Great deal! It's a shame there's currently no way to stream The Daily Wire on the Firestick though (probably a selling point for a lot of people here).

Pretty sure a very large portion of the arguments from the right when they are talking specifically about 'MSM'

You wouldn't see right wingers downvoting someone merely making a comment

That is exactly what the whole yelling about 'fake news' was, "your opinion is invalid because it came from (insert word to denounce news publication rather than the information provided)"

not sure which bubble you live in(I could guess), but it happens on both sides.

        • -7

I think there might have been a bit of what you are saying, people on the right claiming "fake news" just because it came from a source they didn't like, you are never going to stop that, but for the most part it was used to bring attention to the MSM huge left wing bias.

Some examples in the US are the Trump/Russia collusion hoax that the media banged on about for years on end (basically his whole presidency) that's now been proven false. The Hunter Biden laptop story that was buried as "fake news" by MSM until after the election… then it came out as 100% true. The list goes on but they are two prominent ones that come to mind and where the whole "fake news" calls originated from in the US.

          • -8

@Binchicken22: I hear you mate, but most Australians are pretty left wing and love their big government. I think it's partly because the USA fought off the tyrannical British government and then the Brits granted the rest of the colonies their independence. To us, government is benevolent and loves us. When they take away our fire arms or lock us in our homes, it's because they know what's best for us. Trying to explain anything else to your average Aussie is a waste of time.

Switching between the ABC, Sky News, CNN/MSNBC and Daily Wire/Fox News is an exhausting experience, but I find I learn a lot and also find truth in the middle. I recommend this method to everyone but almost nobody can stand to listen to anything but their side. They think they're being lied to, and that's hard to put up with.

            • +2

@locknuts: We definitely have our issues but we can see how America is going as an "experiment" that we don't need in our lives. They say they don't like big government, but yet they want the government involved in terms of abortion… it's honestly an extremely regulated country from when I visit. Getting a rental vehicle is a pain, getting health insurance is a pain (it's basically tied to your employer, which is designed to keep you working there). It seems very selective, I prefer if you give a reason for your position on a particular matter, that you're logically consistent. They want "small" government, yet they have THE HIGHEST incarceration rate in the world, you can't have a drink legally until you're 21 (you can fight wars though), no assisted suicide for those who are in extreme pain, where's the consistency?

I think the issue with "right wing media" is that they're just completely mental if we're talking about right wing media from America. I don't think most right wing people here want their healthcare taken away, their medicine to increase substantially, for us to finance countless more wars and have a huge defence department, etc which is what they already have in USA, let alone what their right wing is advocating for to go further right. I personally am a centrist, I think the extremes on both side are pretty crazy personally. What saddens me the most is that we import the stupid culture from America, where it's clearly failing.

I honestly don't care if you're from the left or the right, just that when you're bringing in ideas, you're willing to discuss them, have them critiqued and explain why you want it… we're a long way from there, but because we're bringing in America's culture, we're moving away from it. Years ago, I'd have been able to blame Rupert Murdoch for most of it, but now the left wing is driving more people towards right wing media which is no good for anybody.

              • +4

@kingdingaling: You're making the mistake of proposing a sensible argument to someone who has no interest in having a good faith conversation about any of it.

              • -4

@kingdingaling: Oh I completely agree, America is far from perfect. However I think you are misunderstood on some of the issues you brought up.

The abortion one, I assume you are talking about the overturning of the supreme court ruling on Roe vs Wade? All that has done, contrary to what you'd probably believe if you skimmed through the MSM, is turn the issue back to the states. So if you are pro abortion through to 9 months (which seems to be the MSM position these days) then you can move to a state that aligns with your views, like California or NY but if you don't believe in abortion unless the mother's health is in danger (another MSM lie, there is not a single state in America that is banning abortion if the mother's life is in danger from the pregnancy) then you can move to somewhere like Texas.

That's probably the most topical issue you brought up, but yeah their high incarceration rate is an issue and something they need to work on getting to the bottom of.

The 21 year drinking age, I really don't see that as a problem, I'm sure if you asked any doctor they would prefer to have that rule here too, it's just we are so ingrained in the 18 years rule that no government (particularly a left leaning one as they rely on the young minds for votes) would dare to change it now.

As far as universal healthcare goes, yes even as a right winger myself I do believe that's something America should work towards. Though their health system is no where near as bad as it's made out to be, there are safety nets for low income earners and things like that, but no, it's definitely not as "universal" as ours is that's for sure. The only problem with this is that we, and the rest of the world, a actually benefit quite a bit from how expensive the American health care system is, as that money encourage drug companies to spend more on R&D creating new treatments.

If they were limited to charging say $40 a treatment like they might be to make it onto our PBS then the financial incentive isn't as high. I know this sounds "wrong", as a society we should have moved past medicine being a profit driven industry, but it's how the world works at the moment and unless people are willing to pay a heap more tax to fully turn the whole drug/medical industry public it's going to stay that way.

Oh and we can safely ignore "soverign01", he's adding no value and just taking little pot shots at people while providing no substance to back up his claims.

                • +1

@Binchicken22: I'm okay with most of what you wrote, but you talk about moving to different states with different laws like it's nothing. Like it's a menu and you just pick which state you want. You have to uproot your entire family, make a whole new set of friends, find a new job, etc… there's a thousand reasons why I wouldn't want to move states. I think you're being quite simplistic overall. Not having a go, just giving my genuine opinion.

              • +1

@kingdingaling: I think to be consistent the American right would need to be against abortion and the death penalty. Either you don't have the right to terminate a life or you do. The right have their issues. Most regulation is from the left. They have gained a lot of power in recent decades. To make things even more confusing, not all Republicans are right wing. Some love regulation.

Donald Trump totally broke the left though. No lie was off limits to get him out. I've never seen such a barrage of propaganda in my life as when he was in office.

                • @locknuts: I don't necessarily think most regulation is from the left and by the way, I'm not even personally not "against" all regulation. I trust the government (right or left in Australia) to get the fundamentals right. Right wing pick and choose when they're against regulation. I'm sure they want more regulation for Muslims, abortion clinics, to see how social security is distributed… it's not a "most" thing for me, it's the selectiveness, it's based on the issues they agree with and the one's they don't.

I think anyone who says they against "big government" has generally been brainwashed, just my opinion. That's the kind of stuff I don't want us importing from the Yanks. It's an argument which is designed to essentially be a cover for "I want to pick and choose the issues I care about and I wanted to give this as the reason".

I agree that Donald Trump broke the left. I think it didn't help that news outlets over - reported on him for ratings and that's all people who watched those silly networks saw for 4 - 5 years.

                  • @kingdingaling: I mostly agree except on abortion. The right consider abortion murder and I don't know anyone who wants to decriminalise murder. So they consider it criminal, not a regulatory issue.

                    • +1

@locknuts: Yeah, but the right's answer to everything is to criminalise it. They criminalise parking tickets there. USA has the highest incarceration rate in the entire world which is pretty messed up considering how high the homicide rate is there (you'd think if you jailed the most people, those people would be locked up by now) and that it's considered a "developed" country (look at the countries it's just above - Rwanda, Turkmenistan, El Salvador, Cuba, Palau etc). And ironically, they call themselves the land of the free…. funny eh?

                      • @kingdingaling: I haven't heard anyone on the media I watch talk about criminalising parking tickets. Pretty sure it's the same as here in that respect. Anyone can get locked up for not paying fines though.

                        • @locknuts: did you miss the link where i showed you the incarceration rate? they have the highest in the world, 4 times more than Australia. Educate yourself… there's reason you haven't heard it in the media, have you heard of the prison industrial complex?

                          • @kingdingaling: I read it. Incarceration went way up around 20 years ago and has been steadily dropping since. Still highest in the world. No actual data on crimes committed. Nothing about parking tickets. Not sure of the relevance?

                            • @locknuts: My point is they've clearly criminalised everything, hence these ridiculous numbers. That's there response to everything, to criminalise it, including abortion.

Also how can a country that's key principle is "small government" have the most jailed people? That seems like government is getting quite significantly involved in your business. Seems like a police state IMO.

                              • @kingdingaling: Agreed. They should significantly reduce the size and scope of their government.

                                • @locknuts: Any thoughts as to why they don't and yet that's all they talk about and the excuse they use for everything else? Seems very selective to me… feels like a bullshit reason.

                                  • @kingdingaling: The temptation to grow government is always too great. Very few politicians are willing to limit their own budgets in order to ensure the limited government the forefathers envisioned when they wrote the constitution. People have got a taste of welfare too and vote for the politicians who promise them the most. That's my humble opinion.

          • -1

@Binchicken22: I'm really enjoying the irony of everything in this post being wrong. Either you're way off the deep end or you're wasting your life trolling for a laugh - Both are equally sad.

      • +1

I'm honestly befuddled whether this post is meant to be satire. I've gone back and forth on it several times.

      • yeah one side of the aisle is all for censorship for anything that challenges their world view, the other is for as much information as possible and letting people make their own decisions on what they choose to watch.

It's funny how intolerant the side that preaches tolerance is, eh.

    • I think you can sideload apps on the firestick…

      • Yep definitely can. I have done it with multiple apps. Some you will need to do a quick mod to the apk to make the icon show (but still works without it).

  • +9

Will we ever get Fire tablets :(

  • +1

Noob question here, if I have a smart tv with the video streaming apps, is this worth it? Or is this mainly for monitors and non-smart TVs?

    • -7

for the same money, get a Google Chrome, it gives you access to all, netflix, amazon prime, dysney+, youtube etc

and the interface is waaaay nicer than the fire stick, including voice search etc.

      • +20

I don't think you can get the Google TV with Chrome for the same money. I agree that it's a better device, but not for the reasons you mentioned. Fire Stick gives you access to all those services as well.

        • Correct. The best deal I saw was $79 plus a $20 gift card at HN. It seems that not everyone wants to do business with Gerry.

          • @philart: It's worth for its stability, though. I had too many issues disconnecting from WiFi and when I mentioned that on another deal I saw that I was not alone. I returned it to Amazon and got the GTV from JB Hi-Fi. No issues with it so far.

            • +1

@bio: That is very interesting considering that the 4K Max has the newer Wifi 6 support.

Did you use the TV's USB power or the power brick that came with the device?

There's a discussion post over at AFTVnews that suggests we should always use the power brick so the device has enough power to perform optimally and can run background updates while it's in sleep mode.

              • @thangcuoi: I used the power brick.

It also "fixed itself" when I launched the app using the remote (see my previous comment and the replies), so it didn't look like it was power related. Maybe I had a defective unit or it might be my router but I'm not having any issues with any other device, and Google TV with ChromeCast works perfectly too.

    • +4

I had the same question before pulling the trigger. But I got them for a pair of new Hisense Smart TV's with Viidaa or whatever the OS is called, which doesn't have/can't get Paramount+ and a few others. With this, it's absolutely possible, as well as if you 'stream content' from the net, and the ability to add so many App's that you just can't get here in Aus or on particular TV operating systems. At this price, absolutely worth it.

But as other commenter has said, a Chromecast 4K is worth looking at (I got both, there was a deal here recently for it from HN), as the Firestick doesn't offer the casting functionality. I'd say get this deal, then keep an eye on competitor Prime Day sales for Chromecast deals perhaps..

      • You can cast to the Fire TV stick. I have the 4k Max and have used the cast feature perfectly fine.

        • +4

screen mirroring yes. but just casting no.

      • +1

if you install youtube app on the firetv max 4k
can you cast from the youtube app on the "android or apple" phone/tablet to the youtube app on the firetv (after linking it with our phone/tablet devices)?

would this be a good workaround to not having native casting built into the firetv?

also is there native youtube app on the amazon store or need to sideload it (if possible or not)?

    • +3

Fire stick, install apps like stremio/syncler.

Can watch content from Netflix, Disney, HBO

Look up on Reddit/ FB groups of firesticks

      • Ah that looks like what Plex is trying to do now - be a hub for your streaming services.

        • +2

I watch my Plex through the Firestick 4k Max with no issues as well as have the odd bit of fun with cloud gaming thanks to this deal. I do not have the nicer Chromecast (only the original one) and I admit that I initially did miss the ability to CAST to the Chromecast but to be honest I have forgotten all about it now.

          • @danielh: does xbox cloud gaming work well? no lag? controllers work well?

            • @chillipaste: I have no issues with my GameSir G4 joypad. I play the racing games and occasionally there is some jagging on the graphics but otherwise playable. Please note that I have not played this for games like counterstrike etc (basically games that require super fast reaction times).

          • @danielh: You can cast to the Fire TV stick. Works fine with my android phone.

      • What do you mean install those apps, can't you watch netflix Disney etc on the firestick as it is?

        • +4

For those who prefer to hangout with Jack Sparrow.

        • You can but there are other apps (like Plex) that let you aggregate all those streaming apps into one single one. I have not personally used it though.

        • Paramount for example, where I watch the football (soccer - A-League etc). Can't get it on Hisense OS.

          • @handles1: I just use the Optus app on Firestick and watch my EPL games that way.

          • @handles1: You can stream paramount through prime if you have that.

            • @nagel: I found that process difficult when I tried before - it didn’t seem to recognize my paramount plus subscription. Will try again.

            • +1

@nagel: Didn't work for me. Asks for a separate account.

    • +7

Are you happy with your smart tv?

      These devices are for when
      - you want more apps on your tv - some TVs have a limited library. BUT most TVs are fine for mainstream apps like Netflix, 7/9/10, YouTube, Disney+. Eg some people use these for retro gaming, or foreign tv apps, or link it up to your own media

      • your smart tv gets dumb/outdated - then you can't update your apps. Eg Disney+ came out 2019, Paramount in 2021, if you got a tv before that, some of them didn't update for newer apps. Would you buy a new tv or a device like this? (Also, some of them are reaaallly slow to update for new apps)

      • your smart tv is slow - these devices are dedicated to streaming, so the UI and speed is probably better than your tv (but this is only noticeable when you're in the app menus or loading something, if you're streaming a video it should be fine). But if your TV's wifi connection is a bit crap (and other devices are fine), definitely give this is a try.

      • +1

also for when your smart tv that you paid $5k for thinks it should be able to show you ads non stop in its version of youtube (and also just on the tv interface etc). so you get a firestick and sideload an adblocker and do away with that pain. no idea why the LG youtube app plays more ads than pc or my old shield but it is terribly painful to watch anything on youtube with it.

  • +6

Solid deal. Purchased a couple of these separately at $69 and $59 (with the $20 gift card bundle), which are still within the return window. Just jumped on chat and got refunded the difference between those and this deal, if anyone is in the same boat. Great customer service as always..

    • What did you say when asking for the refund?

      • +2

Just that I had made 2 orders at those higher prices that were still within the return window, and that I could see the upcoming promo to get them together at $34.65 each on Prime Day, and did they prefer I sent these back and repurchased, or just credit/refund me the difference now.. no objection from them. I suppose the bonus was that the $20 gift card from one of the promo's was not considered, so I effectively scored that for nothing.

        • +3

"I understand that you are seeing an upcoming deal with this particular item. I'd really love to refund you the difference but I don't have option to do that. Our prices are not constant and it's changing from time to time even there's upcoming deal or not. As a result, we can't issue or honour price difference."

          Damn

          • +9

@dm02: Call their bluff. Return the original.

            • @PainToad: will do hahaha

              • @dm02: Should have asked them to initiate the return in the same livechat.

                • @ATangk: they offered to do it hahaha

                  • +3

@dm02: I mean… you can always hold onto the label, then return the new one when it comes. They wont know the difference and you wont have to take apart your current device.

                    • @ATangk: Just a heads up, they have a record of the serial numbers of the Amazon devices you bought, which shows in your order history.

                  • @dm02: So you returned the original? Or buying a new one then returning it as the original? See my comment above regarding the serial numbers.

          • +2

            @dm02:

            Damn

            Name almost checks out.

    • Surprised they refunded the difference… you may have got lucky with that (or they've become more lenient recently), usually the best they give is credit if you're lucky, otherwise can only return and buy again.

      • +3

Amazon CS are hit or miss.

You can ask one rep something, they'll tell you an answer. You can close the window, start a new chat immediately, ask the same question and get a completely different answer.

For example; some reps don't even make you return your product for a full refund if you have some kind of minor issue, but some do.

If you don't get the answer you want, just try again.

My advice is just be extremely polite to whoever you speak to, and I've had more luck getting what I want outside of Australian business hours (like midnight).

    • My gift card bundle window closed on the 1st :( damn that next day delivery!

    • +3

I'm surprised they refunded you the difference - over the years I have had several instances where the price has gone down shortly after making my purchase on Amazon, and every single time my request for the price difference has been declined.

Half the time I've decided that the difference is too small to bother; on other occasions I have actually gone through the return-repurchase process where the saving is worth it.

Not doubting you though - as another commenter above said, you probably just have to be lucky to get the right CS rep…

      • It appears so, but definitely happened. To be fair I have the boxes so would have gotten the refund anyway as I was inside the return window to use the ol' 'arrived too late' option for a full refund without question, all automated. But I just proposed to the rep that we save the dance and just credit the difference to my account, which he happily obliged. The rep even asked me what the price difference was between what I paid and the upcoming promotional price, and I thought I'd try it on (not making any allowance for the $20 gift card), and sure enough it was promptly refunded. Sometimes you get a win I guess :)

  • +1

FFS I paid $54 for one of these from JB & $39 for one off Amazon just couple months back.

    • +12

At least you have now enjoyed them for a few months!

  • +4

The good thing I like about Fire TV stick is it has inbuilt decoders while Google TV doesn't. Many of us are still holding on to our old home theatre systems and this still lets us enjoy 5.1 sound from all the new streaming apps.

    • Can you explain this? I've been looking at 5.1 systems, and thought I could just use ARC our something to get 5.1 easily from the TV…

      • +2

You'll be fine with the new home theatre systems as all of them have dolby digital plus and atmos decoders built into them. For people who are still holding on to their old dolby digital receivers which cannot handle DD+, you need to have the decoder inbuilt into the streaming device or else the DD receiver will play it as DD 2.0 instead of 5.1.

        • Could you please explain on how to use this with older Dolby digital receiver? Or link, please.

Where to connect this 4k firestick and how to output the sound 5.1? Or do I need to use a computer?

          Thanks

  • +3

very nice device, installed RetroArch and play old retro games with 8bitdo pro is really fun

  • -8

Still not the cheapest. Managed to score the fire stick 4k max for $24 each with some hoops.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12108598/redir

Will JB honour pricing from Amazon?

    • +3

I don't think adding in a refferal bonus really classifies as being a lower price. If you can't buy it multiple times at that price, it's not the lowest price.

      • -4

Not having a dig at the deal. Just stating it can be acquired for cheaper if you are willing to go through some hoops.

And my comment about JB hi-fi price matching is certainly possible.

Also the amount of people that would want one and not two devices would likely be greater.

        Neg away

  • +2

TIP: You can pause the force firmware update if you plug the USB into your TV for power instead of using the included power brick.

This will allow you to use Launcher Manager + third party launcher such as FLauncher as your default home screen and hide the Amazon content if you do not have Amazon Prime year round.

Between the official Fire TV appstore and sideloading apps, you should have most streaming services covered so you don't need to cast anything.

When I absolutely have to cast something, I find Allcast does the job.

The only thing I'm missing from official Android TV devices is the Button Mapper app support which allows me to program the buttons on the remote to launch multiple apps.

    • If I want Kodi, do I have to sideload?

Yes, Kodi was not available in the Fire TV appstore when I set my unit up in June. I read somewhere that it's recommended that you use the 32-bit version as it has better compatibility with add-ons.

Yes, but it's as simple as downloading the "Downloader" app from the official app store, then enabling third-party APK installation in the settings. Then just use the Downloader app to go to kodi.tv and install the Android version. Works a charm.

Another way if you have an Android phone is to send the Kodi apk to the Fire TV using Send Files to TV. The app is available on Google Play and the Fire TV appstore.

I would also recommend using Total Commander as your file manager.

        • Thanks, I'll stick with my MiBox S. It's still working reasonably well.

  • Our android tv box has no Prime Video app… so quite tempted at this price.

    Thanks OP

    • Can side load prime? Should still end up in the main menu.

Yes, I would recommend Aptoide TV for simple update.

        • I do have Hisense tv so there's no Google Play Store and it doesn't have several apps in Hisense's Vidaa app store (e.g. Freeview). Will Aptoide TV be a solution for this? How can I download it on tv?

          • +1

@virhlpool: Unless your tv has a built in web browser, you will need to sideload the Aptoide TV apk.

I use an app called Send Files to TV. See if it's available on your TV appstore.

For this price, I would recommend upgrading to the 4K Max. It's super responsive. You will have a much better user experience.

            • @thangcuoi: I thought Vidaa wasn't Android, and therefore won't have Aptoide or anything else?
