Menu prices at fast food group KFC will be increased for a third time in 2022 as raw material costs keep rising, and the lettuce shortage which has caused KFC to use a cabbage blend in some burgers will be fixed within five to seven weeks.….

Saw it on the ABC finance report yesterday and wondered how long it would take for it to appear on here.

Fast food used to be cheap and convenient… now it's just convenient.

I can vouch for Woolies fried chicken if you need a chicken hit.

    • +6

      Woolies fried chicken

the coles one does alright too

    • +4

They also have them at Ampol 'Metro'-branded servos now.

    • +2

i think they sell these at the metro stores in sydney (already heated in takeaway boxes). theyre pretty tasty

    • Does anyone know how many wings you get approximately in a 1kg pack?

      • +3

        I think around 12 or 14.

Much better value than KFC of course but lacking the secret herbs.

        • +2

Ok, cool, thanks for that. I just wanted to know because I have a Wild Wings near me that I visit regularly to get their fried chicken, they have $10 for 10 wings offer ongoing. Tough choice now.

          • +1

@geek001: Depends how big their wings are. These frozen ones are bigger than KFC wicked wings.
Worth just keeping a bag in the freezer as a backup.

Take around 45 mins in the oven or 20~ in an air fryer.

            • +1

@SnowDragon: We had the cheap as chips deal on Sunday and the Breast piece was tiny as. The rest of the pieces were okay.

            • +1

@SnowDragon: Yea, might keep a bag in the freezer, even though the Wild Wings is like 2 mins drive away from me, sometimes I am just so lazy in winter. Lol. Plus, I usually air fry the fried chicken again for about 10 minutes when I get home.

        • There are a few southern style seasoning packs, from Costco and Asian grocers, however, not everyone has access to a Henny Penny Pressure Cooker.

    • I dunno, for me I tried those woolies ones several times and found the fried batter all soggy and the chicken real fatty. Almost like a below-average chinese sweet & sour dish if that makes sense? Maybe it's my local.

      • +2

How did you cook it? I tried one of those just yesterday at a friends place and the coating was far crispier than anything I’ve ever had at KFC, although I haven’t eaten KFC in at least 6 years.

        • +4

My fault for not clicking the link - I presumed it was those boxes up front in the warmer cabinet that have 4-6 fried wings inside ready to eat - usually a plain and a sweet red-coloured one.
I should give the frozen ones a go since you guys are recommending

          • +3

@Sonnyjimbo: I prefer the coles “fresh” version that are in the meat department. The frozen Woolworths ones were a bit too fatty for my liking, although my sample size is from one serve.

            • +1

@mapax: For those that live in Newcastle, the Steggles Outlet shop sometimes sells 'Next generation' frozen wings in bulk (blue bag), which are delicious. Similar to Henny Penny

              • @BewareOfThe Dog: theres a steggles outlet shop in newcastle? Whereabouts is it?

    • +6

I wouldn't even call it that anymore, often waiting far too long for food.

    • Thought you were linking the hot takeaway chicken they have in some stores. I wasn't fond of that.

  • +11

cabbage blend in some burgers will be fixed within five to seven weeks.….

i am actually a big fan of the cabbage blend - low key hope it stays on for more than 7 weeks haha

    • +1

      Taste or health reasons?

    • +1

Can't believe it. Thought I was the only one that liked the texture.

  • +35

Lettuce have a moment of silence.

    • +36

      Why?

      Cos

      • +15

        Now thats a Zinger!

        • +6

          Bad jokes …. Romaine calm.

Did you hear about the race between the lettuce and the tomato?
The lettuce was a 'head' and the tomato was trying to ketchup.

    • +3

Just like when the Titanic hit an Iceberg.

      • I’ll pay that, it was a long time ago now.

  • +16

Menu prices at fast food group KFC will be increased for a third time in 2022 as raw material costs keep rising,

    Good.

Making junk food more expensive is a net benefit for the public health system.

    • +14

Overeating and not exercising is the problem.

      • +5

That's part of the problem. Eating crap all the time is a bigger part.

        • +8

I am surprised someone would neg you. You are absolutely correct. The quality of our food plays a HUGE role. Seed oils instead of proper fat and highly processed foods are clogging our arteries. As someone who's eating MORE than in the past, not excessively exercising (just walking) and still having lost 8 kgs in the past two months I can test - it's just a change of what I eat.

          • @duchy: Out of curiosity are you on keto diet?

      • +2

If overeating is the problem then cheap, hyper-palatable, calorie dense junk food is the problem. Try overeating broccoli

        • Even broccoli has an LD50 level, although it is quite an amount.

      • +1

Those are only 2/3rds of the problem. According to science, the remaining 3rd is low quality food as stated above. Anybody arguing otherwise is just trying to justify their poor dietary choices.

    • +3

So now we all can be fat and broke instead of just being fat?

      • +1

Eat vegetables, meat and home-cooked meals.

        • +1

Have you not seen the price of vegetables?

          • +1

            @worldpc: grow them

          • @worldpc: Potatoes and bananas are cheap.

            • +1

@rektrading: Complex carbohydrates + simple carbohydrates. Yeah, baby!

          • +1

@worldpc: I have. I can still make a healthy plate of food for $5, up from $3.50 pre-inflation. Beats a fast food meal for $12.

        • +1

Correct. Hopefully the incoming recession will force some people back to low cost, healthier home cooking.

  • +22

At the same time they announce the 3rd price increase since January they also announce a record NPAT with an increase this year of 25%
Such corporate greed is an example of why inflation is rocketing upwards

    • +26

This reminds me of the large corporates I work for. Each year during our performance reviews, we all get told our salary increases and bonuses are small because we haven't met targets and our profits have taken a hit, etc. On the other hand, they're announcing to the public and everyone else that we've had a record year with record profits etc.

      A-holes, all of them!

      • +5

And the Execs, get new cars, big bonuses etc

        • +2

          Can confirm, I'm the etc.

      • +3

I work at one of those large corporates too! Can't wait to see my pay rise start with a 1.

        • +2

Mine always starts with a 1…. (it's exactly that if I'm lucky, otherwise it's just 0!) lol

    • +5

yep KFC along with all the other fast food and takeaways (local and Uber eats etc) is off the menu now

prices keep increasing or portions getting smaller

    • -1

      Welcome to Capitalism.

    • +2

Perhaps because ppl keep buying despite the price increases?

      • It's a lettuce for $12 or a 2 piece feed for a bit less than that. I know what I'm getting! haha

        • Who is your lettuce guy

  • Here's another article

See how many articles you can find by 3pm today.

      • +5

        Here's one:-
Collins Foods — which owns KFC, Taco Bell and Sizzler in Australia, Asia and Europe — jumped 11.6 per cent after impressing the market with its full-year earnings report.
        LOL

  • Surely they will reduce prices once supply costs come down!

    • +14

there is only one way it's going , and it aint down…

    • -1

Whereupon we will be bombarded with whingeing farmers about "how the big chains are exploiting us" and "the country is gonna starve unless prices rise".

  • +1

Fish and chips is the cheapest fast food you can get now. Best value

    • +9

      Surely pizza.

      • for sure pizza if we're talking QTY over quality - some decent deals to be had with dominos coupons now and then

      • I swear pizza prices have been increasing the most. $10 to $15 in like 3-4 years in most places

    • +3

Don't know where you're getting your fish and chips, I find fish and chips the most expensive fast food in my area. I pay nearly $40 for a couple of pieces of decent fish and chips for two. Whereas I can get 8 pizzas for the same price at Dominoes.

      • Yes, generally not cheap, and lots of Allergen/cross-contamination (though some places have dedicated fryers for Gluten-Free and/or no seafood)

      • What suburb is that?

I mean it's still seafood… And seafood is expensive in general.

        • Only if its fresh and the variety it claims to be. Frozen basa is the cheapest protein anywhere.

      • That can't be right!? WA?
We pay <$30 for 3 of us and did at the last place to (moved metro to regional Vic)

        • That's in the Capalaba Qld. $16 each for two pieces of Coral Trout and $6 for minimum serve of chips.

          • @Leanne59: Absolutely insane!

          • -1

@Leanne59: That's because you went to the fancy The Capalaba. Just go to regular Capalaba next time.

            • @Daabido: Yeah right. Went to type the Redlands but changed to Capalaba and obviously didn't delete "the" and it can't be edited. Even in regular Capalaba the prices are the same as the Capalaba.

    • +1

$10-12 for one battered basa (questionable source) and chips? Pass.

  • -1

Well they need to keep their business profitable. I'm sure they weren't immune to having their rent, labour, and cost of goods go up.

They have fantastic deals on the app if anyone wants their food cheaper. Even better if you have access to the staff discount.

    • +8

I bought a staff discount card on ebay @15 years ago.

      • +1

is it still working for you and is it possible to buy now ?

    • They should cut the wages of the team who keep coming up with "new" items, which are just the items they sell now, rearranged (like Mexican food).

  • +6

Easy to fix… don’t eat there and save 100%

    • So "easy" indeed!

      • +1

Are you implying it is not easy to avoid KFC?

    • -1

I know right? This is the definition of a first world problem.

  • +1

I doubt this increase will stop me from buying KFC anytime soon, I just enjoy the hot food and fast service too much where I live!

Btw, are those drone deliveries still only in the trial area up in Queensland? Would love to give that a go :D

    • +1

There s a snippet in the Perth now article above about drones?

      • Yeh no mention of Melbourne though

        • The article relates to the Collins group. Not sure if this is still the case, but there are 2 groups in Australia such as the Collins group, which looks after mainly Qld, some Northern NSW, NT & WA?

So maybe some time before we see it in Sydney, Melbourne Etc

    • +1

Buy a net gun, get free kfc and a free drone
