              • @Droz: According to this article, Vidaa is Chromecast compatible so it must be running Android TV under the hood.

                • @thangcuoi: Vidaa isn't Android TV. But you can screen cast to it only.

  • doesn't support kodi really well

    • +2

Not sure what issue you are having. I was able to sideload Kodi on the 4K Max. It felt smoother than my Vodafone TV which also has 2GB RAM but an older chipset.

      • I'm unable to sideload kayo on 4k max. Are you able to share the details, if its not too much of an ask. Thanks!

        • +1

          Try this.

You might want to try the Kodi add-on.

          • @thangcuoi: Thanks, I'll give it a try! I have the Kodi add-on but looking for an easy way to have the app available on the home screen. 😀

        • Perhaps saying what isn’t actually working might help others help you more than just saying you’re “unable to”.

What are you doing? What errors do you get? What APK are you using?

          • @PainToad: I tried to install Kayo via Aptoide but after install it wants to upgrade and it keeps defaulting to Amazon App store instead of Aptoide. So it doesn't let me proceed. Binge worked fine with Aptoide.

            • +2

@anilpnair: I would only ever download APKs from APK Mirror or APK Pure as they only allow clean verified apps. APK Pure has a version from last month.

              https://m.apkpure.com/kayo-sports-for-android-tv/au.com.kayo…

            • +2

@anilpnair: It sounds like you were installing an old version. This happened to my Kayo on Fire TV when a new version was released. APKmirror is where I got mine from too. Also you may need to mod the apk to make the icon show for some apps like Kayo.

      • Some mkv format cant be played smoothly. My Nvidia doesn't have any similar issue.
It maybe to do with 64 or 32
        format? or compatibility

    • No issues here, even on a Firestick Lite.

    • +1

Kodi works beautifully on my 4K Max. It's a bit choppy on regular Fire TV and Lite sticks though.

      • can you play 4k 10bit hevc hdr videos on kodi on your 4k Max?

how well would it stream these file from SMB local share to the 4k Max?
or would it need to be connected by ethernet?

  • Noob question. Could I plug this into a TV monitor and have the Firestick connect to a BT speaker for audio (the monitor doesnt have AUX)?

    • +3

Managed to connect to some Bluetooth ear plugs. Worked fine so shouldn't be an issue. Although PITA to setup.

    • +1

Yes you can. I also hook it up to my Rokid Air glasses.

  • +2

These are great to bring to hotel rooms if they don't have Chromecast etc. If you forget it there no worries.

    • You still need internet though, right? I'm thinking of ways to stream content to a cruise ship's TV, and I discovered that these devices can access the 'input' selection which is usually absent from those TV remotes.

      • Yeah you still need internet. Depending on the brand of TV (Samsung/LG) are the two most common ones, you just go into the admin menu and disable hotel mode. For example I think it's mute + 119 + enter for samsung. This also disables the input restrictions and volume control functions etc.

Cruise ships are hard because obv internet, unless you have an internet package. These sticks still let you use the web browser to authenticate to hotel/web page / internet paywalls.

      • +2

You can also just plug in your USB stick loaded with media into the FireStick (use an OTG adapter for about AU$8 to allow dual power plus one spare USB slot for the stick (or anything else)).

  • I bought one barely a week ago and have put it on an older 1080p TV. It seems to have an IR blaster, which is great because the TV doesn't have HDMI-CEC, so the power and volume buttons work fine. I have mine powered by the USB from the TV. Boot time is 30 seconds.

  • Does anyone know whether this will allow Dolby Atmos in Disney+ and Netflix AND can properly handle refresh rates to avoid stuttering?

I currently watch Netflix and Disney through my Samsung Q70's apps and both wont allow Atmos. I then hooked up my Xbox Series X to my soundbar and I got Atmos, however it forced 60p so it stuttered. I also have an Odroid media box with Kodi on it but can't work out how or if i can get Disney+ on it.

I was ready to ditch my Odroid media player and buy a Nvidia Shield so it can handle everything, but this seems like a good deal if it works how I want it to.

    • +1

remember how things just worked when you watched movies on DVD…

  • +3

Note 4k can't display at lower than 60hz will revert to 1080p

So if you have a cheap 4k tv and want 4k check your refresh rates before buying.

    • Really? So if I try to stream a 4k movie it will force 60hz and drop frames?

      • I don't think hz has anything to do with frame rate does it? Isn't it just the refresh rate of the tv?

    • Isn't there an option to automatically adjust and match frame rate to the content you're watching?

      • Does it work though?

  • If my TV has a built-in Chromecast, is it worth getting this? The Chromecast often bugs out, and I find I have to reset it at least once a week.

    • Can't go wrong at this price.

    • This can cast using mirror mode or via third-party app such as Allcast. It's not compatible with Chromecast.

Most official streaming services has a compatible app that will run on this. You can sideload the app if it's not available officially in the Fire TV appstore.

  • Anyone in Canberra wanna go halves?

    • Same question for Sydney. :). Feel free to PM.

      • Hey virhlpool. I'm keen on going halves. In Beverly Hills Sydney

        • Jumping on this thread as well for Sydney. Shoot me a PM if you’re interested!

  • Fire TV Stick or Google TV?

    • It depends on how much you want to spend and your usage case. This deal work out to be cheaper than any Google TV deals I have seen.

      • Fair enough. As long as I have access to all those apps which can be accessed by Google TV, I am ok with Fire TV Stick. Is it the case?

        • +1

Yes, the only app I could not get working are those depending on Android TV Accessibility Service (eg: Button Mapper). All streaming apps that work on Google TV should work on Fire TV.

    • I have the fire stick 4K. Miss being able to Chromecast from phone.

      • Um still can dude….

        • With screen mirroring do you have to leave the playing device on? Or can you just put it away like with Chromecast?

          • @Hiphopopotamus: with screen mirroring, you have to leave the playing device on.

if you use a 3rd party app, you dont have to.

            • +1

@yummycoot: Got it, my parents use that function quite a bit, I'll have a look into it.

Thinking about it though that might be too much for them, having to cast through another app, they barely know how to use YouTube hehe.

        • +2

Bit of stuffing around to get it working. Chromecast works straight up. Pops up in casting options

      • +1

Try Allcast. Much better than the Fire TV's built-in screen mirroring mode.

        • can you cast youtube from youtube phone app to youtube app on the fireTV?

  • Do you have to use the remote with these or can you use the TV remote via CEC?

    • According to Google - yes;
      https://forums.tomsguide.com/faq/how-to-enable-hdmi-cec-on-y…

      Best I can find from Amazon though is this, which is more about enabling it on your TV - not the Fire TV Stick;
      https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=…

Does lend some support to it having HDMI-CEC though.

      • OK thanks. Seems like you can use it. Might give it a crack when it goes on sale.

    • +1

Can confirm that you can use the TV remotes with CEC. Works fine. There also a decent FireTV app you can download on you phone and use that instead of the bundled remote

      • Thanks for confirming. Good to hear.

      • I found the Android version of the Fire TV app not as good as Google's version for Android TV. You can't paste into the text box.

On the other hand, I found Alexa works extremely well for dictating search terms into almost every text box. Trying to do a similar search using Google Assistant on Android TV and it just takes me to Google Play and other results.

  • Do amazon firesticks have all the live tv channels like the Roku's?

  • Has anyone managed to use fire stick with HDMI CEC on one of those Adli Bauhn TVs? I can't seem to make it pair. did you just select Bauhn TV in the setup (for pairing) or a different brand / model? Thanks

    • Won't even work for my Samsung,😂

  • Can someone who owns one confirm that VLC and Kodi work, and that so do SMB v1 Windows shares as a source? I already have a media library in a format I like and I don't want to use Plex.

    • Kodi 100% works. I have not tried with VLC though.

      • Ta.

  • Can these run Kayo? Asking for my mother..

  • +5

Obligatory install SmartTubeNext for ad-free Youtube. It even has SponsorBlock which can skip in-video sponsor segments.

  • No Binge and Kayo app on the Amazon App Store, so you need to know how to find a working APK and sideload it.

    • +1

A: Yes you can install Kayo on a Firestock or box. Just side load ot from a 3rd party app store like Aptoide. Use Downloader from the Amazon store to browse the net for Aptoide. Install Aptoide, the search in it for Kayo.

      • Can you plz explain what you mean by ‘side load’ in the dumbest way possible? Am a noob

        • When referring to Android apps, "sideloading" typically means installing an application package in APK format onto an Android device. Such packages are usually downloaded from websites other than the official app store Google Play.

  • Have not tried this yet but I'm looking forward to getting the Fire Stick 4K Max connected to ARC port so I can try a stereo pair of Echo Studio to use as a TV speaker that supports atmos and probably heaps better than soundbar.

Can anyone confirm that the Ethernet Adapter https://www.amazon.com.au/Amazon-Ethernet-Adapter-for-Amazon… works for Fire Stick 4k Max?

    • +1

I believe the Ethernet adapter will work on all models

    • +1

I've been using this ethernet adapter with my Fire Stick 4K Max works perfectly

Cable Matters Micro USB to Ethernet Adapter Up to 480Mbps for Streaming Sticks Including Chromecast, Google Home Mini and More - Not Compatible with Roku Device https://amzn.asia/d/dAaaPiZ

  • Hey asking on this thread…
If I add hub and a usb drive… Did it have to be formatted to fat 32?ie 4gb limit size per file?

    • +1

Yes, there will be a 4gb limit for the files.

  • Wish these did lossless passthrough

    • Care to explain ELI5?

      • Firestick 4K max cannot pass through lossless audio codecs e.g. TrueHD including Atmos on Bluray rips

  • Very very interested to see any deals on Oculus 2

  • Just a note Kayo app isnt supported by Firestick

    • It can be side loaded

  • I have Google tv, telstra tv plus and a smart tv. Is it worth getting on of these?

    • if you want to move to amazon echosystem slowly

  • If I have smart TV, do I need this?

    • is it android tv and not lagging?

      • LG oled A1, not as fast as C1 for sure.

        • if you are satisfied with the UX and the apps, then dont buy any media player. A1 is a 2021 TV, so its very recent

          • +1

@yummycoot: I do feel it slower than my ps4 when navigating between the streaming content though. On A1 it just feels not smooth and occassionally there is like 0.5s freeze. It does have a lower processor vs C1.

            • @rave75: i see, yeah if you want to have a smoother experience, then definitely a media player such as this or chromecast with google tv or apple tv is worth trying.

chromecast with google tv or shield or amazon for android

apple tv if your ecosystem is apple

    • if you don't already have it, you don't need it. but this isn't the OzB way…

    • +1

You probably don't need it but it will most likely improve your experience, especially if you already have Prime.

  • I use my current chromecast to cast Foxtel Go. I use my TVs OS for stuff like Netflix and Stan. Would this be worth the upgrade for someone like me? Cheers

  • do i have to be Prime member to access this deal?

    • yes that's what Prime day's target audience is.

    • You can sign up for a one month free trial if you had not had one in the past 12 months. The free trial can be extended if you cancel and near the end of the trial period and click on the right options.

      • Is that extension trick still working? People reported it was no longer working on another thread.
