Shame managed mGig switches are still not priced well….It was easier for me to go 10G. Seems like as good deal though.

If it's to connect a desktop to a PC NAS in the same room, maybe something like a 40Gbps (32Gbps throughput) $28 Mellanox Infiniband card would be better. Short cables aren't too expensive. Be prepared to do a lot of research first though!

      • Unless your NAS is ultra advanced and full of SSDs, then it already won't be able to saturate a 10Gb link. 32Gb is way overkill 😁

          32Gb is way overkill

But cheaper. 10G cards are still pretty pricey!

  • How does this compare to the other generic RTL8125 2.5G cards like this?

came for free in my $2k Aorus. welp

There's an IOCrest one going for a similar price on AliExpress with an Intel NIC. Would recommend that one if using it for pfSense/OPNsense.

Would you be able to provide a link please mate?

I think you’ll want ones with the Intel I225-V B3 chips, but I haven’t bothered yet as, as mentioned above, 2.5GB switches are basically non-existent

        • Well yeah, 2.5Gb on the other hand…

Any recommendations for a budget 2.5gbps or 10gbps Network switch to pair with this?

Can also use USB if you are so inclined: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/174189624922?hash=item288e82be5a…

I've got one of these and seems to be quite reliable. Edimax seems to be a quite decent brand from the assortment of products I've used over the years.

I'm currently using this as a peer to peer link (alongside the existing LAN) to my NAS PC. Had to set static IPs, then map the network drive in Windows to the second IP to ensure the network share was using the 2.5Gbe link instead of the gigabit LAN, but once that was done I've been easily able to saturate the link at 250mb/s.

If you need multiple PCs/routing/faster speeds, then I'd probably go to some used dual port 10Gbe server NICs (e.g. NC552SFP for $50ish) and either DAC cables or fiber runs with transceivers. unfortunately the 2.5G switches are no cheaper than 10G so you might as well futureproof your network!

  • Thanks for researching and posting the price comparison, +1 for that alone!
