy offer. $500 for an immaculate Pixel 6 Pro

    • gave me 950+500 for my ultra which is about what i paid so I will end up paying 500 odd for my z fold 3. Still thinking if i should wait for Fold 4

  • +4

I don't understand foldables. It makes sense as all in one device for internet browsing and multimedia, but I would rather carry the smallish phone in my pocket during the day and have a comfort of tablet/laptop at home. YMMV

    • +22

I was fairly unsure about them but last year I was looking at buying the Pixel 6 Pro, when I had an opportunity to snag a brand new Fold3 for $1400 so I pulled the trigger on it, and now I'm not sure I can ever go back.

It took me a week or so to get used to the thickness in my pocket but now I don't notice it at all, and if you commute and like to read (or consume any media) it's really unbeatable.

I'm interested to see what happens to the foldable market over the next few years. I hope it keeps momentum because I truly don't want to go back to a normal size device now that I have what is essentially an iPad mini sized tablet in my pocket all the time.

      • +1

Do you notice the fold much? That was really off putting to me with the Fold 2 a friend had, and haven't looked at them since

        • +1

You don't notice the crease at all.

          • +4

@BewareOfThe Dog: You will when it de-laminates. I haven't found a Fold user who it hasn't happened to yet.

            • @havabeer: LOL. Mine has a bubble in it. This is one issue, in that you can't easily buy a replacement for it, unless you go back to Samsung direct. I have been told they replace the laminate at no charge. I also have the extra coverage, to obtain a replacement for $299.

I also read that the new flip4 had been tested for 100,000 bends successfully.

              • @BewareOfThe Dog: You get a floppy hinge at 400,000 folds on the Flip.

              • @BewareOfThe Dog: Do you mean the screen protector? After about 10 weeks mine started coming off in the crease, so I removed it. No issues since then. I also don't use the s pen. Actual screen is otherwise fine with no scratches or marks and holding up fine (6 months ownership).

            • @havabeer:

You will when it de-laminates. I haven't found a Fold user who it hasn't happened to yet.

That's just the screen protector. Mine started to pop up at the top after a few months. Samsung replaced it for free on the spot at their service centre here in Brisbane.

              • @eug: Ohh which service centre in Brisbane was this please

                • @davenpru: It was Tecworks, they're near the airport. I called them up first, they said they didn't have any on hand at the moment but would order some in. A few days later they let me know it arrived, I went in, they swapped it on the spot.

Not at all. When you look at the screen front-on you'll only notice it if you're looking for it. It's more obvious from a side angle, like if you're looking at a friend using their Fold.

It's like fingerprints or dust on your phone screen. There's probably plenty of ugly prints or dust on it right now, but when you use the phone you don't actually see them as you're not looking out for it.

      • +3

I'm sure the other commuters noticed that thickness in your pocket lol

        • +2

Is that a Samsung in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

        • We didn't.

    • +3

When you start using one, it creates a whole new way of doing things. Plus I no longer need to bring my iPad to work with me.

    • but I would rather carry the smallish phone in my pocket during the day and have a comfort of tablet/laptop at home.

Yeah same here. 'Pocket fit' is a key criteria for me which is why I skipped the Pixel 6 and bought an older 5 instead. So much lighter and compact and is almost unnoticeable in my pocket…

      • +11

This all sounds a lot like many many years ago when Samsung brought out its first 'gigantic' 5.3" phone and people thought it was farcically large, like holding a brick up to your face. And not as sleek in the pocket.

        How times change.

        • +1

This all sounds a lot like many many years ago when Samsung brought out its first 'gigantic' 5.3" phone and people thought it was farcically large

Well those people weren't me or anyone I know. I had the Samsung Note when it was new 10 years ago, it was 147mm, my pixel 5 is 145mm, and the Pixel 6 pro is 164mm almost 20mm taller. That is a lot in a pocket and in a hand when you are already approached comfortable maximums.
So there is fixed size somewhere just under 150mm which is perfect.

    • +9

I for one went down the foldable route and will never go back. The ability to fold out from phone form factor to a mini tablet is insanely useful. But you won't realise its usefulness unless you actually use it.

    • +2

There is the Z Flip 3 as well which folds into half of a full size phone. When I first got it for myself I let the missus try it for a few days. Cut to a week later I had to buy another one for myself since she wouldn't give it back. It's one of the few phones that will fully fit into the shallow pockets on women's pants.

      • Picked up one of these a few weeks back when they dropped $500. Form factor just makes so much sense for me. And OEM real-leather cases dropping to 50% was a bonus.
Not bothered about the 0.1 inch outer screen increase or whatever on the upcoming Flip4. And I don't game or have 5G so most of the power is fine for me. In fact, I run it in power-saving mode all the time.

      • Opposite experience here. I got the Z Flip3, and it remains sitting in the drawer. I don't like how chunky it is when folded. I also wish it could be flipped open with one hand easily, via a spring-loaded button like the old flip phones. Instead, you need to use both hands to prize it open. The word "flip" in the name is misinformation!

for someone spending a lot of time in public transport for commute and if you can sit down most of the time, it is highly recommended.

      I don't understand foldables.

Which is fine IMHO - this isn't a mainstream phone and will likely not be for most people.

Might pull the trigger on the next iteration (hopefully they improve on the screen crease)

if ur looking for a high end camera, this is not for you. if not this is a great crossover device.

    • if ur looking for a high end camera, this is not for you.

Here's a blind test between the Fold 3, S21 Ultra, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

      The results might surprise you.

What tech you tubers never show is poor low light shutter speed performance resulting in motion blur. It's all over the net.

        • -1

Or maybe it doesn't affect everyone, and only people who take photos of moving subjects in low light will notice.

When light levels are low, there are two things you can do. Lower the shutter speed to let in more light, or turn up the ISO and increase noise. So you'll have to choose between motion blur and smear from excessive noise reduction.

There is no conspiracy amongst youtubers. They didn't all get together and decide "None of us shall talk about low-light motion blur". It could just be something that isn't an issue for them.

          • @eug: Um no.. It's the way Samsung processes photos. Have a read of forums and nearly every Samsung is incapable of capturing even the slightest moving object (kid) in low light decently.

            • -2

              @Exec-Matrix:

Um no.. It's the way Samsung processes photos.

Mmm, mention "motion blur" and "low light" to any photographer and see what they reckon.

              • @eug: Don't need to talk to a photographer to figure out how Samsung processes photos.

  • The novelty wears off pretty quick for some, I had Fold 2 and liked it despite lots of short comings, I was eager to see what Fold 3 would bring and unfortunately it didn't change much really. I sold both of them and got S21 Ultra and really liked it and then got S22 Ultra which is even better. I don't think I would buy a fold again unless there are some significant changes.

    • Fold 4 has a much better camera, similar to what's in the S21 Ultra, from what I've read..

      • I hope it does, given the premium that Samsung charges for this device it should include it.

  • Do you reckon we could get this trade-in deal to work for the S22 Ultra?

    • Yes according to one of OP's responses above.

  • Anyone have a JB perks voucher I can stack please? :)

  • cool phone and cool tech but im gonna give it another 5 years before I consider trying one

  • +1

I'm really enjoying mine. Biggest let down is probably the camera, it is good but for the price I would expect better.

Not many reviews comment on the speakers which are really good for a phone. They get very loud with good clarity.

With the screen, I've tried (just to see) and I cannot go back to a small normal sized one.

    • What's wrong with the camera? Actual results or the specs? I went from a Z Fold 3 to S22U and with normal pics it's comparable.

  • -1

For those who are interested in the camera, here's a blind test between the Z Fold 3, S21 Ultra, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

    The results might surprise you.

  • I've always disliked large phones. I dabbled with the Galaxy Notes several times but found them too bulky for my pockets, so I've always stuck with the smaller models like the S21, Pixel 4, etc.

The Fold and Fold 2 didn't look interesting enough for me, but when the Fold 3 came out I just wanted to see what the fuss was about. I was SO DAMN CERTAIN that I would find it too bulky for everyday use that I bought both the Fold 3 and Flip 3 (for the preorder bonuses) with the intention of going back and forth between them for two months then selling the Fold.

After a week on the Fold 3 I was sold. I never used the Flip at all. Once I got used to being able to instantly have a larger screen, I couldn't go back. Browsing webpages, PDFs, remote desktop, looking at photos.. everything feels so much less constricted on a wider screen.

I also realised that the bulkiness issues I had with the Note was the width, not the thickness. A wide flat slab in my pocket against my thigh or butt stands out more than a narrower thicker phone, which makes sense.

The front screen took some getting used to, being 3 credit cards narrower than an iPhone 12 Mini. I think having it a little wider would make it easier to type on. It's not enough to make me want to switch back to a normal phone though.

  • Can I trade I my broken phone? Screen broken.

    • yes

      • -1

What if, I don't return the phone?

  • +1

I like my fold a lot. I normally want to upgrade when something new comes out but I've yet to have had that feeling.
I must say though that the ipad is a much better size for note taking and general tablet use. It's advertised as replacing both but it's more of a gigantic phone than a little tablet imho. Typing is hard on the little screen too.

I plan on keeping this for the next 4 years by keeping it charging to 85%. It will be hard going back to a normal phone one day!

    • btw there might be a sitting that limits the battery charge to 80%, at least on my s22 ultra so possibly on the fold too.

    • I doubt in the long term charging to 85% will make any big difference.

      • What makes you say that?

        • All batteries degrade. Id rather use the full 100% battery now than worry about something that will inevitably happen in 3 years time.

  • +1

Being a long time Nokia Communicator user during the stone ages I was pretty sure I'd get the Fold when it was revealed but eventually found it much convenient to carry 2 phones with me.

One for multimedia/camera and one for calls/other functions. Also don't have to worry about the battery life :)

  • So I take it as folks in here take advantage of trade in bonus $500 without sending their phones in? If that’s the case, would jb hifi nullify the bonus $500 trade in voucher?

  • Says my S9+ is "worthless/has no trade value". Does this mean I couldnt trade it in?

    • you are right

    • It's a sham the whole trade in thing. They want last seasons premium model without any issues that you paid 2k for and only then they'll give you 500 for it. Similar to the Samsung trade in scam.

  • I was hoping I could use my iPhone 5S as the trade in phone as it showed up on their list but it’s only from iPhone 8 or SE that they say the phone has any trade in value

It would be great if I could still use my 5S and get the $500

If so I’d pull the trigger even though Folding phones don’t really appeal to me

    • Why would you waste $1500 on a folding phone if you don't want one?

  • Got it for 1840 @JB Phone(1999) + Case( 59$) - 500 trade in bonus - 490 ( note 20 ultra trade in)

  • Just out of curiosity regarding if one was to purchase this and opt in for the $99 Mobile Extras Plan - if JB were to run out of stock of the Fold3 say 3 months after the Fold4 was released, would you be able to get a 4 under the pay $249 and get an equivalent phone back? If so, it would mean getting the Fold4 for a reasonable price if a trade-in is applied to this deal if someone wanted to switch later down the track.
