The Sony WH-1000XM5 hit the local market on 14 June and I've been keeping an eye out for a great deal, after I picked up the previous generation WH-1000XM4 for only $351 shortly after its release, in 2020 (thanks Ozbargain - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/558941).

Whilst not as epic as that deal, I worked out that with Cash Rewards' 10% cashback offer on Sony Store Australia Online purchases (EDIT - seems that Sony don't include the GST within the cashback calculation), it brings the price down to $498.09 (once you receive the cashback in your Cash Rewards account).

The deal becomes much more attractive if you have an American Express issued credit card as once you log in to your Amex portal and enrol in the offer, you will receive $75 credit back to your Amex, upon spending $500 or more. This is a targeted offer but whenever someone posts these offers on Ebay, my Amex always seems to have them as an offer I can 'save to card'. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/699629

After the receiving the $75 cashback to your Amex, you've picked up the awesome new WH-1000XM5 for only $423.09 delivered. The $75 cashback from Amex expires tomorrow so be quick.

Cheers.

Mod: Prices in title should not include post-cashback pricing.

I did this when the XM5 were first released.
    It doesn't include GST.
So you will only get $49.91 cash back.
With the AMEX $75, still makes it a mad offer.

I got mine last week and I'm loving them!

    • +3

Awesome - glad you're loving them.

In terms of GST being included in the cashback calculation, that's a bit disappointing as the Cashreward's Terms and Conditions for the Sony store, doesn't explicitly mention GST is excluded which would indicate it is included https://www.cashrewards.com.au/sony#coupons

If you compare it to The Good Guys Terms and Conditions, you'll note that it explicitly mentions the cashback doesn't include the GST on the purchase. https://www.cashrewards.com.au/the-good-guys

Cashback is ineligible on Apple, ASKO, Miele, AEG, Neff, Bertazzoni, FFalcon, La Germania, Loewe, Playstation 5, Playstation 5 Digital Edition, Xbox Series X 1TB, gift card purchases, negotiated deals (phone/email/chat), purchases via The Good Guys Commercial website, home services, concierge, delivery, GST.

@tightarse could you please weigh-in on this? Unless I'm missing something, shouldn't we be receiving the Cashback calculated on the purchase amount including GST? It's a bit unfortunate if not, as your terms on the Sony store don't exclude it, and I've made a purchase based on the belief it does. I've taken a screenshot https://ibb.co/j8NkHwj

      • +1

Hi and thanks for the tag. We call out the exclusion if the store specifically asks us to. If they don't, or if we're unsure if they exclude GST from cashback, it's still stated as a possible exclusion here. It's impossible to keep abreast of over 2000 stores and how each one reports transactions. There are some (that I won't name) that used to exclude GST but now include it. Hope this helps.

        • +2

Thanks mate. Appreciate you responding and so promptly too. Fair call but perhaps some feedback I can pass on as the 'Cashback Tips' is automatically hidden (most of the hints) by default which is why I didn't think to expand it. Worth potentially considering having it not auto hidden as I don't think it necessarily 'pollutes' the UI of the deal page.

        • I used to do all my cashback with cashrewards, but I try to not use it where I can now. This change happened without really any notification, just my cashbacks were all 10% less and I was more or less told read the website better by support. Pretty poor communication, and "impossible to keep abreast" is weak sauce, so what, we the consumer need to do that instead? Frustrating experience

          • +5

@tdonovic: No change has happened and a lot of our stores have always reported ex GST, as they do for all cashback providers. This is not a function of the cashback site but rather the merchant. We cannot control how they report transactions to us. Sorry to hear you're disappointed.

    • @tightarse sorry if I tagged you again, unsure if my tagging in the post below worked :)

    • Could you please share your thoughts on the ear caps? I'm wearing glasses so I'd love to have them cover the ears instead of "sitting" on them.

    • Hey, what are you comparing them to?

  • +3

Thanks for the reminder, I decided not to take the offer last time this came up, but I've since sat on my XM3's and broken the slider. Lol.

Take them overseas and get an additional $49.81 off through TRS refund - bringing to $373.28

  • +5

Currently using the XM4 and loving it. I heard there are not many noticeable improvements in the XM5.
I will wait for their next version as long as my xm4 serves me well.

    • +5

Way better call quality if that's important to you. It is for me hence looking to upgrade

      • +5

Every model has increased its call quality, but still been terrible. Does that mean xm5 is passable now?

        • Not really. Still catching up to the competition (Bose)

          • +3

@tharlow: Do you have the XM3? I have both Bose 700 and XM5 and I can tell you call quality on XM5 is insanely good. It removes so much background noise and still have clear voice in normal phone calls.

Using MS Teams, there is no background noise at all because partnered with Microsoft AI noise reduction.

            It’s much better than Bose.

  • +3

been waiting for an XM deal, but this one isnt for me

  • +25

XM5's dont fold which is a deal-breaker for me.

    • +3

Agreed, such a step backwards. Everything else seems to be awesome

      • There's nothing awesome about 30 mm drivers.

        • Only going by reviews I have read/seen - they all seem to be very positive irrespective of the size of the drivers

          • @fatal3rror: I made the mistake of buying the XM4's based on the glowing reviews of their audio quality, including What Hi-Fi, who's opinion I actually used to respect. Returned them the next day.

            • +1

@elektron: Oh, negged by the fanbois… Nice!

              • +2

@elektron: i actually had the same opinion as you. I have the xm3 and the audio quality is not good. I skipped the XM4 when i heard the quality was not improved, luckily i never trusted what hifi.

However i am hearing that the xm5 actually improved on audio quality, so i might get these

                • -1

@kitro: Older Sony headphones sounded better, especially MDR-1ABT, although most of there pre-XM cans were good, including the first two H.ear On series, but very few people had heard of them, let alone bought them.

Then Sony added class-leading ANC, tweaked the sound signature to please the masses rather than audiophiles, and cornered the mass market. Pure marketing genius.

    • wtf?

      • +3

Probably because of several complaints around the xm4 folding joints breaking for a lot of people. Personally been using it for over a year and had no issues, but then again I don't travel with them or fold them all the way that much.

    • +1

XMs over $250 is a deal breaker for me.

  • I've only checked Amazon and JB HI-FI and both have the release date of 1/7/2022.

How are people getting the XM5 already?

    • +3

Xm5 been out for a while just scarce for first batch

    • +1

Yeah I have been checking on Sony, Amazon and JB, and even Sony's website was only open for preorder and the launch day was said to be 29/6… Surprise me now it is now available for order!

    • Yes. Got mine from Sony last week with cash rewards and $75 from Amex. Good deal. Nice upgrade from second generation version.

    • +1

I pre-ordered at launch paying partner price. It’s awesome. Got it for over a week and loving it.

  • 4 reports already :)

    • +2

Bc the price in OP’s title shouldn’t include the amount we get from cashback and AMEX

    • +1

Sorted - hopefully it's acceptable now. I've left it as $418.20 delivered until @tightarse responds about GST on cashback.

EDIT - Just saw tightarse's comment so I've updated it to $423.09.

  • Anyone have an idea on delivery times? I'm flying out on Thursday morning, hoping it'll get to me by Wednesday so I could claim TRS on it too. Feeling doubtful. =/

    • Don't count on it. Got their refurb xm4 on eBay on 13th. Received them on the 15th. So 5 working days. I reckon even you place an order now, earliest you'd get them is on the Thursday.

  • +1

Title price should be before cashback.

    • +3

Fixed - my apologies. Don't know if this was worth negging the whole deal though mate. Bit harsh?

EDIT - Thank you for reconsidering - much appreciated.

  • Have the xm4s. I'll upgrade when they figure out wireless charging.

  • Not sure what the differences are.
I know that there are additional mics for noise cancellation but that just makes me more afraid since they have always been points of failure for previous ANC headsets I've used (QC35 II, and XM4) where they end up screeching. Decided to not buy any more of them and to stick with regular BT/ANC Off Headphones until that issue is resolved or if headphones can come with ANC off by default

    • +1

XM4s have more bass and stronger oomph whereas the XM5s have better vocals and acoustics. The different sound signatures are really what sets them apart. Which is why the XM4s are still being produced but at a lower retail price. Perhaps get Sony to RMA your headset. It shouldn't fail that easily considering the price and purpose; you should be covered by the ACL.

  • +5

Getting more and more expensive for little improvement

    • Yeah was gonna say, these just get more and more expensive every generation. How can the average consumer justify these price tags. The xm3 I picked up for $200 work really well but I couldn't see myself spending even $250 on something marginally better.

Edit: They do look nice though. I wish Sony would do more limited edition runs like how audio technica does with the m50x. When I go on the train everyone's basically wearing the same black headphones.

      • I'm more so upgrading from the WH-1000XM4 for hopefully better comfort. After 45min - 1 hour of continuously wearing the WH-1000XM4 I get a headache so I'm hoping this all new design will be better (I had the same problem with the WH-1000XM3 too as the design hasn't changed since the WH-1000XM2) .

        • You never tried the Bose? I’ve never liked the Sonys. We get them at work and I wear my headphones instead.

          • @onlinepred: I bought my wife a pair of the Bose 700 awhile back but I use them occasionally as well. They don't give me a sore head like the Sony WH-1000XM versions do but I have a weird and unexplained sense of brand loyalty to Sony and I prefer the look of them over the Bose. Audio quality and noise cancellation wise - they are honestly very comparable. The internal mics on the Bose for calls etc is significantly better than the WH-1000XM4 though.

            • @akyeeeahdude: I bought master and dynamic mw60, and beoplay h9i. I use these for everything now, paid around $450-$500 each through work. I don’t use my xm4 or qc35 anymore, even for flights. They feel so cheap and sound so average after using my other pairs.

              • @onlinepred: Do those dynamic mw60 and beoplay h9i headphones come with ANC? I basically use my XM3s to drown out my family, ANC is very important to me :)

                • +1

@trainingwheelz: Hahaha! Yes they do, they are not as good on dynamic sounds, but do all I need for bus/train/plane drones. It’s the trade off, good sound or good anc

      • $$ al about the money. They are pretty much doing what sasung and apple do each year with phones.

    • These are now apple prices. And everyone complains about the apple headphones every time. I would personally buy premium cans at this price instead of xm5

      • +3

$549 RRP vs $899 RRP? Not quite.

        • You pay rrp? What are you doing here? Premium cans regularly get to this price for the xm5. Like the apple headphones too.

          • +4

@onlinepred: Are you comparing the XM5's RRP to Apple's street prices? These have just been released and will soon be selling at half of the best Airpods Max deals.

            • @elektron: Exactly, so why would anyone pay this price now!

              • @onlinepred: I didn't upvote the deal, but I paid twice this amount for my current Bluetooth headphones, so I'm not one to judge.

        • +2

          Both are ripoffs.

      • +1

AFAIK the XMs have always launched around this price, just come down very quickly to the ~$300 range

  • I know now it doesn’t fold anymore like 1-4 versions but can anyone with a pair comment how sturdy the band is? My mark 1 finally snapped and can’t find any decent non dodgy source for a replacement part to fix so might just cop a v5

    • +2

Kind of depends on how many times you flex them in public

    • Xm5 is now plastic instead of a metal slider. Most headphones at this price are premium build components but Sony isn’t.

  • I've seen several complaints about not being able to adjust the anc on xm5. You can have it on or off and the level will adjust automatically dependingon your surroundings. Funny nobody mentioned this in any youtube reviews I saw.

  • How’s this stack to the seemingly cheaper Bose ones?

    • Night and day… night and day. Although I’m not quite sure which ones you’re supposed to wear at night, or wear during the day. The same ones, probably

    • These are more expensive and lower quality build and smaller speakers.

  • +1

Thanks OP, upgrading from my xm3.

I can claim both Amex and GST also

  • +1

Still got the 1000x and can't bring myself to replace them despite being on its last legs

    • +1

The xm3 on sale are a bargain, incremental improvements each gen.

      • I just won't enjoy anything new until they properly die.

I replaced the headband and it's as good as new. Battery is still great, sounds great too

      • What is the sale?

  • Has anyone be able to pair this with playstation 5? Or the previous model

    • I've got the WH1000XM4 and they won't pair to my PS5 (you need to buy a bluetooth adapter). The WH1000XM3 didn't pair to my PS4 either, without buying a special bluetooth adapter.

      • +1

The latency wouldn't be great for gaming anyway

      • +1

        Pair it to your TV?

        • You could but if you want in game voice chat, that won't solve it.

    • +2

Yea I can’t believe such expressive cans don’t even come with 3.5 mm adapter.

  • Soooo from what I gather I'll keep using my XM3s

  • +1

thanks op just bought with the amex and cashback shenanigans

i always save the sony offer never use it so good to actually use it for once

    • +2

Just wondering if your cash back has tracked?

      • +1

Mine didn't. Used the android CR app and integrated browser.

I'll give it until Monday/Tuesday before escalating, hopefully it's just a weekend delay thing.

        • Same with me! Happened twice now in less than a month. The previous one didn’t tracked even after 7 days. Guess I’ll have to cancel my order with Sony. Such a pain in the arse and ShopBack tracked almost instantly!

      • First time using Cash Rewards, I got an email saying it tracked OK.

Thanks for the post, I wouldn't have discovered the -10% off.

  • I'm hoping someone can help/advise.

I pre-ordered XM5 from Amazon thinking that Australian release is 1/7/22, after checking a few outlets.

Clicking through to Sony now, it is saying that is ready to deliver.

Is this intended? That it's available to Sony only 2 weeks before the other shops can sell them?

Are there any downsides buying XM5 from Sony store as opposed to other stores?

Also, if Cash Rewards work, it's another -10%, whereas ordering from JB, Amazon, Harvey etc, is full price.

    • +2

I'd stick with Amazon… you'd get much easier returns.

    • +1

They are also available currently from The Good Guys on their website. https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sony-premium-noise-cancelling…

      • +1

        Thanks for the post!

The Good Guys is -12% @ CR and another $80 store credit.

        • +2

But how are you doing C&C since there's not many stores that have them? The credit says it needs to be C&C?

          • +1

@neo: You are right. I didn't go through with checking since I've already bought from Sony.

You've actually made me feel heaps better.

            • +1

@p2015: I got excited too when I saw the 12% Good Guys Cashback deal combined with the Click & Collect bonus but again, no stores have stock yet, only direct from The Good Guys warehouse/supplier.

  • +1

I'm going to wait for the next revision of this new model.
I had the first gen XM1s and the headband part kept cracking, So I'm a little hesitant going through that again on a new model.

Feature wise it looks like a good upgrade to my XM2s. Which are still going ok, though battery only lasts maybe 12-15 hours now.

  • Ordered one, xm4 doesn't fit my head very well, hopefully this is better.

    • +1

Good idea, since one can’t order a new head

  • -3

Let me know when this gets to $350

  • +2

Can these be tax-deducted in any way, as a WFH expense?

    • +2

Yes - that's why I upgrade every couple years, when Sony releases a new model (had the WH1000XM3, then WH1000XM4 and soon to have WH1000XM5 ;))

      • Are there that bad you need to upgrade that often?

    • Yes but since they're above $300 they need to be depreciated, not deducted whole immediately. And apportioned for any non work use.
