Great thanks I've used Getflix a few times, but using a different one atm. I had problems with another Android box whereas apple tv was easy, set and forget for the family with the UK apps. May try your method instead, thanks again

        • +1

Cheers but Smart DNS Proxy is virtually the same as Getflix, if that’s an issue. I pay US$25 a year. Also Channel 4 refuses to bring out an Android TV app, unlike the other UK channels. You can side load the phone app on the Shield but need a mouse to navigate the menus. I don’t bother anymore with All4. Plenty of other fish in the streaming sea.

  • I purchased for $310 from Amazon on the 11th June, anything I can do or just wear the higher price?

    • +1

You could ask their live chat for a credit and see what they say. If unsuccesful, you could order another one at the new lower price, then return this new one via your old order at the higher price. Depending on how long delivery takes, you might need to initiate the return soon-ish before the return window closes on your current order. So long as it's the same model via the same seller, it should work?

    • +3

Look above at sp3ctr41 's comment - initiate the return ASAP and as suggested, if they give grief, tell them if you return it you'll purchase it locally from HN.

    • +2

      Thanks heaps

I tell you what though, they were fighting it hard, I kept mentioning what a hassle for both parties it would be to send my item back only to rebuy at a lower price

This is what I ended up with

"As an exception, I will issue discount on the item.

      Discount Amount AU$ 62
Funds will be credited to your original form(s) of payment and may take 2-10 business days to process."

Been debating this one and the apple TV.

Currently use Xiaomi box, nothing complain. it just slow.

    • -3

      Cool

    • Being slow is a complaint though, and to me it's worth an upgrade to either the shield or apple tv.

    • The Apple TV 4K is much slicker with better performance in my experience of owning both. If all you're doing is using it for streaming media the apple tv is better IMO. If you have apple devices it gets even better with airplay and homekit support.

      • problem is appletv not allowed sideload apps like kodi, so walled garden
and need to pay annual subscription for infuse app etc just to get local media playback

        • These streaming boxes aren't made for local media playback so that's a non-issue. The whole point is they're just a way to access streaming content.

You can also sideload Kodi on Apple TVs: https://www.technadu.com/install-kodi-on-apple-tv/8711/

          • @MrFunSocks:

These streaming boxes aren't made for local media playback so that's a non-issue. The whole point is they're just a way to access streaming content.

Not really, if you want to just want to stream content you can just buy cheap chromecast with google tv or firestick tv etc vs these $200 to $300 devices..

you can't make generalized comment like that..
            since people have different needs..

there are actually people who buy these boxes for local media playback only
and will never stream content from those paid providers..
these boxes are the modern day HTPC for many people…

You can sideload apps on android TV etc, so it is not just meant for streaming content but for whatever people want to install or need..

Local content is still the best/cheapest for a majority of people since there is so much streaming providers out there..
which only have access to their specific library (e.g. netflix and disney+) which means you are paying alot per year just to signup to get access to netflix as well marvel/disney shows etc (if you want to watch both)

With cost of living increasing nowadays
many more people are going to cancel their streaming subscriptions even more now

You can also sideload Kodi on Apple TVs: https://www.technadu.com/install-kodi-on-apple-tv/8711/

            if this works than great
but it is more complex for a lot of people vs sideloading APK via a filebrowser on android

It also requires having access to MacOS for Xcode to prepare the install file which not many people have.
and who know how longs these method will work since Apple is known to keep trying to stop sideloading of apps etc..

  • My 2017 Shkrld still going strong I just hate the remote.

To buy or not to buy LOL

    • I bought the new remote when it was on sale and it's been great. With Logitech Harmony and Google Home, that's the only remote I need for all media and live TV consumption.

    • You can also use Google Home or Google TV app on your mobile as a remote now. Also easier to type, but still a bit buggy due to new release.

    • My 2017 Shkrld

      What is a "Shkrld"?

If you mean "Shield" then yes, the remote is awful. Up there with worst remotes of any device I can think of. Navigation buttons way too easy to press wrong button.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Picked up a Series S as a Fortnite / Fall Guys box for the kids.

  • I have Plex and an older Chromecast v3 (no Google TV) - why do I need this Shield Pro? What advantages are there to be had?

    • +2

If you have no issues with your current set up then there's no real reasons to upgrade. But that is not the ozbargain way. At ozbargain we buy stuff just because.

  • Can I simply copy to a usb all the streaming apps I have on my current shield and transfer them to the new shield?

    • +1

      Sounds harder, with no benefit.

  • +1

Would Nvidia Shield a good upgrade for Vodafone TV ? What would be the advantage ? Mainly use for Netflix and Kodi

    • +2

Faster, more stable. Also will pass through truhd/dtsx.

I updated my Vodafone with the google tv interface, sometimes it crashes. I only use mine for YouTube and Netflix so can't comment on local media but the shield will handle a wider range of file formats and perform noticebly faster. Whether that's worth it is up to you, if you're happy with the Vodafone and find everything works well then the next step up would be the google tv or the tube version of the shield. The pro model would just be a 2 steps up, more ram so less chances of large files not playing.

  • Specs can be found here for the current models*:

    Shield TV
    Shield TV Pro

    *Android OS may need updating

Links should be included in the description since the retailer sites are piss poor at this!

    • +1

The mass buy without these links. Doesn’t seem to matter

      • Specs do resolve a lot of these stupid questions people have that fill the comments and I'll probably be negged for saying this :)

  • Looking for some advice, I have the NVIDIA shield non-pro tube version and love it, play all tv through kodi including Foxtel Go. I have 100mbs ethernet connection. If I leave Netflix app open and then run kodi it seems to run out of ram and struggle. Also sound quality can sometimes be atrocious. Would upgrade to the pro be worthwhile? Is there an easy way to backup and transfer all settings from my current one to a new one?

  • +1

I heard the shield is particularly good a few times, but are they ever making a new one?

What about AV1 for future proofing?

    • “If it ain’t broke…”

  • Does anyone use this for streaming PC games ie Xbox game pass, does it have noticeable lag

    • +1

I've used it with Geforce Now, Gamestream and Steam Link with no noticable lag after about 20 seconds when it starts initially. Don't have game pass yet but https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxGamePass/comments/quynx4/gamepa…

      • Thanks for that, bought one to give it a go, a few options there, worst case will have a proper media server and ditch using universal media server

  • There is a new sheriff in town, the Chinese Mekotronics R58X but it's way overpriced currently. It outperforms Shield TV in every metric. It won't enjoy OTA updates like the Shield TV does though. Could be a consideration for emulation use though.

    • Basic Android not Android TV, so you have all those headaches, comes rooted, so more headaches for apps that won't load/play on rooted devices, no Dolby Vision, zero info about audio capabilities.
As you say, updates will probably be pretty bad too.

      • All good points, I forgot it comes rooted so you're right about the headaches. With all that in mind the current asking price for it is ridiculous.

    • I find both shields are exactly as should be. Run rings around the cheapies. Genuinely curious what this one does better?

      • Much more powerful CPU and GPU (over 2X better) and I think 8 and 16GB memory options. But that's about where the advantages end, with lots of disadvantages. If the price were $200 I'd overlook those problems but they currently want $600 for it.

  • Hey guys, perhaps I'm being a bit lazy BUT you folks are very knowledgeable sooo…why would I consider this over the chromecast that's built in to my Sony TV? I also have a separate network PC running Plex and a Steam Link for streaming games. (All ethernet)

I suspect this isn't something I need. But that's not the OzBargain mantra right? Need-shmeed! ;)

    • You're in a grey area right now, tread carefully or your OzBargain card could be revoked.
Buy first, realise you don't need it later.

To answer your question, Shield TV is faster and more powerful in every aspect. But if your chromecast is getting the job done you probably don't need it.

    • You could run a Nvidia Shield Pro as a Plex server and steam link combined. It's what I do and it works great plus don't have to have the PC on all the time then too so more economical (I use a NAS to serve media to the Shield for the Plex server - works great)

  • Good price but is it any better than the Apple TV 4k? I'm pretty happy with that

    • +2

      I'm pretty happy with that

Then no need to do anything,

    • +1

Both have excellent hardware, but Shield software is Android, i.e much more customisable for power users and able to run many more apps including Kodi and torrent streamers. For standard Netflix, Stan, Disney+ etc commercial streaming, Apple TV is great.

    • If you had already found the one which makes you happy, stop searching and enjoy :)

  • Might be a stupid question but we speed up our viewing speed to 1.25 to get through slow series or movies. Few of the players support that (except Netflix). So we end up using a Chrome plugin called Video Speed Controller.

Does either of these include chrome in that case?

  • Awesome, something to use my rewards points on!

I'm upgrading to this from a 2015 shield just for the ability to transcode DD+ to normal DD 5.1 to avoid the stupid distortion bug in my old AVR.

    (profanity)' Dolby.

  • Bought a non-pro to add to my collection - 2x 2017 Pros and now this one.

Did I need it? Not really, but it will be an improvement on what I currently use in that room.

  • So glad I bought this.

It’s just a much nicer interface than WebOS.

Had issues getting Dolby Vision working, but it was due to my AV receiver not being on enhanced mode. All sorted and working great now.

Any benefits to running one of these over a Mi Box with Kodi for playing back 30-40GB 1080p Bluray rips?

    • The Shield has way more power than a Mi Box, especially for Kodi which struggles on a Mi Box S, but why are you streaming 30-40gb Blu ray rips? Isn't that overkill for 1080p?

      • One example: LOTR.

        They didn’t mention streaming.

        • I assumed antik is streaming from a NAS or hard disk and using Kodi as the media manager, but I'd expect 4K for rips that size.

          • @sepa: Tried editing previous to say:
I’m guessing it’s all remux/raw. Return Of The King (non-extended) 1080p straight from bluray is 37GB.

And in answer to their question, mibox is great until it isn’t. I kept throwing more 4K x265 at mine… until it didn’t like them any more. Pretty sure decompression is the issue, not bitrate.

Getting 5 years out of a $70 device is awesome for me. I pass them onto friends, and replace with shields.

            • @Ulysses31: So would you still recommend starting with a Mi Box for only streaming live TV playlists? I doubt my use case will develop beyond that, so not sure if the Mi Box will handle that just fine?

              • +2

@maataa0b: Forget the Mi Box. They were good back in the day but the Chromecast with Google TV is a far better option and the best value for basic streaming at only $69 here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/707943

                • @sepa: ^ agreed.
Firestick 4K on special seems to be a good middle ground.

                • +1

@sepa: sweet, thanks for your reply mate!

                • @sepa: problem with Chromecast with Google TV is 8GB is not enough anymore, many people finding storage is running out (even for updates)
Googles need to bring out more bigger storage model

also they need to support AV1 codec

          • @sepa: Just download onto an SSD HDD then plug it into the MiBox. The 1080p rips I download are generally around 30GB for an average film. Sure there are 8-12GB versions, but with a gigabit connection it only takes minutes, so I just choose the largest 1080p rip, and it’s usually not much smaller than the largest 4K rip.

MiBox/Kodi handles all of these files really well, especially auto-switching to 24hz film mode. I don’t see where a Shield would offer any upgrades?

  • RK3588 coming out soon I wonder if they’re planning on a new device using this chipset hence the price decrease.

  • +1

Didn't want it, didn't need it, still ended up getting it.
It arrived yesterday. The Pro version.
Already had the NVIDIA Shield TV, as well as several others including Amazon's 4k max etc.
    Thank you ozbargain.

  • Can I play DolbyVision MKVs properly with this?

    • yes, I think SDR only though. I have trouble playing HDR with the larger colour gamut. Sometimes outright nVS Pro doesn't want to play via Plex. I can play 4K SDR DV no issues. Although this was tested only via NFS share from a NAS on wifi. Results may vary if you have a direct source file playing. I haven't tested a local 4K HDR mkv.

  • Opted for the non pro (dont need plex or gaming) and performance is great. very snappy especially for kodi with kayo addon etc

  • Received this today and I'm returning it. Can't cast to it from apps like Google Photos, YouTube, Spotify etc. Going back to Chromecast w/ Google TV. It came with Android TV (9) and forced to upgrade. No HDMI cable in the box.

    • why you can't cast from those apps including youtube?

did you set it up correctly?

from what I known about this device, it suppose to support casting.

interesting this solution might help, can you test it just so we know if casting works or not

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WopZHnufzyQ

      • Already boxed up sorry. It shows up in cast menu but nothing happens or returns an error.

        • hmm.. from that youtube link I posted,
the person just update the chromecast built-in app in nvidia shield and casting works..
          https://youtu.be/WopZHnufzyQ?t=52

          you not sent it away?
will you get charged for opening this and returning it?
what are you going to get instead?

most of the other media players (except apple TV) are under powered or low storage compared to this..

  • +1

I've been running a vodafone TV for last few yrs (from a prev OzB deal of course!) - and it's been great for my basic needs.. netflix, youtube, some plex (still getting my collection setup)
Figured for $1-fitty the non-pro (only have HD TV) would be a great next step and motivation to complete the Plex library setup…. and same day Amazon delivery.
    Thanks OP!

    • arrived!

      • can you testing it casting still works via the youtube app on your phone or tablet etc?
